The signature of a path can be described as its full non-commutative exponential. Following T. Lyons, we regard its expectation, the expected signature, as a path space analogue of the classical moment generating function. The logarithm thereof, taken in the tensor algebra, defines the signature cumulant. We establish a universal functional relation in a general semimartingale context. Our work exhibits the importance of Magnus expansions in the algorithmic problem of computing expected signature cumulants and further offers a far-reaching generalization of recent results on characteristic exponents dubbed diamond and cumulant expansions with motivations ranging from financial mathematics to statistical physics. From an affine semimartingale perspective, the functional relation may be interpreted as a type of generalized Riccati equation.

A generalization of Serre’s Conjecture asserts that if $F$ is a totally real field, then certain characteristic $p$ representations of Galois groups over $F$ arise from Hilbert modular forms. Moreover, it predicts the set of weights of such forms in terms of the local behaviour of the Galois representation at primes over  $p$ . This characterization of the weights, which is formulated using $p$ -adic Hodge theory, is known under mild technical hypotheses if $p>2$ . In this paper we give, under the assumption that $p$ is unramified in $F$ , a conjectural alternative description for the set of weights. Our approach is to use the Artin–Hasse exponential and local class field theory to construct bases for local Galois cohomology spaces in terms of which we identify subspaces that should correspond to ones defined using $p$ -adic Hodge theory. The resulting conjecture amounts to an explicit description of wild ramification in reductions of certain crystalline Galois representations. It enables the direct computation of the set of Serre weights of a Galois representation, which we illustrate with numerical examples. A proof of this conjecture has been announced by Calegari, Emerton, Gee and Mavrides.

We provide a microlocal necessary condition for distinction of admissible representations of real reductive groups in the context of spherical pairs.

Let ${\mathbf {G}}$ be a complex algebraic reductive group and ${\mathbf {H}}\subset {\mathbf {G}}$ be a spherical algebraic subgroup. Let ${\mathfrak {g}},{\mathfrak {h}}$ denote the Lie algebras of ${\mathbf {G}}$ and ${\mathbf {H}}$ , and let ${\mathfrak {h}}^{\bot }$ denote the orthogonal complement to ${\mathfrak {h}}$ in ${\mathfrak {g}}^*$ . A ${\mathfrak {g}}$ -module is called ${\mathfrak {h}}$ -distinguished if it admits a nonzero ${\mathfrak {h}}$ -invariant functional. We show that the maximal ${\mathbf {G}}$ -orbit in the annihilator variety of any irreducible ${\mathfrak {h}}$ -distinguished ${\mathfrak {g}}$ -module intersects ${\mathfrak {h}}^{\bot }$ . This generalises a result of Vogan [Vog91].

We apply this to Casselman–Wallach representations of real reductive groups to obtain information on branching problems, translation functors and Jacquet modules. Further, we prove in many cases that – as suggested by [Pra19, Question 1] – when H is a symmetric subgroup of a real reductive group G, the existence of a tempered H-distinguished representation of G implies the existence of a generic H-distinguished representation of G.

Many of the models studied in the theory of automorphic forms involve an additive character on the unipotent radical of the subgroup $\bf H$ , and we have devised a twisted version of our theorem that yields necessary conditions for the existence of those mixed models. Our method of proof here is inspired by the theory of modules over W-algebras. As an application of our theorem we derive necessary conditions for the existence of Rankin–Selberg, Bessel, Klyachko and Shalika models. Our results are compatible with the recent Gan–Gross–Prasad conjectures for nongeneric representations [GGP20].

Finally, we provide more general results that ease the sphericity assumption on the subgroups, and apply them to local theta correspondence in type II and to degenerate Whittaker models.

We study lc pairs polarized by a nef and log big divisor. After proving the minimal model theory for projective lc pairs polarized by a nef and log big divisor, we prove the effectivity of the Iitaka fibrations and some boundedness results for dlt pairs polarized by a nef and log big divisor.

We generalize Bloch’s map on torsion cycles from algebraically closed fields to arbitrary fields. While Bloch’s map over algebraically closed fields is injective for zero-cycles and for cycles of codimension at most two, we show that the generalization to arbitrary fields is only injective for cycles of codimension at most two but, in general, not for zero-cycles. Our result implies that Jannsen’s cycle class map in integral $\ell $ -adic continuous étale cohomology is, in general, not injective on torsion zero-cycles over finitely generated fields. This answers a question of Scavia and Suzuki.

Quasi-BPS categories appear as summands in semiorthogonal decompositions of DT categories for Hilbert schemes of points in the three-dimensional affine space and in the categorical Hall algebra of the two-dimensional affine space. In this paper, we prove several properties of quasi-BPS categories analogous to BPS sheaves in cohomological DT theory.

We first prove a categorical analogue of Davison’s support lemma, namely that complexes in the quasi-BPS categories for coprime length and weight are supported over the small diagonal in the symmetric product of the three-dimensional affine space. The categorical support lemma is used to determine the torsion-free generator of the torus equivariant K-theory of the quasi-BPS category of coprime length and weight.

We next construct a bialgebra structure on the torsion free equivariant K-theory of quasi-BPS categories for a fixed ratio of length and weight. We define the K-theoretic BPS space as the space of primitive elements with respect to the coproduct. We show that all localized equivariant K-theoretic BPS spaces are one-dimensional, which is a K-theoretic analogue of the computation of (numerical) BPS invariants of the three-dimensional affine space.

A result of Bleher, Chinburg, Greenberg, Kakde, Pappas, Sharifi and Taylor has initiated the topic of higher codimension Iwasawa theory. As a generalization of the classical Iwasawa main conjecture, they prove a relationship between analytic objects (a pair of Katz’s $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions) and algebraic objects (two ‘everywhere unramified’ Iwasawa modules) involving codimension two cycles in a $2$-variable Iwasawa algebra. We prove a result by considering the restriction to an imaginary quadratic field $K$ (where an odd prime $p$ splits) of an elliptic curve $E$, defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, with good supersingular reduction at $p$. On the analytic side, we consider eight pairs of $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions in this setup (four of the $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions have been constructed by Loeffler and a fifth $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-function is due to Hida). On the algebraic side, we consider modifications of fine Selmer groups over the $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^{2}$-extension of $K$. We also provide numerical evidence, using algorithms of Pollack, towards a pseudonullity conjecture of Coates–Sujatha.

We present and thoroughly study natural Polish spaces of separable Banach spaces. These spaces are defined as spaces of norms, respectively pseudonorms, on the countable infinite-dimensional rational vector space. We provide an exhaustive comparison of these spaces with admissible topologies recently introduced by Godefroy and Saint-Raymond and show that Borel complexities differ little with respect to these two topological approaches.

We investigate generic properties in these spaces and compare them with those in admissible topologies, confirming the suspicion of Godefroy and Saint-Raymond that they depend on the choice of the admissible topology.

Sarnak’s density conjecture is an explicit bound on the multiplicities of nontempered representations in a sequence of cocompact congruence arithmetic lattices in a semisimple Lie group, which is motivated by the work of Sarnak and Xue ([58]). The goal of this work is to discuss similar hypotheses, their interrelation and their applications. We mainly focus on two properties – the spectral spherical density hypothesis and the geometric Weak injective radius property. Our results are strongest in the p-adic case, where we show that the two properties are equivalent, and both imply Sarnak’s general density hypothesis. One possible application is that either the spherical density hypothesis or the Weak injective radius property imply Sarnak’s optimal lifting property ([57]). Conjecturally, all those properties should hold in great generality. We hope that this work will motivate their proofs in new cases.

We study forcing pairs for quasirandom graphs. Chung, Graham, and Wilson initiated the study of families ${\mathcal{F}}$ of graphs with the property that if a large graph $G$ has approximately homomorphism density $p^{e(F)}$ for some fixed $p\in (0,1]$ for every $F\in {\mathcal{F}}$, then $G$ is quasirandom with density $p$. Such families ${\mathcal{F}}$ are said to be forcing. Several forcing families were found over the last three decades and characterizing all bipartite graphs $F$ such that $(K_{2},F)$ is a forcing pair is a well-known open problem in the area of quasirandom graphs, which is closely related to Sidorenko’s conjecture. In fact, most of the known forcing families involve bipartite graphs only.

We consider forcing pairs containing the triangle $K_{3}$. In particular, we show that if $(K_{2},F)$ is a forcing pair, then so is $(K_{3},F^{\rhd })$, where $F^{\rhd }$ is obtained from $F$ by replacing every edge of $F$ by a triangle (each of which introduces a new vertex). For the proof we first show that $(K_{3},C_{4}^{\rhd })$ is a forcing pair, which strengthens related results of Simonovits and Sós and of Conlon et al.

This paper solves the rational noncommutative analogue of Hilbert’s 17th problem: if a noncommutative rational function is positive semidefinite on all tuples of Hermitian matrices in its domain, then it is a sum of Hermitian squares of noncommutative rational functions. This result is a generalisation and culmination of earlier positivity certificates for noncommutative polynomials or rational functions without Hermitian singularities. More generally, a rational Positivstellensatz for free spectrahedra is given: a noncommutative rational function is positive semidefinite or undefined at every matricial solution of a linear matrix inequality $L\succeq 0$ if and only if it belongs to the rational quadratic module generated by L. The essential intermediate step toward this Positivstellensatz for functions with singularities is an extension theorem for invertible evaluations of linear matrix pencils.

We introduce an analogue of Bridgeland’s stability conditions for polarised varieties. Much as Bridgeland stability is modelled on slope stability of coherent sheaves, our notion of Z-stability is modelled on the notion of K-stability of polarised varieties. We then introduce an analytic counterpart to stability, through the notion of a Z-critical Kähler metric, modelled on the constant scalar curvature Kähler condition. Our main result shows that a polarised variety which is analytically K-semistable and asymptotically Z-stable admits Z-critical Kähler metrics in the large volume regime. We also prove a local converse and explain how these results can be viewed in terms of local wall crossing. A special case of our framework gives a manifold analogue of the deformed Hermitian Yang–Mills equation.

Let G be a reductive algebraic group—possibly non-connected—over a field k, and let H be a subgroup of G. If $G= {GL }_n$ , then there is a degeneration process for obtaining from H a completely reducible subgroup $H'$ of G; one takes a limit of H along a cocharacter of G in an appropriate sense. We generalise this idea to arbitrary reductive G using the notion of G-complete reducibility and results from geometric invariant theory over non-algebraically closed fields due to the authors and Herpel. Our construction produces a G-completely reducible subgroup $H'$ of G, unique up to $G(k)$ -conjugacy, which we call a k-semisimplification of H. This gives a single unifying construction that extends various special cases in the literature (in particular, it agrees with the usual notion for $G= GL _n$ and with Serre’s ‘G-analogue’ of semisimplification for subgroups of $G(k)$ from [19]). We also show that under some extra hypotheses, one can pick $H'$ in a more canonical way using the Tits Centre Conjecture for spherical buildings and/or the theory of optimal destabilising cocharacters introduced by Hesselink, Kempf, and Rousseau.

We construct two types of unital separable simple $C^*$ -algebras: $A_z^{C_1}$ and $A_z^{C_2}$ , one exact but not amenable, the other nonexact. Both have the same Elliott invariant as the Jiang–Su algebra – namely, $A_z^{C_i}$ has a unique tracial state,

and $K_{1}\left (A_z^{C_i}\right )=\{0\}$ ( $i=1,2$ ). We show that $A_z^{C_i}$ ( $i=1,2$ ) is essentially tracially in the class of separable ${\mathscr Z}$ -stable $C^*$ -algebras of nuclear dimension $1$ . $A_z^{C_i}$ has stable rank one, strict comparison for positive elements and no $2$ -quasitrace other than the unique tracial state. We also produce models of unital separable simple nonexact (exact but not nuclear) $C^*$ -algebras which are essentially tracially in the class of simple separable nuclear ${\mathscr Z}$ -stable $C^*$ -algebras, and the models exhaust all possible weakly unperforated Elliott invariants. We also discuss some basic properties of essential tracial approximation.

Let K be a number field, let A be a finite-dimensional K-algebra, let $\operatorname {\mathrm {J}}(A)$ denote the Jacobson radical of A and let $\Lambda $ be an $\mathcal {O}_{K}$ -order in A. Suppose that each simple component of the semisimple K-algebra $A/{\operatorname {\mathrm {J}}(A)}$ is isomorphic to a matrix ring over a field. Under this hypothesis on A, we give an algorithm that, given two $\Lambda $ -lattices X and Y, determines whether X and Y are isomorphic and, if so, computes an explicit isomorphism $X \rightarrow Y$ . This algorithm reduces the problem to standard problems in computational algebra and algorithmic algebraic number theory in polynomial time. As an application, we give an algorithm for the following long-standing problem: Given a number field K, a positive integer n and two matrices $A,B \in \mathrm {Mat}_{n}(\mathcal {O}_{K})$ , determine whether A and B are similar over $\mathcal {O}_{K}$ , and if so, return a matrix $C \in \mathrm {GL}_{n}(\mathcal {O}_{K})$ such that $B= CAC^{-1}$ . We give explicit examples that show that the implementation of the latter algorithm for $\mathcal {O}_{K}=\mathbb {Z}$ vastly outperforms implementations of all previous algorithms, as predicted by our complexity analysis.

The superspace ring $\Omega _n$ is a rank n polynomial ring tensored with a rank n exterior algebra. Using an extension of the Vandermonde determinant to $\Omega _n$, the authors previously defined a family of doubly graded quotients ${\mathbb {W}}_{n,k}$ of $\Omega _n$, which carry an action of the symmetric group ${\mathfrak {S}}_n$ and satisfy a bigraded version of Poincaré Duality. In this paper, we examine the duality modules ${\mathbb {W}}_{n,k}$ in greater detail. We describe a monomial basis of ${\mathbb {W}}_{n,k}$ and give combinatorial formulas for its bigraded Hilbert and Frobenius series. These formulas involve new combinatorial objects called ordered set superpartitions. These are ordered set partitions $(B_1 \mid \cdots \mid B_k)$ of $\{1,\dots ,n\}$ in which the nonminimal elements of any block $B_i$ may be barred or unbarred.

We investigate norms of spectral projectors on thin spherical shells for the Laplacian on tori. This is closely related to the boundedness of resolvents of the Laplacian and the boundedness of $L^{p}$ norms of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. We formulate a conjecture and partially prove it.

We answer an open problem posed by Iarrobino, Hilbert scheme of points: Overview of last ten years. Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Mathematics, 46 (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 1987), 297–320: Is there a component of the punctual Hilbert scheme [Grothendieck, Techniques de construction et théorèmes d'existence en géométrie algébrique. IV. Les schémas de Hilbert', in Séminaire Bourbaki, 6 (Societe Mathematique de France, Paris, 1995), 221, 249–276] $\operatorname {\mathrm {Hilb}}^d({\mathscr {O}}_{\mathbb {A}^n,p})$ with dimension less than $(n-1)(d-1)$ ? For each $n\geq 4$ , we construct an infinite class of elementary components in $\operatorname {\mathrm {Hilb}}^d(\mathbb {A}^n)$ producing such examples. Our techniques also allow us to construct an explicit example of a local Artinian ring [Iarrobino and Kanev, Power sums, Gorenstein algebras, and determinantal loci (Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1999), 221–226] of the form with trivial negative tangents, vanishing nonnegative obstruction space, and socle-dimension $2$ .

We consider sets ${\it\Gamma}(n,s,k)$ of narrow clauses expressing that no definition of a size $s$ circuit with $n$ inputs is refutable in resolution R in $k$ steps. We show that every CNF with a short refutation in extended R, ER, can be easily reduced to an instance of ${\it\Gamma}(0,s,k)$ (with $s,k$ depending on the size of the ER-refutation) and, in particular, that ${\it\Gamma}(0,s,k)$ when interpreted as a relativized NP search problem is complete among all such problems provably total in bounded arithmetic theory $V_{1}^{1}$ . We use the ideas of implicit proofs from Krajíček [J. Symbolic Logic, 69 (2) (2004), 387–397; J. Symbolic Logic, 70 (2) (2005), 619–630] to define from ${\it\Gamma}(0,s,k)$ a nonrelativized NP search problem $i{\it\Gamma}$ and we show that it is complete among all such problems provably total in bounded arithmetic theory $V_{2}^{1}$ . The reductions are definable in theory $S_{2}^{1}$ . We indicate how similar results can be proved for some other propositional proof systems and bounded arithmetic theories and how the construction can be used to define specific random unsatisfiable formulas, and we formulate two open problems about them.

We use concepts of continuous higher randomness, developed in Bienvenu et al. [‘Continuous higher randomness’, J. Math. Log. 17(1) (2017).], to investigate $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}_{1}^{1}$-randomness. We discuss lowness for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}_{1}^{1}$-randomness, cupping with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}_{1}^{1}$-random sequences, and an analogue of the Hirschfeldt–Miller characterization of weak 2-randomness. We also consider analogous questions for Cohen forcing, concentrating on the class of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}_{1}^{1}$-generic reals.
