In Angulo-Ardoy et al. [Anal. PDE, 9(3) (2016), 575–596], we found some necessary conditions for a Riemannian manifold to admit a local limiting Carleman weight (LCW), based on the Cotton–York tensor in dimension 3 and the Weyl tensor in dimension 4. In this paper, we find further necessary conditions for the existence of local LCWs that are often sufficient. For a manifold of dimension 3 or 4, we classify the possible Cotton–York, or Weyl tensors, and provide a mechanism to find out whether the manifold admits local LCW for each type of tensor. In particular, we show that a product of two surfaces admits an LCW if and only if at least one of the two surfaces is of revolution. This provides an example of a manifold satisfying the eigenflag condition of Angulo-Ardoy et al. [Anal. PDE, 9(3) (2016), 575–596] but not admitting LCW.

We introduce inner amenability for discrete probability-measure-preserving (p.m.p.) groupoids and investigate its basic properties, examples, and the connection with central sequences in the full group of the groupoid or central sequences in the von Neumann algebra associated with the groupoid. Among other things, we show that every free ergodic p.m.p. compact action of an inner amenable group gives rise to an inner amenable orbit equivalence relation. We also obtain an analogous result for compact extensions of equivalence relations that either are stable or have a nontrivial central sequence in their full group.

We prove that the hitting measure is singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure for random walks driven by finitely supported measures on cocompact, hyperelliptic Fuchsian groups. Moreover, the Hausdorff dimension of the hitting measure is strictly less than one. Equivalently, the inequality between entropy and drift is strict. A similar statement is proven for Coxeter groups.

Starting from loop equations, we prove that the wave functions constructed from topological recursion on families of degree $2$ spectral curves with a global involution satisfy a system of partial differential equations, whose equations can be seen as quantizations of the original spectral curves. The families of spectral curves can be parametrized with the so-called times, defined as periods on second type cycles, and with the poles. These equations can be used to prove that the WKB solution of many isomonodromic systems coincides with the topological recursion wave function, which proves that the topological recursion wave function is annihilated by a quantum curve. This recovers many known quantum curves for genus zero spectral curves and generalizes this construction to hyperelliptic curves.

Almost perfect obstruction theories were introduced in an earlier paper by the authors as the appropriate notion in order to define virtual structure sheaves and K-theoretic invariants for many moduli stacks of interest, including K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of sheaves and complexes on Calabi-Yau threefolds. The construction of virtual structure sheaves is based on the K-theory and Gysin maps of sheaf stacks.

In this paper, we generalize the virtual torus localization and cosection localization formulas and their combination to the setting of almost perfect obstruction theory. To this end, we further investigate the K-theory of sheaf stacks and its functoriality properties. As applications of the localization formulas, we establish a K-theoretic wall-crossing formula for simple $\mathbb{C} ^\ast $ -wall crossings and define K-theoretic invariants refining the Jiang-Thomas virtual signed Euler characteristics.

In this paper we prove a short time asymptotic expansion of a hypoelliptic heat kernel on a Euclidean space and a compact manifold. We study the ‘cut locus’ case, namely, the case where energy-minimizing paths which join the two points under consideration form not a finite set, but a compact manifold. Under mild assumptions we obtain an asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel up to any order. Our approach is probabilistic and the heat kernel is regarded as the density of the law of a hypoelliptic diffusion process, which is realized as a unique solution of the corresponding stochastic differential equation. Our main tools are S. Watanabe’s distributional Malliavin calculus and T. Lyons’ rough path theory.

We introduce semidistrim lattices, a simultaneous generalization of semidistributive and trim lattices that preserves many of their common properties. We prove that the elements of a semidistrim lattice correspond to the independent sets in an associated graph called the Galois graph, that products and intervals of semidistrim lattices are semidistrim and that the order complex of a semidistrim lattice is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere.

Semidistrim lattices have a natural rowmotion operator, which simultaneously generalizes Barnard’s $\overline \kappa $ map on semidistributive lattices as well as Thomas and the second author’s rowmotion on trim lattices. Every lattice has an associated pop-stack sorting operator that sends an element x to the meet of the elements covered by x. For semidistrim lattices, we are able to derive several intimate connections between rowmotion and pop-stack sorting, one of which involves independent dominating sets of the Galois graph.

We prove that sums of length about $q^{3/2}$ of Hecke eigenvalues of automorphic forms on $\operatorname{SL}_{3}(\mathbf{Z})$ do not correlate with $q$-periodic functions with bounded Fourier transform. This generalizes the earlier results of Munshi and Holowinsky–Nelson, corresponding to multiplicative Dirichlet characters, and applies, in particular, to trace functions of small conductor modulo primes.

Let $G$ be a totally disconnected, locally compact group. A closed subgroup of $G$ is locally normal if its normalizer is open in $G$. We begin an investigation of the structure of the family of closed locally normal subgroups of $G$. Modulo commensurability, this family forms a modular lattice ${\mathcal{L}}{\mathcal{N}}(G)$, called the structure lattice of $G$. We show that $G$ admits a canonical maximal quotient $H$ for which the quasicentre and the abelian locally normal subgroups are trivial. In this situation ${\mathcal{L}}{\mathcal{N}}(H)$ has a canonical subset called the centralizer lattice, forming a Boolean algebra whose elements correspond to centralizers of locally normal subgroups. If $H$ is second-countable and acts faithfully on its centralizer lattice, we show that the topology of $H$ is determined by its algebraic structure (and thus invariant by every abstract group automorphism), and also that the action on the Stone space of the centralizer lattice is universal for a class of actions on profinite spaces. Most of the material is developed in the more general framework of Hecke pairs.

The superbosonization identity of Littelmann, Sommers and Zirnbauer is a new tool for use in studying universality of random matrix ensembles via supersymmetry, which is applicable to non-Gaussian invariant distributions. We give a new conceptual interpretation of this formula, linking it to harmonic superanalysis of Lie supergroups and symmetric superspaces, and in particular, to a supergeneralization of the Riesz distributions. Using the super-Laplace transformation of generalized superfunctions, the theory of which we develop, we reduce the proof to computing the Gindikin gamma function of a Riemannian symmetric superspace, which we determine explicitly.

Let $\Omega \subset \mathbb {R}^{n+1}$ , $n\ge 2$ , be a $1$ -sided nontangentially accessible domain, that is, a set which is quantitatively open and path-connected. Assume also that $\Omega $ satisfies the capacity density condition. Let $L_0 u=-\mathop {\operatorname {div}}\nolimits (A_0 \nabla u)$ , $Lu=-\mathop {\operatorname {div}}\nolimits (A\nabla u)$ be two real (not necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic operators in $\Omega $ , and write $\omega _{L_0}, \omega _L$ for the respective associated elliptic measures. We establish the equivalence between the following properties: (i) $\omega _L \in A_{\infty }(\omega _{L_0})$ , (ii) L is $L^p(\omega _{L_0})$ -solvable for some $p\in (1,\infty )$ , (iii) bounded null solutions of L satisfy Carleson measure estimates with respect to $\omega _{L_0}$ , (iv) $\mathcal {S}<\mathcal {N}$ (i.e., the conical square function is controlled by the nontangential maximal function) in $L^q(\omega _{L_0})$ for some (or for all) $q\in (0,\infty )$ for any null solution of L, and (v) L is $\mathrm {BMO}(\omega _{L_0})$ -solvable. Moreover, in each of the properties (ii)-(v) it is enough to consider the class of solutions given by characteristic functions of Borel sets (i.e, $u(X)=\omega _L^X(S)$ for an arbitrary Borel set $S\subset \partial \Omega $ ).

Also, we obtain a qualitative analog of the previous equivalences. Namely, we characterize the absolute continuity of $\omega _{L_0}$ with respect to $\omega _L$ in terms of some qualitative local $L^2(\omega _{L_0})$ estimates for the truncated conical square function for any bounded null solution of L. This is also equivalent to the finiteness $\omega _{L_0}$ -almost everywhere of the truncated conical square function for any bounded null solution of L. As applications, we show that $\omega _{L_0}$ is absolutely continuous with respect to $\omega _L$ if the disagreement of the coefficients satisfies some qualitative quadratic estimate in truncated cones for $\omega _{L_0}$ -almost everywhere vertex. Finally, when $L_0$ is either the transpose of L or its symmetric part, we obtain the corresponding absolute continuity upon assuming that the antisymmetric part of the coefficients has some controlled oscillation in truncated cones for $\omega _{L_0}$ -almost every vertex.

We extend the modularity lifting result of P. Kassaei (‘Modularity lifting in parallel weight one’,J. Amer. Math. Soc.26 (1) (2013), 199–225) to allow Galois representations with some ramification at $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}p$. We also prove modularity mod 5 of certain Galois representations. We use these results to prove new cases of the strong Artin conjecture over totally real fields in which 5 is unramified. As an ingredient of the proof, we provide a general result on the automatic analytic continuation of overconvergent $p$-adic Hilbert modular forms of finite slope which substantially generalizes a similar result in P. Kassaei (‘Modularity lifting in parallel weight one’, J. Amer. Math. Soc.26 (1) (2013), 199–225).

We introduce and study a multi-marginal optimal partial transport problem. Under a natural and sharp condition on the dominating marginals, we establish uniqueness of the optimal plan. Our strategy of proof establishes and exploits a connection with another novel problem, which we call the Monge–Kantorovich partial barycenter problem (with quadratic cost). This latter problem has a natural interpretation as a variant of the factories-and-mines description of optimal transport. We then turn our attention to various analytic properties of these two problems. Of particular interest, we show that monotonicity of the active marginals with respect to the amount $m$ of mass to be transported can fail, a surprising difference from the two-marginal case.

We prove a conjecture of Maulik, Pandharipande and Thomas expressing the Gromov–Witten invariants of K3 surfaces for divisibility 2 curve classes in all genera in terms of weakly holomorphic quasi-modular forms of level 2. Then we establish the holomorphic anomaly equation in divisibility 2 in all genera. Our approach involves a refined boundary induction, relying on the top tautological group of the moduli space of smooth curves, together with a degeneration formula for the reduced virtual fundamental class with imprimitive curve classes. We use double ramification relations with target variety as a new tool to prove the initial condition. The relationship between the holomorphic anomaly equation for higher divisibility and the conjectural multiple cover formula of Oberdieck and Pandharipande is discussed in detail and illustrated with several examples.

In this paper, we show that, with probability $1$ , a random Beltrami field exhibits chaotic regions that coexist with invariant tori of complicated topologies. The motivation to consider this question, which arises in the study of stationary Euler flows in dimension 3, is V.I. Arnold’s 1965 speculation that a typical Beltrami field exhibits the same complexity as the restriction to an energy hypersurface of a generic Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom. The proof hinges on the obtention of asymptotic bounds for the number of horseshoes, zeros and knotted invariant tori and periodic trajectories that a Gaussian random Beltrami field exhibits, which we obtain through a nontrivial extension of the Nazarov–Sodin theory for Gaussian random monochromatic waves and the application of different tools from the theory of dynamical systems, including Kolmogorov–Arnold–Moser (KAM) theory, Melnikov analysis and hyperbolicity. Our results hold both in the case of Beltrami fields on ${\mathbb {R}}^3$ and of high-frequency Beltrami fields on the 3-torus.

Let $G$ be a simple exceptional algebraic group of adjoint type over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and let $X=\text{PSL}_{2}(p)$ be a subgroup of $G$ containing a regular unipotent element $x$ of $G$. By a theorem of Testerman, $x$ is contained in a connected subgroup of $G$ of type $A_{1}$. In this paper we prove that with two exceptions, $X$ itself is contained in such a subgroup (the exceptions arise when $(G,p)=(E_{6},13)$ or $(E_{7},19)$). This extends earlier work of Seitz and Testerman, who established the containment under some additional conditions on $p$ and the embedding of $X$ in $G$. We discuss applications of our main result to the study of the subgroup structure of finite groups of Lie type.

We give two applications of the 2-Engel relation, classically studied in finite and Lie groups, to the 4-dimensional (4D) topological surgery conjecture. The A–B slice problem, a reformulation of the surgery conjecture for free groups, is shown to admit a homotopy solution. We also exhibit a new collection of universal surgery problems, defined using ramifications of homotopically trivial links. More generally we show how $n$ -Engel relations arise from higher-order double points of surfaces in 4-space.

Recently, settling a question of Erdős, Balogh, and Petříčková showed that there are at most $2^{n^{2}/8+o(n^{2})}$$n$-vertex maximal triangle-free graphs, matching the previously known lower bound. Here, we characterize the typical structure of maximal triangle-free graphs. We show that almost every maximal triangle-free graph $G$ admits a vertex partition $X\cup Y$ such that $G[X]$ is a perfect matching and $Y$ is an independent set.

Our proof uses the Ruzsa–Szemerédi removal lemma, the Erdős–Simonovits stability theorem, and recent results of Balogh, Morris, and Samotij and Saxton and Thomason on characterization of the structure of independent sets in hypergraphs. The proof also relies on a new bound on the number of maximal independent sets in triangle-free graphs with many vertex-disjoint $P_{3}$s, which is of independent interest.

Given a property of representations satisfying a basic stability condition, Ramakrishna developed a variant of Mazur’s Galois deformation theory for representations with that property. We introduce an axiomatic definition of pseudorepresentations with such a property. Among other things, we show that pseudorepresentations with a property enjoy a good deformation theory, generalizing Ramakrishna’s theory to pseudorepresentations.
