Let $F$ be a totally real field and let $p$ be an odd prime which is totally split in $F$. We define and study one-dimensional ‘partial’ eigenvarieties interpolating Hilbert modular forms over $F$ with weight varying only at a single place $v$ above $p$. For these eigenvarieties, we show that methods developed by Liu, Wan and Xiao apply and deduce that, over a boundary annulus in weight space of sufficiently small radius, the partial eigenvarieties decompose as a disjoint union of components which are finite over weight space. We apply this result to prove the parity version of the Bloch–Kato conjecture for finite slope Hilbert modular forms with trivial central character (with a technical assumption if $[F:\mathbb{Q}]$ is odd), by reducing to the case of parallel weight $2$. As another consequence of our results on partial eigenvarieties, we show, still under the assumption that $p$ is totally split in $F$, that the ‘full’ (dimension $1+[F:\mathbb{Q}]$) cuspidal Hilbert modular eigenvariety has the property that many (all, if $[F:\mathbb{Q}]$ is even) irreducible components contain a classical point with noncritical slopes and parallel weight $2$ (with some character at $p$ whose conductor can be explicitly bounded), or any other algebraic weight.

We show that the transition matrix from the polytabloid basis to the web basis of the irreducible $\mathfrak{S}_{2n}$-representation of shape $(n,n)$ has nonnegative integer entries. This proves a conjecture of Russell and Tymoczko [Int. Math. Res. Not., 2019(5) (2019), 1479–1502].

In recent works [Gonçalves and Mansfield, Stud. Appl. Math., 128 (2012), 1–29; Mansfield, A Practical Guide to the Invariant Calculus (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2010)], the authors considered various Lagrangians, which are invariant under a Lie group action, in the case where the independent variables are themselves invariant. Using a moving frame for the Lie group action, they showed how to obtain the invariantized Euler–Lagrange equations and the space of conservation laws in terms of vectors of invariants and the Adjoint representation of a moving frame. In this paper, we show how these calculations extend to the general case where the independent variables may participate in the action. We take for our main expository example the standard linear action of SL(2) on the two independent variables. This choice is motivated by applications to variational fluid problems which conserve potential vorticity. We also give the results for Lagrangians invariant under the standard linear action of SL(3) on the three independent variables.

We give a new proof of Vinogradov’s three primes theorem, which asserts that all sufficiently large odd positive integers can be written as the sum of three primes. Existing proofs rely on the theory of $L$-functions, either explicitly or implicitly. Our proof is sieve theoretical and uses a transference principle, the idea of which was first developed by Green [Ann. of Math. (2) 161 (3) (2005), 1609–1636] and used in the proof of Green and Tao’s theorem [Ann. of Math. (2) 167 (2) (2008), 481–547]. To make our argument work, we also develop an additive combinatorial result concerning popular sums, which may be of independent interest.

We prove a lower bound for the free energy (per unit volume) of the two-dimensional Bose gas in the thermodynamic limit. We show that the free energy at density $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ and inverse temperature $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$ differs from the one of the noninteracting system by the correction term $4\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}^{2}|\ln \,a^{2}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}|^{-1}(2-[1-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{\text{c}}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}]_{+}^{2})$. Here, $a$ is the scattering length of the interaction potential, $[\cdot ]_{+}=\max \{0,\cdot \}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{\text{c}}$ is the inverse Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless critical temperature for superfluidity. The result is valid in the dilute limit $a^{2}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}\ll 1$ and if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}\gtrsim 1$.

We consider the spectral behavior and noncommutative geometry of commutators $[P,f]$, where $P$ is an operator of order 0 with geometric origin and $f$ a multiplication operator by a function. When $f$ is Hölder continuous, the spectral asymptotics is governed by singularities. We study precise spectral asymptotics through the computation of Dixmier traces; such computations have only been considered in less singular settings. Even though a Weyl law fails for these operators, and no pseudodifferential calculus is available, variations of Connes’ residue trace theorem and related integral formulas continue to hold. On the circle, a large class of nonmeasurable Hankel operators is obtained from Hölder continuous functions $f$, displaying a wide range of nonclassical spectral asymptotics beyond the Weyl law. The results extend from Riemannian manifolds to contact manifolds and noncommutative tori.

We consider the large polaron described by the Fröhlich Hamiltonian and study its energy-momentum relation defined as the lowest possible energy as a function of the total momentum. Using a suitable family of trial states, we derive an optimal parabolic upper bound for the energy-momentum relation in the limit of strong coupling. The upper bound consists of a momentum independent term that agrees with the predicted two-term expansion for the ground state energy of the strongly coupled polaron at rest and a term that is quadratic in the momentum with coefficient given by the inverse of twice the classical effective mass introduced by Landau and Pekar.

Let $X$ be a compact 4-manifold with boundary. We study the space of hyperkähler triples $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{1},\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{2},\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{3}$ on $X$, modulo diffeomorphisms which are the identity on the boundary. We prove that this moduli space is a smooth infinite-dimensional manifold and describe the tangent space in terms of triples of closed anti-self-dual 2-forms. We also explore the corresponding boundary value problem: a hyperkähler triple restricts to a closed framing of the bundle of 2-forms on the boundary; we identify the infinitesimal deformations of this closed framing that can be filled in to hyperkähler deformations of the original triple. Finally we study explicit examples coming from gravitational instantons with isometric actions of $\text{SU}(2)$.

This paper is dedicated to a problem raised by Jacquet Tits in 1956: the Weyl group of a Chevalley group should find an interpretation as a group over what is nowadays called $\mathbb{F}_{1}$, the field with one element. Based on Part I of The geometry of blueprints, we introduce the class of Tits morphisms between blue schemes. The resulting Tits category$\text{Sch}_{{\mathcal{T}}}$ comes together with a base extension to (semiring) schemes and the so-called Weyl extension to sets. We prove for ${\mathcal{G}}$ in a wide class of Chevalley groups—which includes the special and general linear groups, symplectic and special orthogonal groups, and all types of adjoint groups—that a linear representation of ${\mathcal{G}}$ defines a model $G$ in $\text{Sch}_{{\mathcal{T}}}$ whose Weyl extension is the Weyl group $W$ of ${\mathcal{G}}$. We call such models Tits–Weyl models. The potential of Tits–Weyl models lies in (a) their intrinsic definition that is given by a linear representation; (b) the (yet to be formulated) unified approach towards thick and thin geometries; and (c) the extension of a Chevalley group to a functor on blueprints, which makes it, in particular, possible to consider Chevalley groups over semirings. This opens applications to idempotent analysis and tropical geometry.

The Chern–Schwartz–MacPherson class of a hypersurface in a nonsingular variety may be computed directly from the Segre class of the Jacobian subscheme of the hypersurface; this has been known for a number of years. We generalize this fact to arbitrary embeddable schemes: for every subscheme $X$ of a nonsingular variety $V$, we define an associated subscheme $\mathscr{Y}$ of a projective bundle $\mathscr{V}$ over $V$ and provide an explicit formula for the Chern–Schwartz–MacPherson class of $X$ in terms of the Segre class of $\mathscr{Y}$ in $\mathscr{V}$. If $X$ is a local complete intersection, a version of the result yields a direct expression for the Milnor class of $X$.

For $V=\mathbb{P}^{n}$, we also obtain expressions for the Chern–Schwartz–MacPherson class of $X$ in terms of the ‘Segre zeta function’ of $\mathscr{Y}$.

This paper develops the theory of multisymplectic variational integrators for nonsmooth continuum mechanics with constraints. Typical problems are the impact of an elastic body on a rigid plate or the collision of two elastic bodies. The integrators are obtained by combining, at the continuous and discrete levels, the variational multisymplectic formulation of nonsmooth continuum mechanics with the generalized Lagrange multiplier approach for optimization problems with nonsmooth constraints. These integrators verify a spacetime multisymplectic formula that generalizes the symplectic property of time integrators. In addition, they preserve the energy during the impact. In the presence of symmetry, a discrete version of the Noether theorem is verified. All these properties are inherited from the variational character of the integrator. Numerical illustrations are presented.

Orthogonality is a fundamental theme in representation theory and Fourier analysis. An orthogonality relation for characters of finite abelian groups (now recognized as an orthogonality relation on $\mathrm {GL}(1)$) was used by Dirichlet to prove infinitely many primes in arithmetic progressions. Orthogonality relations for $\mathrm {GL}(2)$ and $\mathrm {GL}(3)$ have been worked on by many researchers with a broad range of applications to number theory. We present here, for the first time, very explicit orthogonality relations for the real group $\mathrm {GL}(4, \mathbb R)$ with a power savings error term. The proof requires novel techniques in the computation of the geometric side of the Kuznetsov trace formula.

We give a construction that takes a simple linear algebraic group G over a field and produces a commutative, unital, and simple non-associative algebra A over that field. Two attractions of this construction are that (1) when G has type $E_8$, the algebra A is obtained by adjoining a unit to the 3875-dimensional representation; and (2) it is effective, in that the product operation on A can be implemented on a computer. A description of the algebra in the $E_8$ case has been requested for some time, and interest has been increased by the recent proof that $E_8$ is the full automorphism group of that algebra. The algebras obtained by our construction have an unusual Peirce spectrum.

The Hajnal–Szemerédi theorem states that for any positive integer $r$ and any multiple $n$ of $r$, if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}(G)\geqslant (1-1/r)n$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $n/r$ vertex-disjoint copies of the complete graph on $r$ vertices. We prove a very general analogue of this result for directed graphs: for any positive integer $r$ with $r\neq 3$ and any sufficiently large multiple $n$ of $r$, if $G$ is a directed graph on $n$ vertices and every vertex is incident to at least $2(1-1/r)n-1$ directed edges, then $G$ can be partitioned into $n/r$ vertex-disjoint subgraphs of size $r$ each of which contain every tournament on $r$ vertices (the case $r=3$ is different and was handled previously). In fact, this result is a consequence of a tiling result for standard multigraphs (that is multigraphs where there are at most two edges between any pair of vertices). A related Turán-type result is also proven.

We establish vortex dynamics for the time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau equation for asymptotically large numbers of vortices for the problem without a gauge field and either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. As our main tool, we establish quantitative bounds on several fundamental quantities, including the kinetic energy, that lead to explicit convergence rates. For dilute vortex liquids, we prove that sequences of solutions converge to the hydrodynamic limit.

Remixed Eulerian numbers are a polynomial q-deformation of Postnikov’s mixed Eulerian numbers. They arose naturally in previous work by the authors concerning the permutahedral variety and subsume well-known families of polynomials such as q-binomial coefficients and Garsia–Remmel’s q-hit numbers. We study their combinatorics in more depth. As polynomials in q, they are shown to be symmetric and unimodal. By interpreting them as computing success probabilities in a simple probabilistic process we arrive at a combinatorial interpretation involving weighted trees. By decomposing the permutahedron into certain combinatorial cubes, we obtain a second combinatorial interpretation. At $q=1$, the former recovers Postnikov’s interpretation whereas the latter recovers Liu’s interpretation, both of which were obtained via methods different from ours.

A recent paper of Balogh, Li and Treglown [3] initiated the study of Dirac-type problems for ordered graphs. In this paper, we prove a number of results in this area. In particular, we determine asymptotically the minimum degree threshold for forcing

1. (i) a perfect H-tiling in an ordered graph, for any fixed ordered graph H of interval chromatic number at least $3$ ;

2. (ii) an H-tiling in an ordered graph G covering a fixed proportion of the vertices of G (for any fixed ordered graph H);

3. (iii) an H-cover in an ordered graph (for any fixed ordered graph H).

The first two of these results resolve questions of Balogh, Li and Treglown, whilst (iii) resolves a question of Falgas-Ravry. Note that (i) combined with a result from [3] completely determines the asymptotic minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect H-tiling. Additionally, we prove a result that, combined with a theorem of Balogh, Li and Treglown, asymptotically determines the minimum degree threshold for forcing an almost perfect H-tiling in an ordered graph (for any fixed ordered graph H). Our work therefore provides ordered graph analogues of the seminal tiling theorems of Kühn and Osthus [Combinatorica 2009] and of Komlós [Combinatorica 2000]. Each of our results exhibits some curious, and perhaps unexpected, behaviour. Our solution to (i) makes use of a novel absorbing argument.

In this paper, we prove one divisibility of the Iwasawa–Greenberg main conjecture for the Rankin–Selberg product of a weight two cusp form and an ordinary complex multiplication form of higher weight, using congruences between Klingen Eisenstein series and cusp forms on $\mathrm {GU}(3,1)$, generalizing an earlier result of the third-named author to allow nonordinary cusp forms. The main result is a key input in the third-named author’s proof of Kobayashi’s $\pm $-main conjecture for supersingular elliptic curves. The new ingredient here is developing a semiordinary Hida theory along an appropriate smaller weight space and a study of the semiordinary Eisenstein family.

Toeplitz conjectured that any simple planar loop inscribes a square. Here we prove variants of Toeplitz’s square peg problem. We prove Hadwiger’s 1971 conjecture that any simple loop in $3$-space inscribes a parallelogram. We show that any simple planar loop inscribes sufficiently many rectangles that their vertices are dense in the loop. If the loop is rectifiable, there is a rectangle that cuts the loop into four pieces which can be rearranged to form two loops of equal length. (The previous two results are independently due to Schwartz.) A rectifiable loop in $d$-space can be cut into $(r-1)(d+1)+1$ pieces that can be rearranged by translations to form $r$ loops of equal length. We relate our results to fair divisions of necklaces in the sense of Alon and to Tverberg-type results. This provides a new approach and a common framework to obtain inscribability results for the class of all continuous curves.
