COUNTER report types

A librarian guide to COUNTER reporting and report types, as well as turnaway reports for books and journals.

COUNTER report types

TR_J1: Journal Requests (Controlled) - number of successful full-text article requests by month and journal, excluding open and free-to-read content - broken down by metric type (total item requests, unique item requests)

TR_J2: Journal Access Denied - report of access denied activity for journal articles by month and journal

TR_J3: Journal Usage by Access Type - report of usage on journal content across metric types (total item investigations, unique item investigations, total item requests, unique item requests), broken down by access type (controlled, open, or other free-to-read)

TR_J4: Journal Requests by Year of Publication (Controlled) - number of successful full-text article requests by journal and year of publication, excluding open and free-to-read content - broken down by metric type (total item requests, unique item requests)

TR_B1: Book Requests (Controlled) - number of successful full-text requests for book and Element content, excluding open and free-to-read content - broken down by metric type (total item requests, unique title requests)

TR_B2: Book Access Denied - report of access denied activity for book and Element content

TR_B3: Book Usage by Access Type - report of usage on book and Element content across metric types (total item investigations, unique item investigations, total item requests, unique item requests, unique title investigations, unique title requests), broken down by access type (controlled, open, or other free-to-read)

PR_P1: Platform Usage - platform-level usage by metric type (total item requests, unique item requests unique title requests, platform searches), and data type (book, journal, platform)

Non COUNTER reports

Alternative journal turnaway report - counts the following events:


  • Clicks on "Recommend to librarian" from journal homepage
  • Clicks on the "Get access" link from a listing or search results page (a turnaway will not be recorded from the article page itself as this is already recorded as a regular turnaway in COUNTER report JR2)

Alternative book turnaway report - counts the following events:


  • Clicks on "Recommend to librarian" from book homepage
  • Clicks on "Buy the print book" from book or chapter pages where there is no access (the report will not record a turnaway if a user has access)
  • Clicks on the "Get access" link from a listing or search results page (a turnaway will not be recorded from the book/chapter page itself as this is already recorded as a regular turnaway in COUNTER report BR3)
