Completing your publishing agreement
When you publish with Cambridge we do not typically ask for a transfer of copyright ownership, just a licence to publish the content. This means that copyright ownership of the content we publish remains unchanged.
Following editorial acceptance, we will need both a completed Author Information Form and a signed publishing agreement before we can begin production of an article.
We will ask you to grant us a licence so that we have the necessary rights to publish your article. If you choose Gold Open Access, we will ask for a non-exclusive licence. If you do not choose Gold Open Access, we will ask for an exclusive licence.
Following editorial acceptance of a manuscript, the corresponding author will be sent an Author Information Form (AIF) to review. After completion of the AIF, the publishing agreement will be sent from Ironclad to be checked and signed digitally by the signer(s) indicated in the AIF, after which production of the manuscript will begin.
More detailed information can be found on each journal’s ‘Publishing agreement’ page, which can be found under the ‘Author instructions’ section of the ‘Journal information’ tab on the journal’s home page.
The Author Information Form (AIF) asks the Corresponding Author to specify publication options and contract information, which will then be used to generate a tailored publishing agreement that incorporates all relevant licence terms. The AIF is also used to specify who will sign the publishing agreement for your manuscript.
Please note that we cannot create your publishing agreement or begin production of your manuscript until the AIF is complete.
Ironclad is the system Cambridge uses to manage digital publishing agreements.
After completing your Author Information Form, Ironclad will send a digital publishing agreement form to the signer(s) nominated in your AIF, from [email protected].
If all copyright in the manuscript belongs to the authors, the Corresponding Author will need to sign on behalf of all authors, as explained in our authorship and contributorship policy.
If the copyright in the manuscript is held by an entity such as an institution or employer, our Author Information Form will ask the corresponding author to specify an authorised signer from that entity.
Regardless of who signs the publishing agreement, the corresponding author will always receive a copy of the signed publishing agreement for their records.
We are aware that the United States Government does not consider itself to be the copyright holder of contributions written under its employment, and that in the United States the copyright is considered to be owned by the United States public. However, we are a global publisher that needs to advise a global readership. Therefore, while the contribution is not subject to copyright protection within the United States, elsewhere it is owned by the United States Government and licensed to the journal on a non-exclusive basis. Specific terms to reflect this will be factored into our publishing agreements as long as, in the Author Information Form, the Corresponding Author selects the “entity type” under the “copyright owner” section as “Government (United States)”.
Furthermore, we have worked with legal counsels at certain agencies of the United States Government who have agreed to this arrangement and thus have negotiated “prior-agreed exception” terms with us. As long as the Corresponding Author selects the “type of US Government entity that owns the copyright” as one of the entities in question (i.e. NASA, CDC, or NIH - which includes FDA, please just enter the required entity into the 'entity name’ and ‘copyright notice’ fields) in the Author Information Form, our Legal team will enter the pre-agreed exception terms accordingly. Please include the authorised signer’s name and email address in the signer details section. This is usually an authorised representative of the US Government agency in question.

Issues with the publishing agreement process
If you requested changes to any key manuscript metadata in your Author Information Form, our internal teams will need to review these and might contact you for further information. Following this step, the publishing agreement will be sent to the signer(s) specified in your AIF.
For questions about the status of your publishing agreement, please contact [email protected].
The title listed in the contract is provisional and not used to determine the final title as published in the Journal. You will have the opportunity during production to check the proofs and request any changes before your article is published.
Please complete the IRF/sign the agreement as your article cannot pass into production until the agreement is signed.
Please contact [email protected], who will request an amendment to your Author Publishing Agreement. Please ensure that you include the reason for requesting the change;
Chose to decline Gold OA publication in error
Subsequently discovered the article is eligible for Gold OA publication without payment of any APC thanks to an applicable waiver
Any other reason for requesting the change
Your journal has now adopted the Ironclad system and we need you to complete the new form. Please locate this email and complete the Information Request Form (IRF) / Author Publishing Agreement at your earliest convenience.
