We study various families of Artin $L$-functions attached to geometric parametrizations of number fields. In each case we find the Sato–Tate measure of the family and determine the symmetry type of the distribution of the low-lying zeros.

We obtain a sparse domination principle for an arbitrary family of functions $f(x,Q)$ , where $x\in {\mathbb R}^{n}$ and Q is a cube in ${\mathbb R}^{n}$ . When applied to operators, this result recovers our recent works [37, 39]. On the other hand, our sparse domination principle can be also applied to non-operator objects. In particular, we show applications to generalised Poincaré–Sobolev inequalities, tent spaces and general dyadic sums. Moreover, the flexibility of our result allows us to treat operators that are not localisable in the sense of [39], as we will demonstrate in an application to vector-valued square functions.

We study the relationship between a $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}$-Souslin tree $T$ and its reduced powers $T^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}/{\mathcal{U}}$.

Previous works addressed this problem from the viewpoint of a single power $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$, whereas here, tools are developed for controlling different powers simultaneously. As a sample corollary, we obtain the consistency of an $\aleph _{6}$-Souslin tree $T$ and a sequence of uniform ultrafilters $\langle {\mathcal{U}}_{n}\mid n<6\rangle$ such that $T^{\aleph _{n}}/{\mathcal{U}}_{n}$ is $\aleph _{6}$-Aronszajn if and only if $n<6$ is not a prime number.

This paper is the first application of the microscopic approach to Souslin-tree construction, recently introduced by the authors. A major component here is devising a method for constructing trees with a prescribed combination of freeness degree and ascent-path characteristics.

We show that the weak limit of the maximal measures for any degenerating sequence of rational maps on the Riemann sphere ${\hat{{\mathbb{C}}}} $ must be a countable sum of atoms. For a one-parameter family $f_t$ of rational maps, we refine this result by showing that the measures of maximal entropy have a unique limit on $\hat{{\mathbb{C}}}$ as the family degenerates. The family $f_t$ may be viewed as a single rational function on the Berkovich projective line $\mathbf{P}^1_{\mathbb{L}}$ over the completion of the field of formal Puiseux series in $t$, and the limiting measure on $\hat{{\mathbb{C}}}$ is the ‘residual measure’ associated with the equilibrium measure on $\mathbf{P}^1_{\mathbb{L}}$. For the proof, we introduce a new technique for quantizing measures on the Berkovich projective line and demonstrate the uniqueness of solutions to a quantized version of the pullback formula for the equilibrium measure on $\mathbf{P}^1_{\mathbb{L}}$.

We study several kinds of subschemes of mixed characteristic models of Shimura varieties which admit good (partial) toroidal and minimal compactifications, with familiar boundary stratifications and formal local structures, as if they were Shimura varieties in characteristic zero. We also generalize Koecher’s principle and the relative vanishing of subcanonical extensions for coherent sheaves, and Pink’s and Morel’s formulas for étale sheaves, to the context of such subschemes.

We continue the study of n-dependent groups, fields and related structures, largely motivated by the conjecture that every n-dependent field is dependent. We provide evidence toward this conjecture by showing that every infinite n-dependent valued field of positive characteristic is henselian, obtaining a variant of Shelah’s Henselianity Conjecture in this case and generalizing a recent result of Johnson for dependent fields. Additionally, we prove a result on intersections of type-definable connected components over generic sets of parameters in n-dependent groups, generalizing Shelah’s absoluteness of $G^{00}$ in dependent theories and relative absoluteness of $G^{00}$ in $2$-dependent theories. In an effort to clarify the scope of this conjecture, we provide new examples of strictly $2$-dependent fields with additional structure, showing that Granger’s examples of non-degenerate bilinear forms over dependent fields are $2$-dependent. Along the way, we obtain some purely model-theoretic results of independent interest: we show that n-dependence is witnessed by formulas with all but one variable singletons; provide a type-counting criterion for $2$-dependence and use it to deduce $2$-dependence for compositions of dependent relations with arbitrary binary functions (the Composition Lemma); and show that an expansion of a geometric theory T by a generic predicate is dependent if and only if it is n-dependent for some n, if and only if the algebraic closure in T is disintegrated. An appendix by Martin Bays provides an explicit isomorphism in the Kaplan-Scanlon-Wagner theorem.

This is the first of a series of papers concerning what might be thought of as ‘locally grouped spaces’, in a loose analogy with the locally ringed spaces of algebraic geometry. The spaces that we have in mind are simplicial sets that generalise the simplicial sets that underlie and determine the classifying spaces of finite (or compact) groups. If the analogy is pursued, then the role of ‘structure sheaf’ is provided by the ‘fusion systems’ associated with these spaces. Our approach here will be purely algebraic and combinatorial, so we will not be concerned with topological realisations. All of the groups to be considered will be finite; but a parallel series of papers representing some joint work with Alex Gonzalez will considerably broaden the scope.

The Ramsey number $R(F,H)$ is the minimum number N such that any N-vertex graph either contains a copy of F or its complement contains H. Burr in 1981 proved a pleasingly general result that, for any graph H, provided n is sufficiently large, a natural lower bound construction gives the correct Ramsey number involving cycles: $R(C_n,H)=(n-1)(\chi (H)-1)+\sigma (H)$ , where $\sigma (H)$ is the minimum possible size of a colour class in a $\chi (H)$ -colouring of H. Allen, Brightwell and Skokan conjectured that the same should be true already when $n\geq \lvert H\rvert \chi (H)$ .

We improve this 40-year-old result of Burr by giving quantitative bounds of the form $n\geq C\lvert H\rvert \log ^4\chi (H)$ , which is optimal up to the logarithmic factor. In particular, this proves a strengthening of the Allen–Brightwell–Skokan conjecture for all graphs H with large chromatic number.

The frog model is a branching random walk on a graph in which particles branch only at unvisited sites. Consider an initial particle density of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ on the full $d$-ary tree of height $n$. If $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}(d^{2})$, all of the vertices are visited in time $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E9}(n\log n)$ with high probability. Conversely, if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}=O(d)$ the cover time is $\exp (\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E9}(\sqrt{n}))$ with high probability.

We construct an $S_{3}$-symmetric probability distribution on $\{(a,b,c)\in \mathbb{Z}_{{\geqslant}0}^{3}\,:\,a+b+c=n\}$ such that its marginal achieves the maximum entropy among all probability distributions on $\{0,1,\ldots ,n\}$ with mean $n/3$. Existence of such a distribution verifies a conjecture of Kleinberg et al. [‘The growth rate of tri-colored sum-free sets’, Discrete Anal. (2018), Paper No. 12, arXiv:1607.00047v1], which is motivated by the study of sum-free sets.

Let $M$ be a regular matroid. The Jacobian group $\text{Jac}(M)$ of $M$ is a finite abelian group whose cardinality is equal to the number of bases of $M$. This group generalizes the definition of the Jacobian group (also known as the critical group or sandpile group) $\operatorname{Jac}(G)$ of a graph $G$ (in which case bases of the corresponding regular matroid are spanning trees of $G$). There are many explicit combinatorial bijections in the literature between the Jacobian group of a graph $\text{Jac}(G)$ and spanning trees. However, most of the known bijections use vertices of $G$ in some essential way and are inherently ‘nonmatroidal’. In this paper, we construct a family of explicit and easy-to-describe bijections between the Jacobian group of a regular matroid $M$ and bases of $M$, many instances of which are new even in the case of graphs. We first describe our family of bijections in a purely combinatorial way in terms of orientations; more specifically, we prove that the Jacobian group of $M$ admits a canonical simply transitive action on the set ${\mathcal{G}}(M)$ of circuit–cocircuit reversal classes of $M$, and then define a family of combinatorial bijections $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E},\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}^{\ast }}$ between ${\mathcal{G}}(M)$ and bases of $M$. (Here $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$ (respectively $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}^{\ast }$) is an acyclic signature of the set of circuits (respectively cocircuits) of $M$.) We then give a geometric interpretation of each such map $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E},\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}^{\ast }}$ in terms of zonotopal subdivisions which is used to verify that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$ is indeed a bijection. Finally, we give a combinatorial interpretation of lattice points in the zonotope $Z$; by passing to dilations we obtain a new derivation of Stanley’s formula linking the Ehrhart polynomial of $Z$ to the Tutte polynomial of $M$.

We prove a generalised super-adiabatic theorem for extended fermionic systems assuming a spectral gap only in the bulk. More precisely, we assume that the infinite system has a unique ground state and that the corresponding Gelfand–Naimark–Segal Hamiltonian has a spectral gap above its eigenvalue zero. Moreover, we show that a similar adiabatic theorem also holds in the bulk of finite systems up to errors that vanish faster than any inverse power of the system size, although the corresponding finite-volume Hamiltonians need not have a spectral gap.

In this paper, we show the existence of an action of Chow correspondences on the cohomology of reciprocity sheaves. In order to do so, we prove a number of structural results, such as a projective bundle formula, a blow-up formula, a Gysin sequence and the existence of proper pushforward. In this way, we recover and generalise analogous statements for the cohomology of Hodge sheaves and Hodge-Witt sheaves.

We give several applications of the general theory to problems which have been classically studied. Among these applications, we construct new birational invariants of smooth projective varieties and obstructions to the existence of zero cycles of degree 1 from the cohomology of reciprocity sheaves.

We extend classical density theorems of Borel and Dani–Shalom on lattices in semisimple, respectively solvable algebraic groups over local fields to approximate lattices. Our proofs are based on the observation that Zariski closures of approximate subgroups are close to algebraic subgroups. Our main tools are stationary joinings between the hull dynamical systems of discrete approximate subgroups and their Zariski closures.

The dichromatic number of a graph $G$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that there exists an orientation of the edges of $G$ such that for every partition of the vertices into fewer than $k$ parts, at least one of the parts must contain a directed cycle under this orientation. In 1979, Erdős and Neumann-Lara conjectured that if the dichromatic number of a graph is bounded, so is its chromatic number. We make the first significant progress on this conjecture by proving a fractional version of the conjecture. While our result uses a stronger assumption about the fractional chromatic number, it also gives a much stronger conclusion: if the fractional chromatic number of a graph is at least $t$ , then the fractional version of the dichromatic number of the graph is at least ${\textstyle \frac{1}{4}}t/\log _{2}(2et^{2})$ . This bound is best possible up to a small constant factor. Several related results of independent interest are given.

Let $p$ be a prime number and $F$ a totally real number field. For each prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ above $p$ we construct a Hecke operator $T_{\mathfrak{p}}$ acting on $(\text{mod}\,p^{m})$ Katz Hilbert modular classes which agrees with the classical Hecke operator at $\mathfrak{p}$ for global sections that lift to characteristic zero. Using these operators and the techniques of patching complexes of Calegari and Geraghty we prove that the Galois representations arising from torsion Hilbert modular classes of parallel weight $\mathbf{1}$ are unramified at $p$ when $[F:\mathbb{Q}]=2$. Some partial and some conjectural results are obtained when $[F:\mathbb{Q}]>2$.

For the kernel $B_{\kappa ,a}(x,y)$ of the $(\kappa ,a)$-generalized Fourier transform $\mathcal {F}_{\kappa ,a}$, acting in $L^{2}(\mathbb {R}^{d})$ with the weight $|x|^{a-2}v_{\kappa }(x)$, where $v_{\kappa }$ is the Dunkl weight, we study the important question of when $\|B_{\kappa ,a}\|_{\infty }=B_{\kappa ,a}(0,0)=1$. The positive answer was known for $d\ge 2$ and $\frac {2}{a}\in \mathbb {N}$. We investigate the case $d=1$ and $\frac {2}{a}\in \mathbb {N}$. Moreover, we give sufficient conditions on parameters for $\|B_{\kappa ,a}\|_{\infty }>1$ to hold with $d\ge 1$ and any a.

We also study the image of the Schwartz space under the $\mathcal {F}_{\kappa ,a}$ transform. In particular, we obtain that $\mathcal {F}_{\kappa ,a}(\mathcal {S}(\mathbb {R}^d))=\mathcal {S}(\mathbb {R}^d)$ only if $a=2$. Finally, extending the Dunkl transform, we introduce nondeformed transforms generated by $\mathcal {F}_{\kappa ,a}$ and study their main properties.

Frieze patterns, as introduced by Coxeter in the 1970s, are closely related to cluster algebras without coefficients. A suitable generalization of frieze patterns, linked to cluster algebras with coefficients, has only briefly appeared in an unpublished manuscript by Propp. In this paper, we study these frieze patterns with coefficients systematically and prove various fundamental results, generalizing classic results for frieze patterns. As a consequence, we see how frieze patterns with coefficients can be obtained from classic frieze patterns by cutting out subpolygons from the triangulated polygons associated with classic Conway–Coxeter frieze patterns. We address the question of which frieze patterns with coefficients can be obtained in this way and solve this problem completely for triangles. Finally, we prove a finiteness result for frieze patterns with coefficients by showing that for a given boundary sequence there are only finitely many (nonzero) frieze patterns with coefficients with entries in a subset of the complex numbers without an accumulation point.

We study the geometry of the Thurston metric on the Teichmüller space of hyperbolic structures on a surface $S$. Some of our results on the coarse geometry of this metric apply to arbitrary surfaces $S$ of finite type; however, we focus particular attention on the case where the surface is a once-punctured torus. In that case, our results provide a detailed picture of the infinitesimal, local, and global behavior of the geodesics of the Thurston metric, as well as an analogue of Royden’s theorem.

For an indifference graph G, we define a symmetric function of increasing spanning forests of G. We prove that this symmetric function satisfies certain linear relations, which are also satisfied by the chromatic quasisymmetric function and unicellular $\textrm {LLT}$ polynomials. As a consequence, we give a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the $\textrm {LLT}$ polynomial in the elementary basis (up to a factor of a power of $(q-1)$), strengthening the description given in [4].
