This paper presents a framework for compressed sensing that bridges a gap between existing theory and the current use of compressed sensing in many real-world applications. In doing so, it also introduces a new sampling method that yields substantially improved recovery over existing techniques. In many applications of compressed sensing, including medical imaging, the standard principles of incoherence and sparsity are lacking. Whilst compressed sensing is often used successfully in such applications, it is done largely without mathematical explanation. The framework introduced in this paper provides such a justification. It does so by replacing these standard principles with three more general concepts: asymptotic sparsity, asymptotic incoherence and multilevel random subsampling. Moreover, not only does this work provide such a theoretical justification, it explains several key phenomena witnessed in practice. In particular, and unlike the standard theory, this work demonstrates the dependence of optimal sampling strategies on both the incoherence structure of the sampling operator and on the structure of the signal to be recovered. Another key consequence of this framework is the introduction of a new structured sampling method that exploits these phenomena to achieve significant improvements over current state-of-the-art techniques.

The values at 1 of single-valued multiple polylogarithms span a certain subalgebra of multiple zeta values. The properties of this algebra are studied from the point of view of motivic periods.

We consider large random matrices with a general slowly decaying correlation among its entries. We prove universality of the local eigenvalue statistics and optimal local laws for the resolvent away from the spectral edges, generalizing the recent result of Ajanki et al. [‘Stability of the matrix Dyson equation and random matrices with correlations’, Probab. Theory Related Fields173(1–2) (2019), 293–373] to allow slow correlation decay and arbitrary expectation. The main novel tool is a systematic diagrammatic control of a multivariate cumulant expansion.

We use Lau’s classification of 2-divisible groups using Dieudonné displays to construct integral canonical models for Shimura varieties of abelian type at 2-adic places where the level is hyperspecial.

We develop a comprehensive theory of the stable representation categories of several sequences of groups, including the classical and symmetric groups, and their relation to the unstable categories. An important component of this theory is an array of equivalences between the stable representation category and various other categories, each of which has its own flavor (representation theoretic, combinatorial, commutative algebraic, or categorical) and offers a distinct perspective on the stable category. We use this theory to produce a host of specific results: for example, the construction of injective resolutions of simple objects, duality between the orthogonal and symplectic theories, and a canonical derived auto-equivalence of the general linear theory.

We apply the methods of Heegaard Floer homology to identify topological properties of complex curves in $\mathbb{C}P^{2}$. As one application, we resolve an open conjecture that constrains the Alexander polynomial of the link of the singular point of the curve in the case that there is exactly one singular point, having connected link, and the curve is of genus zero. Generalizations apply in the case of multiple singular points.

We compute the Chow groups and the Fulton–MacPherson operational Chow cohomology ring for a class of singular rational varieties including toric varieties. The computation is closely related to the weight filtration on the ordinary cohomology of these varieties. We use the computation to answer one of the open problems about operational Chow cohomology: it does not have a natural map to ordinary cohomology.

Let $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}\Gamma $ be a compact tropical curve (or metric graph) of genus $g$. Using the theory of tropical theta functions, Mikhalkin and Zharkov proved that there is a canonical effective representative (called a break divisor) for each linear equivalence class of divisors of degree $g$ on $\Gamma $. We present a new combinatorial proof of the fact that there is a unique break divisor in each equivalence class, establishing in the process an ‘integral’ version of this result which is of independent interest. As an application, we provide a ‘geometric proof’ of (a dual version of) Kirchhoff’s celebrated matrix–tree theorem. Indeed, we show that each weighted graph model $G$ for $\Gamma $ gives rise to a canonical polyhedral decomposition of the $g$-dimensional real torus $\mathrm{Pic}^g(\Gamma )$ into parallelotopes $C_T$, one for each spanning tree $T$ of $G$, and the dual Kirchhoff theorem becomes the statement that the volume of $\mathrm{Pic}^g(\Gamma )$ is the sum of the volumes of the cells in the decomposition.

We contribute to the foundations of tropical geometry with a view toward formulating tropical moduli problems, and with the moduli space of curves as our main example. We propose a moduli functor for the moduli space of curves and show that it is representable by a geometric stack over the category of rational polyhedral cones. In this framework, the natural forgetful morphisms between moduli spaces of curves with marked points function as universal curves.

Our approach to tropical geometry permits tropical moduli problems—moduli of curves or otherwise—to be extended to logarithmic schemes. We use this to construct a smooth tropicalization morphism from the moduli space of algebraic curves to the moduli space of tropical curves, and we show that this morphism commutes with all of the tautological morphisms.

We obtain partial improvement toward the pointwise convergence problem of Schrödinger solutions, in the general setting of fractal measure. In particular, we show that, for $n\geqslant 3$, $\lim _{t\rightarrow 0}e^{it\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}}f(x)$$=f(x)$ almost everywhere with respect to Lebesgue measure for all $f\in H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ provided that $s>(n+1)/2(n+2)$. The proof uses linear refined Strichartz estimates. We also prove a multilinear refined Strichartz using decoupling and multilinear Kakeya.

In this paper, we consider the existence of multi-soliton structures for the nonlinear Klein–Gordon (NLKG) equation in $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}\mathbb{R}^{1+d}$. We prove that, independently of the unstable character of NLKG solitons, it is possible to construct a $N$-soliton family of solutions to the NLKG equation, of dimension $2N$, globally well defined in the energy space $H^1\times L^2$ for all large positive times. The method of proof involves the generalization of previous works on supercritical Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and generalized Korteweg–de Vries (gKdV) equations by Martel, Merle, and the first author [R. Côte, Y. Martel and F. Merle, Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 27 (1) (2011), 273–302] to the wave case, where we replace the unstable mode associated to the linear NLKG operator by two generalized directions that are controlled without appealing to modulation theory. As a byproduct, we generalize the linear theory described in Grillakis, Shatah, and Strauss [J. Funct. Anal. 74 (1) (1987), 160–197] and Duyckaerts and Merle [Int. Math. Res. Pap. IMRP (2008), Art ID rpn002] to the case of boosted solitons, and provide new solutions to be studied using the recent work of Nakanishi and Schlag [Zurich Lectures in Advanced Mathematics, vi+253 pp (European Mathematical Society (EMS), Zürich, 2011)] theory.

We study properties of Sobolev-type metrics on the space of immersed plane curves. We show that the geodesic equation for Sobolev-type metrics with constant coefficients of order 2 and higher is globally well-posed for smooth initial data as well as for initial data in certain Sobolev spaces. Thus the space of closed plane curves equipped with such a metric is geodesically complete. We find lower bounds for the geodesic distance in terms of curvature and its derivatives.

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve without complex multiplication (CM) over a number field $K$ , and let $G_{E}(\ell )$ be the image of the Galois representation induced by the action of the absolute Galois group of  $K$ on the $\ell$ -torsion subgroup of  $E$ . We present two probabilistic algorithms to simultaneously determine $G_{E}(\ell )$ up to local conjugacy for all primes $\ell$ by sampling images of Frobenius elements; one is of Las Vegas type and the other is a Monte Carlo algorithm. They determine $G_{E}(\ell )$ up to one of at most two isomorphic conjugacy classes of subgroups of $\mathbf{GL}_{2}(\mathbf{Z}/\ell \mathbf{Z})$ that have the same semisimplification, each of which occurs for an elliptic curve isogenous to $E$ . Under the GRH, their running times are polynomial in the bit-size $n$ of an integral Weierstrass equation for  $E$ , and for our Monte Carlo algorithm, quasilinear in $n$ . We have applied our algorithms to the non-CM elliptic curves in Cremona’s tables and the Stein–Watkins database, some 140 million curves of conductor up to  $10^{10}$ , thereby obtaining a conjecturally complete list of 63 exceptional Galois images $G_{E}(\ell )$ that arise for $E/\mathbf{Q}$ without CM. Under this conjecture, we determine a complete list of 160 exceptional Galois images $G_{E}(\ell )$ that arise for non-CM elliptic curves over quadratic fields with rational $j$ -invariants. We also give examples of exceptional Galois images that arise for non-CM elliptic curves over quadratic fields only when the $j$ -invariant is irrational.

The Hilbert scheme $X^{[3]}$ of length-3 subschemes of a smooth projective variety $X$ is known to be smooth and projective. We investigate whether the property of having a multiplicative Chow–Künneth decomposition is stable under taking the Hilbert cube. This is achieved by considering an explicit resolution of the rational map $X^{3}{\dashrightarrow}X^{[3]}$. The case of the Hilbert square was taken care of in Shen and Vial [Mem. Amer. Math. Soc.240(1139) (2016), vii+163 pp]. The archetypical examples of varieties endowed with a multiplicative Chow–Künneth decomposition is given by abelian varieties. Recent work seems to suggest that hyperKähler varieties share the same property. Roughly, if a smooth projective variety $X$ has a multiplicative Chow–Künneth decomposition, then the Chow rings of its powers $X^{n}$ have a filtration, which is the expected Bloch–Beilinson filtration, that is split.

We establish an upper bound for the ground state energy per unit volume of a dilute Bose gas in the thermodynamic limit, capturing the correct second-order term, as predicted by the Lee–Huang–Yang formula. This result was first established in [20] by H.-T. Yau and J. Yin. Our proof, which applies to repulsive and compactly supported $V \in L^3 (\mathbb {R}^3)$ , gives better rates and, in our opinion, is substantially simpler.

A collection of $k$ sets is said to form a $k$-sunflower, or $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}$-system, if the intersection of any two sets from the collection is the same, and we call a family of sets ${\mathcal{F}}$sunflower-free if it contains no $3$-sunflowers. Following the recent breakthrough of Ellenberg and Gijswijt (‘On large subsets of $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n}$ with no three-term arithmetic progression’, Ann. of Math. (2) 185 (2017), 339–343); (‘Progression-free sets in $\mathbb{Z}_{4}^{n}$ are exponentially small’, Ann. of Math. (2) 185 (2017), 331–337) we apply the polynomial method directly to Erdős–Szemerédi sunflower problem (Erdős and Szemerédi, ‘Combinatorial properties of systems of sets’, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 24 (1978), 308–313) and prove that any sunflower-free family ${\mathcal{F}}$ of subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots ,n\}$ has size at most

We prove that an $L^{\infty }$ potential in the Schrödinger equation in three and higher dimensions can be uniquely determined from a finite number of boundary measurements, provided it belongs to a known finite dimensional subspace ${\mathcal{W}}$. As a corollary, we obtain a similar result for Calderón’s inverse conductivity problem. Lipschitz stability estimates and a globally convergent nonlinear reconstruction algorithm for both inverse problems are also presented. These are the first results on global uniqueness, stability and reconstruction for nonlinear inverse boundary value problems with finitely many measurements. We also discuss a few relevant examples of finite dimensional subspaces ${\mathcal{W}}$, including bandlimited and piecewise constant potentials, and explicitly compute the number of required measurements as a function of $\dim {\mathcal{W}}$.

Let $X$ be a space of homogeneous type and $L$ be a nonnegative self-adjoint operator on $L^{2}(X)$ satisfying Gaussian upper bounds on its heat kernels. In this paper, we develop the theory of weighted Besov spaces ${\dot{B}}_{p,q,w}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},L}(X)$ and weighted Triebel–Lizorkin spaces ${\dot{F}}_{p,q,w}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},L}(X)$ associated with the operator $L$ for the full range $0<p,q\leqslant \infty$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in \mathbb{R}$ and $w$ being in the Muckenhoupt weight class $A_{\infty }$. Under rather weak assumptions on $L$ as stated above, we prove that our new spaces satisfy important features such as continuous characterizations in terms of square functions, atomic decompositions and the identifications with some well-known function spaces such as Hardy-type spaces and Sobolev-type spaces. One of the highlights of our result is the characterization of these spaces via noncompactly supported functional calculus. An important by-product of this characterization is the characterization via the heat kernel for the full range of indices. Moreover, with extra assumptions on the operator $L$, we prove that the new function spaces associated with $L$ coincide with the classical function spaces. Finally we apply our results to prove the boundedness of the fractional power of $L$, the spectral multiplier of $L$ in our new function spaces and the dispersive estimates of wave equations.

For a finite alphabet ${\mathcal{A}}$ and shift $X\subseteq {\mathcal{A}}^{\mathbb{Z}}$ whose factor complexity function grows at most linearly, we study the algebraic properties of the automorphism group $\text{Aut}(X)$. For such systems, we show that every finitely generated subgroup of $\text{Aut}(X)$ is virtually $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$, in contrast to the behavior when the complexity function grows more quickly. With additional dynamical assumptions we show more: if $X$ is transitive, then $\text{Aut}(X)$ is virtually $\mathbb{Z}$; if $X$ has dense aperiodic points, then $\text{Aut}(X)$ is virtually $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$. We also classify all finite groups that arise as the automorphism group of a shift.

We prove the quasiinvariance of Gaussian measures (supported by functions of increasing Sobolev regularity) under the flow of one-dimensional Hamiltonian partial differential equations such as the regularized long wave, also known as the Benjamin–Bona–Mahony (BBM) equation.
