We show that for any n divisible by 3, almost all order-n Steiner triple systems admit a decomposition of almost all their triples into disjoint perfect matchings (that is, almost all Steiner triple systems are almost resolvable).

Let $S$ be a surface, $G$ a simply connected classical group, and $G^{\prime }$ the associated adjoint form of the group. We show that the moduli spaces of framed local systems ${\mathcal{X}}_{G^{\prime },S}$ and ${\mathcal{A}}_{G,S}$, which were constructed by Fock and Goncharov [‘Moduli spaces of local systems and higher Teichmuller theory’, Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci.103 (2006), 1–212], have the structure of cluster varieties, and thus together form a cluster ensemble. This simplifies some of the proofs in that paper, and also allows one to quantize higher Teichmuller space, which was previously only possible when $G$ was of type $A$.

We prove a lower bound on the entropy of sphere packings of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ of density $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E9}(d\cdot 2^{-d})$. The entropy measures how plentiful such packings are, and our result is significantly stronger than the trivial lower bound that can be obtained from the mere existence of a dense packing. Our method also provides a new, statistical-physics-based proof of the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}(d\cdot 2^{-d})$ lower bound on the maximum sphere packing density by showing that the expected packing density of a random configuration from the hard sphere model is at least $(1+o_{d}(1))\log (2/\sqrt{3})d\cdot 2^{-d}$ when the ratio of the fugacity parameter to the volume covered by a single sphere is at least $3^{-d/2}$. Such a bound on the sphere packing density was first achieved by Rogers, with subsequent improvements to the leading constant by Davenport and Rogers, Ball, Vance, and Venkatesh.

We present a procedure for constructing families of local, massive and interacting Haag–Kastler nets on the two-dimensional spacetime through an operator-algebraic method. A proof of existence of local observables is given without relying on modular nuclearity. By a similar technique, another family of wedge-local nets is constructed using certain endomorphisms of conformal nets recently studied by Longo and Witten.

We construct global-in-time singular dynamics for the (renormalized) cubic fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the circle, having the white noise measure as an invariant measure. For this purpose, we introduce the ‘random-resonant / nonlinear decomposition’, which allows us to single out the singular component of the solution. Unlike the classical McKean, Bourgain, Da Prato-Debussche type argument, this singular component is nonlinear, consisting of arbitrarily high powers of the random initial data. We also employ a random gauge transform, leading to random Fourier restriction norm spaces. For this problem, a contraction argument does not work, and we instead establish the convergence of smooth approximating solutions by studying the partially iterated Duhamel formulation under the random gauge transform. We reduce the crucial nonlinear estimates to boundedness properties of certain random multilinear functionals of the white noise.

Twisted commutative algebras (tca’s) have played an important role in the nascent field of representation stability. Let $A_{d}$ be the tca freely generated by $d$ indeterminates of degree 1. In a previous paper, we determined the structure of the category of $A_{1}$-modules (which is equivalent to the category of $\mathbf{FI}$-modules). In this paper, we establish analogous results for the category of $A_{d}$-modules, for any $d$. Modules over $A_{d}$ are closely related to the structures used by the authors in previous works studying syzygies of Segre and Veronese embeddings, and we hope the results of this paper will eventually lead to improvements on those works. Our results also have implications in asymptotic commutative algebra.

We define an invariant of contact 3-manifolds with convex boundary using Kronheimer and Mrowka’s sutured monopole Floer homology theory ( $SHM$ ). Our invariant can be viewed as a generalization of Kronheimer and Mrowka’s contact invariant for closed contact 3-manifolds and as the monopole Floer analogue of Honda, Kazez, and Matić’s contact invariant in sutured Heegaard Floer homology ( $SFH$ ). In the process of defining our invariant, we construct maps on $SHM$ associated to contact handle attachments, analogous to those defined by Honda, Kazez, and Matić in $SFH$ . We use these maps to establish a bypass exact triangle in $SHM$ analogous to Honda’s in $SFH$ . This paper also provides the topological basis for the construction of similar gluing maps in sutured instanton Floer homology, which are used in Baldwin and Sivek [Selecta Math. (N.S.), 22(2) (2016), 939–978] to define a contact invariant in the instanton Floer setting.

We use the structure lattice, introduced in Part I, to undertake a systematic study of the class $\mathscr{S}$ consisting of compactly generated, topologically simple, totally disconnected locally compact groups that are nondiscrete. Given $G\in \mathscr{S}$, we show that compact open subgroups of $G$ involve finitely many isomorphism types of composition factors, and do not have any soluble normal subgroup other than the trivial one. By results of Part I, this implies that the centralizer lattice and local decomposition lattice of $G$ are Boolean algebras. We show that the $G$-action on the Stone space of those Boolean algebras is minimal, strongly proximal, and microsupported. Building upon those results, we obtain partial answers to the following key problems: Are all groups in $\mathscr{S}$ abstractly simple? Can a group in $\mathscr{S}$ be amenable? Can a group in $\mathscr{S}$ be such that the contraction groups of all of its elements are trivial?

Let $\text{H}$ be a subgroup of some locally compact group $\text{G}$. Assume that $\text{H}$ is approximable by discrete subgroups and that $\text{G}$ admits neighborhood bases which are almost invariant under conjugation by finite subsets of $\text{H}$. Let $m:\text{G}\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ be a bounded continuous symbol giving rise to an $L_{p}$-bounded Fourier multiplier (not necessarily completely bounded) on the group von Neumann algebra of $\text{G}$ for some $1\leqslant p\leqslant \infty$. Then, $m_{\mid _{\text{H}}}$ yields an $L_{p}$-bounded Fourier multiplier on the group von Neumann algebra of $\text{H}$ provided that the modular function ${\rm\Delta}_{\text{G}}$ is equal to 1 over $\text{H}$. This is a noncommutative form of de Leeuw’s restriction theorem for a large class of pairs $(\text{G},\text{H})$. Our assumptions on $\text{H}$ are quite natural, and they recover the classical result. The main difference with de Leeuw’s original proof is that we replace dilations of Gaussians by other approximations of the identity for which certain new estimates on almost-multiplicative maps are crucial. Compactification via lattice approximation and periodization theorems are also investigated.

Arithmetic duality theorems over a local field $k$ are delicate to prove if $\text{char}\,k>0$. In this case, the proofs often exploit topologies carried by the cohomology groups $H^{n}(k,G)$ for commutative finite type $k$-group schemes $G$. These ‘Čech topologies’, defined using Čech cohomology, are impractical due to the lack of proofs of their basic properties, such as continuity of connecting maps in long exact sequences. We propose another way to topologize $H^{n}(k,G)$: in the key case when $n=1$, identify $H^{1}(k,G)$ with the set of isomorphism classes of objects of the groupoid of $k$-points of the classifying stack $\mathbf{B}G$ and invoke Moret-Bailly’s general method of topologizing $k$-points of locally of finite type $k$-algebraic stacks. Geometric arguments prove that these ‘classifying stack topologies’ enjoy the properties expected from the Čech topologies. With this as the key input, we prove that the Čech and the classifying stack topologies actually agree. The expected properties of the Čech topologies follow, and these properties streamline a number of arithmetic duality proofs given elsewhere.

We construct algebras of endomorphisms in the derived category of the cohomology of arithmetic manifolds, which are generated by Hecke operators. We construct Galois representations with coefficients in these Hecke algebras and apply this technique to sharpen recent results of P. Scholze.

When $p>2$, we construct a Hodge-type analogue of Rapoport–Zink spaces under the unramifiedness assumption, as formal schemes parametrizing ‘deformations’ (up to quasi-isogeny) of $p$-divisible groups with certain crystalline Tate tensors. We also define natural rigid analytic towers with expected extra structure, providing more examples of ‘local Shimura varieties’ conjectured by Rapoport and Viehmann.

We prove that there is a positive proportion of L-functions associated to cubic characters over $\mathbb F_q[T]$ that do not vanish at the critical point $s=1/2$. This is achieved by computing the first mollified moment using techniques previously developed by the authors in their work on the first moment of cubic L-functions, and by obtaining a sharp upper bound for the second mollified moment, building on work of Lester and Radziwiłł, which in turn develops further ideas from the work of Soundararajan, Harper and Radziwiłł. We work in the non-Kummer setting when $q\equiv 2 \,(\mathrm {mod}\,3)$, but our results could be translated into the Kummer setting when $q\equiv 1\,(\mathrm {mod}\,3)$ as well as into the number-field case (assuming the generalised Riemann hypothesis). Our positive proportion of nonvanishing is explicit, but extremely small, due to the fact that the implied constant in the upper bound for the mollified second moment is very large.

Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian local ring. As an analog of the notion of the dimension of a triangulated category defined by Rouquier, the notion of the dimension of a subcategory of finitely generated $R$-modules is introduced in this paper. We found evidence that certain categories over nice singularities have small dimensions. When $R$ is Cohen–Macaulay, under a mild assumption it is proved that finiteness of the dimension of the full subcategory consisting of maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules which are locally free on the punctured spectrum is equivalent to saying that $R$ is an isolated singularity. As an application, the celebrated theorem of Auslander, Huneke, Leuschke, and Wiegand is not only recovered but also improved. The dimensions of stable categories of maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules as triangulated categories are also investigated in the case where $R$ is Gorenstein, and special cases of the recent results of Aihara and Takahashi, and Oppermann and Št́ovíček are recovered and improved. Our key technique involves a careful study of annihilators and supports of $\mathsf{Tor}$, $\mathsf{Ext}$, and $\underline{\mathsf{Hom}}$ between two subcategories.

The Torelli group of $W_g = \#^g S^n \times S^n$ is the group of diffeomorphisms of $W_g$ fixing a disc that act trivially on $H_n(W_g;\mathbb{Z} )$ . The rational cohomology groups of the Torelli group are representations of an arithmetic subgroup of $\text{Sp}_{2g}(\mathbb{Z} )$ or $\text{O}_{g,g}(\mathbb{Z} )$ . In this article we prove that for $2n \geq 6$ and $g \geq 2$ , they are in fact algebraic representations. Combined with previous work, this determines the rational cohomology of the Torelli group in a stable range. We further prove that the classifying space of the Torelli group is nilpotent.

The signature of a parametric curve is a sequence of tensors whose entries are iterated integrals. This construction is central to the theory of rough paths in stochastic analysis. It is examined here through the lens of algebraic geometry. We introduce varieties of signature tensors for both deterministic paths and random paths. For the former, we focus on piecewise linear paths, on polynomial paths, and on varieties derived from free nilpotent Lie groups. For the latter, we focus on Brownian motion and its mixtures.

A bipartite graph $H = \left (V_1, V_2; E \right )$ with $\lvert V_1\rvert + \lvert V_2\rvert = n$ is semilinear if $V_i \subseteq \mathbb {R}^{d_i}$ for some $d_i$ and the edge relation E consists of the pairs of points $(x_1, x_2) \in V_1 \times V_2$ satisfying a fixed Boolean combination of s linear equalities and inequalities in $d_1 + d_2$ variables for some s. We show that for a fixed k, the number of edges in a $K_{k,k}$ -free semilinear H is almost linear in n, namely $\lvert E\rvert = O_{s,k,\varepsilon }\left (n^{1+\varepsilon }\right )$ for any $\varepsilon> 0$ ; and more generally, $\lvert E\rvert = O_{s,k,r,\varepsilon }\left (n^{r-1 + \varepsilon }\right )$ for a $K_{k, \dotsc ,k}$ -free semilinear r-partite r-uniform hypergraph.

As an application, we obtain the following incidence bound: given $n_1$ points and $n_2$ open boxes with axis-parallel sides in $\mathbb {R}^d$ such that their incidence graph is $K_{k,k}$ -free, there can be at most $O_{k,\varepsilon }\left (n^{1+\varepsilon }\right )$ incidences. The same bound holds if instead of boxes, one takes polytopes cut out by the translates of an arbitrary fixed finite set of half-spaces.

We also obtain matching upper and (superlinear) lower bounds in the case of dyadic boxes on the plane, and point out some connections to the model-theoretic trichotomy in o-minimal structures (showing that the failure of an almost-linear bound for some definable graph allows one to recover the field operations from that graph in a definable manner).

We use tropical curves and toric degeneration techniques to construct closed embedded Lagrangian rational homology spheres in a lot of Calabi-Yau threefolds. The homology spheres are mirror dual to the holomorphic curves contributing to the Gromov-Witten (GW) invariants. In view of Joyce’s conjecture, these Lagrangians are expected to have special Lagrangian representatives and hence solve a special Lagrangian enumerative problem in Calabi-Yau threefolds.

We apply this construction to the tropical curves obtained from the 2,875 lines on the quintic Calabi-Yau threefold. Each admissible tropical curve gives a Lagrangian rational homology sphere in the corresponding mirror quintic threefold and the Joyce’s weight of each of these Lagrangians equals the multiplicity of the corresponding tropical curve.

As applications, we show that disjoint curves give pairwise homologous but non-Hamiltonian isotopic Lagrangians and we check in an example that $>300$ mutually disjoint curves (and hence Lagrangians) arise. Dehn twists along these Lagrangians generate an abelian subgroup of the symplectic mapping class group with that rank.

We introduce a concept of minimality for Fano polygons. We show that, up to mutation, there are only finitely many Fano polygons with given singularity content, and give an algorithm to determine representatives for all mutation-equivalence classes of such polygons. This is a key step in a program to classify orbifold del Pezzo surfaces using mirror symmetry. As an application, we classify all Fano polygons such that the corresponding toric surface is qG-deformation-equivalent to either (i) a smooth surface; or (ii) a surface with only singularities of type $1/3(1,1)$.

Recent works at the interface of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory and topology have provided new integer-valued invariants on integer partitions. It is natural to consider the distribution of partitions when sorted by these invariants in congruence classes. We consider the prominent situations that arise from extensions of the Nekrasov–Okounkov hook product formula and from Betti numbers of various Hilbert schemes of n points on ${\mathbb {C}}^2$ . For the Hilbert schemes, we prove that homology is equidistributed as $n\to \infty $ . For t-hooks, we prove distributions that are often not equidistributed. The cases where $t\in \{2, 3\}$ stand out, as there are congruence classes where such counts are zero. To obtain these distributions, we obtain analytic results of independent interest. We determine the asymptotics, near roots of unity, of the ubiquitous infinite products
