Cet article se propose d'interroger la notion d'euphémisme dans deux versants qu'on lui a grossièrement reconnus sans vraiment les définir: d'un côté, on l'a associé à la politesse et à la prudence, et de l'autre à la volonté de tromper. À partir d'un corpus médiatique on tentera, dans un premier temps, de mettre en œuvre les mécanismes sémantico-énonciatifs qui sous-tendent cette hypothétique double euphémisation, compte tenu de la dépendance contextuelle du procédé. Ensuite sera analysé le rapport de l'euphémisme aux notions connexes de langue de bois et de politiquement correct. Puis on abordera le phénomène du non-compromis énonciatif, allié de l'euphémisme par l'omission de l'agent réalisant l'action, et de l'idéologie du dire de convenance. On soulèvera, pour terminer, la question de la variation stylistique selon laquelle les procédés substitutifs sembleraient parfois conçus dans le but d'éviter des répétitions plutôt qu'en raison d'un quelconque besoin d'adoucir les propos, et de la variation contextuelle qui convoque la même expression avec des valeurs opposées en fonction de son entourage linguistique.

The article examines the use of connectors in oral narratives of 27 adult American learners of French, who are classified in four groups according to length of instruction and type of learning environment, i.e. classroom or immersion or mixed. The patterns of acquisition are found to be in general quite similar to those of child LI French learners, including a routinised use of one or more markers which serve as pause fillers. Surprisingly, even very proficient learners show overgeneralisation of some connectors, in particular of transitional connectors (alors, donc) and discourse-structuring particles (eh bien, bon), whose functions are relatively opaque.

This article addresses the contention that the regional accents of northern France have become increasingly uniform (‘levelled’) in recent decades. A qualitative, micro-level analysis is carried out on the speech of two older working-class male informants, one from each of the cities of Nancy and Rennes. To contextualise the data, which are drawn from sociolinguistic interviews, previous accounts of the relevant français régionaux are summarised. Close examination of non-standard features in the present data shows that whereas the Nancy informant displays several localised traits, the Rennes speaker's accent is more typical of general colloquial and lower-class usage. While regionally marked variants are disappearing, the degree of accent levelling varies according to region, and thus according to substrate dialect.

Comment s'effectue la surcomposition d'un verbe français? Réponse: non pas en composant l'auxiliaire, ainsi qu'on l'affirme généralement, mais en composant l'auxilié. Combien existe-t-il alors de formes surcomposées avec avoir ou être? Réponse: autant que de formes composées moins une, soit neuf. La plus courante de ces formes est le passé surcomposé. Défini en termes de temps: présent bisantérieur, et en termes d'aspect: sécant bisextensif, il est schématisable sur la ligne du temps par le tracé ABCD (où A désigne le repère de l'actualité, B l'auxiliaire de surcomposition, C l'auxiliaire de composition, D l'auxilié). Ses emplois se ventilent en quatre types selon que la relation bijective D↔C↔B est saisie en D, en C (saisie par l'arrière de la relation D↔C et saisie par l'avant de la relation C↔B) ou en B.

L'article passe en revue les régularités décelables dans un corpus d'environ 800 adjectifs formés par suffixation de -esque. On y suggère qu'il est plausible que ces régularités découlent de quelques contraintes de surface partiellement contradictoires, les processus qui visent à éviter les configurations dysphoniques (hiatus, répétitions) pouvant être bloqués par la nécessité de conserver à la base une certaine taille. Le corpus utilisé se montre en fin de compte insuffisant pour résoudre toutes les difficultés rencontrées, mais on doute que la seule intuition d'un locuteur isolé eût permis d'atteindre les résultats qui se dégagent de la présente étude.

Based on two syntactically annotated corpora, and within the theoretical tradition of dependency grammar, the current study investigates the quantitative differences and similarities between written and spoken French. Our findings support the assumption that spoken and written French are two realizations of one language that do not differ in the syntactic categories, but in the frequency of these categories, and also in their organization in sentence. The subjects in spoken French are mostly pronouns, whereas in written French the subjects are mostly nouns and pronouns. Spoken and written French share many syntactic relations, but with different frequencies. For instance, dislocations are more diverse and frequent in spoken French. Spoken French and written French differ in the word order of vocative nominal phrases. Finally, written French is slightly more difficult to process than spoken French.

La phonologie du français présente un phénomène bien connu de sandhi externe à la jointure de mot appelé liaison : devant une unité lexicale à initiale vocalique, un mot se terminant apparemment par une voyelle s'enchaîne syllabiquement en prenant appui sur une consonne: un petit / café [ pət i k a f e] vs un petit enfant [ pət i tãfã]. Cette consonne de liaison (CL), ici le /t/, qui n'apparaît que lorsque le mot de droite commence par voyelle, a été analysée comme latente, épenthétique ou supplétive, appartenant au mot de gauche (mot 1, M1 ci-après), de droite (mot 2, M2 ci-après) ou à aucun selon les auteurs, nous y reviendrons.

Notre objectif est de décrire l'évolution de la locution adverbiale quelque part de son emploi spatial standard à des emplois non spatiaux en vogue à l'heure actuelle, mais non encore analysés, comme ceux qu'exemplifient les séquences:

Moi, ça m'embête quelque part de dire à un enfant euh non tu parles pas comme ça. Quelque part, il y a eu un abandon de la structure éducative (propos d'un député UMP sur le rôle des parents et de l'école dans la prévention de la fugue et de l'école buissonnière)

Je sais que Brian n'est pas mon enfant, mais quelque part il l'est aussi (propos d'une mère dont la fille de 15 ans a eu un enfant et que la mère aide à élever, 27/01/03, émission TV)

Dans une première partie, nous analyserons le ‘sens’ spatial en mettant plus particulièrement en relief les deux propriétés qui le caractérisent, notamment le trait de ‘partition’ généralement omis dans les descriptions. Après avoir distingué les emplois non spatiaux des emplois spatiaux, nous essaierons dans notre deuxième partie:

1. de faire ressortir deux types d'emplois non spatiaux,

2. d'expliquer ces emplois, dans une perspective de grammaticalisation, à partir des deux traits sémantiques postulés pour les emplois spatiaux,

3. de décrire les effets de sens auxquels ils donnent lieu et qui expliquent en partie leur succès.

Using Wierzbicka's natural semantic metalanguage, this paper sets out to show the pragmatic differences between ‘health enquiries’ and ‘weekend routines’ in French and (Australian) English. In French, except in rare cases, ‘health enquiries’ and ‘weekend routines’ must be introduced by means of a greeting of some sort. In (Australian) English, they may take the place of conventional greeting behaviour. Phaticity in the case of the English phrases is considerably higher than in the case of the French phrases, which, in the context of an intercultural encounter, may result in pragmalinguistic and/or sociopragmatic failure.

Two UG approaches to L2A propose different views of parameter resetting, depending on the capacity of interlanguage grammars to gain new values for uninterpretable functional features. Representational Deficit/Interpretability (e.g. Hawkins, 2003) maintains that parameter settings are limited to L1 values, whereas Full Access (e.g. Prévost & White, 2000) claims L2 parameter values may be gained; both assume initial transfer of L1 morphosyntactic settings. We examine verb morphosyntax of three advanced anglophone learners of L2 French, beginning with a description of the theoretical issues. We next report the study: the subjects, data collection and results. The final section discusses the data in terms of the two approaches, concluding that the results generally support FA over RD/I.

Cette étude propose d’explorer et d’identifier des moments particuliers où le changement linguistique se produit, afin de confirmer ou de rejeter l’idée d’une période spécifique désignée par le terme « français préclassique », avec une rupture – ou frontière chronolectale – détectable autour de 1630 (cf. Ayres-Bennett et Caron, 2016). Afin de vérifier dans quelle mesure cette chronologie peut être confirmée, il est nécessaire de multiplier des analyses fines et pointues sur des traits linguistiques qui ont subi des changements à l’époque en question et d’interroger une gamme de textes qui reflètent la variation discursive et pragmatique, au lieu de consulter le canon des traditions textuelles actuellement disponibles sur des bases numérisées, qui sont essentiellement littéraires. C’est pourquoi nous avons consulté des sources de nature différente, qui pourraient attester des usages émergents, à savoir les corpus du Réseau Corpus Français Préclassique et Classique (RCFC). Seront présentés les résultats de deux études de cas (la recatégorisation des formes dedans/dessous/dessus/dehors et la montée des clitiques), abondamment discutés par les remarqueurs.

Le but principal de cette contribution est de revisiter la notion de contexte à la lumière de travaux portant sur la mise en place de la référence personnelle chez des enfants francophones monolingues d'âge préscolaire et scolaire au cours d'une production narrative.

Les résultats montrent que les enfants apprennent progressivement à gérer 3 types de contraintes de manière simultanée: les contraintes communicatives afin de réaliser une interaction dans des conditions optimales, les contraintes textuelles dans le but de construire un texte multipropositionnel d'un genre particulier, et enfin, les contraintes linguistiques, à savoir respecter les caractéristiques structurelles et fonctionnelles de la langue utilisée.

In this paper I present an analysis of the discourse connective puis, as it is used in (relatively) informal spoken French. I argue that this item has been (and possibly still is) subject to a process of grammaticalization, whereby its basic function has changed from that of a time adjunct to that of an additive conjunct taking discourse acts in its scope, with the further possibility that it may be moving towards becoming a true conjunction. I moreover hypothesize that the meaning of conversational puis may be represented as a set of instructions, directing the hearer to search for two and only two elements to be connected, and to understand these two elements to be of separate relevance to a common integrator.

Although frequent reference is made to l'on as an alternative to on in standard grammars, judgements vary as to whether or not l'on is used at all in spoken French. This question is investigated here by treating l'on ∼ on as a sociolinguistic variable. A review of the historical, dialectal and cross-linguistic background is followed by an examination of the traditional ‘rules’ for the use of l'on, as described by Vaugelas and reconsidered by Goosse for written French. The frequency of l'on in speech, and the contexts in which it is used, are then examined in a corpus of informal interviews, and some comparisons are made with a corpus of TV news reports. (The total N of on + l'on in the two corpora is 3,549.) In general, l'on can be viewed as a ‘long form’, marking formality and comparable in some respect to l'un(e), cela, ce sont and nous -ons. But there are some individuals who use l'on even when speaking informally, especially in relative clauses opening with que.

This article describes the development of temporal reference and clause-combining in the acquisition of French L2 by adult Moroccan Arabic L1 speakers. The contribution of iconicity and of transfer from L1 in this development is discussed. The path towards grammaticalisation is less clearly marked in the domain of clause combining than in the domain of temporal reference, where after use of lexical and pragmatic means, inflection on the verb develops. Grammaticalised subordination is rarely used, except for circumstancial clauses. Paratactic devices such as clefting and NP copy tend to be used for discursive functions such as the introduction of background information in narratives, for instance.

Cet article étudie l’évolution du lexème genre, depuis des emplois prépositionnels jusqu’aux emplois interphrastiques les plus récents. Les données étudiées proviennent de corpus oraux et de messages d’un forum internet. On montre qu’il y a bien une évolution dont on peut rendre compte en termes de conventionnalisation de valeurs contextuelles, mais dont il est difficile de reconstruire la chronologie, les valeurs existantes et les valeurs nouvelles se superposant et s’influençant mutuellement. Néanmoins, on peut repérer que les emplois les plus novateurs se trouvent massivement chez les locuteurs les plus jeunes, signalant une évolution récente.

This special issue of JFLS focuses on what learners know about French words, on how they use that knowledge and on how it can be investigated and assessed.

This paper examines the position of negative adverbs such as mie, pas, point and jamais in Middle and Classical French infinitival clauses. Instead of linking the movement of the infinitival verb to the strength of functional categories such as AGRℴ, I propose to link it to a parametric change of NEGP from strong to weak. Up to Classical French, the infinitival verb can move to AGRℴ because NEGP is strong; this movement of the infinitival verb to AGRℴ allows the movement of negative adverbs, which are base-generated in VP initial position. At the beginning of Classical French, a parametric change affected the strength of NEGP, from strong to weak. As a result of this parametric change, movement of the infinitival verb to AGRℴ becomes more limited. Moreover, the difference between pas and other negative adverbs is due to a change in the nature of pas, from an adverb base-generated in VP initial position which can move, to a fixed adverb base-generated in the specifier position of NEGP.

Our paper examines lexical variation in the spoken French of second language learners and focuses on words referring to the notion of ‘automobile’ (i.e., automobile, auto, voiture, char and machine). Results reveal that while students do follow the native speaker pattern of using the neutral variant auto in most instances, they diverge from native speakers by making no use of the vernacular form char and relatively high use of the prestige variant voiture. The principal external factors that influence variant choice are students' home language and the representation of variants in the input to which students are exposed.

Occitan and Catalan are in an increasing state of language obsolescence in France. Their phonologies both contain a voiced palatal lateral approximant /ʎ/, not present in modern French, that is being replaced in all positions by the palatal approximant [j]. It is not clear whether this is an effect of language contact with French because [j] commonly emerges as a variant of /ʎ/ in non-contact varieties of Romance. This article examines the distribution of /ʎ/ in Occitan and Catalan, using auditory and acoustic data from a wordlist-translation task conducted with 40 native speakers. The analysis aims to determine the nature of this sound change either as the result of transfer from French or as a regular sound change that is motivated by the phonetic similarity of [ʎ] and [j]. The mechanisms governing transfer from French are modelled statistically to account for the distribution of historically appropriate and contact-induced variants of /ʎ/, and acoustic analyses test the hypothesis that the change is internally motivated and occurring gradually. Results show that the factors conditioning the change may be different in each of these related languages in that it is contact-induced in Occitan, but potentially due to internal and external factors in Catalan.
