This article discusses a number of problematic issues relating to the methodology involved in investigating a rare syntactic form. Three key areas are explored, namely fieldwork technique, sampling methodology and data analysis. Although the starting-point is a particular survey of a rare French tense, the questions raised are of more general relevance. In the light of previous research, both theoretical and practical sides of the issues are discussed and debated.

The passé surcomposé régional is widely recognised as a feature of the régional French of the langue d'oc andfranco-provençal areas. It is also generally regarded as a highly stigmatised form in relation to the prescriptive norm. Less clear, however, is its précise function in the tense System of speakers who use it. In this paper, we investigate the temporal, aspectual and expressive properties of the régional double compound, taking into account semantic/pragmatic, sociolinguistic and syntactic factors. Our analysis suggests that in addition to the temporal and aspectual properties traditionally attributed to this form, the expressive properties of the surcomposé régional are central to any description of its function in contemporary spoken French, and fundamental to the opposition between the passé surcomposé and the passé composé.

Cette étude adopte une approche à la fois fonctionnaliste et usage-based de l'acquisition du langage pour rendre compte des formes non conventionnelles de référence à soi en position sujet chez une enfant francophone, Anaé, entre 1;05 et 3;00. D'une part, nos analyses quantitatives et qualitatives révèlent la présence, après 2 ans, d'un paradigme de verbes à valeur modale pour lesquels la référence à soi en position sujet peut être implicite. Pour ces verbes, comme pour tous les verbes avant 2 ans, un sujet grammatical est essentiellement produit dans des situations où l'enfant exprime un positionnement intersubjectif. D'autre part, la production de formes non conventionnelles met en évidence la création d'associations entre des formes et des contextes interactionnels spécifiques. L'analyse du langage adressé à l'enfant suggère que ces associations trouvent notamment leur origine dans le langage de la mère.

The paper proposes a unified account of the systematic polysemy of French future (FUT) that does not uniquely rely on Aktionsart. It explains the predominant preference for the temporal interpretation of FUT, appealing to the ‘future ratification hypothesis’. This is a felicity condition that can be satisfied to different degrees and among competing interpretations the one that satisfies it to the highest degree is preferred. The paper also shows that FUT does not convey uncertainty at utterance time (tu), and can be used when the attitude holder knows at tu that the embedded proposition is true.

Measures of second language (L2) learners’ vocabulary size have been shown to correlate with language proficiency in reading, writing and listening skills, and vocabulary tests are sometimes used for placement purposes. However, the relation between learners’ vocabulary knowledge and their speaking skills has been less thoroughly investigated, and even less so in terms of pronunciation. In this article, we compare vocabulary and pronunciation measures for 25 Italian instructed learners of L2 French. We measure their receptive (Dialang score) and productive (vocd-D, MTLD) vocabulary size, and calculate the following pronunciation indices: acoustic distance and overlap of realizations for selected L2 French vowel pairs, ratings of nasality for ratings of foreign-accentedness, fluency metrics. We find that vocabulary measures show low to medium correlations with fluency metrics and ratings of foreign-accentedness, but not with vowel metrics. We then turn our attention to the impact of research methods on the study of vocabulary and pronunciation. More specifically, we discuss the possibility that these results are due to pitfalls in vocabulary and pronunciation indices, such as the failure of Dialang to take into account the effect of L1-L2 cognates, and the lack of measures for evaluating consonants, intonation and perception skills.

This study investigates the expression of past temporal reference in a highly conservative variety of Acadian French spoken in the Baie Sainte-Marie region of Nova Scotia, Canada. Variationist analysis of data from a sociolinguistic corpus for the village of Grosses Coques reveals a split between narrative and conversational discourse, with variation mainly between use of the passé simple and the imparfait in the former and between the passé composé and the imparfait in the latter. The passé simple remains in robust use in this variety and is constrained in a manner similar to that found in 17th-century representations of colloquial speech involving narration.

Prior to the late 1960s second language acquisition was thought to be a relatively uninteresting phenomenon; it involved transferring grammatical properties already activated in the first language (L 1) onto second language (L 2) vocabulary. Successful L 2 learners were those who could capitalise on the similarities between the L 1 and the L 2, and eradicate the differences; and successful language teaching involved training learners to overcome the L 1-L 2 differences. Today, perceptions of second language acquisition are more sophisticated and nuanced. Second language acquisition researchers are interested in questions bearing not only on the influence of the L 1, but also on the degree of systematicity in L 2 development, the role that L 1, but also on the degree of systematicity in L 2 development, the role that conscious knowledge plays, the sources of variability in second language speaker performance, the ultimate levels of success achieved by L 2 learners of different ages, and individual differences between learners. The purpose of this article is to present what the authors believe to be some of the key issues which characterise current second language acquisition research, and to consider those issues within the specific context of the acquisition of French as second language.

This study examines the occurrences of new lexical borrowings in a French newspaper corpus to determine whether the phenomenon of English lexical borrowings (Anglicisms) is different than the phenomenon of non-English borrowings. Based on a search for all occurrences of new lexical borrowings in a corpus, it is found that new Anglicisms outnumber all other new borrowings combined. When cross-checking these results against the online archives of another French newspaper, it is found that the Anglicisms are more productive than borrowings with similar frequencies from other languages. Additionally, qualitative findings show that new Anglicisms are more likely than other borrowings to be integrated into the French lexicon. In French, Anglicisms are employed for different reasons than lexical borrowings from other languages.

Pour Hobbs (1979), l'interprétation des anaphoriques inter-phrastiques ‘découle’ (‘falls out’) en tant qu'effet secondaire de l'emploi d'une relation de cohérence pour intégrer deux unités de discours. En essayant de mettre au clair la nature des interactions entre relations de cohérence et fonctionnement des anaphores dans la compréhension de textes multi-propositionnels, l'article cherche à démontrer que l'hypothèse de Hobbs n'est valable qu'en partie.

D'abord, la référence complète des anaphoriques ne ‘découle’ pas seulement du choix de telle ou telle relation de cohérence pour intégrer deux unités de discours: elle est essentielle pour la mise en œuvre effective de cette relation. Ensuite, elle sert également à sélectionner l'unité de discours avec laquelle l'unité arrivante va s'intégrer, ainsi qu’à articuler le discours en une structure hiérarchique. Enfin l'intégration des unités de discours n'a pas lieu d'un seul coup, mais peut être étalée sur au moins trois étapes distinctes.

This study presents data from an elicitation study on French size and color adjectives in noun phrases (DPs), both early acquired structures. Thirty-two francophone children aged 3–5 years participated in the study. Adjectives were elicited using specially designed puzzles and spontaneous speech corpora. We observed that errors in French variable adjectives are produced in the early acquisition stages, especially in the context of feminine colour DPs. We propose that the source of difficulty for feminine variable adjectives is the retrieval of a lexicalized form that competes with the masculine adjective denoting the same concept.

Like France’s other regional languages, Breton has seen a steep decline, followed by a period of revitalization in recent decades. Today there are two largely separate communities of speakers: older, traditional speakers who grew up speaking Breton at home, and younger speakers, generally from French-speaking homes, most of whom have learnt Breton through immersion schooling. It is claimed that this ‘Neo-Breton’ differs from the language of older speakers, lexically, phonologically and grammatically. This article examines morphosyntactic (impersonal) and morphophonological (mutation) data to explore exactly how Neo-Breton differs from that of traditional speakers, and how the variability in the data might be explained. The data show that contrary to what might be expected, new speakers do not differ greatly from older, traditional speakers in these areas. Influence from French is more subtle than might be supposed. Children and teenagers who attend Breton-medium schooling seem to show an extended period of acquisition, but the data from adult new speakers suggests that with enough Breton input, these young speakers can reach full proficiency. However, as the number of older speakers decreases, Breton seems likely to see more widespread language change.

L'article vise à démontrer que l'emploi des démonstratifs marqués pour la distinction déictique ‘proximal’ vs. ‘distal’ en français et en anglais (ainsi que dans bien d'autres langues encore) ne se laisse pas analyser de manière satisfaisante en fonction du degré de proximité ou de distance du référent visé par rapport au locuteur (ou à l'allocutaire) dans la situation de communication, selon la conception classique. Une analyse plus satisfaisante devrait prendre en compte le projet communicatif du locuteur: implication personnelle forte du locuteur dans le cas du membre proximal de l'opposition, et dissociation subjective ou alignement avec l'allocutaire dans celui du membre distal (non marqué).

The spoken language has traditionally been regarded as being a degenerate version of the written language, marred by backtrackings and repetitions. This paper explores the role of the pragmatic particle enfin when it is used as a corrective, both to introduce a repair and, in its mitigating or hedging capacity, as a mediator of social relations. An attempt is made to account for the pragmatico-syntactic characteristics of a particular manifestation of corrective enfin – the echo/self-mimic corrective. The behaviour of enfin is arguably a microcosm in a much larger universe of rules governing the way speakers produce and hearers interpret the shifting signals of participatory discourse.

Dans les dictionnaires usuels du français le mot ‘boîte’ est défini à partir d'une valeur de base correspondant à un prototype matéeriel (ou perceptu). Les très nombreux composées (introduits de manière alternante par les prépositions A ou de) qui ne se conferment pas à ce prototype (par exemple, ‘boîte aux lettres’, ‘boîte d';essieu’, ‘boîte de nuit’) sont décrits sous les rubriques ‘fourre-tout’ de ‘spécialité’, ‘analogie’, parfois aussi ‘métaphore’. A ce mode de présentation, une approche non dictionnairique, mais de sémantique lexicale, suggère d'opposer le principe d'un stéréotype ‘intensionnel’ (ou concept) formulé en termes exclusivement fonctionnels (contenir X. et produire/fournir Y.). Mettant a priori les (quasi-) innombrables usages du mot sur un pied d'égalité, cette description permet de rendre justice à cette variété et à cette productivité grâce à une mécanique flexible d'ajustement entre l'instruction stéréotypique générique et les contraintes matérielles spécifiques.

This article describes a large-coverage formalisation of a French determiner system that includes simple words such as “le” (the), compounds such as “la plupart des” (most of), and more complex sequences such as “toute une partie de ce groupe de” (a whole part of this group of). The grammar is available in the form of a library of 150 Finite-State graphs and is compiled into a Minimal Deterministic Finite-State Transducer of over 5,000 states and 113,000 transitions.

La dénomination est une propriété fondamentale et définitoire du lexique. La conceptualisation qui en est proposée actuellement est marquée par un héritage logicien: distinction tautologique entre nom syntaxique et nom sémantique; localisation de la propriété sur les seules unités classifiantes. Nous proposons d'adopter une perspective qui, fondée sur la stabilité et la récurrence de la relation référentielle, découple la dénomination de sa dimension syntaxique (de fait les verbes et les adjectifs seront tenus eux aussi pour des dénominations) et prend en compte la valeur axiologique des items lexicaux. Dans une telle configuration, qui rend compte de la diversité du lexique, catégories référentielles et catégories syntaxiques ne se superposent pas et l'on postule l'existance de chemins dénominatifs par lesquels est assurée la référence virtuelle.

Les indéfinis quelques et plusieurs se distinguent par un mode de sommation très différent. Quelques N ne dénote pas une véritable pluralité d’éléments mais une entité collective. On observe un phénomène identique avec les juxtapositions de numéraux, les disjonctions de numéraux et certains numéraux simples.

Dans un premier temps, nous explorons un premier type d'explication fondé sur les concepts de quantification vague et d'approximation. Nous concluons que ces concepts ne sont pas satisfaisants.

Nous présentons alors une alternative fondée sur la transposition, dans le domaine sémantique, d'une notion centrale de la Gestalttheorie: l'opposition entre constituant et élément.

Le verbe aller s'utilise comme verbe de manière de déplacement (aller vite) ou verbe de déplacement suivi d'un syntagme prépositionnel de lieu (aller devant l'église) ou d'un infinitif (aller manger). Dans le premier cas, la préposition introduit le terme anticipé du mouvement (règle R1); dans le second, l'infinitif désigne une action anticipée (règle R2). Yvan va manger est ambigu et peut également introduire un futur proche qui sera justifié par une extension de la règle R2. L'originalité du verbe aller est d'obliger l'interlocuteur à se détacher du contexte d'énonciation, même s'il est énoncé au moment de l'action. D'autres termes comme hier ont cette propriété mais, en ce cas, toute la proposition est transférée au passé. Au contraire, le verbe aller établit un lien entre le contexte d'énonciation immédiat et son au-delà. Il constitue ainsi une charnière importante entre un langage primitif tributaire de la référence et un langage capable de créer des contextes discursifs fondés sur l'imagination. Une règle unique R définit le verbe aller par son rôle dans l'évolution du langage. Elle constitue une alternative aux règles R1 et R2 qui rendent mieux compte de la connaissance consciente que le locuteur a du verbe aller

Nous décrivons dans cet article l’évolution des formes adverbiales ailleurs, d'ailleurs et par ailleurs de l'ancien français au français moderne. A l'aide d'une étude sur un large corpus diachronique, portant sur des occurrences tirées des bases de données BFM, DMF et Frantext, et combinant une approche qualitative et une approche quantitative, nous montrons l’évolution sémantique de l'adverbe ailleurs du concret à l'abstrait, et l’émergence successive de deux locutions adverbiales, d'ailleurs en français classique et par ailleurs en français moderne. Plus précisément, nous montrons que d'ailleurs puis par ailleurs, une fois lexicalisés, se grammaticalisent en marqueurs de discours, signalant un changement de topique de discours, avec des emplois proches mais distincts.

This article addresses the contention that the regional accents of northern France have become increasingly uniform (‘levelled’) in recent decades. A qualitative, micro-level analysis is carried out on the speech of two older working-class male informants, one from each of the cities of Nancy and Rennes. To contextualise the data, which are drawn from sociolinguistic interviews, previous accounts of the relevant français régionaux are summarised. Close examination of non-standard features in the present data shows that whereas the Nancy informant displays several localised traits, the Rennes speaker's accent is more typical of general colloquial and lower-class usage. While regionally marked variants are disappearing, the degree of accent levelling varies according to region, and thus according to substrate dialect.
