We prove that any element in a sufficiently large transitive finite simple permutation group is a product of two derangements.

In the article [CEGS20b], we introduced various moduli stacks of two-dimensional tamely potentially Barsotti–Tate representations of the absolute Galois group of a p-adic local field, as well as related moduli stacks of Breuil–Kisin modules with descent data. We study the irreducible components of these stacks, establishing, in particular, that the components of the former are naturally indexed by certain Serre weights.

The existence of Ulrich modules for (complete) local domains has been a difficult and elusive open question. For over thirty years, it was unknown whether complete local domains always have Ulrich modules. In this paper, we answer the question of existence for both Ulrich modules and weakly lim Ulrich sequences – a weaker notion recently introduced by Ma – in the negative. We construct many local domains in all dimensions $d \geq 2$ that do not have any Ulrich modules. Moreover, we show that when $d = 2$, these local domains do not have weakly lim Ulrich sequences.

We revisit Haiman’s conjecture on the relations between characters of Kazdhan–Lusztig basis elements of the Hecke algebra over $S_n$. The conjecture asserts that, for purposes of character evaluation, any Kazhdan–Lusztig basis element is reducible to a sum of the simplest possible ones (those associated to so-called codominant permutations). When the basis element is associated to a smooth permutation, we are able to give a geometric proof of this conjecture. On the other hand, if the permutation is singular, we provide a counterexample.

In [4], Brown proved that the I-function of a toric fibration lies on the overruled Lagrangian cone of its $g=0$ Gromov–Witten theory, introduced by Coates and Givental [8]. In this paper, we prove the theorem for partial flag-variety fibrations. To do so, we construct new moduli spaces generalising the idea of Ciocan-Fontanine, Kim and Maulik [7].

We introduce a contact invariant in the bordered sutured Heegaard Floer homology of a three-manifold with boundary. The input for the invariant is a contact manifold $(M, \xi , \mathcal {F})$ whose convex boundary is equipped with a signed singular foliation $\mathcal {F}$ closely related to the characteristic foliation. Such a manifold admits a family of foliated open book decompositions classified by a Giroux correspondence, as described in [LV20]. We use a special class of foliated open books to construct admissible bordered sutured Heegaard diagrams and identify well-defined classes $c_D$ and $c_A$ in the corresponding bordered sutured modules.

Foliated open books exhibit user-friendly gluing behavior, and we show that the pairing on invariants induced by gluing compatible foliated open books recovers the Heegaard Floer contact invariant for closed contact manifolds. We also consider a natural map associated to forgetting the foliation $\mathcal {F}$ in favor of the dividing set and show that it maps the bordered sutured invariant to the contact invariant of a sutured manifold defined by Honda–Kazez–Matić.

We modify an argument of Hablicsek and Scherr to show that if a collection of points in $\mathbb{C}^{d}$ spans many $r$ -rich lines, then many of these lines must lie in a common $(d-1)$ -flat. This is closely related to a previous result of Dvir and Gopi.

We consider momentum push-forwards of measures arising as quantum limits (semiclassical measures) of eigenfunctions of a point scatterer on the standard flat torus ${\mathbb T}^2 = {\mathbb R}^2/{\mathbb Z}^{2}$ . Given any probability measure arising by placing delta masses, with equal weights, on ${\mathbb Z}^2$ -lattice points on circles and projecting to the unit circle, we show that the mass of certain subsequences of eigenfunctions, in momentum space, completely localizes on that measure and are completely delocalized in position (i.e., concentration on Lagrangian states). We also show that the mass, in momentum, can fully localize on more exotic measures, for example, singular continuous ones with support on Cantor sets. Further, we can give examples of quantum limits that are certain convex combinations of such measures, in particular showing that the set of quantum limits is richer than the ones arising only from weak limits of lattice points on circles. The proofs exploit features of the half-dimensional sieve and behavior of multiplicative functions in short intervals, enabling precise control of the location of perturbed eigenvalues.

We state a sufficient condition for a fusion system to be saturated. This is then used to investigate localities with kernels: that is, localities that are (in a particular way) extensions of groups by localities. As an application of these results, we define and study certain products in fusion systems and localities, thus giving a new method to construct saturated subsystems of fusion systems.

The action on the trace space induced by a generic automorphism of a suitable finite classifiable ${\mathrm {C}^*}$ -algebra is shown to be chaotic and weakly mixing. Model ${\mathrm {C}^*}$ -algebras are constructed to observe the central limit theorem and other statistical features of strongly chaotic tracial actions. Genericity of finite Rokhlin dimension is used to describe $KK$ -contractible stably projectionless ${\mathrm {C}^*}$ -algebras as crossed products.

To any free group automorphism, we associate a real pretree with several nice properties. First, it has a rigid/non-nesting action of the free group with trivial arc stabilizers. Secondly, there is an expanding pretree-automorphism of the real pretree that represents the free group automorphism. Finally and crucially, the loxodromic elements are exactly those whose (conjugacy class) length grows exponentially under iteration of the automorphism; thus, the action on the real pretree is able to detect the growth type of an element.

This construction extends the theory of metric trees that has been used to study free group automorphisms. The new idea is that one can equivariantly blow up an isometric action on a real tree with respect to other real trees and get a rigid action on a treelike structure known as a real pretree. Topology plays no role in this construction as all the work is done in the language of pretrees (intervals).

We start by recalling the following theorem of Rohrlich [17]. Moreover, define $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}(z):=q\prod _{n\geqslant 1}(1-q^{n})^{24}$, where $q:=e^{2\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}iz}$, and set $\unicode[STIX]{x1D55B}(z):=\frac{1}{6}\log (y^{6}|\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}(z)|)+1$, where $z=x+iy$. Rohrlich’s theorem may be stated in terms of the Petersson inner product, denoted by $\langle ~,\,\rangle$.

Let q be a nontrivial odd prime power, and let $n \ge 2$ be a natural number with $(n,q) \ne (2,3)$ . We characterize the groups $PSL_n(q)$ and $PSU_n(q)$ by their $2$ -fusion systems. This contributes to a programme of Aschbacher aiming at a simplified proof of the classification of finite simple groups.

We prove that the alpha invariant of a quasi-smooth Fano 3-fold weighted hypersurface of index $1$ is greater than or equal to $1/2$. Combining this with the result of Stibitz and Zhuang [SZ19] on a relation between birational superrigidity and K-stability, we prove the K-stability of a birationally superrigid quasi-smooth Fano 3-fold weighted hypersurfaces of index $1$.

We show that relative Calabi–Yau structures on noncommutative moment maps give rise to (quasi-)bisymplectic structures, as introduced by Crawley-Boevey–Etingof–Ginzburg (in the additive case) and Van den Bergh (in the multiplicative case). We prove along the way that the fusion process (a) corresponds to the composition of Calabi–Yau cospans with ‘pair-of-pants’ ones and (b) preserves the duality between non-degenerate double quasi-Poisson structures and quasi-bisymplectic structures.

As an application, we obtain that Van den Bergh’s Poisson structures on the moduli spaces of representations of deformed multiplicative preprojective algebras coincide with the ones induced by the $2$-Calabi–Yau structures on (dg-versions of) these algebras.

We study the Hodge and weight filtrations on the localization along a hypersurface, using methods from birational geometry and the V-filtration induced by a local defining equation. These filtrations give rise to ideal sheaves called weighted Hodge ideals, which include the adjoint ideal and a multiplier ideal. We analyze their local and global properties, from which we deduce applications related to singularities of hypersurfaces of smooth varieties.

For a connected reductive group G over a finite field, we study automorphic vector bundles on the stack of G-zips. In particular, we give a formula in the general case for the space of global sections of an automorphic vector bundle in terms of the Brylinski-Kostant filtration. Moreover, we give an equivalence of categories between the category of automorphic vector bundles on the stack of G-zips and a category of admissible modules with actions of a 0-dimensional algebraic subgroup a Levi subgroup and monodromy operators.

We compute the integral Chow ring of the moduli stack of smooth elliptic curves with n marked points for $3\leq n\leq 10$.

The aim of this paper is to study supersoluble skew braces, a class of skew braces that encompasses all finite skew braces of square-free order. It turns out that finite supersoluble skew braces have Sylow towers and that in an arbitrary supersoluble skew brace B many relevant skew brace-theoretical properties are easier to identify: For example, a centrally nilpotent ideal of B is B-centrally nilpotent, a fact that simplifies the computational search for the Fitting ideal; also, B has finite multipermutational level if and only if $(B,+)$ is nilpotent.

Given a finite presentation of the structure skew brace $G(X,r)$ associated with a finite nondegenerate solution of the Yang–Baxter equation (YBE), there is an algorithm that decides if $G(X,r)$ is supersoluble or not. Moreover, supersoluble skew braces are examples of almost polycyclic skew braces, so they give rise to solutions of the YBE on which one can algorithmically work on.

We give an extension of Lê’s stochastic sewing lemma. The stochastic sewing lemma proves convergence in $L_m$ of Riemann type sums $\sum _{[s,t] \in \pi } A_{s,t}$ for an adapted two-parameter stochastic process A, under certain conditions on the moments of $A_{s,t}$ and of conditional expectations of $A_{s,t}$ given $\mathcal F_s$. Our extension replaces the conditional expectation given $\mathcal F_s$ by that given $\mathcal F_v$ for $v<s$, and it allows to make use of asymptotic decorrelation properties between $A_{s,t}$ and $\mathcal F_v$ by including a singularity in $(s-v)$. We provide three applications for which Lê’s stochastic sewing lemma seems to be insufficient. The first is to prove the convergence of Itô or Stratonovich approximations of stochastic integrals along fractional Brownian motions under low regularity assumptions. The second is to obtain new representations of local times of fractional Brownian motions via discretization. The third is to improve a regularity assumption on the diffusion coefficient of a stochastic differential equation driven by a fractional Brownian motion for pathwise uniqueness and strong existence.
