We prove that the sign of the Euler characteristic of arithmetic groups with the congruence subgroup property is determined by the profinite completion. In contrast, we construct examples showing that this is not true for the Euler characteristic itself and that the sign of the Euler characteristic is not profinite among general residually finite groups of type F. Our methods imply similar results for $\ell^2$ -torsion as well as a strong profiniteness statement for Novikov–Shubin invariants.

We identify the cohomology of the stable classifying space of homotopy automorphisms (relative to an embedded disk) of connected sums of ${\mathrm {S}^{k}} \times {\mathrm {S}^{l}}$, where $3 \le k < l \le 2k - 2$. The result is expressed in terms of Lie graph complex homology.

We propose a conjectural framework for computing Gorenstein measures and stringy Hodge numbers in terms of motivic integration over arcs of smooth Artin stacks, and we verify this framework in the case of fantastacks, which are certain toric Artin stacks that provide (nonseparated) resolutions of singularities for toric varieties. Specifically, let $\mathcal {X}$ be a smooth Artin stack admitting a good moduli space $\pi : \mathcal {X} \to X$ , and assume that X is a variety with log-terminal singularities, $\pi $ induces an isomorphism over a nonempty open subset of X and the exceptional locus of $\pi $ has codimension at least $2$ . We conjecture a change-of-variables formula relating the motivic measure for $\mathcal {X}$ to the Gorenstein measure for X and functions measuring the degree to which $\pi $ is nonseparated. We also conjecture that if the stabilisers of $\mathcal {X}$ are special groups in the sense of Serre, then almost all arcs of X lift to arcs of $\mathcal {X}$ , and we explain how in this case (assuming a finiteness hypothesis satisfied by fantastacks) our conjectures imply a formula for the stringy Hodge numbers of X in terms of a certain motivic integral over the arcs of $\mathcal {X}$ . We prove these conjectures in the case where $\mathcal {X}$ is a fantastack.

We prove several consistency results concerning the notion of $\omega $ -strongly measurable cardinal in $\operatorname {\mathrm {HOD}}$ . In particular, we show that is it consistent, relative to a large cardinal hypothesis weaker than $o(\kappa ) = \kappa $ , that every successor of a regular cardinal is $\omega $ -strongly measurable in $\operatorname {\mathrm {HOD}}$ .

In numerical linear algebra, a well-established practice is to choose a norm that exploits the structure of the problem at hand to optimise accuracy or computational complexity. In numerical polynomial algebra, a single norm (attributed to Weyl) dominates the literature. This article initiates the use of $L_p$ norms for numerical algebraic geometry, with an emphasis on $L_{\infty }$ . This classical idea yields strong improvements in the analysis of the number of steps performed by numerous iterative algorithms. In particular, we exhibit three algorithms where, despite the complexity of computing $L_{\infty }$ -norm, the use of $L_p$ -norms substantially reduces computational complexity: a subdivision-based algorithm in real algebraic geometry for computing the homology of semialgebraic sets, a well-known meshing algorithm in computational geometry and the computation of zeros of systems of complex quadratic polynomials (a particular case of Smale’s 17th problem).

We introduce a holomorphic torsion invariant of log-Enriques surfaces of index two with cyclic quotient singularities of type $\frac {1}{4}(1,1)$ . The moduli space of such log-Enriques surfaces with k singular points is a modular variety of orthogonal type associated with a unimodular lattice of signature $(2,10-k)$ . We prove that the invariant, viewed as a function of the modular variety, is given by the Petersson norm of an explicit Borcherds product. We note that this torsion invariant is essentially the BCOV invariant in the complex dimension $2$ . As a consequence, the BCOV invariant in this case is not a birational invariant, unlike the Calabi-Yau case.

We introduce a notion of complexity of diagrams (and, in particular, of objects and morphisms) in an arbitrary category, as well as a notion of complexity of functors between categories equipped with complexity functions. We discuss several examples of this new definition in categories of wide common interest such as finite sets, Boolean functions, topological spaces, vector spaces, semilinear and semialgebraic sets, graded algebras, affine and projective varieties and schemes, and modules over polynomial rings. We show that on one hand categorical complexity recovers in several settings classical notions of nonuniform computational complexity (such as circuit complexity), while on the other hand it has features that make it mathematically more natural. We also postulate that studying functor complexity is the categorical analog of classical questions in complexity theory about separating different complexity classes.

We explicitly determine the defining relations of all quantum symmetric pair coideal subalgebras of quantised enveloping algebras of Kac–Moody type. Our methods are based on star products on noncommutative ${\mathbb N}$-graded algebras. The resulting defining relations are expressed in terms of continuous q-Hermite polynomials and a new family of deformed Chebyshev polynomials.

We show that the integral canonical models of Hodge-type Shimura varieties at odd good reduction primes admits ‘$p$-adic uniformization’ by Rapoport–Zink spaces of Hodge type constructed in Kim [Forum Math. Sigma6 (2018) e8, 110 MR 3812116].

We prove that the rational cohomology group $H^{11}(\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n})$ vanishes unless $g = 1$ and $n \geq 11$. We show furthermore that $H^k(\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n})$ is pure Hodge–Tate for all even $k \leq 12$ and deduce that $\# \overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n}(\mathbb {F}_q)$ is surprisingly well approximated by a polynomial in q. In addition, we use $H^{11}(\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{1,11})$ and its image under Gysin push-forward for tautological maps to produce many new examples of moduli spaces of stable curves with nonvanishing odd cohomology and nontautological algebraic cycle classes in Chow cohomology.

We prove three results concerning the existence of Bohr sets in threefold sumsets. More precisely, letting G be a countable discrete abelian group and $\phi _1, \phi _2, \phi _3: G \to G$ be commuting endomorphisms whose images have finite indices, we show that

1. (1) If $A \subset G$ has positive upper Banach density and $\phi _1 + \phi _2 + \phi _3 = 0$ , then $\phi _1(A) + \phi _2(A) + \phi _3(A)$ contains a Bohr set. This generalizes a theorem of Bergelson and Ruzsa in $\mathbb {Z}$ and a recent result of the first author.

2. (2) For any partition $G = \bigcup _{i=1}^r A_i$ , there exists an $i \in \{1, \ldots , r\}$ such that $\phi _1(A_i) + \phi _2(A_i) - \phi _2(A_i)$ contains a Bohr set. This generalizes a result of the second and third authors from $\mathbb {Z}$ to countable abelian groups.

3. (3) If $B, C \subset G$ have positive upper Banach density and $G = \bigcup _{i=1}^r A_i$ is a partition, $B + C + A_i$ contains a Bohr set for some $i \in \{1, \ldots , r\}$ . This is a strengthening of a theorem of Bergelson, Furstenberg and Weiss.

All results are quantitative in the sense that the radius and rank of the Bohr set obtained depends only on the indices $[G:\phi _j(G)]$ , the upper Banach density of A (in (1)), or the number of sets in the given partition (in (2) and (3)).

We establish the asymptotic expansion in $\beta $ matrix models with a confining, off-critical potential in the regime where the support of the equilibrium measure is a finite union of segments. We first address the case where the filling fractions of these segments are fixed and show the existence of a $\frac {1}{N}$ expansion. We then study the asymptotics of the sum over the filling fractions to obtain the full asymptotic expansion for the initial problem in the multi-cut regime. In particular, we identify the fluctuations of the linear statistics and show that they are approximated in law by the sum of a Gaussian random variable and an independent Gaussian discrete random variable with oscillating center. Fluctuations of filling fractions are also described by an oscillating discrete Gaussian random variable. We apply our results to study the all-order small dispersion asymptotics of solutions of the Toda chain associated with the one Hermitian matrix model ($\beta = 2$) as well as orthogonal ($\beta = 1$) and skew-orthogonal ($\beta = 4$) polynomials outside the bulk.

We show that there is a Borel graph on a standard Borel space of Borel chromatic number three that admits a Borel homomorphism to every analytic graph on a standard Borel space of Borel chromatic number at least three. Moreover, we characterize the Borel graphs on standard Borel spaces of vertex-degree at most two with this property and show that the analogous result for digraphs fails.

We study the distribution of the length of longest increasing subsequences in random permutations of n integers as n grows large and establish an asymptotic expansion in powers of $n^{-1/3}$. Whilst the limit law was already shown by Baik, Deift and Johansson to be the GUE Tracy–Widom distribution F, we find explicit analytic expressions of the first few finite-size correction terms as linear combinations of higher order derivatives of F with rational polynomial coefficients. Our proof replaces Johansson’s de-Poissonization, which is based on monotonicity as a Tauberian condition, by analytic de-Poissonization of Jacquet and Szpankowski, which is based on growth conditions in the complex plane; it is subject to a tameness hypothesis concerning complex zeros of the analytically continued Poissonized length distribution. In a preparatory step an expansion of the hard-to-soft edge transition law of LUE is studied, which is lifted to an expansion of the Poissonized length distribution for large intensities. Finally, expansions of Stirling-type approximations and of the expected value and variance of the length distribution are given.

Given a negatively graded Calabi-Yau algebra, we regard it as a DG algebra with vanishing differentials and study its cluster category. We show that this DG algebra is sign-twisted Calabi-Yau and realise its cluster category as a triangulated hull of an orbit category of a derived category and as the singularity category of a finite-dimensional Iwanaga-Gorenstein algebra. Along the way, we give two results that stand on their own. First, we show that the derived category of coherent sheaves over a Calabi-Yau algebra has a natural cluster tilting subcategory whose dimension is determined by the Calabi-Yau dimension and the a-invariant of the algebra. Second, we prove that two DG orbit categories obtained from a DG endofunctor and its homotopy inverse are quasi-equivalent. As an application, we show that the higher cluster category of a higher representation infinite algebra is triangle equivalent to the singularity category of an Iwanaga-Gorenstein algebra, which is explicitly described. Also, we demonstrate that our results generalise the context of Keller–Murfet–Van den Bergh on the derived orbit category involving a square root of the AR translation.

This article deals with the problem of when, given a collection $\mathcal {C}$ of weakly compact operators between separable Banach spaces, there exists a separable reflexive Banach space Z with a Schauder basis so that every element in $\mathcal {C}$ factors through Z (or through a subspace of Z). In particular, we show that there exists a reflexive space Z with a Schauder basis so that for each separable Banach space X, each weakly compact operator from X to $L_1[0,1]$ factors through Z.

We also prove the following descriptive set theoretical result: Let $\mathcal {L}$ be the standard Borel space of bounded operators between separable Banach spaces. We show that if $\mathcal {B}$ is a Borel subset of weakly compact operators between Banach spaces with separable duals, then for $A \in \mathcal {B}$, the assignment $A \to A^*$ can be realised by a Borel map $\mathcal {B}\to \mathcal {L}$.

Given a finite group $G$, the generating graph $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}(G)$ of $G$ has as vertices the (nontrivial) elements of $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if they are distinct and generate $G$ as group elements. In this paper we investigate properties about the degrees of the vertices of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}(G)$ when $G$ is an alternating group or a symmetric group of degree $n$. In particular, we determine the vertices of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}(G)$ having even degree and show that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}(G)$ is Eulerian if and only if $n\geqslant 3$ and $n$ and $n-1$ are not equal to a prime number congruent to 3 modulo 4.

Let $w_{1}$ and $w_{2}$ be nontrivial words in free groups $F_{n_{1}}$ and $F_{n_{2}}$, respectively. We prove that, for all sufficiently large finite nonabelian simple groups $G$, there exist subsets $C_{1}\subseteq w_{1}(G)$ and $C_{2}\subseteq w_{2}(G)$ such that $|C_{i}|=O(|G|^{1/2}\log ^{1/2}|G|)$ and $C_{1}C_{2}=G$. In particular, if $w$ is any nontrivial word and $G$ is a sufficiently large finite nonabelian simple group, then $w(G)$ contains a thin base of order $2$. This is a nonabelian analog of a result of Van Vu [‘On a refinement of Waring’s problem’, Duke Math. J. 105(1) (2000), 107–134.] for the classical Waring problem. Further results concerning thin bases of $G$ of order $2$ are established for any finite group and for any compact Lie group $G$.
