For families of smooth complex projective varieties, we show that normal functions arising from algebraically trivial cycle classes are algebraic and defined over the field of definition of the family. In particular, the zero loci of those functions are algebraic and defined over such a field of definition. This proves a conjecture of Charles.

For a finite-type surface $\mathfrak {S}$, we study a preferred basis for the commutative algebra $\mathbb {C}[\mathscr {R}_{\mathrm {SL}_3(\mathbb {C})}(\mathfrak {S})]$ of regular functions on the $\mathrm {SL}_3(\mathbb {C})$-character variety, introduced by Sikora–Westbury. These basis elements come from the trace functions associated to certain trivalent graphs embedded in the surface $\mathfrak {S}$. We show that this basis can be naturally indexed by nonnegative integer coordinates, defined by Knutson–Tao rhombus inequalities and modulo 3 congruence conditions. These coordinates are related, by the geometric theory of Fock and Goncharov, to the tropical points at infinity of the dual version of the character variety.

We prove a version of Clifford’s theorem for metrized complexes. Namely, a metrized complex that carries a divisor of degree $2r$ and rank $r$ (for $0<r<g-1$) also carries a divisor of degree 2 and rank 1. We provide a structure theorem for hyperelliptic metrized complexes, and use it to classify divisors of degree bounded by the genus. We discuss a tropical version of Martens’ theorem for metric graphs.

In this note, we prove the logarithmic $p$-adic comparison theorem for open rigid analytic varieties. We prove that a smooth rigid analytic variety with a strict simple normal crossing divisor is locally $K(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B},1)$ (in a certain sense) with respect to $\mathbb{F}_{p}$-local systems and ramified coverings along the divisor. We follow Scholze’s method to produce a pro-version of the Faltings site and use this site to prove a primitive comparison theorem in our setting. After introducing period sheaves in our setting, we prove aforesaid comparison theorem.

We use the method of Bruinier–Raum to show that symmetric formal Fourier–Jacobi series, in the cases of norm-Euclidean imaginary quadratic fields, are Hermitian modular forms. Consequently, combining a theorem of Yifeng Liu, we deduce Kudla’s conjecture on the modularity of generating series of special cycles of arbitrary codimension for unitary Shimura varieties defined in these cases.

In this article we prove the explicit Mordell Conjecture for large families of curves. In addition, we introduce a method, of easy application, to compute all rational points on curves of quite general shape and increasing genus. The method bases on some explicit and sharp estimates for the height of such rational points, and the bounds are small enough to successfully implement a computer search. As an evidence of the simplicity of its application, we present a variety of explicit examples and explain how to produce many others. In the appendix our method is compared in detail to the classical method of Manin–Demjanenko and the analysis of our explicit examples is carried to conclusion.

We study in $\mathbb {R}^{3+1}$ a system of nonlinearly coupled Klein-Gordon equations under the null condition, with (possibly vanishing) mass varying in the interval $[0, 1]$. Our goal is three-fold, which extends the results in the earlier work of [5, 3]: 1) we want to establish the global well-posedness result to the system that is uniform in terms of the mass parameter (i.e., the smallness of the initial data is independent of the mass parameter); 2) we want to obtain a unified pointwise decay result for the solution to the system, in the sense that the solution decays more like a wave component (independent of the mass parameter) in a certain range of time, while the solution decays as a Klein-Gordon component with a factor depending on the mass parameter in the other part of the time range; 3) the solution to the Klein-Gordon system converges to the solution to the corresponding wave system in a certain sense when the mass parameter goes to 0. In order to achieve these goals, we will rely on both the flat and hyperboloidal foliation of the spacetime and prove a mass-independent $L^2$–type energy estimate for the Klein-Gordon equations with possibly vanishing mass. In addition, the case of the Klein-Gordon equations with certain restricted large data is discussed.

Let $G$ be a finite almost simple group. It is well known that $G$ can be generated by three elements, and in previous work we showed that 6 generators suffice for all maximal subgroups of $G$. In this paper, we consider subgroups at the next level of the subgroup lattice—the so-called second maximal subgroups. We prove that with the possible exception of some families of rank 1 groups of Lie type, the number of generators of every second maximal subgroup of $G$ is bounded by an absolute constant. We also show that such a bound holds without any exceptions if and only if there are only finitely many primes $r$ for which there is a prime power $q$ such that $(q^{r}-1)/(q-1)$ is prime. The latter statement is a formidable open problem in Number Theory. Applications to random generation and polynomial growth are also given.

We develop a theory of parabolic induction and restriction functors relating modules over Coulomb branch algebras, in the sense of Braverman-Finkelberg-Nakajima. Our functors generalize Bezrukavnikov-Etingof’s induction and restriction functors for Cherednik algebras, but their definition uses different tools.

After this general definition, we focus on quiver gauge theories attached to a quiver $\Gamma $. The induction and restriction functors allow us to define a categorical action of the corresponding symmetric Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak {g}_{\Gamma }$ on category $ \mathcal {O}$ for these Coulomb branch algebras. When $ \Gamma $ is of Dynkin type, the Coulomb branch algebras are truncated shifted Yangians and quantize generalized affine Grassmannian slices. Thus, we regard our action as a categorification of the geometric Satake correspondence.

To establish this categorical action, we define a new class of ‘flavoured’ KLRW algebras, which are similar to the diagrammatic algebras originally constructed by the second author for the purpose of tensor product categorification. We prove an equivalence between the category of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over a Coulomb branch algebra and the modules over a flavoured KLRW algebra. This equivalence relates the categorical action by induction and restriction functors to the usual categorical action on modules over a KLRW algebra.

We prove that the coherent cohomology of a proper morphism of noetherian schemes can be made arbitrarily $p$-divisible by passage to proper covers (for a fixed prime $p$). Under some extra conditions, we also show that $p$-torsion can be killed by passage to proper covers. These results are motivated by the desire to understand rational singularities in mixed characteristic, and have applications in $p$-adic Hodge theory.

One of the central questions in Ramsey theory asks how small the largest clique and independent set in a graph on N vertices can be. By the celebrated result of Erdős from 1947, a random graph on N vertices with edge probability $1/2$ contains no clique or independent set larger than $2\log _2 N$ , with high probability. Finding explicit constructions of graphs with similar Ramsey-type properties is a famous open problem. A natural approach is to construct such graphs using algebraic tools.

Say that an r-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal {H}$ is algebraic of complexity $(n,d,m)$ if the vertices of $\mathcal {H}$ are elements of $\mathbb {F}^{n}$ for some field $\mathbb {F}$ , and there exist m polynomials $f_1,\dots ,f_m:(\mathbb {F}^{n})^{r}\rightarrow \mathbb {F}$ of degree at most d such that the edges of $\mathcal {H}$ are determined by the zero-patterns of $f_1,\dots ,f_m$ . The aim of this paper is to show that if an algebraic graph (or hypergraph) of complexity $(n,d,m)$ has good Ramsey properties, then at least one of the parameters $n,d,m$ must be large.

In 2001, Rónyai, Babai and Ganapathy considered the bipartite variant of the Ramsey problem and proved that if G is an algebraic graph of complexity $(n,d,m)$ on N vertices, then either G or its complement contains a complete balanced bipartite graph of size $\Omega _{n,d,m}(N^{1/(n+1)})$ . We extend this result by showing that such G contains either a clique or an independent set of size $N^{\Omega (1/ndm)}$ and prove similar results for algebraic hypergraphs of constant complexity. We also obtain a polynomial regularity lemma for r-uniform algebraic hypergraphs that are defined by a single polynomial that might be of independent interest. Our proofs combine algebraic, geometric and combinatorial tools.

For each prime p, we show that there exist geometrically simple abelian varieties A over ${\mathbb Q}$ with . Specifically, for any prime $N\equiv 1 \ \pmod p$ , let $A_f$ be an optimal quotient of $J_0(N)$ with a rational point P of order p, and let $B = A_f/\langle P \rangle $ . Then the number of positive integers $d \leq X$ with is $ \gg X/\log X$ , where $\widehat B_d$ is the dual of the dth quadratic twist of B. We prove this more generally for abelian varieties of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_2$ -type with a p-isogeny satisfying a mild technical condition. In the special case of elliptic curves, we give stronger results, including many examples where for an explicit positive proportion of integers d.

We obtain a criterion for an analytic subset of a Euclidean space to contain points of differentiability of a typical Lipschitz function: namely, that it cannot be covered by countably many sets, each of which is closed and purely unrectifiable (has a zero-length intersection with every $C^1$ curve). Surprisingly, we establish that any set failing this criterion witnesses the opposite extreme of typical behaviour: in any such coverable set, a typical Lipschitz function is everywhere severely non-differentiable.

We show that the measure of maximal entropy of every complex Hénon map is exponentially mixing of all orders for Hölder observables. As a consequence, the Central Limit Theorem holds for all Hölder observables.

Let A be an abelian scheme of dimension at least four over a $\mathbb {Z}$ -finitely generated integral domain R of characteristic zero, and let L be an ample line bundle on A. We prove that the set of smooth hypersurfaces D in A representing L is finite by showing that the moduli stack of such hypersurfaces has only finitely many R-points. We accomplish this by using level structures to interpolate finiteness results between this moduli stack and the stack of canonically polarized varieties.

A conic bundle is a contraction $X\to Z$ between normal varieties of relative dimension $1$ such that $-K_X$ is relatively ample. We prove a conjecture of Shokurov that predicts that if $X\to Z$ is a conic bundle such that X has canonical singularities and Z is $\mathbb {Q}$ -Gorenstein, then Z is always $\frac {1}{2}$ -lc, and the multiplicities of the fibres over codimension $1$ points are bounded from above by $2$ . Both values $\frac {1}{2}$ and $2$ are sharp. This is achieved by solving a more general conjecture of Shokurov on singularities of bases of lc-trivial fibrations of relative dimension $1$ with canonical singularities.

We give an elementary symmetric function expansion for the expressions $M\Delta _{m_\gamma e_1}\Pi e_\lambda ^{\ast }$ and $M\Delta _{m_\gamma e_1}\Pi s_\lambda ^{\ast }$ when $t=1$ in terms of what we call $\gamma $-parking functions and lattice $\gamma $-parking functions. Here, $\Delta _F$ and $\Pi $ are certain eigenoperators of the modified Macdonald basis and $M=(1-q)(1-t)$. Our main results, in turn, give an elementary basis expansion at $t=1$ for symmetric functions of the form $M \Delta _{Fe_1} \Theta _{G} J$ whenever F is expanded in terms of monomials, G is expanded in terms of the elementary basis, and J is expanded in terms of the modified elementary basis $\{\Pi e_\lambda ^\ast \}_\lambda $. Even the most special cases of this general Delta and Theta operator expression are significant; we highlight a few of these special cases. We end by giving an e-positivity conjecture for when t is not specialized, proposing that our objects can also give the elementary basis expansion in the unspecialized symmetric function.

Faltings ringed topos, the keystone of Faltings’ approach to p-adic Hodge theory for a smooth variety over a local field, relies on the choice of an integral model, and its good properties depend on the (logarithmic) smoothness of this model. Inspired by Deligne’s approach to classical Hodge theory for singular varieties, we establish a cohomological descent result for the structural sheaf of Faltings topos, which makes it possible to extend Faltings’ approach to any integral model, that is, without any smoothness assumption. An essential ingredient of our proof is a variation of Bhatt–Scholze’s arc-descent of perfectoid rings.

We construct infinitely many compact, smooth 4-manifolds which are homotopy equivalent to $S^{2}$ but do not admit a spine (that is, a piecewise linear embedding of $S^{2}$ that realizes the homotopy equivalence). This is the remaining case in the existence problem for codimension-2 spines in simply connected manifolds. The obstruction comes from the Heegaard Floer $d$ invariants.

Dirac rings are commutative algebras in the symmetric monoidal category of $\mathbb {Z}$-graded abelian groups with the Koszul sign in the symmetry isomorphism. In the prequel to this paper, we developed the commutative algebra of Dirac rings and defined the category of Dirac schemes. Here, we embed this category in the larger $\infty $-category of Dirac stacks, which also contains formal Dirac schemes, and develop the coherent cohomology of Dirac stacks. We apply the general theory to stable homotopy theory and use Quillen’s theorem on complex cobordism and Milnor’s theorem on the dual Steenrod algebra to identify the Dirac stacks corresponding to $\operatorname {MU}$ and $\mathbb {F}_p$ in terms of their functors of points. Finally, in an appendix, we develop a rudimentary theory of accessible presheaves.
