We find defining equations for the Shimura curve of discriminant 15 over $\mathbb{Z}[1/15]$. We then determine the graded ring of automorphic forms over the 2-adic integers, as well as the higher cohomology. We apply this to calculate the homotopy groups of a spectrum of ‘topological automorphic forms’ associated to this curve, as well as one associated to a quotient by an Atkin–Lehner involution.

We show that for infinitely many primes p there exist dual functions of order k over ${\mathbb{F}}_p^n$ that cannot be approximated in $L_\infty $-distance by polynomial phase functions of degree $k-1$. This answers in the negative a natural finite-field analogue of a problem of Frantzikinakis on $L_\infty $-approximations of dual functions over ${\mathbb{N}}$ (a.k.a. multiple correlation sequences) by nilsequences.

Let $X_4\subset \mathbb {P}^{n+1}$ be a quartic hypersurface of dimension $n\geq 4$ over an infinite field k. We show that if either $X_4$ contains a linear subspace $\Lambda $ of dimension $h\geq \max \{2,\dim (\Lambda \cap \operatorname {\mathrm {Sing}}(X_4))+2\}$ or has double points along a linear subspace of dimension $h\geq 3$ , a smooth k-rational point and is otherwise general, then $X_4$ is unirational over k. This improves previous results by A. Predonzan and J. Harris, B. Mazur and R. Pandharipande for quartics. We also provide a density result for the k-rational points of quartic $3$ -folds with a double plane over a number field, and several unirationality results for quintic hypersurfaces over a $C_r$ field.

We prove that the cohomology rings of the moduli space $M_{d,\chi }$ of one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane are not isomorphic for general different choices of the Euler characteristics. This stands in contrast to the $\chi $-independence of the Betti numbers of these moduli spaces. As a corollary, we deduce that $M_{d,\chi }$ are topologically different unless they are related by obvious symmetries, strengthening a previous result of Woolf distinguishing them as algebraic varieties.

Let $\varepsilon> 0$ be sufficiently small and let $0 < \eta < 1/522$ . We show that if X is large enough in terms of $\varepsilon $ , then for any squarefree integer $q \leq X^{196/261-\varepsilon }$ that is $X^{\eta }$ -smooth one can obtain an asymptotic formula with power-saving error term for the number of squarefree integers in an arithmetic progression $a \pmod {q}$ , with $(a,q) = 1$ . In the case of squarefree, smooth moduli this improves upon previous work of Nunes, in which $196/261 = 0.75096\ldots $ was replaced by $25/36 = 0.69\overline {4}$ . This also establishes a level of distribution for a positive density set of moduli that improves upon a result of Hooley. We show more generally that one can break the $X^{3/4}$ -barrier for a density 1 set of $X^{\eta }$ -smooth moduli q (without the squarefree condition).

Our proof appeals to the q-analogue of the van der Corput method of exponential sums, due to Heath-Brown, to reduce the task to estimating correlations of certain Kloosterman-type complete exponential sums modulo prime powers. In the prime case we obtain a power-saving bound via a cohomological treatment of these complete sums, while in the higher prime power case we establish savings of this kind using p-adic methods.

We give conditions for a uniruled variety of dimension at least 2 to be nonsolid. This study provides further evidence to a conjecture by Abban and Okada on the solidity of Fano 3-folds. To complement our results we write explicit birational links from Fano 3-folds of high codimension embedded in weighted projective spaces.

Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension $n\geq 2$ and $G\cong \mathbf {Z}^{n-1}$ a free abelian group of automorphisms of X over $\overline {\mathbf {Q}}$. Suppose that G is of positive entropy. We construct a canonical height function $\widehat {h}_G$ associated with G, corresponding to a nef and big $\mathbf {R}$-divisor, satisfying the Northcott property. By characterizing the zero locus of $\widehat {h}_G$, we prove the Kawaguchi–Silverman conjecture for each element of G. As for other applications, we determine the height counting function for non-periodic points and show that X satisfies potential density.

A new reciprocity formula for Dirichlet L-functions associated to an arbitrary primitive Dirichlet character of prime modulus q is established. We find an identity relating the fourth moment of individual Dirichlet L-functions in the t-aspect to the cubic moment of central L-values of Hecke–Maaß newforms of level at most $q^{2}$ and primitive central character $\psi ^{2}$ averaged over all primitive nonquadratic characters $\psi $ modulo q. Our formula can be thought of as a reverse version of recent work of Petrow–Young. Direct corollaries involve a variant of Iwaniec’s short interval fourth moment bound and the twelfth moment bound for Dirichlet L-functions, which generalise work of Jutila and Heath-Brown, respectively. This work traverses an intersection of classical analytic number theory and automorphic forms.

In [12], John Stillwell wrote, ‘finding the exact strength of the Brouwer invariance theorems seems to me one of the most interesting open problems in reverse mathematics.’ In this article, we solve Stillwell’s problem by showing that (some forms of) the Brouwer invariance theorems are equivalent to the weak König’s lemma over the base system ${\sf RCA}_0$ . In particular, there exists an explicit algorithm which, whenever the weak König’s lemma is false, constructs a topological embedding of $\mathbb {R}^4$ into $\mathbb {R}^3$ .

Let X be a smooth proper variety over a field k and suppose that the degree map ${\mathrm {CH}}_0(X \otimes _k K) \to \mathbb {Z}$ is isomorphic for any field extension $K/k$. We show that $G(\operatorname {Spec} k) \to G(X)$ is an isomorphism for any $\mathbb {P}^1$-invariant Nisnevich sheaf with transfers G. This generalises a result of Binda, Rülling and Saito that proves the same conclusion for reciprocity sheaves. We also give a direct proof of the fact that the unramified logarithmic Hodge–Witt cohomology is a $\mathbb {P}^1$-invariant Nisnevich sheaf with transfers.

We study questions in incidence geometry where the precise position of points is ‘blurry’ (for example due to noise, inaccuracy or error). Thus lines are replaced by narrow tubes, and more generally affine subspaces are replaced by their small neighborhood. We show that the presence of a sufficiently large number of approximately collinear triples in a set of points in ${\mathbb{C}}^d$ implies that the points are close to a low dimensional affine subspace. This can be viewed as a stable variant of the Sylvester–Gallai theorem and its extensions. Building on the recently found connection between Sylvester–Gallai type theorems and complex locally correctable codes (LCCs), we define the new notion of stable LCCs, in which the (local) correction procedure can also handle small perturbations in the Euclidean metric. We prove that such stable codes with constant query complexity do not exist. No impossibility results were known in any such local setting for more than two queries.

We construct coloured lattice models whose partition functions represent symplectic and odd orthogonal Demazure characters and atoms. We show that our lattice models are not solvable, but we are able to show the existence of sufficiently many solutions of the Yang–Baxter equation that allow us to compute functional equations for the corresponding partition functions. From these functional equations, we determine that the partition function of our models are the Demazure atoms and characters for the symplectic and odd orthogonal Lie groups. We coin our lattice models as quasi-solvable. We use the natural bijection of admissible states in our models with Proctor patterns to give a right key algorithm for reverse King tableaux and Sundaram tableaux.

Let n be a nonnegative integer. For each composition $\alpha $ of n, Berg, Bergeron, Saliola, Serrano and Zabrocki introduced a cyclic indecomposable $H_n(0)$ -module $\mathcal {V}_{\alpha }$ with a dual immaculate quasisymmetric function as the image of the quasisymmetric characteristic. In this paper, we study $\mathcal {V}_{\alpha }$ s from the homological viewpoint. To be precise, we construct a minimal projective presentation of $\mathcal {V}_{\alpha }$ and a minimal injective presentation of $\mathcal {V}_{\alpha }$ as well. Using them, we compute $\mathrm {Ext}^1_{H_n(0)}(\mathcal {V}_{\alpha }, \mathbf {F}_{\beta })$ and $\mathrm {Ext}^1_{H_n(0)}( \mathbf {F}_{\beta }, \mathcal {V}_{\alpha })$ , where $\mathbf {F}_{\beta }$ is the simple $H_n(0)$ -module attached to a composition $\beta $ of n. We also compute $\mathrm {Ext}_{H_n(0)}^i(\mathcal {V}_{\alpha },\mathcal {V}_{\beta })$ when $i=0,1$ and $\beta \le _l \alpha $ , where $\le _l$ represents the lexicographic order on compositions.

Let G be a permutation group on a finite set $\Omega $. The base size of G is the minimal size of a subset of $\Omega $ with trivial pointwise stabiliser in G. In this paper, we extend earlier work of Fawcett by determining the precise base size of every finite primitive permutation group of diagonal type. In particular, this is the first family of primitive groups arising in the O’Nan–Scott theorem for which the exact base size has been computed in all cases. Our methods also allow us to determine all the primitive groups of diagonal type with a unique regular suborbit.

Let A be a finite set with , let n be a positive integer, and let $A^n$ denote the discrete $n\text {-dimensional}$ hypercube (that is, $A^n$ is the Cartesian product of n many copies of A). Given a family $\langle D_t:t\in A^n\rangle $ of measurable events in a probability space (a stochastic process), what structural information can be obtained assuming that the events $\langle D_t:t\in A^n\rangle $ are not behaving as if they were independent? We obtain an answer to this problem (in a strong quantitative sense) subject to a mild ‘stationarity’ condition. Our result has a number of combinatorial consequences, including a new (and the most informative so far) proof of the density Hales-Jewett theorem.

This project uses methods in geometric analysis to study almost complex manifolds. We introduce the notion of biharmonic almost complex structure on a compact almost Hermitian manifold and study its regularity and existence in dimension four. First, we show that there always exists smooth energy-minimizing biharmonic almost-complex structures for any almost Hermitian four manifold. Then, we study the existence problem where the homotopy class is specified. Given a homotopy class $[\tau ]$ of an almost complex structure, using the fact $\pi _4(S^2)=\mathbb {Z}_2$ , there exists a canonical operation p on the homotopy classes satisfying $p^2=\text {id}$ such that $p([\tau ])$ and $[\tau ]$ have the same first Chern class. We prove that there exists an energy-minimizing biharmonic almost complex structure in the companion homotopy classes $[\tau ]$ and $p([\tau ])$ . Our results show that, When M is simply connected, there exists an energy-minimizing biharmonic almost complex structure in the homotopy classes with the given first Chern class.

For a finite group $G$, let $d(G)$ denote the minimal number of elements required to generate $G$. In this paper, we prove sharp upper bounds on $d(H)$ whenever $H$ is a maximal subgroup of a finite almost simple group. In particular, we show that $d(H)\leqslant 5$ and that $d(H)\geqslant 4$ if and only if $H$ occurs in a known list. This improves a result of Burness, Liebeck and Shalev. The method involves the theory of crowns in finite groups.

In this paper, the authors introduce a new notion called the quantum wreath product, which is the algebra $B \wr _Q \mathcal {H}(d)$ produced from a given algebra B, a positive integer d and a choice $Q=(R,S,\rho ,\sigma )$ of parameters. Important examples that arise from our construction include many variants of the Hecke algebras, such as the Ariki–Koike algebras, the affine Hecke algebras and their degenerate version, Wan–Wang’s wreath Hecke algebras, Rosso–Savage’s (affine) Frobenius Hecke algebras, Kleshchev–Muth’s affine zigzag algebras and the Hu algebra that quantizes the wreath product $\Sigma _m \wr \Sigma _2$ between symmetric groups.

In the first part of the paper, the authors develop a structure theory for the quantum wreath products. Necessary and sufficient conditions for these algebras to afford a basis of suitable size are obtained. Furthermore, a Schur–Weyl duality is established via a splitting lemma and mild assumptions on the base algebra B. Our uniform approach encompasses many known results which were proved in a case by case manner. The second part of the paper involves the problem of constructing natural subalgebras of Hecke algebras that arise from wreath products. Moreover, a bar-invariant basis of the Hu algebra via an explicit formula for its extra generator is also described.

We study a relative variant of Serre’s notion of $G$-complete reducibility for a reductive algebraic group $G$. We let $K$ be a reductive subgroup of $G$, and consider subgroups of $G$ that normalize the identity component $K^{\circ }$. We show that such a subgroup is relatively $G$-completely reducible with respect to $K$ if and only if its image in the automorphism group of $K^{\circ }$ is completely reducible. This allows us to generalize a number of fundamental results from the absolute to the relative setting. We also derive analogous results for Lie subalgebras of the Lie algebra of $G$, as well as ‘rational’ versions over nonalgebraically closed fields.

For $\theta $ a small generic universal stability condition of degree $0$ and A a vector of integers adding up to $-k(2g-2+n)$, the spaces $\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,A}^\theta $ constructed in [AP21, HMP+22] are observed to lie inside the space $\textbf {Div}$ of [MW20], and their pullback under $\textbf {Rub} \to \textbf {Div}$ of loc. cit. to be smooth. This provides smooth and modular modifications $\widetilde {\mathcal {M}}_{g,A}^\theta $ of $\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n}$ on which the logarithmic double ramification cycle can be calculated by several methods.
