This is the second part of our study on the dimension theory of $C^1$ iterated function systems (IFSs) and repellers on $\mathbb {R}^d$ . In the first part [D.-J. Feng and K. Simon. Dimension estimates for $C^1$ iterated function systems and repellers. Part I. Preprint, 2020, arXiv:2007.15320], we proved that the upper box-counting dimension of the attractor of every $C^1$ IFS on ${\Bbb R}^d$ is bounded above by its singularity dimension, and the upper packing dimension of every ergodic invariant measure associated with this IFS is bounded above by its Lyapunov dimension. Here we introduce a generalized transversality condition (GTC) for parameterized families of $C^1$ IFSs, and show that if the GTC is satisfied, then the dimensions of the IFS attractor and of the ergodic invariant measures are given by these upper bounds for almost every (in an appropriate sense) parameter. Moreover, we verify the GTC for some parameterized families of $C^1$ IFSs on ${\Bbb R}^d$ .

A gap mapping is a discontinuous interval mapping with two strictly increasing branches that have a gap between their ranges. They are one-dimensional dynamical systems, which arise in the study of certain higher dimensional flows, for example the Lorenz flow and the Cherry flow. In this paper, we prove hyperbolicity of renormalization acting on $C^3$ dissipative gap mappings, and show that the topological conjugacy classes of infinitely renormalizable gap mappings are $C^1$ manifolds.

Multiplicative constants are a fundamental tool in the study of maximal representations. In this paper, we show how to extend such notion, and the associated framework, to measurable cocycles theory. As an application of this approach, we define and study the Cartan invariant for measurable $\mathrm{PU}(m,1)$ -cocycles of complex hyperbolic lattices.

We compute the gap distribution of directions of saddle connections for two classes of translation surfaces. One class will be the translation surfaces arising from gluing two identical tori along a slit. These yield the first explicit computations of gap distributions for non-lattice translation surfaces. We show that this distribution has support at zero and quadratic tail decay. We also construct examples of translation surfaces in any genus $d>1$ that have the same gap distribution as the gap distribution of two identical tori glued along a slit. The second class we consider are twice-marked tori and saddle connections between distinct marked points with a specific orientation. These results can be interpreted as the gap distribution of slopes of affine lattices. We obtain our results by translating the question of gap distributions to a dynamical question of return times to a transversal under the horocycle flow on an appropriate moduli space.

We develop the notion of the Rokhlin dimension for partial actions of finite groups, extending the well-established theory for global systems. The partial setting exhibits phenomena that cannot be expected for global actions, usually stemming from the fact that virtually all averaging arguments for finite group actions completely break down for partial systems. For example, fixed point algebras and crossed products are not in general Morita equivalent, and there is in general no local approximation of the crossed product $A\rtimes G$ by matrices over A. Using decomposition arguments for partial actions of finite groups, we show that a number of structural properties are preserved by formation of crossed products, including finite stable rank, finite nuclear dimension, and absorption of a strongly self-absorbing $C^*$ -algebra. Some of our results are new even in the global case.

We also study the Rokhlin dimension of globalizable actions: while in general it differs from the Rokhlin dimension of its globalization, we show that they agree if the coefficient algebra is unital. For topological partial actions on spaces of finite covering dimension, we show that finiteness of the Rokhlin dimension is equivalent to freeness, thus providing a large class of examples to which our theory applies.

Consider an analytic Hamiltonian system near its analytic invariant torus $\mathcal T_0$ carrying zero frequency. We assume that the Birkhoff normal form of the Hamiltonian at $\mathcal T_0$ is convergent and has a particular form: it is an analytic function of its non-degenerate quadratic part. We prove that in this case there is an analytic canonical transformation—not just a formal power series—bringing the Hamiltonian into its Birkhoff normal form.

We prove that in every compact space of Delone sets in ${\mathbb {R}}^d$ , which is minimal with respect to the action by translations, either all Delone sets are uniformly spread or continuously many distinct bounded displacement equivalence classes are represented, none of which contains a lattice. The implied limits are taken with respect to the Chabauty–Fell topology, which is the natural topology on the space of closed subsets of ${\mathbb {R}}^d$ . This topology coincides with the standard local topology in the finite local complexity setting, and it follows that the dichotomy holds for all minimal spaces of Delone sets associated with well-studied constructions such as cut-and-project sets and substitution tilings, whether or not finite local complexity is assumed.

Given any smooth Anosov map, we construct a Banach space on which the associated transfer operator is quasi-compact. The peculiarity of such a space is that, in the case of expanding maps, it reduces exactly to the usual space of functions of bounded variation which has proved to be particularly successful in studying the statistical properties of piecewise expanding maps. Our approach is based on a new method of studying the absolute continuity of foliations, which provides new information that could prove useful in treating hyperbolic systems with singularities.

We present examples of nearly integrable analytic Hamiltonian systems with several strong diffusion properties: topological weak mixing and diffusion at all times. These examples are obtained by AbC constructions with several frequencies.

We develop a thermodynamic formalism for a smooth realization of pseudo-Anosov surface homeomorphisms. In this realization, the singularities of the pseudo-Anosov map are assumed to be fixed, and the trajectories are slowed down so the differential is the identity at these points. Using Young towers, we prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for geometric t-potentials. This family of equilibrium states includes a unique SRB measure and a measure of maximal entropy, the latter of which has exponential decay of correlations and the central limit theorem.

We give an example of a principal algebraic action of the non-commutative free group ${\mathbb {F}}$ of rank two by automorphisms of a connected compact abelian group for which there is an explicit measurable isomorphism with the full Bernoulli 3-shift action of ${\mathbb {F}}$ . The isomorphism is defined using homoclinic points, a method that has been used to construct symbolic covers of algebraic actions. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a Bernoulli algebraic action of ${\mathbb {F}}$ without an obvious independent generator. Our methods can be generalized to a large class of acting groups.

We prove that uniform hyperbolicity is invariant under topological conjugacy for dissipative polynomial automorphisms of $\mathbb {C}^2$ . Along the way we also show that a sufficient condition for hyperbolicity is that local stable and unstable manifolds of saddle points have uniform geometry.

We give a necessary and sufficient condition on $\beta $ of the natural extension of a $\beta $ -shift, so that any equilibrium measure for a function of bounded total oscillations is a weak Gibbs measure.

We consider random walks on the group of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the real line ${\mathbb R}$ . In particular, the fundamental question of uniqueness of an invariant measure of the generated process is raised. This problem was studied by Choquet and Deny [Sur l’équation de convolution $\mu = \mu * \sigma $ . C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris250 (1960), 799–801] in the context of random walks generated by translations of the line. Nowadays the answer is quite well understood in general settings of strongly contractive systems. Here we focus on a broader class of systems satisfying the conditions of recurrence, contraction and unbounded action. We prove that under these conditions the random process possesses a unique invariant Radon measure on ${\mathbb R}$ . Our work can be viewed as following on from Babillot et al [The random difference equation $X_n=A_n X_{n-1}+B_n$ in the critical case. Ann. Probab.25(1) (1997), 478–493] and Deroin et al [Symmetric random walk on $\mathrm {HOMEO}^{+}(\mathbb {R})$ . Ann. Probab.41(3B) (2013), 2066–2089].

We investigate the location of zeros for the partition function of the anti-ferromagnetic Ising model, focusing on the zeros lying on the unit circle. We give a precise characterization for the class of rooted Cayley trees, showing that the zeros are nowhere dense on the most interesting circular arcs. In contrast, we prove that when considering all graphs with a given degree bound, the zeros are dense in a circular sub-arc, implying that Cayley trees are in this sense not extremal. The proofs rely on describing the rational dynamical systems arising when considering ratios of partition functions on recursively defined trees.

This is the first of a series of two papers dealing with local limit theorems in relatively hyperbolic groups. In this first paper, we prove rough estimates for the Green function. Along the way, we introduce the notion of relative automaticity which will be useful in both papers and we show that relatively hyperbolic groups are relatively automatic. We also define the notion of spectral positive recurrence for random walks on relatively hyperbolic groups. We then use our estimates for the Green function to prove that $p_n\asymp R^{-n}n^{-3/2}$ for spectrally positive-recurrent random walks, where $p_n$ is the probability of going back to the origin at time n and where R is the inverse of the spectral radius of the random walk.

We prove a normal form for strong magnetic fields on a closed, oriented surface and use it to derive two dynamical results for the associated flow. First, we show the existence of invariant tori and trapping regions provided a natural non-resonance condition holds. Second, we prove that the flow cannot be Zoll unless (i) the Riemannian metric has constant curvature and the magnetic function is constant, or (ii) the magnetic function vanishes and the metric is Zoll. We complement the second result by exhibiting an exotic magnetic field on a flat two-torus yielding a Zoll flow for arbitrarily weak rescalings.

We show that every countable group with infinite finite conjugacy (FC)-center has the Schmidt property, that is, admits a free, ergodic, measure-preserving action on a standard probability space such that the full group of the associated orbit equivalence relation contains a non-trivial central sequence. As a consequence, every countable, inner amenable group with property (T) has the Schmidt property.

We bound the number of distinct minimal subsystems of a given transitive subshift of linear complexity, continuing work of Ormes and Pavlov [On the complexity function for sequences which are not uniformly recurrent. Dynamical Systems and Random Processes (Contemporary Mathematics, 736). American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2019, pp. 125--137]. We also bound the number of generic measures such a subshift can support based on its complexity function. Our measure-theoretic bounds generalize those of Boshernitzan [A unique ergodicity of minimal symbolic flows with linear block growth. J. Anal. Math.44(1) (1984), 77–96] and are closely related to those of Cyr and Kra [Counting generic measures for a subshift of linear growth. J. Eur. Math. Soc.21(2) (2019), 355–380].

Many authors have studied the dynamics of hyperbolic transcendental entire functions; these are functions for which the postsingular set is a compact subset of the Fatou set. Equivalently, they are characterized as being expanding. Mihaljević-Brandt studied a more general class of maps for which finitely many of their postsingular points can be in their Julia set, and showed that these maps are also expanding with respect to a certain orbifold metric. In this paper we generalize these ideas further, and consider a class of maps for which the postsingular set is not even bounded. We are able to prove that these maps are also expanding with respect to a suitable orbifold metric, and use this expansion to draw conclusions on the topology and dynamics of the maps. In particular, we generalize existing results for hyperbolic functions, giving criteria for the boundedness of Fatou components and local connectivity of Julia sets. As part of this study, we develop some novel results on hyperbolic orbifold metrics. These are of independent interest, and may have future applications in holomorphic dynamics.
