We examine multiple ergodic averages of commuting transformations with polynomial iterates in which the polynomials may be pairwise dependent. In particular, we show that such averages are controlled by the Gowers–Host–Kra seminorms whenever the system satisfies some mild ergodicity assumptions. Combining this result with the general criteria for joint ergodicity established in our earlier work, we determine a necessary and sufficient condition under which such averages are jointly ergodic, in the sense that they converge in the mean to the product of integrals, or weakly jointly ergodic, in that they converge to the product of conditional expectations. As a corollary, we deduce a special case of a conjecture by Donoso, Koutsogiannis, and Sun in a stronger form.

We give a characterization of inter-model sets with Euclidean internal space. This characterization is similar to previous results for general inter-model sets obtained independently by Baake, Lenz and Moody, and Aujogue. The new ingredients are two additional conditions. The first condition is on the rank of the abelian group generated by the set of internal differences. The second condition is on a flow on a torus defined via the address map introduced by Lagarias. This flow plays the role of the maximal equicontinuous factor in the previous characterizations.

The manifold M is a Riemannian, boundaryless, and compact manifold with $\dim M\geq 2$, and f is a $C^{1+\beta }$ ($\kern0.3pt\beta>0$) diffeomorphism of M. $\varphi $ is a Hölder continuous potential on M. We construct an invariant and absolutely continuous family of measures (with transformation relations defined by $\varphi $), which sit on local unstable leaves. We present two main applications. First, given an ergodic homoclinic class $H_\chi (p)$, we prove that $\varphi $ admits a local equilibrium state on $H_\chi (p)$ if and only if $\varphi $ is ‘recurrent on $H_\chi (p)$’ (a condition tested by counting periodic points), and one of the leaf measures gives a positive measure to a set of positively recurrent hyperbolic points; and if an equilibrium measure exists, the said invariant and absolutely continuous family of measures constitute as its conditional measures. An immediate corollary is the local product structure of hyperbolic equilibrium states. Second, we prove a Ledrappier–Young property for hyperbolic equilibrium states: if $\varphi $ admits a conformal family of leaf measures and a hyperbolic local equilibrium state, then the leaf measures of the invariant family (respective to $\varphi $) are equivalent to the conformal measures (on a full measure set). This extends the celebrated result by Ledrappier and Young for hyperbolic Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen measures, which states that a hyperbolic equilibrium state of the geometric potential (with pressure zero) has conditional measures on local unstable leaves which are absolutely continuous with respect to the Riemannian volume of these leaves.

We prove the first orbit equivalence superrigidity results for actions of type III$_\unicode{x3bb} $ when $\unicode{x3bb} \neq 1$. These actions arise as skew products of actions of dense subgroups of $\operatorname {SL}(n,\mathbb {R})$ on the sphere $S^{n-1}$ and they can have any prescribed associated flow.

We use Gaussian measure-preserving systems to prove the existence and genericity of Lebesgue measure-preserving transformations $T:[0,1]\rightarrow [0,1]$ which exhibit both mixing and rigidity behavior along families of asymptotically linearly independent sequences. Let $\unicode{x3bb} _1,\ldots ,\unicode{x3bb} _N\in [0,1]$ and let $\phi _1,\ldots ,\phi _N:\mathbb N\rightarrow \mathbb Z$ be asymptotically linearly independent (that is, for any $(a_1,\ldots ,a_N)\in \mathbb Z^N\setminus \{\vec 0\}$, $\lim _{k\rightarrow \infty }|\sum _{j=1}^Na_j\phi _j(k)|=\infty $). Then the class of invertible Lebesgue measure-preserving transformations $T:[0,1]\rightarrow [0,1]$ for which there exists a sequence $(n_k)_{k\in \mathbb {N}}$ in $\mathbb {N}$ with for any measurable $A,B\subseteq [0,1]$ and any $j\in \{1,\ldots ,N\}$, is generic. This result is a refinement of a result due to Stëpin (Theorem 2 in [Spectral properties of generic dynamical systems. Math. USSR-Izv. 29(1) (1987), 159–192]) and a generalization of a result due to Bergelson, Kasjan, and Lemańczyk (Corollary F in [Polynomial actions of unitary operators and idempotent ultrafilters. Preprint, 2014, arXiv:1401.7869]).

The pentagram map, introduced by Schwartz [The pentagram map. Exp. Math. 1(1) (1992), 71–81], is a dynamical system on the moduli space of polygons in the projective plane. Its real and complex dynamics have been explored in detail. We study the pentagram map over an arbitrary algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to 2. We prove that the pentagram map on twisted polygons is a discrete integrable system, in the sense of algebraic complete integrability: the pentagram map is birational to a self-map of a family of abelian varieties. This generalizes Soloviev’s proof of complex integrability [F. Soloviev. Integrability of the pentagram map. Duke Math. J. 162(15) (2013), 2815–2853]. In the course of the proof, we construct the moduli space of twisted n-gons, derive formulas for the pentagram map, and calculate the Lax representation by characteristic-independent methods.

We prove an explicit characterization of the points in Thurston’s Master Teapot, which can be implemented algorithmically to test whether a point in $\mathbb {C}\times \mathbb {R}$ belongs to the complement of the Master Teapot. As an application, we show that the intersection of the Master Teapot with the unit cylinder is not symmetrical under reflection through the plane that is the product of the imaginary axis of $\mathbb {C}$ and $\mathbb {R}$.

Let $u_{X}^{t}$ be a unipotent flow on $X=\mathrm {SO}(n,1)/\Gamma $, $u_{Y}^{t}$ be a unipotent flow on $Y=G/\Gamma ^{\prime }$. Let $\tilde {u}_{X}^{t}$, $\tilde {u}_{Y}^{t}$ be time changes of $u_{X}^{t}$, $u_{Y}^{t}$, respectively. We show the disjointness (in the sense of Furstenberg) between $u_{X}^{t}$ and $\tilde {u}_{Y}^{t}$ (or $\tilde {u}_{X}^{t}$ and $u_{Y}^{t}$) in certain situations. Our method refines the works of Ratner’s shearing argument. The method also extends a recent work of Dong, Kanigowski, and Wei [Rigidity of joinings for some measure preserving systems. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 42 (2022), 665–690].

An ergodic dynamical system $\mathbf {X}$ is called dominant if it is isomorphic to a generic extension of itself. It was shown by Glasner et al [On some generic classes of ergodic measure preserving transformations. Trans. Moscow Math. Soc. 82(1) (2021), 15–36] that Bernoulli systems with finite entropy are dominant. In this work, we show first that every ergodic system with positive entropy is dominant, and then that if $\mathbf {X}$ has zero entropy, then it is not dominant.

We discuss a metric description of the divergence of a (projectively) Anosov flow in dimension 3, in terms of its associated expansion rates and give metric and contact geometric characterizations of when a projectively Anosov flow is Anosov. We then study the symmetries that the existence of an invariant volume form yields on the geometry of an Anosov flow, from various viewpoints of the theory of contact hyperbolas, Reeb dynamics, and Liouville geometry, and give characterizations of when an Anosov flow is volume preserving, in terms of those theories. We finally use our study to show that the bi-contact surgery operations of Salmoiraghi [Surgery on Anosov flows using bi-contact geometry. Preprint, 2021, arXiv:2104.07109; and Goodman surgery and projectively Anosov flows. Preprint, 2022, arXiv:2202.01328] can be applied in an arbitrary small neighborhood of a periodic orbit of any Anosov flow. In particular, we conclude that the Goodman surgery of Anosov flows can be performed using the bi-contact surgery operations of Salmoiraghi [Goodman surgery and projectively Anosov flows. Sarnak’s Möbius disjointness conjecture asserts that for any zero entropy dynamical system $(X,T)$, $({1}/{N})\! \sum _{n=1}^{N}\! f(T^{n} x) \mu (n)= o(1)$ for every $f\in \mathcal {C}(X)$ and every $x\in X$. We construct examples showing that this $o(1)$ can go to zero arbitrarily slowly. In fact, our methods yield a more general result, where in lieu of $\mu (n)$, one can put any bounded sequence $a_{n}$ such that the Cesàro mean of the corresponding sequence of absolute values does not tend to zero. Moreover, in our construction, the choice of x depends on the sequence $a_{n}$ but $(X,T)$ does not.

We derive upper and lower bounds for the Assouad and lower dimensions of self-affine measures in $\mathbb {R}^d$ generated by diagonal matrices and satisfying suitable separation conditions. The upper and lower bounds always coincide for $d=2,3$, yielding precise explicit formulae for those dimensions. Moreover, there are easy-to-check conditions guaranteeing that the bounds coincide for $d \geqslant 4$. An interesting consequence of our results is that there can be a ‘dimension gap’ for such self-affine constructions, even in the plane. That is, we show that for some self-affine carpets of ‘Barański type’ the Assouad dimension of all associated self-affine measures strictly exceeds the Assouad dimension of the carpet by some fixed $\delta>0$ depending only on the carpet. We also provide examples of self-affine carpets of ‘Barański type’ where there is no dimension gap and in fact the Assouad dimension of the carpet is equal to the Assouad dimension of a carefully chosen self-affine measure.

In this work, we study the entropies of subsystems of shifts of finite type (SFTs) and sofic shifts on countable amenable groups. We prove that for any countable amenable group G, if X is a G-SFT with positive topological entropy $h(X)> 0$, then the entropies of the SFT subsystems of X are dense in the interval $[0, h(X)]$. In fact, we prove a ‘relative’ version of the same result: if X is a G-SFT and $Y \subset X$ is a subshift such that $h(Y) < h(X)$, then the entropies of the SFTs Z for which $Y \subset Z \subset X$ are dense in $[h(Y), h(X)]$. We also establish analogous results for sofic G-shifts.

In this paper, we focus on dynamical properties of (real) convex projective surfaces. Our main theorem provides an asymptotic formula for the number of free homotopy classes with roughly the same renormalized Hilbert length for two distinct convex real projective structures. The correlation number in this asymptotic formula is characterized in terms of their Manhattan curve. We show that the correlation number is not uniformly bounded away from zero on the space of pairs of hyperbolic surfaces, answering a question of Schwartz and Sharp. In contrast, we provide examples of diverging sequences, defined via cubic rays, along which the correlation number stays larger than a uniform strictly positive constant. In the last section, we extend the correlation theorem to Hitchin representations.

In this paper, we investigate pigeonhole statistics for the fractional parts of the sequence $\sqrt {n}$. Namely, we partition the unit circle $ \mathbb {T} = \mathbb {R}/\mathbb {Z}$ into N intervals and show that the proportion of intervals containing exactly j points of the sequence $(\sqrt {n} + \mathbb {Z})_{n=1}^N$ converges in the limit as $N \to \infty $. More generally, we investigate how the limiting distribution of the first $sN$ points of the sequence varies with the parameter $s \geq 0$. A natural way to examine this is via point processes—random measures on $[0,\infty )$ which represent the arrival times of the points of our sequence to a random interval from our partition. We show that the sequence of point processes we obtain converges in distribution and give an explicit description of the limiting process in terms of random affine unimodular lattices. Our work uses ergodic theory in the space of affine unimodular lattices, building upon work of Elkies and McMullen [Gaps in $\sqrt {n}$ mod 1 and ergodic theory. Duke Math. J. 123 (2004), 95–139]. We prove a generalisation of equidistribution of rational points on expanding horocycles in the modular surface, working instead on nonlinear horocycle sections.

We investigate dynamical systems consisting of a locally compact Hausdorff space equipped with a partially defined local homeomorphism. Important examples of such systems include self-covering maps, one-sided shifts of finite type and, more generally, the boundary-path spaces of directed and topological graphs. We characterize the topological conjugacy of these systems in terms of isomorphisms of their associated groupoids and C*-algebras. This significantly generalizes recent work of Matsumoto and of the second- and third-named authors.

We prove effective equidistribution of horospherical flows in $\operatorname {SO}(n,1)^{\circ } / \Gamma $ when $\Gamma $ is geometrically finite and the frame flow is exponentially mixing for the Bowen–Margulis–Sullivan measure. We also discuss settings in which such an exponential mixing result is known to hold. As part of the proof, we show that the Patterson–Sullivan measure satisfies some friendly like properties when $\Gamma $ is geometrically finite.

Every topological group G has, up to isomorphism, a unique minimal G-flow that maps onto every minimal G-flow, the universal minimal flow $M(G).$ We show that if G has a compact normal subgroup K that acts freely on $M(G)$ and there exists a uniformly continuous cross-section from $G/K$ to $G,$ then the phase space of $M(G)$ is homeomorphic to the product of the phase space of $M(G/K)$ with K. Moreover, if either the left and right uniformities on G coincide or G is isomorphic to a semidirect product $G/K\ltimes K$ , we also recover the action, in the latter case extending a result of Kechris and Sokić. As an application, we show that the phase space of $M(G)$ for any totally disconnected locally compact Polish group G with a normal open compact subgroup is homeomorphic to a finite set, the Cantor set $2^{\mathbb {N}}$ , $M(\mathbb {Z})$ , or $M(\mathbb {Z})\times 2^{\mathbb {N}}.$

We show that the image of a subshift X under various injective morphisms of symbolic algebraic varieties over monoid universes with algebraic variety alphabets is a subshift of finite type, respectively a sofic subshift, if and only if so is X. Similarly, let G be a countable monoid and let A, B be Artinian modules over a ring. We prove that for every closed subshift submodule $\Sigma \subset A^G$ and every injective G-equivariant uniformly continuous module homomorphism $\tau \colon \! \Sigma \to B^G$, a subshift $\Delta \subset \Sigma $ is of finite type, respectively sofic, if and only if so is the image $\tau (\Delta )$. Generalizations for admissible group cellular automata over admissible Artinian group structure alphabets are also obtained.

Furstenberg–Zimmer structure theory refers to the extension of the dichotomy between the compact and weakly mixing parts of a measure-preserving dynamical system and the algebraic and geometric descriptions of such parts to a conditional setting, where such dichotomy is established relative to a factor and conditional analogs of those algebraic and geometric descriptions are sought. Although the unconditional dichotomy and the characterizations are known for arbitrary systems, the relative situation is understood under certain countability and separability hypotheses on the underlying groups and spaces. The aim of this article is to remove these restrictions in the relative situation and establish a Furstenberg–Zimmer structure theory in full generality. As an independent byproduct, we establish a connection between the relative analysis of systems in ergodic theory and the internal logic in certain Boolean topoi.
