By an r-graph, we mean a finite set V of elements called vertices and a collection of some of the r-subsets of V called edges with the property that each vertex is incident with at least one edge. An A-chromatic r-graph is an r-graph all of whose edges are coloured A.

Theorem. Let G1, …, Gt denote r-graphs. There exists a nonempty class of r-graphs such that for each if the edges of G are painted arbitrarily in t colours A1, …, At, then for at least one i in {1, …, t}, G has an Ai-chromatic r-subgraph which is isomorphic to Gi.

It is known that every torsion-free soluble group G of finite Hirsch number hG is countable, and its homological and cohomological dimensions over the integers and rationals satisfy the inequalities

We prove that G must be finitely generated if the equality hG = cdQG holds. Moreover, we show that if G is a countable soluble group of finite Hirsch number, but not necessarily torsion-free, and if hG = cdQG, then hḠ = cdQḠ for every homomorphic image Ḡ of G.

We study here the smoothness of solutions of the Dirichlet problem for elliptic equations in a region G with a piece-wise smooth boundary. The smoothness of the solution given depends on the smoothness of the coefficients of the equation, the boundary, the boundary function and the values of the angles on the boundary and the values of the coefficients of the second derivatives at the corners.

Various weighted ${{l}_{p}}$-norm inequalities in convolutions are derived by a simple and general principle whose ${{l}_{2}}$ version was obtained by using the theory of reproducing kernels. Applications to the Riemann zeta function and a difference equation are also considered.

It is known that every Toeplitz matrix $T$ enjoys a circulant and skew circulant splitting (denoted $\text{CSCS}$) i.e., $T=C-S$ a circulant matrix and $S$ a skew circulant matrix. Based on the variant of such a splitting (also referred to as $\text{CSCS}$), we first develop classical $\text{CSCS}$ iterative methods and then introduce shifted $\text{CSCS}$ iterative methods for solving hermitian positive definite Toeplitz systems in this paper. The convergence of each method is analyzed. Numerical experiments show that the classical $\text{CSCS}$ iterative methods work slightly better than the Gauss–Seidel $(\text{GS})$ iterative methods if the $\text{CSCS}$ is convergent, and that there is always a constant $\alpha $ such that the shifted $\text{CSCS}$ iteration converges much faster than the Gauss–Seidel iteration, no matter whether the $\text{CSCS}$ itself is convergent or not.

As a corollary to this proof we derive a formula for the sum of the nth powers of the divisors of m in terms of partitions of m.

In this paper we show that two minimal hypersurfaces in a manifold with positive Ricci curvature must intersect. This is then generalized to show that in manifolds with positive Ricci curvature in the integral sense two minimal hypersurfaces must be close to each other. We also show what happens if a manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature admits two nonintersecting minimal hypersurfaces.

A graph is a collection of nodes some pairs of which are joined by a single edge. A k-path, or a path of length k, is a sequence of nodes {p1 p2,… Pk+1} such that Pi is joined to pi+1 for 1 ≤i≤k; we assume the nodes are distinct except that p1 and pk+1 may be the same in which case we call the path a k-cycle or a cycle of length k. (Notice that two nodes joined by an edge determine a 2-cycle according to this definition; it will also be convenient to regard a single node as a 1-cycle.) A spanning path or cycle is one that involves every node of the graph. One of the unsolved problems of graph theory is to characterize those graphs that have a spanning path or cycle.

Pn will denote a set of n points in the plane. A well known theorem of Gallai- Sylvester (see e.g. [4]) states that if the points of Pn do not all lie on a line then they always determine an ordinary line, i.e. a line which goes through precisely two of the points of Pn.

Using this theorem I proved that if the points do not all lie on a line, they determine at least n lines. I conjectured that if n>n0 and no n—1 points of Pn are on a line, they determine at least 2n-4 lines. This conjecture was proved by Kelly and Moser [3], who, in fact, proved the following more general result: Let Pn be such that at most n—k of its points are collinear.

In a recent note in this Bulletin [3], W.A.J. Luxemburg has shown in two different ways that a condition of Krein and Krasnosel'skii [2] for the uniqueness of solutions of a differential equation also implies the convergence of the successive approximations. Here, a third proof of the uniqueness and the convergence of successive approximations, formulated for systems of differential equations, will be obtained. This third proof is modelled on the methods used in proving general uniqueness and convergence theorems [l]. The approach is suggested by Luxemburg's idea of breaking the argument into two stages and using one of the hypotheses in each stage. Since the proofs given here are hardly shorter than the earlier direct proofs, their main interest lies in the fact that they fit what appeared to be an isolated result into the framework of a general theory.

We establish a mixed norm estimate for the Radon transform in ${{\mathbb{R}}^{2}}$ when the set of directions has fractional dimension. This estimate is used to prove a result about an exceptional set of directions connected with projections of planar sets. That leads to a conjecture analogous to a well-known conjecture of Furstenberg.

We give three new partition theorems of the classical Rogers-Ramanujan type which are very much in the style of MacMahon. These are a continuation of four theorems of the same kind given recently by the second author. One of these new theorems, very similar to one of the original Rogers-Ramanuj an - MacMahon type theorems is as follows: Let C(n) denote the number of partitions of n into parts congruent to ±2, ± 3, ±4, ± 5, ±6, ±7 (mod 20). Let D(n) denote the number of partitions of n of the form n = b1 + b2 + … + bt, where bt ≧ 2, bt ≧ bi + 1 and if 1 ≦ i ≦ [(t - 2)/2], bi - bi + 1 ≧ 2. Then C(n) = D(n).

In this paper we obtain the asymptotic expansions of the Carathéodory and Kobayashi metrics of strictly pseudoconvex domains with C∞ smooth boundaries in ℂn. The main result of this paper can be stated as following:

The purpose of this paper is to characterize positive measure $\mu$ on the unit disk such that the analytic Morrey space $\mathcal{A}{{\mathcal{L}}_{p,\eta }}$ is boundedly and compactly embedded to the tent space

for the case $1\,\le \,q\,\le \,p\,<\,\infty$ respectively. As an application, these results are used to establish the boundedness and compactness of integral operators and multipliers between analytic Morrey spaces.

We give weighted norm inequalities for the maximal fractional operator ${{\mathcal{M}}_{q}},\beta $ of Hardy–Littlewood and the fractional integral ${{I}_{\gamma }}$. These inequalities are established between ${{\left( {{L}^{q}},\,{{L}^{p}} \right)}^{\alpha }}\left( X,\,d,\,\mu \right)$ spaces (which are superspaces of Lebesgue spaces ${{L}^{\alpha }}\left( X,\,d,\,\mu \right)$ and subspaces of amalgams $\left( {{L}^{q}},\,{{L}^{p}} \right)\left( X,d,\mu \right)$) and in the setting of space of homogeneous type $\left( X,d,\mu \right)$. The conditions on the weights are stated in terms of Orlicz norm.

This note answers affirmatively a question of the author [4, p. 456], by producing an example of an integrally closed quasi-local non valuation domain of global dimension 3, each of whose overrings is a goingdown ring. Although [4, Proposition 4.5] shows that such an example cannot be constructed by means of restrained power series, an approach via the more general D+M construction succeeds.
