We establish a duality between distributive bisemilattices and certain compact left normal bands. The main technique in the proof utilizes the idea of Plonka sums.

We prove that all g-natural contact metric structures on a two-point homogeneous space are homogeneous contact. The converse is also proved for metrics of Kaluza–Klein type. We also show that if (M,g) is an Einstein manifold and is a Riemannian g-natural metric on T1M of Kaluza–Klein type, then is H-contact if and only if (M,g) is 2-stein, so proving that the main result of Chun et al. [‘H-contact unit tangent sphere bundles of Einstein manifolds’, Q. J. Math., to appear. DOI: 10.1093/qmath/hap025] is invariant under a two-parameter deformation of the standard contact metric structure on T1M. Moreover, we completely characterize Riemannian manifolds admitting two distinct H-contact g-natural contact metric structures, with associated metric of Kaluza–Klein type.

Let M be a reductive algebraic monoid with zero and unit group G. We obtain a description of the submonoid generated by the idempotents of M. In particular, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for M\G to be idempotent generated.

Let N be a nilpotent simply connected Lie group, and A a commutative connected d-dimensional Lie group of automorphisms of N which correspond to semisimple endomorphisms of the Lie algebra of N with positive eigenvalues. Form the split extension S = N × A ≅ N × a, a being the Lie algebra of A. We consider a family of “rectangles” Br in S, parameterized by r > 0, such that the measure of Br behaves asymptotically as a fixed power of r. One can construct the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function operator f → Mf relative to left translates of the family {Br}. We prove that M is of weak type (1, 1). This complements a result of J.-O. Strömberg concerning maximal functions defined relative to hyperbolic balls in a symmetric space.

M. H. Stone raised the problem ([1] Problem 70) of characterising the class of distributive pseudo-complemented lattices ℒ = 〈L; ∨, ∧, 0, 1〉 in which a* ∨ a** = 1 holds identically. Several solutions to this problem have now been offered — the first being by G. Grätzer and E. T. Schmidt [6], who gave this class of lattices the name Stone lattices. Later solutions were given by J. Varlet [11], O. Frink [4] and G. Grätzer [5]; see also G. Bruns [2].

New methods are introduced here to show that if n is a quasiperfect number and ω(n) the number of its distinct prime factors, then ω(n) ≥ 7 and n > 1035, and if further 3 ∤ n then ω(n) ≥ 9 and n > 1040.

We study the bifurcation of steady-state solutions of a scalar reaction-diffusion equation in one space variable by modifying a “time map” technique introduced by J. Smoller and A. Wasserman. We count the exact number of steady-state solutions which are totally ordered in an order interval. We are then able to find their Conley indices and thus determine their stabilities.

We consider the existence of multiple positive solutions of a nonlinear two-point boundary value problem by modifying a “time map” technique introduced by J. Smoller and A. Wasserman. We count the number of positive solutions and find their Conley indices and thus determine their stabilities.

We establish a general algebraic independence theorem for the solutions of a certain kind of functional equations. As a particular application, we prove that for any real irrational ζ, the numbers are algebraically independent, for multiplicatively independent algebraic αi with 0<|<| <1.

The tensor product G ⊕ H of graphs G and H is the graph with point set V(G) × V(H) where (υ1, ν1) adj (υ2, ν2) if, and only if, u1 adj υ2 and ν1 adj ν2. We obtain a characterization of graphs of the form G ⊕ H where G or H is K2.

Examples of hyperbolic knots in S3 are given such that their complements contain quasi-Fuchsian non-Fuchsian surfaces. In particular, this proves that there are hyperbolic knots that are not toroidally alternating.

A similarity method is used to develop a solution of the wave equation within a sector with mixed boundary conditions. In this manner the field which results from the diffraction of an incident pulse of step function time dependence is found.

In this paper a certain group with the third-Engel condition, that is a member of the variety defined by1 will be presented. Reasons for which its properties may be of interest are advanced in the present section.

We study real hypersurfaces of a complex projection space and show that there are no such hypersurfaces with harmonic curvature on which the structure vector is principal.

In this paper we prove several random fixed point theorems for multifunctions with a stochastic domain. Then those techniques are used to establish the existence of solutions for random differential inclusions. A useful tool in this process is a stochastic version of the Tietze extension theorems that we prove. Finally we present a stochastic version of the Riesz representation theorem for Hilbert spaces.

A pair of symmetric dual multiobjective fractional programming problems is formulated and appropriate duality theorems are established.

Let G be a group of order 2n and x, y ∈ G. We define the Commutator [x, y] as x−1y−1xy. Similarly, if X, Y are subsets of G, then [X, Y] denotes the sub-group genrated by all commutators of the form [x, y] where x ∈ X, y ∈ Y. Using this, we may define the lower central series of G inductively by The following results are well known.

The concept of integrals of fractional order of a function f, defined by if Reα > 0, can be extended to generalised functions in the framework of the theory of convolution of distributions. The resulting theory [2, Chap. I §5.5] is very satisfactory for many purposes but there are circumstances in which it is not suitable. Such circumstances arise in particular if it is necessary to multiply, before or after integratrion, by non-integral powers of the variable. Pointwise multiplication by fractional powers of the independent variable does not make sense in the theory of distributions.

Let P denote the set of prime numbers, and let P(n) denote the largest prime factor of an integer n > 1. We show that, for every real number , there exists a constant c(η) > 1 such that for every integer a ≠ 0, the set has relative asymptotic density one in the set of all prime numbers. Moreover, in the range , one can take c(η) = 1+ε for any fixed ε > 0. In particular, our results imply that for every real number 0.486 ≤ b.thetav; ≤ 0.531, the relation P(q − a) ≍ qθ holds for infinitely many primes q. We use this result to derive a lower bound on the number of distinct prime divisor of the value of the Carmichael function taken on a product of shifted primes. Finally, we study iterates of the map q ↦ P(q - a) for a > 0, and show that for infinitely many primes q, this map can be iterated at least (log logq)1+o(1) times before it terminates.

Some of the conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer have been verified for curves with complex multiplication by √ — 7. The L-function LD(1) of such curves at the point s = 1 is written as a finite sum of division values of p-functions and the integer property of LD(1) is proved.
