It is known that to every proper homogeneous Lorentz transformation there corresponds a unique proper complex rotation in a three-dimensional complex linear vector space, the elements of which are here called “rotors”. Equivalently one has a one-one correspondence between rotors and self- dual bi-vectors in space-time (w-space). Rotor calculus fully exploits this correspondence, just as spinor calculus exploits the correspondence between real world vectors and hermitian spinors; and its formal starting point is the definition of certain covariant connecting quantities τAkl which transform as vectors under transformations in rotor space (r-space) and as tensors of valence 2 under transformations in w-space.

Within five minutes of the start of my first meeting with Bernhard Neumann as his research student, late in 1954, he suggested the following problem to me. Let G be a group in which the cardinals of the classes of conjugate elements are boundedly finite with maximum η, say. Then the commutator subgroup G′ is finite [6], Is the order |G′| of G′ bounded in terms of n? I distinctly recall these words of Neumann: “That should provide us with a start, I think”. He was right: more than just a start, the problem has been a continuing stimulus to a study of questions in fields as far apart as permutation group theory ([7], [11], [12], [14], and some unpublished work of Peter M. Neumann) and multiplicator theory ([13], [2]), as well as attracting interest in its own right.

We consider hypersurfaces of En+1 whose position vector x satisfies Δx = Ax + B, where Δ is the induced Laplacian, and prove that these are open parts of minimal hypersurfaces, hyperspheres or generalized circular cylinders.

Consider a compact zero dimensional (profinite) monoid. While the group of units must be open, a regular D-class need not be open in the ideal it generates. This is the case if and only if the semigroup contains infinitely many copies of a certain semilattice composed of an increasing sequence of idempotents converging to an upper bound.

Using compactifications of free products, two generator compact monoids with these properties are constructed.

In the present paper, we derive transcendence measures for the numbers log α, eβ, αβ, (log α1)/(log α2) from a previous lower bound of ours on linear forms in the logarithms of algebraic numbers.

Here we mean growth in the sense of Milnor and Gromov. After a brief survey of known results, we compute the growth series of the groups , with respect to generators {x, y}. This is done using minimal normal forms obtained by informal use of judiciously chosen rewrite rules. In both of these examples the growth series is a rational function, and we suspect that this is not the case for the Baumslag-Solitar group

The definition of cyclic maps is recalled and their existence discussed. Among other things, it is shown that cyclicity of maps is closed under product and that if f is cyclic then Ωf is central.Some results of Gottlieb (1972) on homology are applied to investigate the relationship between cyclicity of maps and maps of finite order.

The theory of discrete, abstract groups, as presented in current texts, consists of investigations of various special classes of groups: it has very few completely general results. For some classes (say, for finite groups) the investigations have been extensive and successful; in a few cases (say, for finitely generated abelian groups) they have even reached a sense of completeness. The choice of some of these classes was dictated by the needs of other branches of mathematics. Many more were introduced with the view of extending the scope of certain powerful but special results, and a large part of the literature is taken up by elaborate counterexamples which mark the limits of these generalizations. In so far as one is looking for some kind of classification theory, it is immediately evident that the classes investigated were chosen by historical accident rather than by any master plan, and so far do not appear to form the initial part of a pattern which could be enlarged and completed in the future.

Kato [3] has introduced a class of operators called strictly singular operators. These operators have many properties in common with compact operators. In fact the concept of a strictly singular operator is an extension of the concept of a compact operator. Kato has proved that if X and X′ are Banach Spaces, then the singular operators of X into X′ forms a closed subspace of the space of bounded linear operators of X into X′ and if X = X′, then these operators forms a two-sided ideal in the ring of bounded linear operators on X. He has also shown that the Riers-Schauder theorem holds for the spectrum of a strictly singular operator. Gohberg, Feldman and Markus [23] have treated the same class of operators with an equivalent definition.

We shall determine in this paper groups of types Dn, E6, E7 and E8 generated by SU(3, q)'s, q odd, q > 3. These groups are defined in Phan (1975). [We shall refer to this paper as I]. Acquaintance with the results of I is assumed. The identification of groups of type D4 is similar to that of SU(n, q). We actually construct an isomorphism from the universal group of type D4 onto Spin+(8, q). This direct approach does not appear to be feasible for groups of type Dn with n ≧ 5. Fortunately Wong's recent result (1974) is applicable here. But his theorem requires that the characteristic of the field be odd; hence unlike the unitary case, we assume that q is odd and q 3. Using Wong's theorem, we proceed to show by induction that groups of type Dn are homomorphic images of Spin+(2n, q) or Spin −(2n, q) according as n is even or n is odd.

Lattices of congruences are studied in section II.6 of Cohn [2]. Papers [5] and [6] by Munn deal with lattices of congruences on semigroups and conditions under which these lattices are modular. In [4] Lallement shows that the lattice of congruences on a completely 0-simple semigroup is semimodular, giving an alternative proof of the result, due to Preston [7], that the lattice of congruences on a completely 0-simple semigroup satisfies a certain chain condition which is a natural extension to arbitrary lattices of the Jordan-Dedekind chain condition for finite lattices.

In this paper we show that whether or not a group admits a lattice-order often depends upon whether or not it possesses a set of subgroups that satisfy certain algebraic conditions. Using these techniques we are able to determine large classes of groups that can be lattice-ordered.

The aim of this paper is to continue our investigation of the Lebesgue function of weighted Lagrange interpolation by considering Erdős weights on ℝ and weights on [−1, 1]. The main results give lower bounds for the Lebesgue function on large subsets of the relevant domains.

Let W be a universal class of (not necessarily associative) rings and let A ⊆ W. Kurosh has given in [6] a construction for LA, the lower radical class determined by A in W. Using this construction, Leavitt and Hoffmann have proved in [4] that if A is a hereditary class (if K ∈ A and I is an ideal of K, then I ∈ A), then LA is also hereditary. In this paper an alternate lower radical construction is given. As applications, a simple proof is given of the theorem of Leavitt and Hoffmann and a result of Yu-Lee Lee for alternative rings is extended to not necessarily associative rings.

In this short note, two results on a solid, pointed, closed cone C in Rn will be given: first, C is polyhedral iff it has a finite number of maximal faces; second, for any face F of C, C* ∩ F┴ is a face of its dual cone C* of dimension n – dim F.

The near-ring distributively generated by the semigroup of all endomorphisms of Sn, the symmetric group of degree n, for n ≥ 5, is close to being the near-ring of all mappings from Sn to itself respecting the identity. In this paper, the structure of these near-rings is studied in detail. In particular, addition and multiplication rules for the elements given in canonical form are determined. A complete list of all right ideals, left ideals, right invariant and left invariant subgroups is given.

A transitive simple subgroup of a finite symmetric group is very rarely contained in a full wreath product in product action. All such simple permutation groups are determined in this paper. This remarkable conclusion is reached after a definition and detailed examination of ‘Cartesian decompositions’ of the permuted set, relating them to certain ‘Cartesian systems of subgroups’. These concepts, and the bijective connections between them, are explored in greater generality, with specific future applications in mind.

In this paper, we consider factor covered graphs, which are defined basically as connected graphs in which every edge belongs to a 1-factor. The main theorem is that for any two edges e and e′ of a factor covered graph, there is a cycle C passing through e and e′ such that the edge set of C is the symmetric difference of two 1-factors.
