Repeated improper Riemann integrals arise in a variety of contexts, and the validity of changing the order of integration is often in question. Fubini's theorem ensures the equality of two repeated Lebesgue integrals when one of them is absolutely convergent. For many years I have assumed that an analogous test is applicable to repeated improper R-integrals, since they will be absolutely convergent and therefore in agreement with the corresponding L-integrals.

Laplace transform techniques for solving differential equations do not seem to have been directly applied to the Schrödinger equation in quantum mechanics. This may be because the Laplace transform of a wave function, in contrast to the Fourier transform, has no direct physical significance. However, this paper will show that scattering phase shifts and bound state energies can be determined from the singularities of the Laplace transform of the wave function. The Laplace transform method can thereby simplify calculations if the potential allows a straightforward solution of the transformed Schrödinger equation. Suitable cases are the Coulomb, oscillator and exponential potentials and the Yamaguchi separable non-local potential.

We show that any regular pseudocomplemented Kleene algebra defined on an algebraic lattice is isomorphic to a rough set Kleene algebra determined by a tolerance induced by an irredundant covering.

A transitive simple subgroup of a finite symmetric group is very rarely contained in a full wreath product in product action. All such simple permutation groups are determined in this paper. This remarkable conclusion is reached after a definition and detailed examination of ‘Cartesian decompositions’ of the permuted set, relating them to certain ‘Cartesian systems of subgroups’. These concepts, and the bijective connections between them, are explored in greater generality, with specific future applications in mind.

Recently Orrin Frink (see [2]) gave a neat internal characterization of Tychonoff or completely regular T spaces. This characterization was given in terms of the notion of a normal base for the closed sets of a space X. A normal base for the closed sets of a space X is a base which is a disjunctive ring of sets, disjoint members of which may be separated by disjoint complements of members of . In a normal space the ring of closed sets is a normal base.

Certain integers have the property that they can be partitioned into distinct positive integers whose reciprocals sum to 1, e.g., and In this paper we prove that all integers exceeding 77 possess this property. This result can then be used to establish the more general theorem that for any positive rational numbers α and β there exists an integer r(α, β) such that any integer exceeding r(α, β) can be partitioned into distinct positive integers exceeding β whose reciprocals sum to α.

We give an explicit description of the free objects in the quasivariety of adequate semigroups, as sets of labelled directed trees under a natural combinatorial multiplication. The morphisms of the free adequate semigroup onto the free ample semigroup and into the free inverse semigroup are realised by a combinatorial ‘folding’ operation which transforms our trees into Munn trees. We use these results to show that free adequate semigroups and monoids are 𝒥-trivial and never finitely generated as semigroups, and that those which are finitely generated as (2,1,1)-algebras have decidable word problem.

The class of subexponential distributions S is characterized by F(0) = 0, 1 − F(2)(x) ~ 2(1 − F(x)) as x → ∞. In this paper we consider a subclass of S for which the relation 1 − F(2)(x) − 2(1 − F(x)) + (1 − F(x))2 = o(a(x)) as x → ∞ holds, where α is a positive function satisfying α(X) = 0(1 − F(x)) (x → ∞).

The classical notion of a two-dimensional develpable surface in Euclidean three-space is extended to the case of arbitrary dimension and codimension. A collection of characteristic properties is presented. The theorems are stated with the minimal possible integer smoothness. The main tool of the investigation is Cartan's moving frame method.

An arithmetic function f is said to be multiplicative if f(1) = 1 and f(mn) = f(m)f(n) whenever (m, n) = 1, where (m, n) denotes as usual the greatest common divisor of m and n. Furthermore an arithmetic function is said to be linear (or completely multiplicative) if f(1) = 1 and f(mn) = f(m)f(n) for all positive integers m and n.The Dirichlet convolution of two arithmetic functions f and g is defined by for all n∈Z+. Recall that the set of all multiplicative functions, denoted by M, with this operation is an abelian group.

In the list of known finite non-abelian simple groups there are infinitely many pairs of non-isomorphic simple groups which have the same order. The smallest known example of two such groups are the simple groups A8 and PSL(3, 4), of order 20,160.

We consider the Bergman spaces consisting of harmonic functions on the unit ball in Rn that are squareintegrable with respect to radial weights. We will describe compactness for certain classes of Toeplitz operators on these harmonic Bergman spaces.

We establish the existence and approximation of solutions to the operator inclusion y ∈ Ty for deterministic and random cases for a nonexpansive and *-nonexpansive multivalued mapping T defined on a closed bounded (not necessarily convex) subset C of a Banach space. We also prover random fixed points and approximation results for*-nonexpansive random operators defined on an unbounded subject C of a uniformly convex Banach space.

This is a continuation of [5] and we begin by recalling two definitions and a result of that paper which are needed here. Let be a family of functions with domains contained in a set X and ranges contained in a set Y and let be a function with domain D()= Y and range with the property for each pair of elements ƒ and g of . Since the composition operation is associative, is a semigroup if for ƒ and g in , we define the product ƒg by .

Fitting classes of finite solvable groups were first considered by Fischer, who with Gäschutz and Hartley (1967) showed in that in each finite solvable group there is a unique conjugacy class of “-injectors”, for a Fitting class. In general the behaviour of Fitting classes and injectors seems somewhat mysterious and hard to determine. This is in contrast to the situation for saturated formations and -projectors of finite solvable groups which, because of the equivalence saturated formations and locally defined formations, can be studied in a much more detailed way. However for those Fitting classes that are “locally defined” the theory of -injectors can be made more explicit by considering various centralizers involving the local definition of , giving results analogous to some of those concerning locally defined formations. Particular attention will be given to the subgroup B() defined by where the set {(p)} of Fitting classes locally defines , and the Sp are the Sylow p-subgroups associated with a given Sylow system − B() plays a role very much like that of Graddon's -reducer in Graddon (1971). An -injector of B() is an -injector of G, and for certain simple B() is an -injector of G.

By a theorem of Fell and Tomiyama-Takesaki, an N-homogeneous C*-algebra with spectrum X has the form Γ(E) for some bundle E over X with fibre MN(C), and its isomorphism class is determined by that of E and its pull-backs f*E along homeomorphisms f of X. We describe the homogeneous C*-algebras with spectrum T2 or T3 by classifying the MN-bundles over Tk using elementary homotopy theory. We then use our results to determine the isomorphism classes of a variety of transformation group C*-algebras, twisted group C*-algebras and more general crossed products.

Weshow that, for every x exceeding some explicit bound depending only on k and N, there are at least C(k,N)x/log 17x positive and negative coefficients a(n) with n≤x in the Fourier expansion of any non-zero cuspidal Hecke eigenform of even integral weight k≥2 and squarefree level N that is a newform, where C(k,N) depends only on k and N. From this we deduce the existence of a sign change in a short interval.

We show how to use Jantzen’s sum formula for Weyl modules to prove semisimplicity criteria for endomorphism algebras of $\mathbf{U}_{q}$-tilting modules (for any field $\mathbb{K}$ and any parameter $q\in \mathbb{K}-\{0,-1\}$). As an application, we recover the semisimplicity criteria for the Hecke algebras of types $\mathbf{A}$ and $\mathbf{B}$, the walled Brauer algebras and the Brauer algebras from our more general approach.

New oscillation criteria are established for second order sublinear ordinary differential equations with alternating coefficients. These criteria are obtained by using an integral averaging technique and can be applied in some special cases in which other classical oscillation results are no applicable.
