A set of sentences T is called independent if for every . It is countably independent if every countable subset is independent. In flnitary first order logic, Lωω, the two notions coincide because of compactness. This is not the case for infinitary logic.

We characterize model polynomials that are cyclic in Dirichlet-type spaces in the unit ball of $\mathbb C^n$, and we give a sufficient capacity condition in order to identify noncyclic vectors.

Let x denote a primitive character to a prime-power modulus k = pα. The expected estimate

for the incomplete character sum has been established for r = 1 and 2 by D. A. Burgess and recently, he settled the case r = 3 for all primes p < 3, (cf. [2] for the proof and for references). Here, a short proof of the main inequality (Theorem 2) which leads to this result is presented; the argument being based upon my characterization in [3] of the solution-set of a related congruence.

Let Un be an n-dimensional subspace of C[0, 1]. We prove that if n ≥ 2, and Un contains a function which is strictly positive on (0, 1), then there exists an f ∈ C[0, 1] which has more than one best one-sided L '-approximation from Un. We also characterize those Un with the property that each f ∈ C[0, 1] has a unique best one-sided L1(w)-approximation from Un with respect to every strictly positive continuous weight function w.

We introduce a new type of differentiability, called cofinite Fréchet differentiability. We show that the convex point-of-continuity property of Banach spaces is dual to the cofinite Fréchet differentiability of all equivalent norms. A corresponding result for dual spaces with the weak* convex point-of-continuity property is also established.

Embedding theorems are employed to show that many important categories do not possess non-trivial retracts or injectives. E.g., the categories of monoids, groups, rings, rings with unity, polynomial identity rings, nilpotent groups, solvable groups, and several varieties of groups.

In this paper the notion of inverse cluster set, which was recently introduced and studied for functions by T. R. Hamlett and P. E. Long (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc, 53 (1975), 470-476), is extended to and investigated for multifunctions. We generalize the notion of inverse cluster set, extend to multifunctions and generalize some known results for inverse cluster sets of functions and offer some new results. In the latter sections, compactness generalizations are characterized in terms of inverse cluster sets and some results on connected and conectivity functions are extended to multifunctions.

In this note we present a simple alternative proof for the Bernstein problem in the three dimensional Heisenberg group $\text{Ni}{{\text{l}}_{3}}$ by using the loop group technique. We clarify the geometric meaning of the two-parameter ambiguity of entire minimal graphs with prescribed Abresch-Rosenberg differential.

Let A be an ideal of the commutative ring R with identity. There is a canonical homomorphism ϕA from the polynomial ring R[X] onto (R/A)[X], obtained by reducing all coefficients modulo A. If fR[X], then we say that f is reducible (irreducible) modulo A if ϕA(f) is reducible (irreducible) in (R/A)[X].

Under certain conditions the reduced product space JX of a space X has the same homotopy type as ΩΣX, the loop-space on the suspension of X. Several proofs can be found in the literature. The original proof [6] made unnecessarily strong assumptions. Later, in the last chapter of [3], torn Dieck, Kamps and Puppe gave a proof under much weaker conditions and showed that they could not be further weakened. The question then arose as to whether the reduced product construction could be generalized to provide combinatorial models not only of ΩΣX but also of Ω2Σ2X, Ω3Σ3X and so on. This was answered in the affirmative by May [10], using ideas of Boardman and Vogt [1], and the construction was further developed by Segal [11] and others.

The present note, however, is not concerned with these generalizations. Its purpose is to give a simple proof of the original result, without striving for maximum generality, and to show that the same method can be used to prove an equivariant version of the reduced product theorem and hence a fibrewise version. Fibrewise versions of the reduced product theorem have previously been given by Eggar [5] and, more recently, by one of us [8] but it may be useful to have a relatively simple treatment which is adequate for the majority of applications.

In this note we show that if 𝓛 is a commutative subspace lattice, then every trace-class operator in Alg 𝓛 lies in the norm-closure of the span of rank-one operators in Alg 𝓛. We also give an elementary proof of a recent result of Davidson and Pitts that if 𝓛 is a CSL generated by completely distributive lattice and finitely many commuting chains, then 𝓛 is compact in the strong operator topology if and only if 𝓛 is completely distributive.

We characterize two important notions of amenability and compactness of a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ in terms of certain homological properties. For this, we show that $\mathbb{G}$ is character amenable if and only if it is both amenable and co-amenable. We finally apply our results to Arens regularity problems of the quantum group algebra ${{L}^{1}}\left( \mathbb{G} \right)$. In particular, we improve an interesting result by Hu, Neufang, and Ruan.

The article introduces and studies Hausdorff–Berezin operators on the unit ball in a complex space. These operators are a natural generalization of the Berezin transform. In addition, the class of such operators contains, for example, the invariant Green potential, and some other operators of complex analysis. Sufficient and necessary conditions for boundedness in the space of p – integrable functions with Haar measure (invariant with respect to involutive automorphisms of the unit ball) are given. We also provide results on compactness of Hausdorff–Berezin operators in Lebesgue spaces on the unit ball. Such operators have previously been introduced and studied in the context of the unit disc in the complex plane. Present work is a natural continuation of these studies.
