Williamson’s theorem states that for any $2n \times 2n$ real positive definite matrix A, there exists a $2n \times 2n$ real symplectic matrix S such that $S^TAS=D \oplus D$, where D is an $n\times n$ diagonal matrix with positive diagonal entries known as the symplectic eigenvalues of A. Let H be any $2n \times 2n$ real symmetric matrix such that the perturbed matrix $A+H$ is also positive definite. In this paper, we show that any symplectic matrix $\tilde {S}$ diagonalizing $A+H$ in Williamson’s theorem is of the form $\tilde {S}=S Q+\mathcal {O}(\|H\|)$, where Q is a $2n \times 2n$ real symplectic as well as orthogonal matrix. Moreover, Q is in symplectic block diagonal form with the block sizes given by twice the multiplicities of the symplectic eigenvalues of A. Consequently, we show that $\tilde {S}$ and S can be chosen so that $\|\tilde {S}-S\|=\mathcal {O}(\|H\|)$. Our results hold even if A has repeated symplectic eigenvalues. This generalizes the stability result of symplectic matrices for non-repeated symplectic eigenvalues given by Idel, Gaona, and Wolf [Linear Algebra Appl., 525:45–58, 2017].

A geometric proof is presented that, under certain restrictions, the product of an h-cobordism with a closed manifold of Euler characteristic zero is a product cobordism. The results utilize open book decompositions and round handle decompositions of manifolds.

In his paper "Necessary and sufficient statistics for a family of probability distributions", Dynkin (1951) establishes the important concept of rank for such a family with this conclusion: "If the rank is infinite, then the family has no non-trivial sufficient statistic in any size of sample." His concept of rank is based on a theorem, Theorem 2 described below, which has been pointed out by Brown (1964) to be invalid under its hypotheses. This note shows that Dynkin's Theorem 2 remains valid under its original hypotheses provided that the set (in Dynkin's notation) Δ - S is countable.

A divisible abelian group D can be characterized by the following property: Every homomorphism from an abelian group A to D can be extended to every abelian group B containing A. This together with the result that every abelian group can be embedded in a divisible group is a crucial point in many investigations on abelian groups. It was Baer, [1], who extended this result to modules over an arbitrary ring, replacing divisible groups by injective modules, that is, modules with the property mentioned above. Another proof was found later by Eckmann and Schopf, [3]. This proof assumes the proposition to hold for abelian groups and transfers it in a very simple and elegant manner to modules. In the sequel, we shall refer to this proof as to the Eckmann-Schopf proof.

The definition of injectivity, and the proof that every module has an injective extension which is a subextension of every other injective extension, are due to R. Baer [B]. An independent proof using the notion of essential extension was given by Eckmann-Schopf [ES]. Both proofs require the p reliminary construction of some injective overmodule. In [F] I showed how the latter proof could be freed from this requirement by exhibiting a set F in which every essential extension could be embedded. Subsequently J. M. Maranda pointed out that F has minimal cardinality. It follows that F is equipotent with the injective hull. Below Icon struct the injective hull by equipping Fit self with a module strucure.

We prove that the least perimeter $P(n)$ of a partition of a smooth, compact Riemannian surface into $n$ regions of equal area $A$ is asymptotic to $n/2$ times the perimeter of a planar regular hexagon of area $A$. Along the way, we derive tighter estimates for flat tori, Klein bottles, truncated cylinders, and Möbius bands.

We define, as in [2], a random knock-out tournament with n players as a vector (m1, m2, …, mk) of positive integers satisfying

On the first round of the tournament 2m1 players, chosen at random, are paired off randomly; the remaining n — 2m1 players have a "bye". The m1 losers are knocked out, leaving a tournament n—m1 players with vector (m2, m3, …, mk).

A homeomorphism f of a space M is pointwise periodic if for each m ∈ M there exists an integer k such that fk(m) =m, where fk is the kth iterate of f. Montgomery proves [5] that if M is a connected topological manifold, then f is periodic; i.e., there exists an integer n such that fn = id. Noting this, Weaver [7] proves that if M is an orientable 2-manifold of class C1, U⊆M open and C ⊆ U a compact connected set and if g : U → M of class C1 is such that (i) g(C) = C and (ii) whenever the derivative of g at points x∈C has rank 2 it is orientation preserving, then f = g|c : C → C periodic implies that all but a finite number of points of C have as least period the period of f.

We show that the use of orbifold bundles enables some questions to be reduced to the case of flat bundles. The identification of moduli spaces of certain parabolic bundles over elliptic surfaces is achieved using this method.

We show that there exists a non-archimedean Fréchet-Montel space $W$ with a basis and with a continuous norm such that any non-archimedean Fréchet space of countable type is isomorphic to a quotient of $W$. We also prove that any non-archimedean nuclear Fréchet space is isomorphic to a quotient of some non-archimedean nuclear Fréchet space with a basis and with a continuous norm.

A corollary of the main result is that if L is a finite-dimensional Galois extension of a field K and if w is a valuation of L extending a valuation v of K, then K is closed in L if and only if all valuations of L extending v are dependent. A further consequence is a generalization of Ostrowski's criterion for a real-valued valuation to be henselian.

In [1] J. O. C. Ezeilo asks whether the equation

has periodic solutions for a ≠ 0. Since (1) has a two-dimensional space of solutions of period 2π if sin x is approximated by x, it is plausible to conclude, by analogy with x″ + sin x = 0, that (1) does have periodic solutions. However, when one applies the standard theory of perturbation of periodic solutions (treating a as small, see [2]), one finds that the only real periodic solutions obtainable in this manner are the trivial ones x(t, a) = nπ for some integer n.

Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of a graph decomposition of the Kneser Graph $K{{G}_{n,2}}$ and of the Generalized Kneser Graph $GK{{G}_{n,3,1}}$ into paths of length three.

In this paper we investigate the existence of positive solutions for nonlinear elliptic problems driven by the $p$-Laplacian with a nonsmooth potential (hemivariational inequality). Under asymptotic conditions that make the Euler functional indefinite and incorporate in our framework the asymptotically linear problems, using a variational approach based on nonsmooth critical point theory, we obtain positive smooth solutions. Our analysis also leads naturally to multiplicity results.

Let β(n) = ∑p|nP and B(n) = ∑Pα||nαP denote the sum of distinct prime divisors of n and the sum of all prime divisors of n respectively. Both β(n) and B(n) are additive functions which are in a certain sense large (the average order of B(n) is π2n/(6 log n), [1]).

We obtain a Bogomolov type of result for the affine space defined over the algebraic closure of a function field of transcendence degree 1 over a finite field.

La théorie de Morse décrit les liens entre la topologie d'une variété et la topologie des points critiques d'une fonction sur cette variété. La fonctionnelle d'énergie pour les applications d'une surface dans une variété, dont les points critiques seront des applications harmoniques et parfois holomorphes, et la fonctionnelle de Yang-Mills pour des connections sur une variété de dimension quatre sont deux cas en dimension infinie pour lesquels la théorie de Morse ne tient pas. Néanmois, dans les deux cas, on peut récupérer une quantité étonnante d'information, pourvu qu'on stabilise par rapport à un degré ou une charge qui sont des données du problème. Les preuves recyclent des résultats de la théorie de l'homotopie des années '70, et les combinent à des idées de géométrie complexe pour donner de jolis modèles des espaces en cause en termes de "particules". Nous espérons donner un survol général et accessible des idées utilisées.
