We present a complete characterisation of the radial asymptotics of degree-one Mahler functions as $z$ approaches roots of unity of degree $k^{n}$, where $k$ is the base of the Mahler function, as well as some applications concerning transcendence and algebraic independence. For example, we show that the generating function of the Thue–Morse sequence and any Mahler function (to the same base) which has a nonzero Mahler eigenvalue are algebraically independent over $\mathbb{C}(z)$. Finally, we discuss asymptotic bounds towards generic points on the unit circle.

Let (α β) denote the class of functions

analytic in the unit disc Δ ≡{z: |z| < 1} and satisfying

for some α, β (0 ≤ α < 1, 0 < β ≤ 1) and for all z ∈ Δ. In the present paper, sharp coefficient estimates for functions in (α, β) have been obtained. The results thus obtained not only generalize the corresponding results of Thomas H. MacGregor (Michigan Math. J. 10 (1963), 277–281), A.V. Boyd (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 17 (1966), 1016–1018) and others, but also give rise to analogous results for various other subclasses of starlike functions.

Assume that G is a solvable group whose elementary abelian sections are all finite. Suppose, further, that p is a prime such that G fails to contain any subgroups isomorphic to Cp∞. We show that if G is nilpotent, then the pro-p completion map induces an isomorphism for any discrete -module M of finite p-power order. For the general case, we prove that G contains a normal subgroup N of finite index such that the map is an isomorphism for any discrete -module M of finite p-power order. Moreover, if G lacks any Cp∞-sections, the subgroup N enjoys some additional special properties with respect to its pro-p topology.

If the finite soluble group G admits the dihedral group of order eight as a fixed-point-free group of automorphisms then the nilpotent length of G is at most three.

Let $b_{3,5}(n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ into parts that are not multiples of 3 or 5. We establish several infinite families of congruences modulo 2 for $b_{3,5}(n)$. In the process, we also prove numerous parity results for broken 7-diamond partitions.

One of the important problems of the local theory of Banach Spaces can be stated in the following way. We consider a condition on finite sets in normed spaces that makes sense for a finite set any cardinality. Suppose that the condition is such that to each set satisfying it there corresponds a constant describing “how well” the set satisfies the condition.

The problem is: Suppose that a normed space X has a set of large cardinality satisfying the condition with “poor” constant. Does there exist in X a set of smaller cardinality satisfying the condition with a better constant?

In the paper this problem is studied for conditions associated with one of R.C. James's characterisations of superreflexivity.

We generalise a result of Hilbert which asserts that the Riemann zeta-function ${\it\zeta}(s)$ is hypertranscendental over $\mathbb{C}(s)$. Let ${\it\pi}$ be any irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of $\text{GL}_{m}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ with unitary central character. We establish a certain type of functional difference–differential independence for the associated $L$-function $L(s,{\it\pi})$. This result implies algebraic difference–differential independence of $L(s,{\it\pi})$ over $\mathbb{C}(s)$ (and more strongly, over a certain field ${\mathcal{F}}_{s}$ which contains $\mathbb{C}(s)$). In particular, $L(s,{\it\pi})$ is hypertranscendental over $\mathbb{C}(s)$. We also extend a result of Ostrowski on the hypertranscendence of ordinary Dirichlet series.

For a normed infinite-dimensional space, we prove that the family of all locally convex topologies which are compatible with the original norm topology has cardinality greater or equal to $\mathfrak{c}$.

Here we derive a recursive formula for even-power moments of Kloosterman sums or equivalently for power moments of two-dimensional Kloosterman sums. This is done by using the Pless power-moment identity and an explicit expression of the Gauss sum for Sp(4,q).

We show that an essentially amenable Banach algebra need not have an approximate identity. This answers a question posed by Ghahramani and Loy [‘Generalized notions of amenability’, J. Funct. Anal.  208 (2004), 229–260]. Essentially Connes-amenable dual Banach algebras are introduced and studied.

We show that lp does not have the average distance property if p > 2. This completes the study of the average distance property for lp spaces.

We prove a general theorem on dissections of quotients of theta-functions. As corollaries, we establish six q-series identities that were conjectured by M.D. Hirschhorn:

Using the equivariant Ljusternik-Schnirelmann theory and the estimate of the upper bound of the critical value and lower bound for the collision solutions, we obtain some new results in the large concerning multiple geometrically distinct periodic solutions of fixed energy for a class of planar N-body type problems.

Let 𝒩* be a Hilbert inductive limit and X a Banach space. In this paper, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for an analytic mapping Ψ:𝒩*↦X to have a factorization of the form Ψ=T∘ℰ, where ℰ is the exponential mapping on 𝒩* and T:Γ(𝒩*)↦X is a continuous linear operator, where Γ(𝒩*) denotes the Boson Fock space over 𝒩*. To prove this result, we establish some kernel theorems for multilinear mappings defined on multifold Cartesian products of a Hilbert space and valued in a Banach space, which are of interest in their own right. We also apply the above factorization result to white noise theory and get a characterization theorem for white noise testing functionals.
