Sorptive properties of organoclays may be greatly influenced by the physicochemical properties of organic sorbates. Hexadecyltrimethylammonium(HDTMA) clays were prepared using a high-charge smectite (HDTMA-SAz-1), a low-charge smectite (HDTMA-SWy-2), and an illite (HDTMA-ILL). The resultant organoclays were used to sorb aqueous phase 1,2-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB), 1,3-dichlorobenzene (m-DCB), and 1,4-dichlorobenzene (p-DCB). Sorptive characteristics of these compounds were determined by their molecular polarities (o-DCB > m-DCB > p-DCB) and the HDTMA-clay interlayer distance. HDTMA-ILL was used for comparison to HDTMA-SAz-1 and HDTMA-SWy-2. All dichlorobenzene isomers were directly intercalated in the interlayers of HDTMA-SAz-1, causing interlayer expansion. o-DCB and m-DCB were not intercalated in the interlayers of HDTMA-SWy-2 at low concentrations, but intercalation occurred at higher concentrations, which caused interlayer expansion. The concentration needed to produce interlayer expansion depended on the solute molecular polarity, hence a higher concentration of m-DCB than o-DCB was required. p-DCB was sorbed primarily by the HDTMA phase on the external surfaces of HDTMA-SWy-2. In the presence of chlorobenzene (CB), p-DCB sorption by HDTMA-SWy-2 is greatly enhanced, owing to the interlayer expansion by CB and a cosolvent effect. Sorption of o-DCB resulted from both direct solvation-type interactions with HDTMA and partitioning into HDTMA. Such sorption results in double-sigmoid isotherms. m-DCB weakly solvates the HDTMA and partitions into the HDTMA, displaying either a double-sigmoid or a type-III isotherm depending on clay type. p-DCB lacks ability to solvate HDTMA and partitions into HDTMA as its sole mechanism, producing type-III isotherms. HDTMA-clays are potentially effective for treating dichlorobenzene-contaminated wastewater.

An orthochlorite (sheridanite) was heated to 610°C to dehydroxylate the hydroxide sheet and to oxidize ferrous iron. The heated sample was shaken for 20 min in a mixed solution of 0·2 N HCl and 0·2 N NaCl to dissolve the dehydroxylated hydroxide sheet. X-ray diffraction, thermal, infrared absorption and chemical analyses showed that the resulting product was similar to Kenya vermiculite. The procedure shows promise for the individual determination of the composition of the hydroxide sheet and of the mica layer in the chlorite structure. The experiments indicate that the hydroxide sheet in orthochlorites must be structurally disturbed before it can be selectively removed. In nature, structural disorganization of the hydroxide sheet of chlorite by dehydroxylation and oxidation of ferrous iron might occur during meta-morphic processes, and chlorite to vermiculite transformation could take place during subsequent acid weathering. In pedogenic weathering conditions it is likely that oxidation of ferrous iron plays a major role in initiation of the structural disorder required for the selective removal of the hydroxide sheet in the weathering of chlorite to vermiculite.

A new method for calculation of layer charge and charge distribution of smectites is proposed. The method is based on comparisons between X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of K-saturated, ethylene glycol-solvated, oriented samples and calculated XRD patterns for three-component, mixed-layer systems. For the calculated patterns it is assumed that the measured patterns can be modeled as random interstratifications of fully expanding 17.1 Å layers, partially expanding 13.5 Å layers and non-expanding 9.98 Å layers. The technique was tested using 29 well characterized smectites. According to their XRD patterns, smectites were classified as group 1 (low-charge smectites) and group 2 (high-charge smectites). The boundary between the two groups is at a layer charge of −0.46 equivalents per half unit-cell. Low-charge smectites are dominated by 17.1 Å layers, whereas high-charge smectites contain only 20% fully expandable layers on average. Smectite properties and industrial applications may be dictated by the proportion of 17.1 Å layers present. Non-expanding layers may control the behavior of smectites during weathering, facilitating the formation of illite layers after subsequent cycles of wetting and drying. The precision of the method is better than 3.5% at a layer charge of −0.50; therefore the method should be useful for basic research and for industrial purposes.

Sulfate adsorption on kaolinite was followed at 0.7 μeq/ml to 99 μeq/ml solution concentrations at 30°C and at pH 6.0, and the amount of OH~ ions released and the change in surface charge were determined. Sulfate was adsorbed at positive and neutral sites by displacing OH2 and OH− groups, respectively. Adsorption of sulfate occurred predominantly at positive sites at low (0.7 μeq/ml to 0.9 /μeq/ml) solution concentrations, whereas at higher solution concentrations, the proportion of the sulfate adsorbed at the neutral sites increased, varying from 51% at 4.9 μeq/ml to 68% at 99 μeq/ml. The form of sulfate bonding was apparently governed by the level of the positive charge on the clay surface. Higher positive charge at low and intermediate levels of sulfate saturation resulted in the adsorption of sulfate as a divalent anion by forming a 6-member ring with surface Al. With a decrease in positive charge at higher levels of adsorption, the sulfate ion formed both monodentate and bidentate complexes.

The first stage of lateritic weathering of pyroxenes in the Niquelandia area, Brazil, leads either to Fe-rich products or to a phyllosilicate clay. In relatively unfractured parent rock the phyllosilicate clay contains Ni-rich smectites, the atomic ratio of Ni: octahedral cations ranging from 0.3 to 0.5. These smectites were studied by polarized light microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy, and electron microprobe, and infrared, optical absorption, Mössbauer, and extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The chemical composition of the smectite is constant on the optical microscope scale even to the smallest analyzed particles (3000 A in diameter and about 75 Å thick). From XRD data the mineral is principally a swelling, trioctahedral smectite; however, some kerolite-pimelite-like layers are present, and a weak 06,33 reflection indicates the presence of a small amount of a dioctahedral phase. Mössbauer results show that all Fe cations are Fe3+ in octahedral sites. The structural formula of the smectite is: (Ca0.01K0.05)(Al0.17Fe0.5Mg0.48Ni1.47Cr0.02)(Si3.92Al0.08)O10(OH)2

The results obtained from all the above methods suggest that in the smectites Ni, and, perhaps, a small amount of Mg are clustered in pimelite-like domains (or layers), whereas Fe and some Al are clustered in nontronite-like domains (or layers). Most selected-area electron diffraction patterns exhibit continuous or punctuated (hk) rings, indicating that particles contain several stacked layers. The patterns of some thin particles, however, suggest dioctahedral layers having trans-octahedral vacancies, such as in the Garfield, Washington, nontronite. Thus, the Ni-Fe-Mg-smectite, which seemingly is homogeneous, actually consists of mixed trioctahedral and dioctahedral layers or domains.

Ferrihydrite samples having Si/Fe molar ratios ranging from 0 to 1 were synthesized by the reaction of Fe2(SO4)3 and Na2SiO3 with NaOH to an equilibrium pH of 8.2. Hematite formed by incubating the ferrihydrite (Si/Fe molar ratios ≤0.05) at pH 12.5 and 91°C for 36 hr had a globular morphology. Hematite formed from Si-free ferrihydrite gave infrared (IR) bands at 548, 471, 397, and 337 cm−1, whereas, hematite formed from Si-containing ferrihydrite having 0.001 to 0.05 Si/Fe molar ratios gave broad IR bands at about 550, 450, and 330 cm−1. Ferrihydrite having Si/Fe molar ratios ≥0.10 did not transform to hematite following the aqueous-thermal treatment.

The ferrihydrite samples were thermally treated for 2 hr at consecutive 100°C intervals from 100° to 800°C. The Si-free ferrihydrite transformed at 300°C to poorly crystalline hematite. Transmission electron microscopic analyses indicated that the hematite consisted of aggregates of spheroidal particles of 20–80 Å cross sections. Broad IR bands were observed at 529 and 452 cm−1; however, after heating the sample to 800°C, the particle cross sections increased to about 150–600 Å, and additional IR bands were present at 378 and 325 cm−1. The differences in the IR patterns of hematite formed from ferrihydrite at 300° and 800°C were probably due to increases in particle size and aggregation and improved crystallinity of the hematite particles following the higher temperature treatment. The hematite formed by the thermal transformation of the ferrihydrite having a 0.01 Si/Fe molar ratio was also spheroidal, and IR vibrations were present at about 528 and 443 cm−1. An increase in the temperature of the thermal treatment, however, did not result in additional IR bands.

Differences in the IR vibrations of hematite formed during aqueous- and dry-thermal treatments of the ferrihydrite samples were probably due to differences in the particle size and morphology of the product. The Si content, due to its effect on particle size of the precursor and the prevention of sintering and particle growth of hematite, influenced the IR pattern of the product. Particle morphology and IR spectroscopy may therefore be useful indicators of the precursor of hematite and the conditions of hematite formation in soil.

The crystal structure of natural boehmite, AlOOH, from Tveidalen, Langesundsfjorden, Norway, with a = 3.693(1), b = 12.221(2) and c = 2.865(1) Å, was refined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data (MoKα maximum 2θ = 120°) to an Rw value of 0.032 in space groups Amam and A21am. In both cases the proton was found to occupy positions of the type (x, 0.038, 0), where x = 0.104 and 0.396, about 0.75 Å from the donor oxygen atom. This arrangement corresponds to the presence of chains of asymmetric hydrogen bonds with random polarity parallel to the a axis, and indicates that the effective space group is Amam. No significant electron density was observed either at the center (0, 0, 0) or at the position (1/4, y, 0), corresponding to symmetric and bifurcated hydrogen bonds, respectively, between the layers of octahedra.

Calculations of the total energy of a representative portion of the boehmite structure as a function of hydroxyl orientation, using semiempirical molecular orbitals of the Hückel type, are in agreement with the observed electron density distribution and suggest a preference for (1) sp3, rather than sp2, hybridization of the donor oxygen atom orbitals, and (2) asymmetric, rather than symmetric hydrogen bonds. Disorder of the hydrogen atom positions within individual hydrogen bond chains is shown to be much less likely than disorder between adjacent fully coherent chains.

13C and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with magic-angle spinning bas been used to study the short-range ordering and bonding in the structures of intercalates of kaolinite with formamide, hydrazine, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and pyridine-N-oxide (PNO). The 29Si chemical shift indicated decreasing levels of bonding interaction between the silicate layer and the intercalate in the order: kaolinite: formamide (δ) = -91.9, ppm relative to tetramethylsilane), kaolinite: hydrazine (-92.0), kaolinite: DMSO (-93.1). The 29Si signal of the kaolinite:PNO intercalate (-92.1) was unexpectedly deshielded, possibly due to the aromatic nature of PNO. The degree of three-dimensional ordering of the structures was inferred from the 29Si signal width, with the kaolinite: DMSO intercalate displaying the greatest ordering and kaolinite: hydrazine the least. 13C resonances of intercalating organic molecules were shifted downfield by as much as 3 ppm in response to increased hydrogen bonding after intercalation, and in the kaolinite: DMSO intercalate the two methyl-carbon chemical environments were non-equivalent (δ = 43.7 and 42.5).

A thermodynamic study has been made of the ion exchange equilibria of the n-alkylammonium ions in sodium montmorillonite. Exchange isotherms of ammonium, methylammonium, ethylammonium, propylammonium and butylammonium with sodium montmorillonite were determined at 4°, 25° and 55°C. From these data the changes in free energy, enthalpy and entropy for the exchange reactions were calculated. In the temperature region used in this work, no enthalpy change was observed. Thus the exchange was only controlled by entropy effects. The thermodynamic excess functions were calculated from the surface activity coefficients. The affinity of the organic ions for the clay increases with chain length. It is shown that this increase can not be ascribed to van der Waals forces, but must be due to the combined effect of variations in electrostatic interactions with the clay lattice and of the hydration state.

Purified sodium bentonite suspensions in water display rigidity at concentrations as low as about 2 percent. On addition of NaCl the yield stress decreases, but beyond about 5 meq/ liter of NaCl it increases. The same is true for the relative viscosities and the sediment volumes of more dilute suspensions. This is interpreted as a flocculation-deflocculation-floccu-lation sequence. The paradoxical phenomenon of flocculation of the clean suspensions is explained by the concept of positive edge charge of the clay plates, allowing positive edge to negative flat-surface flocculation.

Both the purified and the salt-flocculated gels show Bingham flow behavior. When Good-eve’s analysis of Bingham flow is applied, the linking force between the clay plates in the pure gels is computed at about 10−4 dyne.

The salt-flocculated gels show thixotropic hysteresis, whereas the pure gels set immediately after stirring. This means that there is no energy barrier for gelation in the pure gels, which is in line with the proposed mechanism of association due to Coulomb attraction. In the salt-flocculated gels there must be an energy barrier causing thixotropic hysteresis. This might be expected from the summation of residual double-layer repulsion and van der Waals attraction. Considering thixotropic stiffening as slow coagulation, the height of the energy barrier could be calculated from the thixotropic increase of the modulus of elasticity with time after previous shear breakdown of the structure. The reasonable value of 7 kT was found for the height of the energy barrier of a gel containing 30 meq/liter of NaCl.

Hydrotalcites of high aluminum content have been synthesized from aluminate liquors of varying composition and activated magnesia obtained by calcination of hydroxide or hydroxycarbonate precursors. Lattice parameter measurements and chemical analyses of 21 synthetic hydrotalcites show that the aluminum substitution $$\left( {\rm{X = \frac{{Al}}{{Al + Mg}}}} \right)$$ for most of the products is about 0.35, which is at the maximum experimentally-observed limit of solid solubility. Pillared hydrotalcites were also prepared by molybdate, Chromate, and silicate anion replacement. A maximum distance of 10.4 Å between the brucite-like layers was observed for the Mo7O246− intercalated material.

Different changes in the structural and thermal properties of various types of talc have been reported in the literature which have made comparison of analytical results difficult. The objective of the present study was to obtain some fundamental insights into the effects of the thermal behavior of talc and to carry out kinetic analyses of the decomposition of talc under high temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) were used to study the thermal decomposition mechanism. The Coats-Redfern decomposition model was used to determine the decomposition mechanism of talc samples. The results showed that the decomposition of talc commenced at ~800°C, peaking at ~895°C, with the formation of enstatite and amorphous silica. An isothermal treatment at 1000°C caused the complete dehydroxylation of talc. The XRD and FTIR results indicated that the enstatite and amorphous silica phases were transformed into clinoenstatite and paracrystalline opal phases, respectively, after the decomposition stage at 1200°C. Good linearity in the Coats-Redfern model was observed from room temperature to 1300°C and the activation energy was calculated to be 69 kcal/mol.

Sorption isotherms for four gases (N2, A, Kr and CO2), commonly used in specific surface area and pore structure measurements, have been accurately determined on a number of clay mineral and oxide systems.

Specific surface areas obtained by application of the BET theory to these isotherms illustrate the extent to which the apparent cross-sectional areas for these sorbed gases vary with surface structure, exchangeable cation and microporosity.

V-n plots for nitrogen adsorption on these materials using nitrogen adsorption on crystalline materials of large crystal size as a standard isotherm provide appreciable ranges of linearity in each case. The specific surface areas obtained from these straight line plots agree well with the corresponding BET values. The linearity of these plots for illite clays indicates the absence of capillary condensation and that adsorption in slit-shaped pores takes place largely by the formation of physically adsorbed layers on the surfaces.

Much larger BET specific surface areas were obtained from carbon dioxide sorption at 196 K on goethite, hematite and gibbsite than from nitrogen, argon and krypton sorption at 78°K. It is suggested that enhanced sorption of CO2 into microporous regions of the oxides, inaccessible to the other gases. occurs in a similar fashion to that frequently observed for coal and charcoal materials. V-n plots for CO2 sorption in these materials using that for an illite clay as a standard isotherm, support this conclusion.

Considerably lower BET specific surface areas were obtained for CO2 sorption on kaolinite than were obtained for nitrogen, argon and krypton sorption. The shape of the V-n plots for CO2 sorption on kaolinite compared with illite suggest that an initial specific adsorption of CO2 on the kaolinite is followed by a change in state with the completion of this layer, allowing normal multilayer formation to proceed.

Clay minerals from soils of a red-black soil complex developed from basaltic parent material in Sardinia are formed along a short toposequence (200 m). At the foot of the sequence, a clay-rich, black Vertisol forms, whereas at the summit, the soil is a dark reddish-brown Inceptisol. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and permanent and variable charges analyses were used, and the data show that clay minerals varied according to soil horizon and topographic position of the soil. Clay minerals in the Inceptisol are dominated by kaolinite and mixed-layer kaolinitesmectite (K-S, K:S >0.5), whereas the Vertisol contains smectites and K-S with K:S proportions <0.5. In the Vertisol, the proportion of kaolinitic layers in the K-S increases from the C horizon (K:S ∼0.35–0.40) to the Ap horizon (K:S ∼0.40–0.45). This soil clay-mineral distribution, in relation to topography, is similar to that reported for other (kaolinitic) red-black (smectitic) soil associations in subtropical and tropical areas. The sequence forms by downward drainage on summits and slopes, and buildup of ions in ‘lows’ produces smectites. Fourier transform infrared spectra indicate that two types of smectite are formed in the C horizon of the Vertisol; one is more ferric (Fe-beidellite, nontronite), the other more aluminous. Mineralogical evolution in the soil profile (from C to Ap horizon) shows a decreasing proportion of ferric smectite layers (compared to the more aluminous smectite layers). This would indicate that ferric smectite layers are preferentially transformed (or dissolved) to give kaolinite layers, with Fe precipitating as oxides and/or oxy-hydroxides or retained partly in kaolinite layers. Because the surface properties of clay minerals are related to mineralogy, the CEC (33–41 cmol kg−1) in the brown Inceptisol is ∼50% pH-dependent charge while in the Vertisol up to ∼75% of the CEC (48–61 cmol kg−1) comes from accessible permanent charges.

Clay minerals from shale outcrops of the Lower Cretaceous Buckinghorse Formation (4250 ft thick) were investigated in order to assess their degree of diagenesis and their oil-generating potential. Crystallinity index, sharpness ratio, per cent of illite which is the 2M polymorph and presence of discrete minerals have been studied in the whole clay fraction, while the very fine clay fraction has been subjected to X-ray diffraction, differential thermal, thermogravimetric, differential thermogravimetric, i.r. spectroscopy, surface area and chemical analyses. With information derived from these studies and from published data, a classification scheme was devised which relates variation of clay mineralogy to diagenetic stages and burial depth.

Data on the < 2 μm size fraction show that the crystallinity index decreases while the sharpness ratio and per cent of illite which is the 2M polymorph increase with burial depth. Results on the <0·08 μm fraction reveal that a three-component interstratified clay mineral exists. In addition, Fourier transform calculations and chemical and physicochemical analyses indicate that both the ratio of the amounts of non-hydrated clays (illite) to hydrated clays and the K2O content of clays increase with burial depth; cation exchange capacity and surface area decrease with burial depth.

Based upon a classification scheme, which was devised by combining criteria and data derived from the studies of Weaver (1961a), Kubier (1966), Burst (1969) and Dunoyer de Seconzac (1970), the upper and middle parts of the formation (upper 3250 ft) fall within the middle stage of diagenesis whereas the lower part (1000 ft) is allocated to the beginning of late diagenesis. In terms of Burst’s (1969) work, the upper 3250 ft are transitional between the stability and dehydration zones indicating that, prior to uplift, hydrocarbons may have been in the process of migration. The lower 10000 ft of the formation are in the restricted dehydration zone, indicating that hydrocarbon migration should have been completed.

Bacteria play an important role in determining the properties and behavior of clay minerals in natural environments and such interactions have great potential for creating stable biofilms and carbon storage sites in soils, but our knowledge of these interactions are far from complete. The purpose of this study was to understand better the effects of bacteria-generated biofilms on clay interlayer expansion. Mixtures of a colloidal, 2-water hectorite clay and Pseudomonas syringae in a minimal media suspension evolve into a polysaccharide-rich biofilm aggregate in time-series experiments lasting up to 1 week. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that upon aggregation, the clay undergoes an initial interlayer contraction. Short-duration experiments, up to 72 h, result in a decrease in the d001 value from 1.50 to 1.26 nm. The initial interlayer contraction is followed in long-duration (up to 1 week) experiments by an expansion of the d001 value of 1.84 nm. The expansion is probably a result of large, biofilm-produced, polymeric molecules being emplaced in the interlayer site. The resultant organo-clay could provide a possible storage medium for carbon in a microbial colony setting.

Structural Fe2+ in montmorillonite is readily oxidized by contact with water, salt solutions or on mild heating. This is shown clearly by the Mössbauer spectra and is associated with a sharpening of the infrared absorption near 880 cm−1. It was inferred that this band comprises the Fe2+—OH—Al and Fe3+—OH—Al deformations. The rate at which oxidation occurs depends on the exchangeable cations. High acidity of the interlayers is conducive to oxidation, as is contact with Cu2+-containing solutions or concentrated H2O2 solutions.

The results show clearly that any chemical treatment of montmorillonite causes changes in the oxidation state of structural iron.

The wetting contact angle was measured for water drops settled on the surface of pressed discs of kaolinite, alumina, bentonite, marble, montmorillonite, and quartzite immersed in hexane, octane, dodecane, cis-decalin, and air. Minimum and maximum values of the contact angle were obtained for the given systems of solid-water drop-hydrocarbon, depending on the manner of disc preparation. Using both minimum (θmin) and maximum (θmax) values of the contact angle, values of the dispersion component (γsd) of surface free energy of these solids were calculated from the equation which was derived on the basis of an equilibrium state of the system solid-water drop-hycrocarbon for two different hydrocarbons. The values of γsd for kaolinite, alumina, bentonite, marble, montmorillonite, and quartzite obtained from θmin are 83.5, 98.1, 98.9, 80.2, 95.9, and 89.7 mJ/m2, and from θmax are 73.1, 85.0, 84.4, 75.8, 85.5, and 75.5 mJ/m2. These values for marble and quartzite are similar to those in the literature (marble = 67.7 mJ/m2; quartzite = 71.3 and 76.0 mJ/m2). The values of the dispersion components of surface free energy for marble and quartzite covered with a water film (γsfd) were found to be: 41.8, 36.9; 49.2, 42.5; 49.6, 42.2; 40.2, 38.1; 48.1, 42.8; and 44.9, 38.0 mJ/m2, respectively. Values of γsfd for kaolinite, bentonite, and montmorillonite agreed well with those obtained from hydrocarbon adsorption isotherms determined by differential thermal analysis (35.5, 36.5, and 37.4 mJ/m2).

Using values of γsfd and contact angles measured in the system solid-water drop-air, the nondispersion component of the surface free energy of solids with adsorbed water film (γsfn) was calculated from the modified Young equation. The values of γsfn for kaolinite and quartzite are as follows: 55.8, 69.0; 85.6, 94.0; 52.1, 75.0; 64.7, 68.9; 54.9,71.3; and 59.2,74.4 mJ/m2. The values of the nondispersion components determined for kaolinite, bentonite, and montmorillonite agreed well with those obtained by differential thermal analysis (67.6, 78.3, and 65.5 mJ/m2, respectively). Further, based on the assumption that the adsorbed water film decreased the surface free energy of these solids by the value of the work of spreading wetting, the nondispersion component (γsn) of the surface free energy of the solids was calculated to be: 86.9,129.6; 169.5, 187.7; 67.1, 144.8; 117.5, 129.3; 83.0, 135.7 and 100.2, 143.4 mJ/m2. These calculated values of the nondispersion component of marble and quartzite surface free energy agree with those obtained from adsorption isotherms determined by chromatographic and differential thermal analysis (marble = 103.8, 106.4; quartzite = 112, 115, 153.6 mJ/m2).

Characteristics and properties of complexes of a smectite (hectorite) with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) chelates with iron or copper were determined by a variety of physical and chemical measurements. The complex ions showed high selectivity for the hectorite surface. Basal spacings of 17.4 Å were produced by Fe(II) or Cu(II) analogues of M(phen)32+ hectorite. Adsorption of gases and vapors by the M(phen)32+ hectorite complex revealed large surface areas and reflected intrinsic characteristics of the complex ions. Lower surface areas were found for copper phen hectorite than iron phen hectorite probably because of the loss of a ligand from the Cu(II) ion. ESR spectra confirmed that appreciable Cu(II) existed as the bis-phen complex under certain conditions. An increase in the oxidation potential of the Fe(phen)32+-Fe(phen)33+ couple above that in pure solvent was noted when these complexes were supported by the mineral surface.

Dilute aqueous solutions of quinoline were contacted with Na-montmorillonite to elucidate the sorption process of the neutral and protonated species. Sorption occurs via a combination of ion exchange and molecular adsorption and yields S-type isotherms. Exchange between the quinolinium ion (QH+) and Na can be described by means of Vanselow selectivity coefficients and a thermodynamic exchange constant (Kex). Due to the apparent adsorption of the neutral species at high mole fractions (x) of the solid phase, the thermodynamic standard state was defined as 0.5 mole fraction. The selectivity at pH ~4.95 of the QH+ species over Na (at XQH+ = 0.5) was determined to be Kv = 340. At pH ≥ 5.5 surface mole fractions of 0.5 could not be obtained without adsorption of the neutral species. This study suggests that at dilute solution concentrations quinoline is sorbed preferentially as the cation even at pHs ≫ pKa. A critical surface-solution concentration is apparently necessary for adsorption of the neutral species.
