The size of quaternary ${\text{NH}}_4^{+}$ cations defines their packing configurations in the interlayers and the basal spacings of organoclays, and hence strongly influences the sorptive properties of organoclays. A series of organoclays (TAA-SACs) was prepared from a smectite (SAC) fully exchanged with symmetrical tetraalkylammonium (TAA) cations of progressively increasing sizes with the carbon number of single alkyl group from 1 to 6. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated the packing configurations of monolayer, monolayer-to-bilayer transition, bilayer, and bilayer-to-trilayer transition in the interlayers of SAC. Calculations of the interionic distances between TAA ions support such packing configurations. Sorption of benzene by TAA-SACs displayed a high-low-high uptake trend and progressively weaker sorptive interactions as the size of TAA ions increased. Both the siloxane surfaces and TAA ions contributed to the overall sorption, with their relative contributions dependent on the TAA interionic distances and the basal spacings of TAA-SACs. High benzene sorption by small TAA-SAC (tetramethylammonium(TMA)-SAC) was attributed to the strong interactions between the siloxane surfaces and benzene molecules. With large TAAs, high sorption was due to the effective solute partitioning. Compared to benzene sorption, TCE sorption by small TAA-SACs (TMA-SAC and tetraethylammonium(TEA)-SAC) was less effective and displayed an abnormal trend, due largely to the lack of the siloxane surface-TCE interactions and to the stronger hydration of TMA as compared to TEA ions. The results provide strong evidence to support the use of either small or large quaternary ${\text{NH}}_4^{+}$ cations in preparation of organoclays as effective sorbents for removing organic contaminants from water.

A stable 8.4 Å hydrate of kaolinite was prepared by exchanging ethylene glycol for water in the 10.8 Å intercalate of ethylene glycol in kaolinite. The hydrate of kaolinite was characterized by XRD, FTIR and TGA/DSC. From the TGA data, one can estimate that there is 0.60 water molecule per Al2Si2O5(OH)4 units. The IR data suggest a similarity of the local environment of the intercalated water in this 8.4 Å hydrate of kaolinite and the 8.4 Å hydrate of nacrite previously described by Wada (1965).

The extent of illite/smectite (I/S) reactions is linked with quantitative measurements of shale fabric in a suite of samples from a lower Frio Formation well. Greater illitization of the I/S clays is found in laminated shales that possess a larger pore surface area/pore volume (SA/V) of 3.21 × 106 cm−1 than the adjacent massive shale lithofacies with a SA/V of 1.97 × 106 cm−1. Mean pore diameter in both shale lithologies is 0.0145 micrometers, though in the laminated shale distributions are skewed towards more smaller-sized pores. While no direct permeability measurements were made, estimates of permeability that are based on simple physical models using SA/V suggest that lower permeabilities are associated with laminated shales. The trend of greater illitization at higher SA/V values is contrary to expectations that reaction extent is enhanced by greater permeabilities, such as created by silt laminations in shale. The limitations of estimated permeabilities emphasize that porosimetry measurements of shale fabric are useful for estimating the access of material to all reaction sites, and do not just describe the effect of a few large pores that dominate permeability. Greater reaction extent in the laminated shales is associated with the accessibility of fluids to more pore space than in the massive shales.

Kaolins and clays are important raw materials for production of supplementary cementitious materials and geopolymer precursors through thermal activation by calcination beyond dehydroxylation (DHX). Both types of clay contain different polytypes and disordered structures of kaolinite but little is known about the impact of the layer stacking of dioctahedral 1:1 layer silicates on optimum thermal activation conditions and following reactivity with alkaline solutions. The objective of the present study was to improve understanding of the impact of layer stacking in dioctahedral 1:1 layer silicates on the thermal activation by investigating the atomic structure after dehydroxylation. Heating experiments by simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) followed by characterization of the dehydroxylated materials by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) together with first-principles calculations were performed. Density functional theory (DFT) was utilized for correlation of geometry-optimized structures to thermodynamic stability. The resulting volumes of unit cells were compared with data from dilatometry studies. The local structure changes were correlated with experimental results of increasing DHX temperature in the following order: disordered kaolinite, kaolinite, and dickite, whereupon dickite showed two dehydroxylation steps. Intermediate structures were found that were thermodynamically stable and partially dehydroxylated to a degree of DHX of 75% for kaolinite, 25% for disordered kaolinite, and 50% for dickite. These thermodynamically stable, partially dehydroxylated intermediates contained AlV while metakaolinite and metadickite contained only AlIV with a strongly distorted coordination shell. These results indicate strongly the necessity for characterization of the structure of dioctahedral 1:1 layer silicates in kaolins and clays as a key parameter to predict optimized calcination conditions and resulting reactivity.

Municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash is the slag-like material produced by the incineration of municipal waste and is predominantly composed of glassy constituents, which include inherited manufactured glasses and glasses formed during incineration. Previous results indicate evidence of neoformation of well-ordered clay (illite) from glasses in MSWI bottom ash after 12 y of natural weathering. We investigated the mechanism and conditions of clay formation from glasses during natural weathering using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), experimental leaching experiments and ammonium oxalate extractions. It was concluded that the high surface area and initially high “active” Al and associated Si content predispose the ash to form clay minerals on a relatively short time scale. This work provides evidence that the composition of secondary amorphous aluminosilicate and thus, the type of clay mineral which may form, is determined by the pH of the pore solution rather than by the glass composition. Presumably alternate wetting and drying of the ash during disposal greatly accelerates the formation of well-ordered clays.

A reservoir rock is a porous geological formation in contact with 2 liquids, brine and oil. An improved knowledge of rock wettability is of primary importance to estimate the amount of crude oil in underground resources. The petroleum industries have observed that wettability contrasts in sedimentary reservoir rocks are largely correlated to the presence of clays, illite and/or kaolinite in the rocks’ intergranular space.

More precisely, the grain surfaces of illite show a preference for brine. Kaolinite preferentially adsorbs oil, which imparts its hydrophobic characteristics to the mineral surface. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, we studied the adsorption process of asphaltenes in the presence of water at the microscopic level. We demonstrate experimentally that the wettability contrasts observed in kaolinite and illite are related to structural differences between these 2 clays, and we show the role of the grain surface hydroxyls. With clay materials, the purity of the samples is the most important limitation of the quantitative use of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS).

The adsorption of the monovalent organic cations benzyltrimethylammonium (BTMA) and benzyltriethylammonium (BTEA) to montmorillonite was studied as a function of their concentrations and ionic strength. At low ionic strength the adsorbed amounts of BTMA and BTEA reached values of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the clay. An increase in the ionic strength resulted in reduction in the adsorbed amounts of the organic cations, unlike the pattern observed previously with organic monovalent cationic dyes. The reduction in adsorbed amounts of BTMA and BTEA depended on the inorganic cations according to the sequence Cs+ > Na+ > Li+, which follows the sequence of binding coefficients of these inorganic cations added. The type of the anion (that is, Cl−, ClO4−, SO42-) had no effect on the adsorbed amounts. An adsorption model which considers the electrostatic Gouy-Chapman equations, specific binding and closeness of the system could adequately simulate the adsorbed amounts of BTMA and BTEA and yield predictions for the effect of the ionic strength and concentration of electrolytes. The binding coefficient employed was K = 5000 M−1 for the formation of neutral complexes of BTMA and BTEA. This value is larger than those found for the inorganic cations but is several orders of magnitude below those found for the monovalent dyes. The binding coefficients for the formation of charged complexes of BTMA and BTEA were 20 and 5 M−1, respectively. The basal spacing of the clay did not change significantly with the adsorbed amounts of both BTMA and BTEA up to the CEC.

Organoclays were prepared by exchanging Ca2+ in a Ca2+-saturated smectite partially or fully with trimethylphenylammonium (TMPA) cations. The mechanistic function of these organoclays as adsorbents for neutral organic compounds in aqueous solution was examined. TMPA cations were found to take a random distribution on the surfaces of mixed Ca/TMPA-smectites. The presence of TMPA, and its random distribution, resulted in water associated with the clay surfaces being held more weakly. Apparently, the interspersing of TMPA and Ca2+ ions prohibits the formation of a stable network of water molecules around Ca2+. Water molecules associated with the siloxane surface in mixed Ca/TMPA-clays are removed during the adsorption of neutral organic compounds from bulk water, leaving only ∼11 strongly held water molecules around each Ca2+, as opposed to ∼58 water molecules in homoionic Ca2+-smectite. These results demonstrate that the amount of water associated with the clay surfaces and interlayers depends on the nature of the exchange cation(s), and not on the amount of available siloxane surface area by itself. We conclude that in TMPA-smectites the TMPA cations function as nonhydrated pillars, and sorption of organic solutes occurs predominantly on the adjacent siloxane surfaces, which are hydrophobic in nature. The water molecules around Ca2+ in mixed Ca/TMPA-smectites obscures some of the siloxane surfaces. This diminishes sorption capacity, in an amount roughly equivalent to the fraction of the CEC occupied by Ca2+, because organic solutes cannot displace the waters of hydration of Ca2+.

Oxidation of octahedral ferrous iron in biotite by saturated bromine water results in a loss of both octahedral and interlayer cations. The hydroxyl adjacent to vacant octahedral cation sites adopt an inclined orientation resulting in a more stable environment for interlayer cations. The only structural change accompanying these processes is a decrease in b-axis dimension which is linearly related to octahedral ferric iron content. These findings are in agreement with observations made on naturally weathered biotites.

Alkylammonium ion exchange on mixed-layer minerals gives detailed information about the variation of cation density in succeeding interlayer spaces. Three mixed layer samples from Japan (supplied by Dr. H. Kodama) were investigated. Their nearly 1:1 interstratification is based on regularly alternating high- and low-charged interlayer spaces, which are caused by a regular sequence of polar layers. The cation density in the high-charged interlayer spaces is >0.8 eq/(Si, Al)4O10. The low-charged interlayer spaces have an average cation density of 0.4 eq/(Si, Al)4O10 and heterogeneous charge distribution. The kind of heterogeneity of the Goto Mine sample differs from that of the Yonago Mine and the Honami Mine samples.

The Goto Mine specimen has a rather regular sequence of the low- and high-charged interlayers in proportions close to 0.50:0.50. The other two samples contain interlayer spaces with pronounced unsymmetrical charge distribution. The Yonago Mine sample probably has in random distribution with the polar layers about 10% mica-like layers segregated to packets of three and more layers; the ratio of high-charged interlayers to the low-charged ones is increased to about 0.55:0.45. The Honami Mine sample probably contains isolated mica-like layers or pairs of them. The proportion of the high-charged interlayers is estimated to be about 0.53:0.47 and is lower than determined by Kodama from the glycerolated sample.

The samples investigated may be considered as end-members of a series of interstratified specimens which begins with smectites with mixed-layer like charge distribution.

In order to improve our understanding of how the goethite crystal structure is affected by the incorporation of metals (and by variations in the amount of the incorporation), and to review any possible synergistic and antagonistic effects of co-metals, the present investigation focused on the incorporation of multiple (di-, tri-, and tetra-) metals, i.e. Cr, Zn, Cd, and Pb, in the goethite crystallographic structure. A series of single- and multi-metal M-Cr/Zn/Cd/Pb-substituted goethites with M/(M+Fe) molar ratios = 0.10 were prepared. The general sequence of metal entry in single-metal substituted goethites was Zn = Cr > Cd > Pb and in multi-metal-substituted goethites was Zn > Cr ⩾ Cd > Pb. Simultaneous incorporation of Cr, Zn, Cd, and Pb up to 10.5 mole % was achieved in goethite. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) techniques were employed to assess the structural characteristics of the synthesis products. Rietveld refinement of XRD data showed small changes in unit-cell parameters and Fe/M-Fe/M distances due to M substitution(s). A typical goethite-like crystalline structure remained intact, however. The unit-cell parameters were mutually, linearly correlated, though Fe/M-Fe/M distances were not, indicating that complex changes occurred at the local scale. In single-metal substituted goethites, incorporation of Cr reduced the unit-cell volume by 0.13% while that of Zn, Cd, and Pb increased it by 1.09, 3.58, and 0.56%, respectively. The changes in multi-metal-substituted goethites appeared to be the complex combination of that of the individually incorporated metals. The X-ray absorption near edge structure study of Pb-substituted goethites showed that the majority of associated Pb was Pb2+, while Pb4+ was preferred over Pb2+ in the bulk structure. Measurements by EXAFS at the Fe K-edge indicated that the Fe polyhedra contracted in the presence of Cd2+ and Pb2+, providing room for the substitution of larger cations. Measurements by EXAFS at the Cr and Cd K-edges indicated symmetric Cr/Cd polyhedra with single Cr/Cd-O distances and, at Fe and Zn K-edges and the Pb LIII-edge, indicated asymmetric polyhedra with two sets of Fe/Zn/Pb-O distances. The Zn octahedra were possibly Zn(OH)4O2, which enlarged the metal-metal corner-sharing distance to 3.86 Å. This configuration of ligands around the Zn2+ cation might occur to balance local charges. Symmetric polyhedra appeared to reduce steric strains in the structure, compared to the asymmetric polyhedra. The result was that Cr enhanced the incorporation of Zn, Cd, and Pb, while the converse was true for Zn.

If a series of rock samples with granitic composition in various stages of chemical weathering is ground in a mortar with distilled water and the pH of the slurry produced is determined, it will be evident that the pH declines as the weathering increases. This relationship can be made useful by plotting abrasion pH against some other index of weathering such as the percentage of clay mineral or the bulk density of the weathered rock. Factors controlling abrasion pH are the cations such as K, Na, Ca, and Mg and the amount of clay mineral present.

Mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) clays in lower Eocene sediments of the Texas Gulf Coast decrease in expandability with depth as found in previous studies of clay diagenesis, but at the same depth the 1/S clays from sand laminae tend to be more expandable than clays from adjacent shales. The I/S clays with greater expandability from sands collapse to phases with very low expandabilities after saturation with K. This non-ideal smectite behavior indicates that many of the expandable layers in I/S clays from sand laminae possess an illite-level negative layer charge on the structure. The Greene-Kelley Li-saturation test of the I/S clays also reveals that a considerable portion of the increased layer charge deficiency is created by tetrahedral substitution. The illitization of individual smectite layers in an I/S clay is envisioned to be a two step process instead of the single step rapid transformation implied in many earlier studies. The first rate-limiting step is the creation of sufficiently large negative layer charge in the lattice, primarily by AI for Si substitution in the tetrahedral sheet. The second rate-limiting step is the supply of K to the high-charged expandable layers. The abundance of high-charged expandable layers in I/S clays from sand laminae suggests that the K supply is influenced more by competing ions in the interstitial waters than by the absolute activity of K.

The co-absorptions of various purines and pyrimidines from aqueous solutions by Na- and Ca-montmorillonite are studied in the range of pH 1–6. The pyrimidines, thymine and uracil, which are not absorbed from solutions of these Compounds alone, are appreciably absorbed from solutions containing also adenine or 2,6-diaminopurine, are weakly absorbed from solutions containing hypo-xanthine, and are not absorbed from solutions containing purine, cytosine, and caffeine. The specific co-absorption is tentatively attributed to hydrogen-bond formation between the molecules in solution rather than to an overlapping of the molecular configurations (vertical stacking). The montmorillonite-organic associations have a basal spacing of about 12-5 Å which permits only a single molecular layer between successive silicate layers.

This investigation was carried out to study the effect of different concentrations of citric acid and glycine, which are common in freshwaters, on the kinetics of the adsorption of Hg by kaolinite under various pH conditions. The data indicate that Hg adsorption by kaolinite at different concentrations of citric acid and glycine obeyed multiple first order kinetics. In the absence of the organic acids, the rate constants of the initial fast process were 46 to 75 times faster than those of the slow adsorption process in the pH range of 4.00 to 8.00. Citric acid had a significant retarding effect on both the fast and slow adsorption process at pHs of 6.0 and 8.0. It had a significant promoting effect on the fast and slow adsorption process at pH 4.00. Glycine had a pronounced enhancing effect on the rate of Hg adsorption by kaolinite during the fast process. The rise in pH of the system further increased the effect of glycine on Hg adsorption. The magnitude of the retarding/promoting effect upon the rate of Hg adsorption was evidently dependent upon the pH, structure and functionality of organic acids, and molar ratio of the organic acid/Hg. The data obtained suggest that low-molecular-weight organic acids merit close attention in studying the kinetics and mechanisms of the binding of Hg by sediment particulates and the subsequent food chain contamination.

Well-crystallized ferrihydrite as indicated by its X-ray powder diffraction pattern and low solubility in acidified oxalate (Feo/Fet = 0.27) was formed by the oxidation of FeCl2 solution containing Si/Fe = 18 × 10−3. The crystallinity of ferrihydrites formed from the solutions containing Si/Fe > 18 × 10−3 was lowered as indicated by weaker and broader XRD lines and increased oxalate solubility. Ferrihydrites formed in the presence of silica did not give the differential thermal analysis exothermic peak between 350° and 450°C that is found for ferrihydrites prepared from the hydrolysis of Fe(III) salts. The transformation of ferrihydrite (formed at Si/Fe = 18 × 10−3) to hematite was inhibited by the presence of 1.48% SiO2 in the oxidation products.

The weathering of chlorite in hydrothermally-altered basalt was studied with XRD, TEM and electron microprobe to determine the type and orientation of secondary minerals. Optical examination indicated chlorite assemblages to have altered in two distinct microsites: one microsite near micro-fissures traversing the regolith units, and the other away from the continuous passages. In this paper, weathering mechanisms and products of chlorite present in microsites distant from the micro-fissures are reported. In all the regolith units the original chlorite grain remained intact and was pseudomorphed by secondary products. In the saprock, chlorite altered to corrensite with possible random interstratifications of chlorite and corrensite and corrensite and vermiculite. In the saprolite, corrensite altered to vermiculite. Parallelism of two axes of the products with the host indicated topotactic alteration. In the fine saprolite, vermiculite was found to alter to kaolinite via a randomly interstratified kaolinite-vermiculite stage with a high proportion of kaolinite. Goethite crystallized in between packets of kaolinite, vermiculite and kaolinite-vermiculite. Though the disruption of the crystal structure of vermiculite is necessary in its alteration to kaolinite, the reaction was such as to maintain parallelism of the c axis. The alteration of chlorite to vermiculite was characterized by the loss of Mg and Fe and minor Al, all ions considered to be lost from the brucite-like sheet of chlorite. The Fe released during the alteration of vermiculite to kaolinite is likely to have migrated to micropores to form goethite. The presence of interstratifications of the end-members of layer silicates involved in the reaction sequence suggests that interstratifications are common during layer silicate weathering in environments where space is limited and consequently solution and ionic transport passages are restrictive.

Aflatoxin contamination of diets results in disease and death in humans and animals. The objective of the present paper was to review the development of innovative enterosorption strategies for the detoxification of aflatoxins. NovaSil clay (NS) has been shown to decrease exposures to aflatoxins and prevent aflatoxicosis in a variety of animals when included in their diets. Results have shown that NS clay binds aflatoxins with high affinity and high capacity in the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in a notable reduction in the bioavailability of these toxins without interfering with the utilization of vitamins and other micronutrients. This strategy is already being utilized as a potential remedy for acute aflatoxicosis in animals and as a sustainable intervention via diet. Animal and human studies have confirmed the apparent safety of NS and refined NS clay (with uniform particle size). Studies in Ghanaians at high risk of aflatoxicosis have indicated that NS (at a dose level of 0.25% w/w) is effective at decreasing biomarkers of aflatoxin exposure and does not interfere with levels of serum vitamins A and E, iron, or zinc. A new spinoff of this strategy is the development and use of broad-acting sorbents for the mitigation of environmental chemicals and microbes during natural disasters and emergencies. In summary, enterosorption strategies/therapies based on NS clay are promising for the management of aflatoxins and as sustainable public health interventions. The NS clay remedy is novel, inexpensive, and easily disseminated.

Intercalation complexes of a Hungarian kaolinite were prepared with hydrazine and potassium acetate. The thermal behavior and decomposition of the kaolinite-potassium acetate complex was studied by simultaneous TA-EGA, XRD, and FTIR methods. The intercalation complex is stable up to 300°C, and decomposition takes place in two stages after melting of potassium acetate intercalated in the interlayer spaces. Dehydroxylation occurred, in the presence of a molten phase, at a lower temperature than for the pure kaolinite. FTIR studies revealed that there is a sequence of dehydroxylation for the various OH groups of intercalated kaolinite. The reaction mechanism was followed up to 1000°C via identification of the gaseous and solid decomposition products formed: H2O, CO2, CO, C3H6O, intercalated phases with basal spacings of 14.1 Å, 11.5 Å, and 8.5 Å as well as elemental carbon, K4H2(CO3)3 · 1.5H2O, K2CO3 · 1.5H2O, and KAlSiO4.
