Double hydroxide solids precipitated homogeneously from three laboratory-synthesized aqueous solutions that simulated mildly contaminated surface or groundwater. Over a limited pH range, precipitates formed rapidly from dissolved ions, and more slowly by incorporating ions dissolving from other solids, including highly soluble aluminous solids. The precipitates were characterized by size and shape via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), by composition via inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) of mother solutions and analytical electron microscopy (AEM) of precipitates, and by structure via powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), TEM, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. They were identified as nanocrystalline cobalt hydrotalcite (CoHT) of the form [Co(II)1-xAl(III)x(OH)2]x+(An−x/n)·mH2O, with x = 0.17–0.25, A = CO32−, NO3−, or H3SiO4−n = anion charge and m undetermined. Complete solid solution may exist at the macroscopic level for the range of stoichiometrics reported, but clustering of Co atoms within hydroxide layers indicates a degree of immiscibility at the molecular scale. Composition evolved toward the Co-rich endmember with time for at least one precipitate. The small layer charge in the x = 0.17 precipitate caused anionic interlayers to be incomplete, producing interstratification of hydrotalcite and brucite-like layers. Solubility products estimated from solution measurements for the observed final CoHT stoichiometries suggest that CoHT is less soluble than the inactive forms of Co(OH)2 and CoCO3 near neutral pH. Low solubility and rapid formation suggest that CoHT solids may be important sinks for Co in contact with near neutral pH waters. Because hydrotalcite can incorporate a range of transition metals, precipitation of hydrotalcite may be similarly effective for removing other trace metals from natural waters.

Core KM-3 at Searles Lake, California, comprises 693.4 m of lacustrine sediments deposited over the past 3.2 m.y. The lake water evolved from moderately saline, slightly alkaline, and dominated by Na, Ca, Cl, SO4, and HCO3 + CO3 to a highly alkaline brine dominated by Na and CO, ions. Sediments are chiefly muds and evaporites. Montmorillonite and illite are the principal detrital clay minerals supplied to Searles Lake at present and probably during the late Pliocene and Pleistocene.

The drill core is divided into three diagenetic zones on the basis of clay-mineral reactions. The upper zone (0-291.1 m) contains authigenic Fe-illite, Mg-smectite, K-feldspar, and analcime, which average 60–70% of the <2-μm silicate fraction of mud samples. The principal silicate reactants are detrital montmorillonite and kaolinite, which have been largely consumed. The middle zone (291.1–541.6 m) also contains authigenic Fe-illite, Mg-smectite, K-feldspar, and analcime, but they form only 20 to 30% of the <2-μm silicate fraction, and considerable detrital montmorillonite and kaolinite remain unaltered. In muds of the lower zone (541.6–693.4 m), a small amount of clinoptilolite is the only authigenic silicate mineral identified, although authigenic montmorillonite probably coexists here as well. Vitric ash is the silicate reactant, and detrital clay minerals apparently remain unaltered in the lower zone.

Diagenetic zoning reflects the pore-water chemistry, in which pH may have been the most important parameter. Sediments of the upper zone were deposited in highly alkaline lakes of variable salinity, and sinking brines with a pH of 9.0–10.0 have saturated all sediments. Sediments of the middle zone were deposited in lakes of moderate to high salinity. The pH was overall lower than in the upper zone, although it probably exceeded 9.0, at least locally, during silicate diagenesis. Moderate salinity and a slightly alkaline pH (~ 7.5–8.0) are inferred for both the lake and pore water of the lower zone.

Oxygen-isotope values of authigenic Fe-illite, Mg-smectite, and K-feldspar, and phillipsite in the upper diagenetic zone reflect a high degree of evaporative concentration and presumably of salinity. Equilibrium water values calculated for 22°C from the oxygen-isotopic composition of authigenic phyllosilicates range from −3.5 to +1.9%, averaging −1.2% (SMOW). Higher salinities are suggested for K-feldspar, for which water values range from +1.8 to +4.8%, averaging +3.4‰ The water value for phillipsite is +0.3‰ By comparison, rainfall at Searles Lake has an average δ18O value of about −9.8%, and a brine sample has a value of +4.0‰

Mud samples of the middle and upper diagenetic zones tend to be rich in Fe-illite or Mg-smectite, but not in both, indicating that the two minerals are favored to some extent by different environments. Fe-illite seems to be generally favored by oxidizing conditions and probably by a playa environment, and Mg-smectite seems to be favored by reducing conditions and an open-water environment. One strati-graphic unit of the upper zone does not fit this pattern and contains abundant Fe-illite in sediments of a deep perennial lake.

Mixtures of magnetite and goethite were formed by the slow oxidation of mixed FeCl2-AlCl3 solutions in an alkaline environment at room temperature. The compositions of the products ranged from almost exclusively magnetite in Al-free systems to goethite only at Al/(Al + Fe) ≈ 0.3. The magnetic phase consisted of a partly oxidized (Fe2+/Fe3+ < 0.5), Al-substituted magnetite. The unit-cell edge length a of the magnetite decreased with increasing Al(Al ≈ 0–0.37 per formula unit, corresponding to 0–14 mole % Al) and decreasing Fe2+ in the structure as described by the empirical relationship α(A) = 8.3455 + 0.0693 Fe2+ - 0.0789 Al. A correlation between the experimentally determined a and that calculated from the unit-cell edge lengths of end-member magnetite, maghemite, and hercynite was highly significant (r = .96) although shifted by about 0.01 Å. Mössbauer spectra showed Al to have entered preferentially the tetrahedral rather than the octahedral sites at low Al substitutions (<0.15 per formula unit), perhaps because of steric reasons. With increasing Al substitution the crystal size of magnetite decreased and structural strain increased, indicating that the structure had a limited capability to incorporate Al under these synthesis conditions. The capacity of the goethite structure to tolerate more Al may explain why goethite replaced magnetite at higher Al concentrations.

Humic acid (HA)-clay complexes are well known for their contribution to soil structure and environmental processes. Despite extensive research, the mechanisms governing HA adsorption are yet to be resolved. A systematic study was conducted to characterize the adsorption of a soil-derived HA to seven clay minerals. Clay surfaces affected HA adsorption directly due to structural differences and indirectly by altering solution pH. The following order of HA removal was obtained for the clay minerals at their natural pH: illite ≫ palygorskite > kaolinite > sepiolite > montmorillonite = hectorite ≫ talc. Removal of HA (precipitation and adsorption) by kaolinite and illite was attributed to the low pH they induce, resulting in protonation of the clay and HA surfaces. In spite of the low pH, the zeta potential for HA remained negative, which promoted HA adsorption to the protonated clay surfaces by ligand exchange. Ionic strength did not affect HA adsorption to clay minerals with low zeta potentials, indicating that charge screening is not a major mechanism of HA adsorption for these minerals, and supporting the suggestion that ligand exchange is the main adsorption mechanism to pH-dependent sites. The increase in ionic strength did, however, promote HA adsorption to clay minerals with high zeta potentials. At pH 8–9 the order of HA affinity for clay minerals was: palygorskite >>sepiolite > montmorillonite = hectorite > kaolinite > illite > talc, emphasizing strong HA interactions with the fibrous clays. This strong affinity was attributed to their large surface areas and to strong interactions with OH groups on these clay surfaces. Results indicated that HA did not enter the intracrystalline channels of the fibrous clays but suggested that their macro-fiber structure facilitates HA adsorption. The sorption of HA to kaolinite further increased in the presence of Cu2+, and the sorption of Cu2+ increased in the presence of HA, due to a number of synergistic effects. This study emphasizes the diverse effects of clay structure and solution chemistry on HA adsorption.

Smectite and zeolites were formed from a volcanic glass as the products of reaction with NaOH solution at 90°C and 100°C under atmospheric pressure. Formation conditions of smectite and various zeolites were determined by the ratio of the amounts of volcanic glass (g) to NaOH (g) in the solution. Smectite was formed under the condition that the values of weight of volcanic glass (g)/(NaOH(g)/40) are between 0.5 and 6. Fe was an important constituent of the octahedral layer of smectite.

K-bentonites of the Middle Ordovician High Bridge Group along the Cincinnati arch are characterized by interstratified illite/smectite (I/S) clays with rectorite-type ordering. Approximately 20% of the layers are expandable. They are structurally similar to I/S formed at temperatures exceeding 100°C during burial diagenesis, however stratigraphic evidence and a color alteration index of < 1.5 for conodonts in associated carbonates reveals they have never been deeply buried or subjected to temperatures greater than 80°C.

Whole-rock samples of K-bentonites contain ∼8% K2O and ∼4% MgO, whereas the <0.1-µm size fraction contains 6–7% K2O and 5% MgO. By comparison with a hypothetical parent ash, these values represent a net gain of K and Mg and a net loss of Si, Fe, Ca, and Na during post-depositional alteration. K-fixation is accounted for by a layer charge imbalance arising primarily out of octahedral substitution of Mg+2 for Al+3, indicating that the interstratification evolved from a montmorillonite precursor. The chemical characteristics of I/S layers in K-bentonites developed early during the alteration of volcanic ash to montmorillonite. Relatively high contents of K and Mg probably reflect both seawater and parent material composition at the time of formation. The composition and ordered stacking in K-bentonites was determined by the composition of the original smectite rather than by the pressure-temperature conditions of burial diagenesis.

Ash layers from Searles Lake, California, were sampled in core of drill hole KM-3, which penetrated 693 m of lacustrine sediment deposited in a playa-lake complex over the past 3.2 my. Lake water changed from moderately saline and slightly alkaline (pH ~7.5) to highly saline 2.04 my ago and to highly saline and alkaline (pH ~9.5) 1.28 my ago. As a result of brines flushing downward, the upper 291 m of sediment, spanning the past 1.28 my, contain highly saline, alkaline pore fluid. Silicic ash layers in contact with highly saline, alkaline pore fluid were first altered to phillipsite and meriinoite and then to K-feldspar and searlesite. The transformation of phillipsite and/or meriinoite to K-feldspar required more than 45,000 years and was largely completed in 140,000 years. Tephra layers in contact with moderately saline, slightly alkaline pore fluid vary from uncemented vitric ash containing minor smectite to bentonites in which glass is wholly altered to smectite, clinoptilolite, analcime, and opal. Layers with much fine tephra are more altered than the coarser, better-sorted layers. Alteration is attributed to hydrolysis in essentially a closed hydrologic system, in which the alteration of glass to smectite raised the pH, aSiO2, and (Na+ + K+)/H+ activity ratio to the level where clinoptilolite formed. Some diffusion and/ or fluid flow is, however, indicated by the loss of SiO2 during the alteration of ash layers to smectite and by anhydrite deposited during and after clinoptilolite in some tuffaceous sandstones.

Illite and montmorillonite have been compressed into cores under a pressure of 1200 atm. The structural status of these clays has been examined by means of detailed nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and by means of electron micrographs of fracture surfaces of the clay cores. The subsequent swelling behavior of sodium and calcium clay cores has been analyzed in terms of the model derived from these measurements and the specific surface area of the clay. A generalized theory for the condensation of plate-shaped particles into domains has been proposed.

Measurements of the effect of electrolyte concentration and hydrostatic suction on the swelling of sodium- and calcium-saturated clay cores indicate that diffuse double layer theory may play a significant part in determining the swelling of monovalent clay systems but not divalent clay systems.

The magnitude of the film thicknesses apparently developed in solutions as concentrated as molar and 4 M, where the condition of ideal solutions required by diffuse double layer theory is certainly not fulfilled, seems to indicate that solution uptake is increased by a relaxation of structural strains within the clay matrix on lubrication by solutions. These strains may arise from the distortion of crystals in packing during the drying process. Such relaxations which appear to occur between p F 4 and 3 could initiate the development of a gel structure.

Several montniorillonites and a nontronite were digested in hydrochloric acid at constant temperature for various periods of time. Soluble iron, aluminum, magnesium, and in two samples titanium, were determined for each digestion period. Rate of solution curves were obtained by plotting the logarithm of the percent of the residual ions against time. In general, the solution curves were straight lines or curves that could be resolved into two straight lines. From the interpretation of the dissolution curves, it was possible to determine the amount of the ions in octahedral and tetrahedral coordination. For some of the samples, the rate curves also gave the amount of iron and/or aluminum extraneous to the clay lattice. The amount of silicon in the clay lattice was calculated using the experimentally determined octahedral cations, substituted tetrahedral cations if any, and the exchangeable cations assuming 44 charges per unit cell. The distribution of cations in lattice layers indicates that the eight montniorillonites are substantially dioctahedral. Two of the samples showed the presence of iron in tetrahedral coordination while all the samples showed extraneous silicon. The presence of extraneous silicon, iron, and aluminum in purified samples indicates that formulas derived from bulk chemical analyses can be inaccurate.

The dissolution of the ions from the clay lattice determined at several different temperatures in one sample and at two acid concentrations in another sample is in agreement with chemical kinetic principles and is a first-order reaction. The rate constant for the acid dissolution reaction increased proportionately with the acid concentration.

The activation energies were determined for the solution of iron and aluminum in mont-morillonite from Polkville, Mississippi, and nontronite from Garfield, Washington, using Arrhenius’ Law. In both samples the activation energies (17 to 18 kilocalories per mole) were the same. In the nontronite sample the activation energies were identical for what have been interpreted as octahedral and tetrahedral ions.

Decomposition of complex X-ray diffraction profiles is used on well characterized (image analysis of transmission electron micrographs, X-ray fluorescence chemical analyses) diagenetic samples from the Paris basin. The simultaneous occurrence of three “illitic” phases (mixed-layer illite/smectite or I/S, poorly crystallized illite, and mica-like phase) is shown on the various diffraction peaks of the 2–50 °2θ CuKα (44–1.8 Å) range. However, because of theoretical and experimental constraints, it is easier to perform the decomposition routine in the 5–11 °2θ CuKα (17.6–8.0 Å) range. The identification (i.e., illite content and mean coherent scattering domain size) of the various phases is performed by comparing the associated elementary peak characteristics (position, full width at half maximum intensity) with simulated X-ray patterns. When available, the characteristics obtained from the various angular regions are mutually consistent; however, the precise structures of smectite and illite end-members, on the one hand, and the structure of I/S crystallites, on the other hand, are not well known. Consequently, on some angular regions, there is a discrepancy between the characteristics obtained on experimental and calculated X-ray profiles. The definition of more realistic simulation hypotheses for I/S minerals, and for other interstratified clay minerals, would make this powerful and reliable tool to describe X-ray patterns a precise and sensitive identification tool even for complex clay parageneses.

X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained from rock fragments, < 1 μm randomly oriented freeze-dried powders, and < 1 μm oriented aggregates for 11 mixed-layered illite/smectite samples (K-bentonites) that cover the range from 14 to 100 percent expandable. In all cases, 00l and hkl comparisons show no evidence of laboratory induced artifacts. Either the laboratory procedures caused no disaggregation of fundamental illite particles, or, if they did, fundamental particle reaggregation during sample preparation duplicated the one and three-dimensional structures of the illite/smectite in the original, untreated rock.

Demodulation of the 20l, 13l reflections into a two-dimensional band shape occurred with increasing percent expandable layers in illite/smectite. This result strongly supports the contention that turbostratic displacements occur at the expandable interfaces between fundamental particles, and are limited to those sites.

A comparison of the quantities measured by powder X-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM) lattice fringe image techniques for disordered crystals suggests that meaningful comparisons between the two methods can be made only if a sufficient number of images are recorded to define the statistical parameters of the disorder.

The weathering of chlorite, one of the major minerals of the host rock in the uranium ore deposit at Koongarra, Australia, was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The conversion sequence of chlorite weathering is: (1) chlorite; (2) chlorite/vermiculite intergrade (showing XRD responses to various treatments intermediate between those of chlorite and vermiculite); (3) interstratified chlorite and vermiculite; (4) vermiculite; and (5) kaolinite. This sequence may be more simply expressed as chlorite ⤒ vermiculite ⤒ kaolinite. The weathering finally changed chlorite into sub-micrometer to micrometer sized Fe minerals and kaolinite. The transformation of chlorite to vermiculite is chemically characterized by an Fe and Mg loss with a slight decrease in the Al/Si ratio. Mg continues to be released throughout the weathering. Fe minerals formed through chlorite weathering are located between chlorite and vermiculite domains (a few μm in size) at first, and then accumulated between grain boundaries, occasionally forming veins. The distribution of Fe minerals is suggestive of preferential pathways of water movement. The time-dependent nature of mineral alteration demonstrated in the present study must be taken into account for the quantitative estimation of radionuclide migration.

Ca-K.-, Na-K-, and Ca-Na-exchange isotherms on four reference smectites were studied. The electric charge on the four smectites was due predominantly to cationic substitution in the octahedral layer and varied between 90 and 122 meq/g (cmole(+)/kg) clay. The affinity of the clays for K increased with a decrease in the fraction of K in the exchange phase. The selectivity coefficients of the smectites for K increased with an increase in charge density. The effect was similar in the Na-K- and Ca-K-exchange isotherms. Charge densities on the smectites had no effect on the Ca-Na-exchange isotherm. The electrostatic attraction forces between the platelets increased with increase in charge density. The low hydration energy of adsorbed K was apparently not enough to overcome these attraction forces as the charge density on the smectites increased. Equilibrium between the low hydration energy of adsorbed K and the electrostatic attraction energies between the platelets is postulated to explain the results.

High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) examinations have indicated that three types of surface layers may exist in natural kaolinite crystals. Type 1 has the expected 7-Å surface layer as terminations. Type 2 has one 10-Å pyrophyllite-like (or low-charge beidellite-like) layer as the surface layer on one side of a kaolinite particle (i.e., the layer sequence is TOTOTO … TOTOTOT, where T stands for tetrahedral sheet, O for octahedral sheet). Some industrial-grade highly-ordered kaolinites have such a 10-Å 2:1 surface layer on one side of the crystal. The spacing between the 10-Å layer and the adjacent 7-Å layer is not expandable. Type 3 kaolinite has one or several 10-Å collapsed smectite-like layers at one or both sides of a stack, i.e., (TOT)TOTO … TOTOTOT(TOT), forming a special kind of kaolinite-smectite interstratification. This type has only been recognized in some poorly-ordered kaolinites. The surface smectite layer(s) contribute to higher cation exchange capacity (CEC) values. These 10-Å surface layers were not detectable by X-ray diffraction (XRD). HRTEM and electron diffraction examination also revealed the structural features of individual kaolinite crystals. All kaolinites (from various origins and sources) studied show C-face-centering Of non-hydrogen atoms. Defects within the layer structure are common in both well-ordered kaolinite and poorly-ordered kaolinite.

Beidellites may exist on Mars and represent intermediate alteration products; their presence would indicate different alteration environments than previously identified because montmorillonite is a low-grade alteration mineral whereas beidellite is a higher-temperature alteration mineral, and often represents a step toward illite formation. The reflectance spectra of beidellites are under study to support their orbital detection on Mars, where spectral signatures of other Al-rich phyllosilicates have been observed. Reflectance spectra of ten Al-rich smectites are presented here which include pure beidellites and Al smectites having compositions between those of beidellite and montmorillonite, and emphasis is placed here on the OH combination bands near 4545 cm−1 (2.2 μm) as these vibrational features are commonly used in the identification of phyllosilicates on Mars. Shifts were observed in the Al2OH band centers, which occur near 4590 cm−1 (2.18 μm) in reflectance spectra of beidellite and near 4525 cm−1 (2.21 μm) in reflectance spectra of montmorillonite. These are compared with the Al2OH bending vibrations observed near 941–948 cm−1 (10.5–10.6 μm) for beidellite and near 918–926 cm−1 (10.8–10.9 μm) for montmorillonite. Although the octahedral site cation composition provides the greatest influence on the vibrational energies of the M2OH groups, the tetrahedral site cation composition also influences these vibrations. Shifts were observed in the Si-O-Al bending vibrations from 552 and 480 cm−1 (18.1 and 20.8 μm) in beidellite spectra to 544 and 475 cm−1 (18.4 and 21.0 μm) in montmorillonite spectra. Gaussian modeling of the 4545 cm−1 (2.2 μm) bands led to the discrimination of four overlapping bands in each of the ten Al smectite spectra examined in this study. Shifts in the band center and area of the primary spectral band are coordinated with substitution of Al for Si in the tetrahedral sheet. This is consistent with beidellites having a greater tetrahedral layer charge than montmorillonites. The observed spectral differences were sufficiently large that these Al-rich smectites can be differentiated in orbital data of Mars. A pure beidellite-type spectrum is observed in an isolated Al phyllosilicate-bearing outcrop in Libya Montes, a region where Fe-rich smectite is common but Al-rich smectite is rare. Beidellite-type reflectance spectra were also observed in one area of the Nili Fossae region. In contrast, a variety of Al phyllosilicates were found in the ancient rocks at Mawrth Vallis, including some smaller clay-bearing regions exhibiting spectral signatures more consistent with beidellite-like than montmorillonite-like chemistry.

The reduction of hexavalent chromium species in aqueous solutions by interaction with Fe(II)-bearing solid surfaces was studied using a 0.96 × l0−3 M Cr(VI) solution and iron-rich clays with different Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratios, layer charge, and exchange properties, i.e., chlorite, corrensite, and montmorillonite. Experimental studies demonstrated that Fe(II)-bearing phyllosilicates reduce aqueous Cr(VI) ions at acidic pH. Chlorite and corrensite, owing to the high Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio, are electrochemically reactive, as rapid Cr(VI) reduction indicated. In contrast, montmorillonite showed minimum to nil reactivity towards Cr(VI). Furthermore, corrensite, which is high in both Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio and exchange capacity, adsorbs the greatest amount of chromium.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy at Al, Mg, Fe, and Cr K-edges was used to investigate the adsorbed chromium species. The montmorillonite sample, unaffected by treatment with Cr(VI) solution, displays no change at any investigated edge. Edge shape and energy also do not change for the Mg and Al spectra in corrensite, and changes are minor in chlorite. By contrast, the Fe K-edge changes both in chlorite and corrensite, and indicates an increase of Fe(III) in treated samples at the expense of pre-existing Fe(II). Cr K-edge spectra show that chlorite and corrensite sorb Cr(III), which implies its reduction from Cr(VI) in the interacting solution.

Noncrystalline aluminosilicates termed allophane and imogolite are common constituents of spodosols, soils derived from volcanic ash, and many inceptisols. The surface charge characteristics of their synthetic analogues may be used to better understand their ion retention properties. In this study, we determined the point of zero salt effect (PZSE) by potentiometric titration of allophanes with Al/Si ratios of 1.12, 1.52, and 2.04 and of imogolite with an Al/Si ratio of 2.02. We also used microelectrophoresis to determine the point of zero charge (PZC) at the particle shear plane for the same materials in CI solutions of Li, Na, Cs, and tetramethyl ammonium. The PZSE decreased with decreasing Al/Si ratio for the allophanes, but the imogolite PZSE was much lower than that of the allophane with 2.04 Al/Si. The PZC was always higher than the PZSE of the same material, especially for imogolite. The results are best explained if cations reside within the hollow tubes of imogolite. This conclusion is supported by a fluorescence study that showed that only quenchers smaller than the inner diameter of the imogolite tube could fully quench Ce-imogolite.

Possible assignments are suggested for some of the absorption bands in the 1150–400 cm−1 region of the i.r. spectra of serpentines. Polarized light was used to identify the out-of-plane vibrations in antigorites and platy lizardites and the vibrations parallel to the fibre axis in chrysotiles and fibrous lizardites. An attempt is made to correlate some known structural characteristics and the chemical composition of the serpentines with some features of the i.r. spectra.

The solubilities of HCl-treated samples of corundum, gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore in aqueous solutions at 298 K and one atmosphere pressure were determined from undersaturated and supersaturated initial conditions. Solution characteristics at apparent equilibrium were measured and used to calculate equilibrium constants (Kr) for mineral dissolution reactions:

Organic acids in the 0·01M concentration range representing amino-, aliphatic, and aromatic types present in humus dissolve 70–85 ppm Al from Arkansas bauxite at room temperature, whereas 0-03 ppm is dissolved in water. The species of Al in aqueous solution, calculated from stability data, range from Al3+ at pH 3 and lower, through Al2(OH)24+ at a maximum concentration at pH 4·5, Al(OH)2+ at a maximum at pH 4·7, Al(OH)2+ at a maximum at pH 60, to Al(OH)4- at pH 8·5 and higher. In salicylic acid an Al-Sal+ complex occurs between pH 1·5 and 8·5, and is at a maximum at pH 4·2. Solubility of Al obviously is pH dependent; also because of the vulnerability of organic acids to oxidation, the solubility and transport of Al is indirectly Eh dependent. Anions that combine with Al include OH- to form bauxite, PO43- to form lateritic phosphate such as the Bone Valley Formation, Fla., and SiO44- to form allophane or kaolin as noted in the kaolin synthesis by Linares and Huartes. Spongelike, pisolitic or oolitic structures, and mineral veins in bauxites, lateritic phosphates, and some flint clays attest to mobilization of Al in solution. Lignites and humus zones associated with latentes are a logical geologic source of these complexing organic solvents. Although Al is inherently mobile, such commonly available precipitating anions render Al relatively immobile.
