The imbibition of liquid by argillaceous rocks containing predominating kaolinite, illite, “open” illite, and montmorillonite with the use of absorption apparatus is described. Results of the following studies are given: (1) imbibition by pulverized and freely poured samples; (2) imbibition by specimens pressed (30 atm) into the form of small cylinders having a base of 100 mm2; (3) the course of imbibition by artificial aggregates of kaolin from Sedlec, Bohemia, pressed under different pressures (20, 30, 40 atm); and (4) imbibition by natural, oriented, ground, flat sections of the same samples which were prepared in the form of rectangular prisms, with a base of 100 mm2.

The constant k in the sorption equation, which is dependent on the form of clay particles and the tortuosity of pores in argillaceous aggregates under particular working conditions, has been computed. This constant has been calculated for water (polar liquid) and tetraline (nonpolar liquid).

A new quantitative diagram for identification of clay minerals by the imbibometric method has been constructed. In it, not only the time of imbibition and the qualitative features expressing themselves on the ground, flat section—such as swelling and nature of contours (Konta, 1961)—are taken into consideration, but also the area occupied by a drop of water and a drop of ethylene glycol and the wettability ratio Pegl/aq.

The structure and composition of short-range ordered aluminosilicates (SROAS) may control their affinity for organic acids with potential effects on soil organic matter stabilization. Adsorption mechanisms of model organic acids were studied to resolve the effect of Si incorporation. Adsorption of oxalic, salicylic, and octanoic acid on Al-rich (Al:Si = 3.7) and Si-rich (Al:Si = 1.4) SROAS was quantified by analyses of dissolved organic carbon using catalytic high-temperature combustion. The initial pH of 5 and 6.5 increased to 6.3–8.2 during adsorption of oxalic and salicylic acid, demonstrating hydroxyl release by ligand exchange. Minor changes in pH indicated weak interactions of octanoic acid with both SROAS. Adsorbates were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Asymmetric stretching of carboxylate groups at 1720 and 1700 cm–1, and symmetric stretching at 1430 cm–1 evinced the formation of chelate complexes for oxalic acid. An absorption band centered at 1545 cm–1 indicated partial inner-sphere binding of salicylic acid on both SROAS. Silicon-rich SROAS adsorbed 80–90% less than Al-rich SROAS, suggesting that adsorption of oxalic and salicylic acid was controlled by surface aluminol groups. Fast kinetics of oxalate adsorption on Al sites was studied by a conductivity-based stopped-flow technique. Ligand exchange proceeded at a rate constant of 3.5 s–1 (25°C), similar to solute Al complexation, with an activation energy of up to 34.1 kJ mol–1. A slow process with a rate constant of 0.13 s–1 (25°C) was attributed to diffusion of oxalate at the surface or into SROAS particles. As supported by structural characterization of Si-rich SROAS, the much lower susceptibility of Si-rich SROAS to ligand exchange relates to Al speciation. The formation of tetrahedral Al precludes its complexation by carboxyl groups.

The thermodynamic activities of ion pairs were measured electrometrically in a series of aqueous mixtures of monoionic bentonite and the corresponding chlorides. Ion exchange membranes and Ag-AgCl electrodes were used. The lyotropic order for the various cation species varied somewhat for two different preparations. The apparent relative escaping tendencies of the various cations did not correspond to that usually assumed on the basis of related phenomena: ion exchange selectivity, electromigration velocities, flocculation values or rates, etc.

The immobilization of antimicrobial drugs can be used to expand the application of antibacterial properties to consumer products. The purpose of this study was to stabilize an antimicrobial agent, levofloxacin (LVX), for sustained antibacterial activity by immobilizing the drug molecules in a layered double hydroxide (LDH) and embedded in a polyurethane substrate. As-prepared MgAl-LDH was calcined at 400°C and reconstructed with LVX for intercalation. The X-ray diffraction patterns and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy images showed lattice expansion along the crystallographic c axis upon LVX intercalation, suggesting successful loading of the drug. Fourier-transform infrared spectra revealed that the structure of LVX was well preserved between LDH layers. Elemental analysis indicated that the loading capacity of LVX in the hybrid was 41.7%. Bacterial-colony forming inhibitory assay on Bacillus subtilis exhibited ~100% antibacterial activity of both LVX alone and LVX-LDH hybrid (LL). To determine sustainability of antibacterial activity by the hybrid, either LVX alone or LL hybrid was loaded in the polyurethane (PU) substrate for which antibacterial activity was evaluated before and after immersion in a phosphate-buffered saline for 3 days. The LVX-composited PU showed a dramatic decrease in antibacterial activity, down to 0% after buffer treatment; LL-composited PU still contained antibacterial activity (~34% of colony suppression) after phosphate-buffered saline immersion.

To develop more economical and efficient heavy metal adsorbents, natural bentonite was employed as a raw material, and triethoxyvinylsilane served as a grafting agent to achieve the grafting bonding of sodium polyacrylate and bentonite. Structural alterations in the modified bentonite were analyzed through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The adsorption and desorption characteristics of SAPAS-Bentonite and raw bentonite were compared and tested under various conditions, including time, temperature, pH, and lead ion concentration. The adsorption and desorption properties of sodium polyacrylate-grafted bentonite (SAPAS-Bentonite) were compared under various conditions (time, temperature, pH, and lead ion concentration). The results revealed that the modified method successfully achieved nano-scale coating of bentonite particles with sodium polyacrylate, leading to an increase in the maximum adsorption capacity of lead ions by 47.5%, reaching 165.73 mg g. A greater adsorption affinity for lead ions was exhibited by the outer sodium polycarboxylate portion of SAPAS-Bentonite compared with the inner bentonite. The adsorption of internal bentonite was limited by blocking when the adsorption of sodium polyacrylate did not reach the upper limit. The adsorption isotherm shifted from the Langmuir monolayer characteristic of the original bentonite to the S-shaped isotherm, reflecting the sodium polycarboxylate properties of SAPAS-Bentonite. Both bentonites demonstrated strong retention capacity for lead, with SAPAS-Bentonite surpassing raw bentonite in performance. This study provides valuable insights into the potential of SAPAS-Bentonite in the treatment of heavy metal pollution.

Infrared analyses of clay mineral samples are usually performed by transmission techniques. While transmission measurements are easy and inexpensive, the sample preparation plays a critical role in the quality of the data. Alternatively, attenuated total reflection (ATR) provides a powerful and often simpler analysis method. However, the ATR spectra reveal significant differences when compared to transmission spectra sometimes leading to confusion in the interpretations. Indeed, optical effects play a prominent role in the ATR spectral profile and their identification is mandatory for obtaining quantitative information regarding molecular/particle orientation or film thickness. The objective of the present study was to perform exact spectral simulations of montmorillonite films by making use of optical theory, including the determination of the anisotropic optical constants from the experimental reflectance spectra by Kramers-Kronig (KK) transformation. This methodology was used: (1) to choose the appropriate optical conditions for advanced and reliable characterization of clay minerals; (2) to extract quantitative information such as the estimation of the film thickness; and (3) to discriminate optical phenomena (optical interferences) from chemical/structural features of the sample.

Batch data for the sorption of Eu and Th on pelagic sediments may be represented by equations of the form: ln M = A ln Cs + B/T + D, where M = concentration of sorbate on sediment, Cs = concentration of sorbate in solution, T = absolute temperature, and A, B, and D = constants. Thermodynamic interpretation of this equation leads to an expression for the true thermodynamic equilibrium constant of K = m/CsA and for the enthalpy change, ΔH, of d ln(M/CsA)/d(1/T) = −ΔH/R, where R = universal gas constant.

Experimentally, the sorption of Eu onto clay-rich sediments was very rapid in the first few seconds and slowed over an interval of minutes to hours. Rate curves were similar in shape to those of α-iron hydroxide, rather than of the oxalate-extracted residual sediment, indicating the importance of oxyhydroxide-like phases in the uptake of Eu onto red-clay sediments. For clay-rich sediments, numerical modeling reproduced the general features of a series of diffusion experiments. To a first approximation, the penetration of Eu into a sediment proceeded by saturation of the sediment to the depth of penetration and produced a sharp drop-off in sorbed + dissolved Eu concentration at the diffusion front. Higher partition coefficients (Kp) resulted in greater sorbed + dissolved concentrations, but reduced penetration. For calcareous sediments, however, Eu concentrations at the surface were much higher than at depth, presumably due to the formation of an insoluble carbonate.

The alteration of bentonite under alkaline conditions and the subsequent changes in properties such as permeability and self-sealing ability should be evaluated for the performance assessment of radioactive waste repositories. As the period of evaluation for alterations is extremely long, natural analog (NA) studies that can observe long-term phenomena similar to the system of radioactive waste repositories have significant advantages. However, locations that can be set up as NA study sites with significant similarity are limited and should be pursued by localizing analog systems. This literature review summarized studies reporting secondary phases formed at low temperatures (<100°C) under a broader range of natural sites which are chemically similar to the alkaline conditions expected at bentonite in radioactive waste repositories, including near pyrometamorphic rocks, near ophiolites, and in alkaline saline lakes. This review provides insights into the species, formation conditions, and stability of secondary phases that could be formed during cement–bentonite interactions and the timescale for mineralogical transitions from a metastable to a stable phase. The findings could be useful for selecting secondary phases to be considered in reactive transport modeling for predicting cement–bentonite interactions in radioactive waste repositories.
