The identification and quantification of the water associated with powdered clinoptilolite and clinoptilolite-bearing tuffs were made using thermogravimetric, vacuum gravimetric, and differential scanning calorimetric techniques. Inflection points on thermogravimetric curves at approximately 80° and 170°C correspond to changes in the proportions of externally adsorbed water to loosely bound zeolitic water and loosely bound zeolitic water to tightly bound zeolitic water, respectively. These three types of water can be differentiated by temperatures and heats of dehydration obtained from differential scanning calorimetry. These temperatures and heats of hydration are 75 ± 10°C and 59.2 ± 5.9 kJ/mole H2O, 171 ± 2°C and 58.7 ± 6.1 kJ/mole H2O, and 271 ± 4°C and 78.7 ± 7.0 kJ/mole H2O for external water, loosely bound water, and tightly bound water, respectively. The ratio of loosely bound zeolitic water to tightly bound zeolitic water determined in this study is similar to that reported in the literature from structural determinations, indicating that the desorption properties of clinoptilolite are determined by the specific positions of the water molecules in the structure.

The wetting contact angle was measured for water drops settled on the surface of pressed discs of kaolinite, alumina, bentonite, marble, montmorillonite, and quartzite immersed in hexane, octane, dodecane, cis-decalin, and air. Minimum and maximum values of the contact angle were obtained for the given systems of solid-water drop-hydrocarbon, depending on the manner of disc preparation. Using both minimum (θmin) and maximum (θmax) values of the contact angle, values of the dispersion component (γsd) of surface free energy of these solids were calculated from the equation which was derived on the basis of an equilibrium state of the system solid-water drop-hycrocarbon for two different hydrocarbons. The values of γsd for kaolinite, alumina, bentonite, marble, montmorillonite, and quartzite obtained from θmin are 83.5, 98.1, 98.9, 80.2, 95.9, and 89.7 mJ/m2, and from θmax are 73.1, 85.0, 84.4, 75.8, 85.5, and 75.5 mJ/m2. These values for marble and quartzite are similar to those in the literature (marble = 67.7 mJ/m2; quartzite = 71.3 and 76.0 mJ/m2). The values of the dispersion components of surface free energy for marble and quartzite covered with a water film (γsfd) were found to be: 41.8, 36.9; 49.2, 42.5; 49.6, 42.2; 40.2, 38.1; 48.1, 42.8; and 44.9, 38.0 mJ/m2, respectively. Values of γsfd for kaolinite, bentonite, and montmorillonite agreed well with those obtained from hydrocarbon adsorption isotherms determined by differential thermal analysis (35.5, 36.5, and 37.4 mJ/m2).

Using values of γsfd and contact angles measured in the system solid-water drop-air, the nondispersion component of the surface free energy of solids with adsorbed water film (γsfn) was calculated from the modified Young equation. The values of γsfn for kaolinite and quartzite are as follows: 55.8, 69.0; 85.6, 94.0; 52.1, 75.0; 64.7, 68.9; 54.9,71.3; and 59.2,74.4 mJ/m2. The values of the nondispersion components determined for kaolinite, bentonite, and montmorillonite agreed well with those obtained by differential thermal analysis (67.6, 78.3, and 65.5 mJ/m2, respectively). Further, based on the assumption that the adsorbed water film decreased the surface free energy of these solids by the value of the work of spreading wetting, the nondispersion component (γsn) of the surface free energy of the solids was calculated to be: 86.9,129.6; 169.5, 187.7; 67.1, 144.8; 117.5, 129.3; 83.0, 135.7 and 100.2, 143.4 mJ/m2. These calculated values of the nondispersion component of marble and quartzite surface free energy agree with those obtained from adsorption isotherms determined by chromatographic and differential thermal analysis (marble = 103.8, 106.4; quartzite = 112, 115, 153.6 mJ/m2).

Structural Fe2+ in montmorillonite is readily oxidized by contact with water, salt solutions or on mild heating. This is shown clearly by the Mössbauer spectra and is associated with a sharpening of the infrared absorption near 880 cm−1. It was inferred that this band comprises the Fe2+—OH—Al and Fe3+—OH—Al deformations. The rate at which oxidation occurs depends on the exchangeable cations. High acidity of the interlayers is conducive to oxidation, as is contact with Cu2+-containing solutions or concentrated H2O2 solutions.

The results show clearly that any chemical treatment of montmorillonite causes changes in the oxidation state of structural iron.

The characterization of freshly cleaved mica surfaces for surface structure and chemical composition was briefly reviewed and focused on surface crystal chemistry using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and other surface-sensitive techniques. This paper considers micas, which are useful as a first approximation for the behavior of many clay surfaces. Emphasis was given to phyllosilicate XPS binding energies (“chemical shift”), which were described and used to obtain oxidation state, layer charge, and chemical bonding information from the chemical shifts of different peaks. The chemical shift of the Si2p binding-energy to lower values can result from a negative charge increase because of Si4+ replacement by Al3+ and/or Fe3+. The apparent interlayer coordination number reduction from twelve to eight at muscovite and tetraferri-phlogopite (001) surfaces was indicated by the XPS measured K2p binding-energy and is consistent with bond relaxation. Although chemical shifts are valuable to distinguish chemical bonding and oxidation state, chemical shifts usually cannot distinguish between different Al coordination environments where Al is in both tetrahedral and octahedral sites.

Characteristics and properties of complexes of a smectite (hectorite) with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) chelates with iron or copper were determined by a variety of physical and chemical measurements. The complex ions showed high selectivity for the hectorite surface. Basal spacings of 17.4 Å were produced by Fe(II) or Cu(II) analogues of M(phen)32+ hectorite. Adsorption of gases and vapors by the M(phen)32+ hectorite complex revealed large surface areas and reflected intrinsic characteristics of the complex ions. Lower surface areas were found for copper phen hectorite than iron phen hectorite probably because of the loss of a ligand from the Cu(II) ion. ESR spectra confirmed that appreciable Cu(II) existed as the bis-phen complex under certain conditions. An increase in the oxidation potential of the Fe(phen)32+-Fe(phen)33+ couple above that in pure solvent was noted when these complexes were supported by the mineral surface.

Dilute aqueous solutions of quinoline were contacted with Na-montmorillonite to elucidate the sorption process of the neutral and protonated species. Sorption occurs via a combination of ion exchange and molecular adsorption and yields S-type isotherms. Exchange between the quinolinium ion (QH+) and Na can be described by means of Vanselow selectivity coefficients and a thermodynamic exchange constant (Kex). Due to the apparent adsorption of the neutral species at high mole fractions (x) of the solid phase, the thermodynamic standard state was defined as 0.5 mole fraction. The selectivity at pH ~4.95 of the QH+ species over Na (at XQH+ = 0.5) was determined to be Kv = 340. At pH ≥ 5.5 surface mole fractions of 0.5 could not be obtained without adsorption of the neutral species. This study suggests that at dilute solution concentrations quinoline is sorbed preferentially as the cation even at pHs ≫ pKa. A critical surface-solution concentration is apparently necessary for adsorption of the neutral species.

The acid-catalyzed reaction between methanol and isobutene to give methyl-t-butyl ether may be carried out using a cation-exchanged smectite as the catalyst. In 1,4-dioxan solvent at 60°C smectites exchanged with Al3+, Fe3+, or Cr3+ give yields of ∼60% after 4 hr, whereas smectites exchanged with Cu2+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Ca2+, and Na+ give less than ∼8% yield. The reaction is efficient only when certain solvents are used, e.g., with Al3+-smectite the yield is ∼5% when using 1,2-dimethoxyethane, diethyleneglycol diethylether, n-pentane, tetrahydropyran, N-methylmorpholine, or tetrahydrofuran solvents compared with ∼60% using 1,4-dioxan solvent (4 hr). Moreover, the effective solvents depend somewhat on the clay interlayer cation. The use of tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydropyran gives ∼35% yields at 60°C (4 hr) with Fe3+- or Cr3+-smectites but ∼4% yield with Al3+-smectite.

Mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) clays in lower Eocene sediments of the Texas Gulf Coast decrease in expandability with depth as found in previous studies of clay diagenesis, but at the same depth the 1/S clays from sand laminae tend to be more expandable than clays from adjacent shales. The I/S clays with greater expandability from sands collapse to phases with very low expandabilities after saturation with K. This non-ideal smectite behavior indicates that many of the expandable layers in I/S clays from sand laminae possess an illite-level negative layer charge on the structure. The Greene-Kelley Li-saturation test of the I/S clays also reveals that a considerable portion of the increased layer charge deficiency is created by tetrahedral substitution. The illitization of individual smectite layers in an I/S clay is envisioned to be a two step process instead of the single step rapid transformation implied in many earlier studies. The first rate-limiting step is the creation of sufficiently large negative layer charge in the lattice, primarily by AI for Si substitution in the tetrahedral sheet. The second rate-limiting step is the supply of K to the high-charged expandable layers. The abundance of high-charged expandable layers in I/S clays from sand laminae suggests that the K supply is influenced more by competing ions in the interstitial waters than by the absolute activity of K.

Magnetite (Fe3O4) is a key economically valuable component in iron ore and is extracted by dissolution processes, but among the Fe (oxyhydr)oxides its solubility behavior is one of the least understood. The objective of this study was to improve understanding of magnetite dissolution mechanisms leading to thermodynamic equilibrium by comparing the dissolution of two solid samples, one synthetic and one industrial, using oxalic, sulfuric, and nitric acids at varying concentrations and temperatures. Of the three solid-liquid systems investigated, only the system consisting of magnetite and oxalic acid reached an equilibrium state within the duration of an individual experiment (6 h). In this system, increasing the acid concentration resulted in a significant increase in the equilibrium concentration of dissolved Fe. When dissolving synthetic and industrial magnetite, increasing the temperature not only increased the rate of reaction but also affected the concentration of dissolved Fe. Significant effects were observed when increasing the temperature from 15 to 35°C, but only slight differences were seen on further increases in temperature. Observations regarding the equilibrium state of the sulfuric and nitric acid systems could not be made because equilibrium was not reached. The most important individual observation regarding the equilibrium state of the nitric- and sulfuric-acid systems seems to be that in future studies a much longer reaction time is necessary, due to slow kinetics of the dissolution mechanism. A proton-based mechanism has been hypothesized as the one governing the dissolution of magnetite by these two acids, but only the dissolution of the industrial sample yielded results that were similar for these two acids and consistent with that hypothesis.

Formation of kaolinite-smectite (K-S) mixed layers in a soil toposequence developed from basaltic parent material was examined. The soil formed in a temperate climate with alternating dry and wet seasons in Sardinia (Italy). Chemical composition and charge characteristics of the smectite component in the K-S mixed layers were analyzed to help determine a mechanism for formation. Soils were sampled at the top, intermediate, and base of a steep (35%) slope. As indicated by X-ray diffraction data, the fine clay fraction (>0.1 μm) in the soils is dominated by K-S with a decreasing proportion of kaolinite from the top (70%) to the base (30%). Rapid internal drainage induced by the slope is probably the major factor responsible for the formation of K-S. Chemical composition and charge characteristics of the smectite component in the K-S were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (intercalation with alkylammonium ions), cation exchanged capacity (CEC) and surface area measurements, and infrared spectroscopy. Results indicate that the smectite component is nearly identical over the soil toposequence. The smectite component is the same with respect to charge magnitude and chemical composition, independent of the proportion of kaolinite and smectite components. This suggests the pedogenic formation of K-S by transformation of smectite through dissolution of some smectite layers and subsequent crystallization of kaolinite between the layers of the remaining smectite crystallites.

The extent of illite/smectite (I/S) reactions is linked with quantitative measurements of shale fabric in a suite of samples from a lower Frio Formation well. Greater illitization of the I/S clays is found in laminated shales that possess a larger pore surface area/pore volume (SA/V) of 3.21 × 106 cm−1 than the adjacent massive shale lithofacies with a SA/V of 1.97 × 106 cm−1. Mean pore diameter in both shale lithologies is 0.0145 micrometers, though in the laminated shale distributions are skewed towards more smaller-sized pores. While no direct permeability measurements were made, estimates of permeability that are based on simple physical models using SA/V suggest that lower permeabilities are associated with laminated shales. The trend of greater illitization at higher SA/V values is contrary to expectations that reaction extent is enhanced by greater permeabilities, such as created by silt laminations in shale. The limitations of estimated permeabilities emphasize that porosimetry measurements of shale fabric are useful for estimating the access of material to all reaction sites, and do not just describe the effect of a few large pores that dominate permeability. Greater reaction extent in the laminated shales is associated with the accessibility of fluids to more pore space than in the massive shales.

Many important properties of clay minerals are defined by the species of charge-balancing cation. Phenomena such as clay swelling and cation exchange depend on the cation species present, and understanding how the cations bind with the mineral surface at a fundamental level is important. In the present study the binding affinities of several different charge-balancing cations with the basal surface of the smectite mineral, montmorillonite, have been calculated using molecular dynamics in conjunction with the well-tempered metadynamics algorithm. The results follow a Hofmeister series of preferred ion adsorption to the smectite basal surfaces of the form:

K+ > Na+ > Ca2+ > Cs+ > Ba2+

The results also revealed the energetically favorable position of the ions above the clay basal surfaces. Key features of the free-energy profiles are illustrated by Boltzmann population inversions and analyses of the water structures surrounding the ion and clay surface. The results show that weakly hydrated cations (K+ and Cs+) preferentially form inner-sphere surface complexes (ISSC) above the ditrigonal siloxane cavities of the clay, while the more strongly hydrated cations (Na+) are able to form ISSCs above the basal O atoms of the clay surface. The strongly hydrated cations (Na+, Ca2+, and Ba2+), however, preferentially form outer-sphere surface complexes. The results provide insight into the adsorption mechanisms of several ionic species on montmorillonite and are relevant to many phenomena thought to be affected by cation exchange, such as nuclear waste disposal, herbicide/pesticide-soil interactions, and enhanced oil recovery.

Na-beidellite, a member of the smectite group, was grown hydrothermally from a gel of composition 0.35Na2O·2.35Al2O3·7.3SiO2 in NaOH solutions at a pH between 7.5 and 13.5, a pressure of 1 kbar, and a temperature of 350°C. The synthetic Na-beidellite was characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, electron microprobe, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The unit-cell parameters of the orthorhombic cell are: a = 5.18, b = 8.96, and c = 12.54 Å. The cation-exchange capacity was determined to be 70 meq/100 g. A maximum of 40 wt. % water was present and reversibly lost by heating to about 55°C. The loss of water caused a decrease of the basal spacing to 9.98 Å. At temperatures ≥600°C, the Na-beidellite started to dehydroxylate, reaching its maximum in the range 600°–630°C. At 1100°C the remaining solid recrystallized to Al6Si2O13 (mullite) and SiO2 (cristobalite).

Electroacoustic measurements at 1 MHz, using the Electro-Sonic Amplitude (ESA), on a kaolinite suspension provide a ready method for following the adsorption of hydrolyzable metal ions onto the clay surface. Co2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ ions show similar behavior: The initially negative surface becomes less negative, approaches zero, and may become positive at pH values around neutral, depending on the initial metal concentration. At higher pH, electrokinetic potential goes through a maximum. If the surface has become positive, it becomes less so; and at still higher pH values it may become negative again, depending on the metal ion concentration. The behavior can be interpreted using the model proposed by James and Healy.

Smectite and zeolites were formed from a volcanic glass as the products of reaction with NaOH solution at 90°C and 100°C under atmospheric pressure. Formation conditions of smectite and various zeolites were determined by the ratio of the amounts of volcanic glass (g) to NaOH (g) in the solution. Smectite was formed under the condition that the values of weight of volcanic glass (g)/(NaOH(g)/40) are between 0.5 and 6. Fe was an important constituent of the octahedral layer of smectite.

Monte Carlo simulations based on tested water-water, cation-water, and water-clay potential functions were applied to calculate radial distribution functions for O-O, O-H and H-H spatial correlations in the interlayer region of the two-layer hydrates of Na- and K-montmorillonite. The simulated radial distribution functions then were used to compute the total radial distribution function for interlayer water, a physical quantity that can be determined experimentally by H/D isotopic-difference neutron diffraction. The simulated total radial distribution functions were compared with that for bulk liquid water, and with a total radial distribution function determined experimentally for the two-layer hydrate of Na-montmorillonite by Powell et al. (1997). This comparison suggested that water molecules in the two-layer hydrate of montmorillonite have nearest-neighbor configurations which differ significantly from the tetrahedral ordering of nearest neighbors that characterizes bulk liquid water.

When aqueous dispersions of Na+-smectite or n-butylammonium-vermiculite react with sulfate salts of Fe(II), Co(II), or Ni(II) bipyridyl or 1, 10-phenanthroline complexes in excess of the cation-exchange capacities, intersalated phases with spacings of about 29.5 Å are obtained. Thermal decomposition of the intersalated complex cations affords expanded phases with a d(001) spacing near 18 Å for the smectites and near 28 Å for the vermiculites. These phases are stable to temperatures of at least 550°C. Nitrogen surface areas of the fired products are as high as 400 m2/g.

The incorporation of transition metals into hematite may limit the aqueous concentration and bioavailabity of several important nutrients and toxic heavy metals. Before predicting how hematite controls metal-cation solubility, we must understand the mechanisms by which metal cations are incorporated into hematite. Thus, we have studied the mechanism for Ni2+ and Mn3+ uptake into hematite using extended X-ray absorption fine structures (EXAFS) spectroscopy. EXAFS measurements show that the coordination environment of Ni2+ in hematite corresponds to that resulting from Ni2+ replacing Fe3+. No evidence for NiO or Ni(OH)2 was found. The infrared spectrum of Ni-substituted hematite shows an OH-stretch band at 3168 cm−1 and Fe-OH bending modes at 892 and 796 cm−1. These vibrational bands are similar to those found in goethite. The results suggest that the substitution of Ni2+ for Fe3+ is coupled with the protonation of one of the hematite oxygen atoms to maintain charge balance.

The solubility of Mn3+ in hematite is much less extensive than that of Ni2+ because of the strong Jahn-Teller distortion of Mn3+ in six-fold coordination. Structural evidence of Mn3+ substituting for Fe3+ in hematite was found for a composition of 3.3 mole % Mn2O3. However a sample with nominally 6.6 mole % Mn2O3 was found to consist of two phases: hematite and ramsdellite (MnO2). The results indicate that for cations, such as Mn3+ showing a strong Jahn-Teller effect, there is limited substitution in hematite.

Infrared spectroscopy affords a useful method for the determination of the orientation of molecules sorbed on layer silicates. The orientation of the molecules can be inferred from the observed dichroism of specific absorption bands. Examples of the analysis are illustrated in three complexes with pyridine. One flat and one vertical orientation are observed for the ionic form dependent on layer charge. A different vertical orientation is observed for the neutral molecule. The interpretation of the infrared absorption analysis is confirmed by X-ray diffraction.

Fifteen iron oxide accumulations from the bottoms of two Finnish lakes (“lake ores”) were found to contain as much as 50% Fe. Differential X-ray powder diffraction and selective dissolution by oxalate showed that the samples consisted of poorly crystallized goethite and ferrihydrite. The crust ores of one lake had higher ferrihydrite to goethite ratios than the nodular ores of the other lake. The higher ferrihydrite proportion was attributed to a higher rate of Fe2+ supply from the ground water and/or a higher rate of oxidation as a function of water depth and bottom-sediment permeability.

Values of Al-for-Fe substitution of the goethites determined from unit-cell dimensions agreed with those obtained from chemical extraction if the unit-cell volume rather than the c dimension was used. In very small goethite crystals a slight expansion of the a unit-cell dimension is probaby compensated by a corresponding contraction of the c dimension, so that a contraction of the c dimension need not necessarily be caused by Al substitution.

The goethites of the two lakes differed significantly in their Al-for-Fe substitutions and hence in their unit-cell sizes, OH-bending characteristics, dehydroxylation temperatures, dissolution kinetics, and Möss-bauer parameters. The difference in Al substitution (0 vs. 7 mole %) is attributed to the Al-supplying power of the bottom sediments: the silty-clayey sediments in one lake appear to have supplied Al during goethite formation, whereas the gravelly-sandy sediments in the other lake did not. The compositions of the goethites thus reflect their environments of formation.
