Assume ƒ is continuous on the closed disk D1 : |z| ≤ 1, analytic in |z| ≤ 1, but not analytic on D1. Our concern is with the behavior of the zeros of the polynomials of best uniform approximation to ƒ on D1. It is known that, for such ƒ, every point of the circle |z| = 1 is a cluster point of the set of all zeros of Here we show that this property need not hold for every subsequence of the Specifically, there exists such an f for which the zeros of a suitable subsequence all tend to infinity. Further, for near-best polynomial approximants, we show that this behavior can occur for the whole sequence. Our examples can be modified to apply to approximation in the Lq-norm on |z|= 1 and to uniform approximation on general planar sets (including real intervals).

The real line will be R, Euclidean n-space will be Rn, the unit ball in Rn will be En, the unit sphere in Rn+1 will be Sn, and real projective n-space will be Pn. The canonical line bundle associated with the double cover Sn → Pn will be ηn. Under the local Langlands correspondence, the conductor of an irreducible representation of $\text{G}{{\text{l}}_{n}}\left( F \right)$ is greater than the Swan conductor of the corresponding Galois representation. In this paper, we establish the geometric analogue of this statement by showing that the conductor of a categorical representation of the loop group is greater than the irregularity of the corresponding meromorphic connection.

Let R be a ring with involution*. In this paper, we study additive subgroups A of R which are invariant under all mappings of the form ϕx : a → xax*. That is, xAx* ⊆ A for all x ∈ R. Obvious examples of such subgroups A are ideals of R, the set of symmetric elements, and the set of skew-symmetric elements. We will prove that when R is *-prime, these examples are essentially the only ones.

Let M be a von Neumann algebra acting on a Hilbert space and assume that M has a separating and cyclic vector ω in . Then it can happen that M contains a proper von Neumann subalgebra N for which ω is still cyclic. Such an example was given by Kadison in [4]. He considered and acting on where is a separable Hilbert space. In fact by a result of Dixmier and Maréchal, M, M′ and N have a joint cyclic vector [3]. Also Bratteli and Haagerup constructed such an example ([2], example 4.2) to illustrate the necessity of one of the conditions in the main result of their paper. In fact this situation seems to occur rather often in quantum field theory (see [1] Section 24.2, [3] and [4]).

LetM(X, Y) denote the space of all continuous functions between X and Y and Mƒ(X, Y) the path component corresponding to a given map ƒ : X → Y. When X and Y are classical flag manifolds, we prove the components of M(X, Y) corresponding to “simple” maps ƒ are classified up to rational homotopy type by the dimension of the kernel of ƒ in degree two cohomology. In fact, these components are themselves all products of flag manifolds and odd spheres.

In this paper we shall work in the category of countable CW-complexes with base point and base point preserving maps. All homotopies shall also respect base points. For simplicity, we shall frequently use the same symbol for a map and its homotopy class. Given spaces X, Y, we denote the set of homotopy classes of maps from X to Y by [X, Y]. We have an isomorphism τ: [∑X, Y] → [X, Ω Y] taking each map to its adjoint, where ∑ is the suspension functor and Ω is the loop functor. We shall denote τ(1 ∑x) by e′ and τ-1(1Ωx) by e.

This paper is a continuation of three recent articles concerning the structure of hyperinvariant subspace lattices of operators on a (separable, infinite dimensional) Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We show herein, in particular, that there exists a “universal” fixed block-diagonal operator $B$ on $\mathcal{H}$ such that if $\varepsilon >0$ is given and $T$ is an arbitrary nonalgebraic operator on $\mathcal{H}$, then there exists a compact operator $K$ of norm less than $\varepsilon $ such that (i) Hlat$(T)$ is isomorphic as a complete lattice to Hlat$(B+K)$ and (ii) $B+K$ is a quasidiagonal, ${{C}_{00}}$, $(\text{BCP})$-operator with spectrum and left essential spectrum the unit disc. In the last four sections of the paper, we investigate the possible structures of the hyperlattice of an arbitrary algebraic operator. Contrary to existing conjectures, Hlat$(T)$ need not be generated by the ranges and kernels of the powers of $T$ in the nilpotent case. In fact, this lattice can be infinite.

Wilson loop diagrams are an important tool in studying scattering amplitudes of SYM $N=4$ theory and are known by previous work to be associated to positroids. We characterize the conditions under which two Wilson loop diagrams give the same positroid, prove that an important subclass of subdiagrams (exact subdiagrams) corresponds to uniform matroids, and enumerate the number of different Wilson loop diagrams that correspond to each positroid cell. We also give a correspondence between those positroids which can arise from Wilson loop diagrams and directions in associahedra.

We introduce and study various categories of (equivariant) motives of (versal) flag varieties. We relate these categories with certain categories of parabolic (Demazure) modules. We show that the motivic decomposition type of a versal flag variety depends on the direct sum decomposition type of the parabolic module. To do this we use localization techniques of Kostant and Kumar in the context of generalized oriented cohomology as well as the Rost nilpotence principle for algebraic cobordism and its generic version. As an application, we obtain new proofs and examples of indecomposable Chow motives of versal flag varieties.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a generalization of metric space that arises naturally out of the notion of signal function as it occurs, for example, in (5). In §§ 2-5, the basic definitions and motivation are given. In §§ 6 and 7 several elementary topological properties are proved, and in §§ 8 and 9 an important example from special relativity is developed.

Let $a_1$ , $a_2$ , and $a_3$ be distinct reduced residues modulo q satisfying the congruences $a_1^2 \equiv a_2^2 \equiv a_3^2 \ (\mathrm{mod}\ q)$ . We conditionally derive an asymptotic formula, with an error term that has a power savings in q, for the logarithmic density of the set of real numbers x for which $\pi (x;q,a_1)> \pi (x;q,a_2) > \pi (x;q,a_3)$ . The relationship among the $a_i$ allows us to normalize the error terms for the $\pi (x;q,a_i)$ in an atypical way that creates mutual independence among their distributions, and also allows for a proof technique that uses only elementary tools from probability.

In two recent papers by V. F. Cowling and C. L. Miracle (1; 2), the regularity of generalized Lototsky transformations, as well as their application to the geometric series, has been investigated. The main interest of the papers centres around (1, Theorems 3.1 and 4.1) and (2, Theorem A). In (1, Theorem 3.1) and in (2, Theorem A), the authors stated and proved a set of sufficient conditions for the regularity of Lototsky-type transformations. In (1, Theorem 4.1), they proved under certain additional conditions that these transformations sum the geometric series ∑zn to (1 — z)–l if Re z < 1.

Let $K$ be a complex reductive algebraic group and $V$ a representation of $K$. Let $S$ denote the ring of polynomials on $V$. Assume that the action of $K$ on $S$ is multiplicity-free. If $\lambda $ denotes the isomorphism class of an irreducible representation of $K$, let $\rho \lambda :K\to GL({{V}_{\lambda }})$ denote the corresponding irreducible representation and ${{S}_{\lambda }}$ the $\lambda $-isotypic component of $S$. Write ${{S}_{\lambda }}.{{S}_{\mu }}$ for the subspace of $S$ spanned by products of ${{S}_{\lambda }}$ and ${{S}_{\mu }}$. If ${{V}_{v}}$ occurs as an irreducible constituent of ${{V}_{\lambda }}\otimes {{V}_{\mu }}$, is it true that ${{S}_{v}}\subseteq {{S}_{\lambda }}.{{S}_{\mu }}?$ In this paper, the authors investigate this question for representations arising in the context of Hermitian symmetric pairs. It is shown that the answer is yes in some cases and, using an earlier result of Ruitenburg, that in the remaining classical cases, the answer is yes provided that a conjecture of Stanley on the multiplication of Jack polynomials is true. It is also shown how the conjecture connects multiplication in the ring $S$ to the usual Littlewood–Richardson rule.

Eigenvalue problems of the form Af = λBf, where λ is a complex parameter and A and B are operators on a Hilbert Space, have been considered by a number of authors (e.g., [1; 3; 5; 7; 10]). In this paper, we shall be concerned with the existence and nature of eigenfunction expansions associated with such problems, with no assumptions of self-adjointness. The form of the theorems to be given here is: if the system (A, B) is spectral and complete (definitions below), and F and G are operators satisfying certain “smallness” conditions, then (A + F, B + G) is also spectral and complete. The hypotheses for these theorems are chosen with an eye to applying the results to boundary-value problems on a compact interval. Such applications, together with an examination of circumstances under which the system (Dn, Dm) (D denoting differentiation) is spectral and complete under a broad class of boundary conditions, will be made in a later paper.

This paper provides a functional analogue of the recently initiated dual Orlicz–Brunn–Minkowski theory for star bodies. We first propose the Orlicz addition of measures, and establish the dual functional Orlicz–Brunn–Minkowski inequality. Based on a family of linear Orlicz additions of two measures, we provide an interpretation for the famous $f$-divergence. Jensen’s inequality for integrals is also proved to be equivalent to the newly established dual functional Orlicz–Brunn–Minkowski inequality. An optimization problem for the $f$-divergence is proposed, and related functional affine isoperimetric inequalities are established.

In this paper we consider questions of recapturing an analytic function in a Banach space from its values on a uniqueness set. The principal method is to use reproducing kernels to construct a sequence in the Banach space which converges in norm to the given functions. The method works for several classical Banach spaces of analytic functions including some Hardy and Bergman spaces.
