An n-knot (Sn+2, Sn) is amphicheiral if there is an orientation reversing autohomeomorphism of Sn+2 leaving Sn invariant as a set. It is invertible if there is an orientation preserving autohomeomorphism of Sn+2 whose restriction to Sn is an orientation reversing autohomeomorphism of Sn onto itself. In 1961 Fox [8, Problem 35] asked if there exist non-amphicheiral locally flat 2-knots. We will prove the following THEOREM 1. For any integer n there are smooth n-knots which are neither amphicheiral nor invertible.

A knot (Sn+2, Sn) is + amphicheiral (resp. —amphicheiral) if there is an orientation reversing autohomeomorphism f of Sn+2 leaving Sn invariant such that f| Snpreserves (resp. reverses) orientation.

If X is a space and , the kth deleted product space Xk* of X is the topological product X ⨯ X ⨯ . . . ⨯ X of copies of X minus the set of all points of the form (x, x, . . . , x), where x ∊ X. In (4), the author shows that the homology groups of Xk*, where X is a tree, produce as much information about trees as counting the orders of vertices.

Let E be a completely regular space, let C* denote the Banach algebra of continuous bounded real-valued functions on E, and let A* denote a Banach subalgebra which contains the constant function 1. Let

The purpose of this note is to discuss some properties of the subsets L(A*) of the ring C of continuous real-valued functions on E. They arose out of an unsuccessful attempt to distinguish C* from its Banach subalgebras.

In § I, it is shown that M(G)*, the space of bounded linear functionals on M(G), can be represented as a semigroup of bounded operators on M(G).

Let △ denote the non-zero multiplicative linear functionals on M(G) and let P be the norm closed linear span of △ in M(G)*. In § II, it is shown that P, with the Arens multiplication, is a commutative B*-algebra with identity. Thus P = C(B), where B is a compact, Hausdorff space.

We investigate the number of integral solutions possessed by a pair of diagonal cubic equations in a large box. Provided that the number of variables in the system is at least fourteen, and in addition the number of variables in any non-trivial linear combination of the underlying forms is at least eight, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of integral solutions consistent with the product of local densities associated with the system.

There is a unique R-algebra homomorphism Δ : S(M) → S(M) ⊗RS(M) (called the comultiplication) satisfying Δ(m) = m ⊗ 1 + 1 ⊗ m for all m ∊ M; any element x ∊ S(M) for which Δ(x) = x ⊗ 1 + 1 ⊗ x is said to be primitive. The set of all primitive elements in S(M) is denoted P(M).

We study the generalized moment problem and the marginal constraints problem. We connect them when the measures have a finite support.

The extreme points of the convex set of solutions with a finite support are determined in both problems.

For the moment problem, they are shown to span in the weak topology the set of all the solutions.

In (1, §§ 2.3 and 2.4) we proved that certain distributive lattices are simultaneously lattice-embeddable in the degrees of recursive unsolvability and in the hyperdegrees. Let ℒ be the non-distributive lattice {0,1, a0, a1,…}, where ai ∪ aj = 1 and ai ∩ aj = 1 whenever i ≠ j. We shall prove the following theorem.

THEOREM. The lattice ℒ is simultaneously lattice-embeddable in the degrees and hyperdegrees.

Here, one may not replace $\frac{1}{4}\exp (-\frac{13}{\log \lambda })$ by $\exp (-\frac{2-\varepsilon }{\log \lambda })$, for any $\varepsilon >0$. As our motivating application, we prove a convergence result for diagonal Padé approximants for functions meromorphic in the unit ball.

We consider the Randers space $({{V}^{n}},\,{{F}_{b}})$ obtained by perturbing the Euclidean metric by a translation, ${{F}_{b}}\,=\,\alpha \,+\,\beta $, where $\alpha $ is the Euclidean metric and $\beta $ is a 1-form with norm $b,\,0\,\le \,b\,<\,1$. We introduce the concept of a hypersurface with constant mean curvature in the direction of a unitary normal vector field. We obtain the ordinary differential equation that characterizes the rotational surfaces $({{V}^{3}},\,{{F}_{b}})$ of constant mean curvature (cmc) in the direction of a unitary normal vector field. These equations reduce to the classical equation of the rotational cmc surfaces in Euclidean space, when $b\,=\,0$. It also reduces to the equation that characterizes the minimal rotational surfaces in $({{V}^{3}},\,{{F}_{b}})$ when $H\,=\,0$, obtained by M. Souza and K. Tenenblat. Although the differential equation depends on the choice of the normal direction, we show that both equations determine the same rotational surface, up to a reflection. We also show that the round cylinders are cmc surfaces in the direction of the unitary normal field. They are generated by the constant solution of the differential equation. By considering the equation as a nonlinear dynamical system, we provide a qualitative analysis, for $0\,<\,b\,<\,\frac{\sqrt{3}}{3}$. Using the concept of stability and considering the linearization around the single equilibrium point (the constant solution), we verify that the solutions are locally asymptotically stable spirals. This is proved by constructing a Lyapunov function for the dynamical systemand by determining the basin of stability of the equilibrium point. The surfaces of rotation generated by such solutions tend asymptotically to one end of the cylinder.

We consider the number of spaces, up to rational homotopy equivalence, which have rational cohomology algebra isomorphic to that of stunted complex projective space . Using a classification theory due to Schlessinger and Stasheff, we determine the number of rational homotopy types with rational comology algebra isomorphic to , for any given n and k. The necessary computations make use of a spectral sequence introduced by the second named author.

In a previous paper [1], the authors introduced and studied the notion of special conformally flat spaces and quasi-umbilical hypersurfaces. In that paper, the authors proved that every conformally flat space of codimension one in a Euclidean space is special and, conversely, every special conformally flat space can be isometrically immersed in a Euclidean space as a quasi-umbilical hypersurface.

In the present paper, the authors study the conformally flat spaces of codimension 2 in a Euclidean space. (Manifolds, mappings, functions, etc. are assumed to be sufficiently differentiate and we shall restrict ourselves only to manifolds of dimension n > 3.)

We introduce the notion of strongly projective graph, and characterise these graphs in terms of their neighbourhood poset. We describe certain exponential graphs associated to complete graphs and odd cycles. We extend and generalise a result of Greenwell and Lovász [6]: if a connected graph $G$ does not admit a homomorphism to $K$, where $K$ is an odd cycle or a complete graph on at least 3 vertices, then the graph $G\,\times \,{{K}^{S}}$ admits, up to automorphisms of $K$, exactly $s$ homomorphisms to $K$.

In [5] Pall denned a partitioning of a quadratic space over a field of characteristic not 2 to be a collection of disjoint (except for ﹛0﹜ ) maximal totally isotropic subspaces whose union formed the set of isotropic vectors. Clearly isometric quadratic spaces simultaneously do or do not have partitionings. Pall exhibited the existence of partitionings for the spaces associated with

over formally real fields for n = 1, 2, 4, 8 and over Z/(p), p prime, for n = 1, 2. Using the latter, he was able to find a new proof for Jacobi's formula for the number of representations of a positive integer as the sum of four integral squares.

The main purpose of this note is to prove a special case of the following conjecture.

Conjecture. If F is holomorphic on the unit ball Bn in Cn and has positive real part, then F is in Hp(Bn) for 0 < p < ½(n + 1).

Here Hp(Bn) (0 < p < ∞) denote the usual Hardy spaces of holomorphic functions on Bn. See below for definitions. We remark that the conjecture is known for 0 < p < 1 and that some evidence for it already exists in the literature; for example [1, Theorems 3.11 and 3.15] where it is shown that a particular extreme element of the convex cone of functions

is in Hp(B2) for 0 < p < 3/2.

Let $p$ be an odd prime number, $K$ a $p$-adic field of degree $r$ over ${{\mathbf{Q}}_{p}}$, $O$ the ring of integers in $K,\,B\,=\,\{{{\beta }_{1}},\ldots .{{\beta }_{r}}\}$ an integral basis of $K$ over ${{\mathbf{Q}}_{p}}$, $u$ a unit in $O$ and consider sets of the form $N\,=\,\{{{n}_{1}}{{\beta }_{1}}\,+\ldots +\,{{n}_{r}}{{\beta }_{r}}\,:\,1\,\le \,{{n}_{j}}\,\le \,{{N}_{j}},\,1\,\le \,j\,\le \,r\}$. We show under certain growth conditions that the pair correlation of $\{u{{z}^{2}}\,:\,z\,\in N\}$ becomes Poissonian.

A topological group G is called monothetic if it contains a dense cyclic subgroup. An element x of G is called a generator of G if x generates a dense cyclic subgroup of G. We denote by E(G) the set of generators of G; the complement of E(G) in G, consisting of the “non-generators” of G, we write as N(G) Throughout this paper we consider only locally compact abelian (LCA) groups satisfying the T2 separation axiom (note that a monothetic group is automatically abelian). In [1] certain problems of measurability concerning the set E(G) are discussed. In this paper we shall consider some algebraic and topological properties of the sets E(G) and N(G)
