We prove that it is consistent that Club Stationary Reflection and the Special Aronszajn Tree Property simultaneously hold on $\omega _2$ , thereby contributing to the study of the tension between compactness and incompactness in set theory. The poset which produces the final model follows the collapse of an ineffable cardinal first with an iteration of club adding (with anticipation) and second with an iteration specializing Aronszajn trees.

In the first part of the paper, we prove a general theorem about specializing Aronszajn trees on $\omega _2$ after forcing with what we call $\mathcal {F}$ -Strongly Proper posets, where $\mathcal {F}$ is either the weakly compact filter or the filter dual to the ineffability ideal. This type of poset, of which the Levy collapse is a degenerate example, uses systems of exact residue functions to create many strongly generic conditions. We prove a new result about stationary set preservation by quotients of this kind of poset; as a corollary, we show that the original Laver–Shelah model, which starts from a weakly compact cardinal, satisfies a strong stationary reflection principle, although it fails to satisfy the full Club Stationary Reflection. In the second part, we show that the composition of collapsing and club adding (with anticipation) is an $\mathcal {F}$ -Strongly Proper poset. After proving a new result about Aronszajn tree preservation, we show how to obtain the final model.

We establish the restricted sumset analog of the celebrated conjecture of Sárközy on additive decompositions of the set of nonzero squares over a finite field. More precisely, we show that if $q>13$ is an odd prime power, then the set of nonzero squares in $\mathbb {F}_q$ cannot be written as a restricted sumset $A \hat {+} A$, extending a result of Shkredov. More generally, we study restricted sumsets in multiplicative subgroups over finite fields as well as restricted sumsets in perfect powers (over integers) motivated by a question of Erdős and Moser. We also prove an analog of van Lint–MacWilliams’ conjecture for restricted sumsets, which appears to be the first analogue of Erdős--Ko–Rado theorem in a family of Cayley sum graphs.

Let R be a finite ring with 1 and let R* denote the group of units of R. Let p be a prime number. In this paper we consider the question of whether there exist a, b in R* such that a and b are non- p -th powers whose sum is 1. If such units a, b existing, we say that R is an N (p)-ring. Of course if p does not divide |R*|, the order of R*, then every element in R* is a pth power.

We investigate the convergence rate of multi-marginal optimal transport costs that are regularized with the Boltzmann–Shannon entropy, as the noise parameter $\varepsilon $ tends to $0$. We establish lower and upper bounds on the difference with the unregularized cost of the form $C\varepsilon \log (1/\varepsilon )+O(\varepsilon )$ for some explicit dimensional constants C depending on the marginals and on the ground cost, but not on the optimal transport plans themselves. Upper bounds are obtained for Lipschitz costs or locally semiconcave costs for a finer estimate, and lower bounds for $\mathscr {C}^2$ costs satisfying some signature condition on the mixed second derivatives that may include degenerate costs, thus generalizing results previously in the two marginals case and for nondegenerate costs. We obtain in particular matching bounds in some typical situations where the optimal plan is deterministic.

We investigate the representation theory of the crossed-product ${{C}^{*}}$-algebra associated with a compact group $G$ acting on a locally compact space $X$ when the stability subgroups vary discontinuously. Our main result applies when $G$ has a principal stability subgroup or $X$ is locally of finite $G$-orbit type. Then the upper multiplicity of the representation of the crossed product induced from an irreducible representation $V$ of a stability subgroup is obtained by restricting $V$ to a certain closed subgroup of the stability subgroup and taking the maximum of the multiplicities of the irreducible summands occurring in the restriction of $V$. As a corollary we obtain that when the trivial subgroup is a principal stability subgroup; the crossed product is a Fell algebra if and only if every stability subgroup is abelian. A second corollary is that the ${{C}^{*}}$-algebra of the motion group ${{\mathbb{R}}^{n}}\,\rtimes \,\text{SO}\left( n \right)$ is a Fell algebra. This uses the classical branching theorem for the special orthogonal group $\text{SO}\left( n \right)$ with respect to $\text{SO}\left( n-1 \right)$. Since proper transformation groups are locally induced from the actions of compact groups, we describe how some of our results can be extended to transformation groups that are locally proper.

We prove a weak version of the cross-product conjecture: $\textrm {F}(k+1,\ell ) \hskip .06cm \textrm {F}(k,\ell +1) \ge (\frac 12+\varepsilon ) \hskip .06cm \textrm {F}(k,\ell ) \hskip .06cm \textrm {F}(k+1,\ell +1)$, where $\textrm {F}(k,\ell )$ is the number of linear extensions for which the values at fixed elements $x,y,z$ are k and $\ell $ apart, respectively, and where $\varepsilon>0$ depends on the poset. We also prove the converse inequality and disprove the generalized cross-product conjecture. The proofs use geometric inequalities for mixed volumes and combinatorics of words.

The recent study of operational statistics (see [2; 4; 5; 10 ; 11 ; 12 ; 13 ; 14 ; 15 ; 16]) describes a generalized sample space which represents the set of all possible outcomes of a collection of coherently related operations (experiments). This approach to probability generalizes the classical notion of a sample space due to A. N. Kolmogorov [8], and it gives the concept somewhat wider applicability. For instance in [4] and [14], D. J. Foulis and C. H. Randall set out the start of a program wherein a generalized sample space (hereafter called a GSS) and its affiliated partially ordered set of generalized propositions could be a framework within which a genuinely operational interpretation of the so called “logic” of quantum mechanical systems may be found.

One motivation for studying representation theory for the unitary group of a unital C*-algebra arises from Theoretical Physics. (In the latter connection, Segal [9] and Arveson [1] have developed a representation theory for G. Their approach is in a different direction from ours.) Another motivation for studying the representation theory of G arises out of the desire to unify the theories of amenable von Neumann algebras and amenable locally compact groups.

A serious problem for such a representation theory is the absence of Haar measure on G in general.

In [7], the author introduced the class RepdG of contractive unitary representations of G, the strong metric condition involved compensating for the lack of Haar measure.

We compute the homology of limn->∞(Gn ≀ X), where (Gn) is a system of subgroups of Σpn containing a p-Sylow subgroup (Σpn p) and satisfying certain properties. We show that H*(limn->∞(Gn, ≀ X);Z/pZ) is built naturally over homology operations related to (Gn). We describe this family of operations using modular coinvariants.

Our aim in this paper is to demonstrate a relationship between left exact and representable functors. More precisely, in the functor category whose objects are the additive functors from the dual of an abelian category 𝔄 to the category of abelian groups and whose morphisms are the natural transformations between them, the left exact functors can be characterized as those equivalent to a direct limit of representable functors taken over a directed class. The proof will proceed in the following manner. Lambek [3] and Ulmer [7] have shown that any functor T in can be expressed as a direct limit of representable functors taken over a comma category. When T is left exact, it is easily observed that this comma category is a filtered category. When T is left exact, it is easily observed that this comma category is a filtered category.

Let M0 be the set of measures μ on the real line such that open sets are μ*-immeasurable. While attempting to find out whether a set μ*-measurable for all μ in Mo is mapped into a similar set by a continuous function of bounded variation, Maurice Sion develops a theory for what he calls variational measure (4). As an application of the theory, he gets conditions on a function f and a set of measures M in order that f map a set, which is μ*-measurable for all μ ∈ M, into a set of the same kind. In particular he proves for his class M2 (def. 2.5), the following theorem (4, § 8.11).

In this paper, we establish the regularity of strong solutions to nondivergence parabolic equations with BMO coefficients in nondoubling weighted spaces.

The “combinatorial line conjecture” states that for all q ≧ 2 and there exists such that if , X is a q-element set, and A is any subset of X n (= cartesian product of n copies of X) with more than elements (that is, A has density greater than ), then A contains a combinatorial line. (For a definition of combinatorial line, together with statements and proofs of many results related to the combinatorial line conjecture, including all those results mentioned below, see [5]. Since we are not directly concerned with combinatorial lines in this paper, we do not reproduce the definition here.)

This conjecture (which is a strengthened version of a conjecture of Moser [7]), if true, would bear the same relation to the Hales-Jewett theorem that Szemerédi's theorem bears to van der Waerden's theorem.

This paper continues the nonstandard duality theory of locally convex, topological vector spaces begun in Section 5 of [3]. In Section 1, we isolate an external property, called the pseudo monad, that appears to be one of the central concepts of the theory (Definition 1.2). In Section 2, we relate the pseudo monad to the Fin operation. For example, it is shown that the pseudo monad of a µ-saturated subset A of *E, the nonstandard model of the vector space E, is the smallest subset of A that generates Fin (A) (Proposition 2.7).

The nonstandard model of a dual system of vector spaces is considered in Section 3. In this section, we use pseudo monads to establish relationships among infinitesimal polars, finite polars (see (3.1) and (3.2)) and the Fin operation (Theorem 3.7).

In this paper we study lattice properties of operator algebras which are invariant under compact perturbations. It is easy to see that if and are two operator algebras with contained in , then the reverse inclusion holds for their lattices of invariant subspaces. We will show that in certain cases, the assumption thats is contained in , where is the ideal of compact operators, implies that the lattice of is “approximately” contained in the lattice of . In particular, supposed and are reflexive and have commutative subspace lattices containing “enough” finite dimensional elements. We show (Corollary 2.8) that if is unitarily equivalent to a subalgebra of , then there is a unitary operator which carries all “sufficiently large” subspaces in lat into lat .
