We obtain a nontrivial upper bound for the multiplicative energy of any sufficiently large subset of a subvariety of a finite algebraic group. We also find some applications of our results to the growth of conjugates classes, estimates of exponential sums, and restriction phenomenon.

Let A be a symmetrisable generalised Cartan matrix, and let $\mathfrak {g}(A)$ be the corresponding Kac–Moody algebra. In this paper, we address the following fundamental question on the structure of $\mathfrak {g}(A)$ : given two homogeneous elements $x,y\in \mathfrak {g}(A)$ , when is their bracket $[x,y]$ a nonzero element? As an application of our results, we give a description of the solvable and nilpotent graded subalgebras of $\mathfrak {g}(A)$ .

In this paper, we investigate the weighted multilinear boundedness properties of the maximal higher order Calderón commutator for the dimensions larger than two. We establish all weighted multilinear estimates on the product of the $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{d},w)$ space, including some peculiar endpoint estimates of the higher dimensional Calderón commutator.

We apply the filtered and graded methods developed in earlier works to find (noncommutative) free group algebras in division rings.

If $L$ is a Lie algebra, we denote by $U(L)$ its universal enveloping algebra. P. M. Cohn constructed a division ring $\mathfrak{D}_{L}$ that contains $U(L)$. We denote by $\mathfrak{D}(L)$ the division subring of $\mathfrak{D}_{L}$ generated by $U(L)$.

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero, and let $L$ be a nonabelian Lie $k$-algebra. If either $L$ is residually nilpotent or $U(L)$ is an Ore domain, we show that $\mathfrak{D}(L)$ contains (noncommutative) free group algebras. In those same cases, if $L$ is equipped with an involution, we are able to prove that the free group algebra in $\mathfrak{D}(L)$ can be chosen generated by symmetric elements in most cases.

Let $G$ be a nonabelian residually torsion-free nilpotent group, and let $k(G)$ be the division subring of the Malcev–Neumann series ring generated by the group algebra $k[G]$. If $G$ is equipped with an involution, we show that $k(G)$ contains a (noncommutative) free group algebra generated by symmetric elements.

In the mid 80’s Conner and Perlis showed that for cyclic number fields of prime degree p the isometry class of integral trace is completely determined by the discriminant. Here we generalize their result to tame cyclic number fields of arbitrary degree. Furthermore, for such fields, we give an explicit description of a Gram matrix of the integral trace in terms of the discriminant of the field.

The aim of this paper is to study circular units in the compositum K of t cyclic extensions of ${\mathbb {Q}}$ ( $t\ge 2$ ) of the same odd prime degree $\ell $ . If these fields are pairwise arithmetically orthogonal and the number s of primes ramifying in $K/{\mathbb {Q}}$ is larger than $t,$ then a nontrivial root $\varepsilon $ of the top generator $\eta $ of the group of circular units of K is constructed. This explicit unit $\varepsilon $ is used to define an enlarged group of circular units of K, to show that $\ell ^{(s-t)\ell ^{t-1}}$ divides the class number of K, and to prove an annihilation statement for the ideal class group of K.

Let M be a closed, connected, orientable topological $4$ -manifold, and G be a finite group acting topologically and locally linearly on M. In this paper, we investigate the spectral sequence for the Borel cohomology $H^*_G(M)$ and establish new bounds on the rank of G for homologically trivial actions with discrete singular set.

We classify real two-dimensional orbits of conformal subgroups such that the orbits contain two circular arcs through a point. Such surfaces must be toric and admit a Möbius automorphism group of dimension at least two. Our theorem generalizes the classical classification of Dupin cyclides.

In this note we search the parameter space of Horrocks–Mumford quintic threefolds and locate a Calabi–Yau threefold that is modular, in the sense that the $L$-function of its middle-dimensional cohomology is associated with a classical modular form of weight 4 and level 55.

This paper may be regarded as a sequel to (1), where the initial value or Cauchy problem for harmonic tensors on a normal hyperbolic Riemann space was treated. The mixed problems to be studied here involve boundary conditions on a timelike boundary surface in addition to the Cauchy data on a spacelike initial manifold. The components of a harmonic tensor satisfy a system of wave equations with similar principal part, and we assign two initial conditions and one boundary condition for each component.

An extension theorem for holomorphic mappings between two domains in ${{\mathbb{C}}^{2}}$ is proved under purely local hypotheses.

One important point in the determination of the automorphisms of the classical groups is the study of group-theoretic properties of the elements of order 2, that is, the involutions. The group of similitudes and the projective group of similitudes of a non-degenerate quadratic form Q are extensions of the orthogonal group and the projective orthogonal group, respectively. These extended groups may contain involutions which do not belong to the orthogonal group or the projective orthogonal group. To study the automorphisms of such groups, group-theoretic properties of some of these new involutions should be established.

The aim of this paper is to give some properties of a similitude T of ratio ρ whose square T2 is equal to the scalar multiplication by — p (it is always assumed that we are dealing with a field of characteristic ≠2). The well-known Hasse-Brauer-Noether theorem states that a simple algebra with center a number field k splits over k (i.e., is a full matrix algebra) if and only if it splits over the completion of k at every rank one valuation of k. It is natural to ask whether this principle can be extended to a broader class of fields. In particular, we prove here the following extension.

In this paper the question of weak and strong local optimality of a Lipschitz (as opposed to C1 ) extremal is addressed. We show that the classical Jacobi sufficient conditions can be extended to the case of Lipschitz candidates. The key idea for this achievement lies in proving that the “generalized” strengthened Weierstrass condition is equivalent to the existence of a “feedback control” function at which the maximum in the “true” Hamiltonian is attained. Then the Hamilton-Jacobi approach is pursued in order to conclude the result.

We study the connectedness of the moduli space of gauge equivalence classes of flat $G$-connections on a compact orientable surface or a compact nonorientable surface for a class of compact connected Lie groups. This class includes all the compact, connected, simply connected Lie groups, and some non-semisimple classical groups.
