where Pn(z), Qn(t) are, respectively, the nth Legendre polynomials of the first and second kind and γ is a closed and rectifiable Jordan curve which includes [— 1, 1] in its interior and is included, together with its interior, in H.

We consider symmetries of the Dedonder equation arising from variational problems with partial derivatives. Assuming a proper action of the symmetry group, we identify a set of reduced equations on an open dense subset of the domain of definition of the fields under consideration. By continuity, the Dedonder equation is satisfied whenever the reduced equations are satisfied.

This note addresses the question of characterizing the elements of a C*-algebra which have local unitary cross sections in the sense described below. Let denote a C*-algebra with identity and let denote the unitary group in .

Let A be a matrix of finite order n and finite degree d, whose characteristic roots are certain nth roots of unity a1, a2…, ad. We wish to prove a congruence (6) between the traces (tr) of certain powers of A, which is suggested by two somewhat simpler congruences (1) and (3). First, if tr (A) is a rational integer, it is easy to establish the familiar congruence

even though tr(Ap) may not itself be rational.

The relation between the notions of measurability and continuity of a function has received a great deal of attention. The best-known result in this connection is the Vitali-Lusin theorem. Various versions of it can be found in (2; 3; 5; 8; 9). We prove one in this paper (Theorem 3.5) under very weak assumptions and state the classical one in Corollary 3.6. Functions satisfying the property stated in the theorem are frequently called quasicontinuous.

Here we are interested in the notion of approximate continuity, which we call μ-continuity for short and which is closely connected to differentiation. It was first introduced by Lebesgue (4) and it has so far required knowledge of density theorems in order to prove its relation to measurability. In this paper, making use of a certain type of Vitali property, we prove first the relation between μ-measurable functions and those μ-continuous almost everywhere (Theorems 3.8 and 3.9). Then, in §4, with Theorem 3.8 as the main tool, we derive several theorems about density and differentiation which extend results found in (1; 3; 7; 8).

The following result has been conjectured by Dr. Birch. Let z1 z2, . . . , zn be any n complex numbers such that

attains its greatest value when the z are at the vertices of a regular n-sided polygon inscribed in the circle |z| =1.

It seems to be difficult to prove this but Dr. Birch informs me that some work by Mullholland shows that the result is false for large n. I can, however, prove that the result is true for n = 3, and then Δ ≤ 27. The suggested general result would be Δ ≤ nn.

In this paper we consider representations of weakly regular algebras with permutable congruences and a Boolean orthogonality as direct products of orthoprime algebras. Our theorems generalize results of Abian [2; 3] and Speed [24] which characterize direct products of integral domains, and results of Abian [1] and Chacron [7] which characterize direct products of division rings.

Given a commutative unital ring R, we show that the finiteness length of a group G is bounded above by the finiteness length of the Borel subgroup of rank one $\textbf {B}_2^{\circ }(R)=\left ( \begin {smallmatrix} * & * \\ 0 & * \end {smallmatrix}\right )\leq \operatorname {\textrm {SL}}_2(R)$ whenever G admits certain R-representations with metabelian image. Combined with results due to Bestvina–Eskin–Wortman and Gandini, this gives a new proof of (a generalization of) Bux’s equality on the finiteness length of S-arithmetic Borel groups. We also give an alternative proof of an unpublished theorem due to Strebel, characterizing finite presentability of Abels’ groups $\textbf {A}_n(R) \leq \operatorname {\textrm {GL}}_n(R)$ in terms of n and $\textbf {B}_2^{\circ }(R)$ . This generalizes earlier results due to Remeslennikov, Holz, Lyul’ko, Cornulier–Tessera, and points out to a conjecture about the finiteness length of such groups.

Let f: Mn→ Npbe the projection map of an MS-fibering of manifolds β with finite non-empty singular set Aand simply connected total space (see 1). Results of Timourian (10) imply that (n, p) = (4, 3), (8, 5) or (16, 9), while a theorem of Conner (2) yields that #(A), the cardinality of the singular set, is equal to the Euler characteristic of Mn. We give an elementary proof of this fact and, in addition, prove that #(A) is actually determined by bn/2(Mn), the middle betti number of Mn, or what is the same, by bn/2(Np – f(A)). It is then shown that β is topologically the suspension of a (Hopf) sphere bundle when Np is a sphere and bn/2(Mn) = 0. It follows as a corollary that β must also be a suspension when Mn is n/4-connected with vanishing bn/2. Examples where bn/2 is not zero are constructed and we state a couple of conjectures concerning the classification of such objects.

Let $G$ be a finite group. A faithful $G$ -variety $X$ is called strongly incompressible if every dominant $G$ -equivariant rationalmap of $X$ onto another faithful $G$ -variety $Y$ is birational. We settle the problem of existence of strongly incompressible $G$ -curves for any finite group $G$ and any base field $k$ of characteristic zero.

Suppose that $P=MN$ is a maximal parabolic subgroup of a quasisplit, connected, reductive classical group $G$ defined over a non-Archimedean field and $A$ is the standard intertwining operator attached to a tempered representation of $G$ induced from $M$ . In this paper we determine all the cases in which Lie$(N)$ is prehomogeneous under $\text{Ad}\left( m \right)$ when $N$ is non-abelian, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for $A$ to have a pole at $0$.

In this article we characterize the univalent harmonic mappings from the exterior of the unit disk, $\Delta $, onto a simply connected domain $\Omega $ containing infinity and which are solutions of the system of elliptic partial differential equations $\overline{{{f}_{{\bar{z}}}}\left( Z \right)}=a\left( z \right){{f}_{z}}\left( z \right)$ where the second dilatation function $a\left( z \right)$ is a finite Blaschke product. At the end of this article, we apply our results to nonparametric minimal surfaces having the property that the image of its Gauss map is the upper half-sphere covered once or twice.

Let G be an additive group with nonempty subsets S and T. Let S ± T = {s ± t; s ∊ S, t ∊ T}, let S be the set complement of S in G, and let |S| be the cardinality of S. We abbreviate {f} where f ∊ G to f. If S + S and S have no element in common, then we say that S is a sum-free set in G or that S is sum-free in G. If S is a sum-free set in G and if for every sum-free set T in G, |S| ≧ |T|, then S is said to be a maximal sum-free set in G. We denote by λ(G) the cardinality of a maximal sum-free set in G. We say that S is in arithmetic progression having difference d if S = {s, s + d, …, s + nd} for some s, d ∊ G and some integer n ≧ 0.

Theorems of Phragmèn-Lindelöf type and other related results for solutions of elliptic-parabolic equations have been given by numerous authors in recent years. Many of these results are based upon the maximum principle and the use of auxiliary comparison functions which are constructed as supersolutions of the equations under various conditions on the coefficients. In this paper we present an axiomatized treatment of these topics, replacing specific hypotheses on the nature of the coefficients of the equations by a single assumption concerning the maximum principle and another concerning the existence of positive supersolutions, in terms of which the theorems are stated.

Let A be a commutative ring, and let Proj A[t0, ti]. By a vector bundle on X we mean a locally free sheaf of finite rank on X. Set t = t1/to. Then X is made up of two affine pieces U1 = Spec A[t], and U2 = Spec A[t-1]. Let P(R) denote the category of finitely generated projective modules over the ring R. The category of vector bundles on X is equivalent to the category of triples (P1,f1, P2), where P1 ∊ 𝓅 (A[t]), P2 ∊ 𝓅(A[t-1]), and

is an A[t, t-1] -isomorphism. In [2], the category of vector bundles on is denned directly in this manner, without first defining (so that one could work over a non-commutative ring). We prove that if A is a Krull ring (or a Noetherian ring with connected spec) of dimension > 0, then there is an indecomposable vector bundle of rank n on X, for every positive integer n.

We consider the stochastic difference equation ${{\eta }_{k}}\,=\,{{\xi }_{k}}\phi \left( {{\eta }_{k-1}} \right),\,\,k\,\in \,\mathbb{Z}$ on a locally compact group $G$, where $\phi $ is an automorphism of $G$, ${{\xi }_{K}}$ are given $G$-valued random variables, and ${{\eta }_{k}}$ are unknown $G$-valued random variables. This equation was considered by Tsirelson and Yor on a one-dimensional torus. We consider the case when ${{\xi }_{K}}$ have a common law $\mu $ and prove that if $G$ is a distal group and $\phi $ is a distal automorphism of $G$ and if the equation has a solution, then extremal solutions of the equation are in one-to-one correspondence with points on the coset space $K\backslash G$ for some compact subgroup $K$ of $G$ such that $\mu $ is supported on $Kz\,=\,z\phi \left( K \right)$ for any $z$ in the support of $\mu $. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of solutions to the equation.

In [3], the perfect rings of Bass [1] were characterized in terms of torsions in the following way:

A ring R is right perfect if and only if every (hereditary) torsion in the categoryMod Rof all left R-modules is fundamental (i.e. generated by some minimal torsions) and closed under taking direct products; as a consequence, the number of all torsions inMod Ris finite and equal to 2n for a natural n.

Here, we present a simple description of those rings R which allow only two (trivial) torsions, viz. 0 and Mod R (and thus, are right perfect by [3]). Finite direct sums of these rings represent a natural generalization of completely reducible (i.e. artinian semisimple) rings (cf. Theorem 2) and we shall call them for that matter π-reducible rings. They can also be characterized in terms of their idempotent two-sided ideals.

Let Y be a complex Banach space, U an open subset of Y, f a mapping of U into Y. Then f is said to be complex analytic if for each pair of elements x and y of Y with x in U, the function f(x + ξy) of the single complex variable ξ is analytic in ξ on some neighbourhood of the origin.

Let M be a w*-algebra (Von Neumann algebra), τ a semifinite, faithful, normal trace on M. There exists a w*-dense (i.e., dense in the σ(M, M*)-topology, where M* is the predual of M) *-ideal J of M such that τ is a linear functional on J, and

(where |x| = (x*x)1/2) is a norm on J. The completion of J in this norm is Lp(M, τ) (see [2], [8], [7], and [4]).

If M is abelian, in which case there exists a measure space (X, μ) such that M = L∞(X, μ), then Lp(X, τ) is isometric, in a natural way, to Lp(X, μ). A natural question to ask is whether this situation persists if M is non-abelian. In a previous paper [5] it was shown that it is not possible to have a linear mapping

Properties and characterizations for prime and semiprime rings have been provided by A. W. Goldie (2, 3). In a previous paper (1), the authors used the results of (2) to characterize prime and uniform prime modules. It is the aim of the present paper to generalize Goldie's work on semi-prime rings (3) to modules. In this setting certain new properties will appear.

Notationally, in the work to follow, the symbol R always denotes a ring and all R-modules will be right R-modules.

In the theory of rings an ideal C is said to be prime if and only if whenever AB ⊆ C for ideals A and B, then either A ⊆ C or B ⊆ C. A ring is prime if the zero ideal is prime.
