We shall say that a plane set D has the Kakeya property if a unit segment can be turned continuously in D through 360° back to its original position. The famous solution of this problem by A. S. Besicovitch (1; 2; 4; 5; 6), to the effect that there are sets of arbitrarily small area having the Kayeka property, leaves open the problem obtained by adding the new condition that the set D be also simply connected. Since we do not know whether there is an attainable minimum, we define the Kakeya constant K to be the greatest lower bound of areas of simply connected sets having the Kakeya property. We shall refer to such sets as Kakeya sets.

In this paper we introduce a new way of deforming convolution algebras and Fourier algebras on locally compact groups. We demonstrate that this new deformation allows us to reveal some information about the underlying groups by examining Banach algebra properties of deformed algebras. More precisely, we focus on representability as an operator algebra of deformed convolution algebras on compact connected Lie groups with connection to the real dimension of the underlying group. Similarly, we investigate complete representability as an operator algebra of deformed Fourier algebras on some finitely generated discrete groups with connection to the growth rate of the group.

Hyperbolic differential operators with constant coefficients introduced and studied systematically by Gårding (4), were characterized by the existence of the fundamental solution with some cone condition, according to Hörmander (6). Recently Ehrenpreis, extending the notion of hyperbolicity due to Gårding, has defined hyperbolic operators for distributions with compact support in the convolution sense. Under the hypothesis that the operator is invertible as a distribution, he has established a theorem analogous to the theorem of Hörmander mentioned above (3).

A theorem of Eisenbud, Griffith, and Robson states that if R is hereditary and noetherian (on both the left and right) then every proper homomorphic image of R is a generalized unserial ring (see, for example, [3, p. 244]). Singh [11, p. 883] states a converse: If R is a right bounded, noetherian prime ring, all of whose proper homomorphic images are generalized uniserial rings, then (every divisible right R-module is injective, so) R is right hereditary. (Actually, Singh omitted the clearly necessary “bounded” condition.) Singh's theorem generalizes results of [9, Proposition 15], [2, Theorem 2.1], and [8], about commutative rings.

We will call a semi-prime ring R essentially right bounded if each essential right ideal contains a two-sided ideal which is essential as a right ideal. In case R is prime, “essentially right bounded” coincides with “right bounded”.

Let $D\subset \mathbb{C}$ be a domain with $0\in D$. For $R>0$, let $\widehat{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}_{D}(R)$ denote the harmonic measure of $D\cap \{|z|=R\}$ at $0$ with respect to the domain $D\cap \{|z|<R\}$ and let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{D}(R)$ denote the harmonic measure of $\unicode[STIX]{x2202}D\cap \{|z|\geqslant R\}$ at $0$ with respect to $D$. The behavior of the functions $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{D}$ and $\widehat{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}_{D}$ near $\infty$ determines (in some sense) how large $D$ is. However, it is not known whether the functions $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{D}$ and $\widehat{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}_{D}$ always have the same behavior when $R$ tends to $\infty$. Obviously, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{D}(R)\leqslant \widehat{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}_{D}(R)$ for every $R>0$. Thus, the arising question, first posed by Betsakos, is the following: Does there exist a positive constant $C$ such that for all simply connected domains $D$ with $0\in D$ and all $R>0$,

In this paper weak Perron integrals are characterized as n-dimensional interval functions F which are additive, differentiable almost everywhere in the weak sense and which satisfy a new continuity condition concerning the singular set. Before, only one-dimensional Perron integrals were characterized by the theorem of Hake- Alexendrov-Looman, and analogous results for strong Perron integrals (which are best analyzed, but more restrictive) are not available in higher dimensions yet. In order to formulate our continuity condition we introduce an outer measure μ by means of a new weak variation of F which is required to vanish on all null sets. The same condition is also necessary and sufficient for the integral of the weak derivative to yield the original interval function. This “fundamental theorem” is split into two fundamental inequalities of very general nature which contain additional singular terms involving our variation. These inequalities are very useful also for Lebesgue integrals.

In (5),I considered two-term conditions in π-exact couples, of which the exact couple of Federer (7) is an example. Let M(X, Y)be the space of all maps from X to Y with the compact-open topology. Our aim in this paper is to construct a π-exact couple , where Xis a finite-dimensional (in the sense of Lebesgue) metric space and , a certain (rather large) class of spaces. Specifically, is the class of all topological spaces Xwhich possess the following property (P).

In § 5 it will be seen that contains all CW complexes and all metric absolute neighbourhood retracts (ANR)s.

In [18], the author initiated an investigation of compact, Banach-module-valued derivations of C*-algebras. In collaboration with C. A. Akemann [3] and S.-K. Tsui [16], he determined the structure of all compact and weakly compact, A-valued derivations of a C*-algebra A, and of all compact, B(H)-valued derivations of a C*-subalgebra of B(H), the algebra of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space H. In this paper, we begin the study of weakly compact, B(H)-valued derivations of C*-subalgebras of B(H).

In this paper, we determine in Lemma 4.1 and Theorems 4.3 and 4.10 the structure of δ when R is type I, using I. E. Segal's multiplicity theory [14] for type I von Neumann algebras and results of E. Christensen [6], [7] on B(H)-valued derivations of von Neumann algebras.

Throughout this note, an operator will always mean a bounded linear operator acting on a Hilbert space X into itself, unless otherwise stated. The class Cρ (0 < ρ < ∞ ) of operators, considered by Sz.-Nagy and Foiaş [5], is defined as follows: An operator T is in Cρ if Tnx = pPUnx for all x ∊ X, n = 1, 2, . . . , where U is a unitary operator on some Hilbert space Y containing X as a subspace, and P is the orthogonal projection of Y onto X. In [2] Holbrook defined the operator radii wρ(·) (0 < ρ ≦ ∞ ) as the generalized Minkowski distance functionals on the Banach algebra of bounded linear operators on X, i.e.,

We show that a certain category 𝓖 whose objects are pairs G ⊃ H of groups subject to simple axioms is equivalent to the category of ≥ 2-dimensional vector spaces and injective semi-linear maps; and deduce via the "Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry" that the category of ≥ 2-dimensional projective spaces is equivalent to the quotient of a suitable subcategory of 𝓖 by the least equivalence relation which identifies conjugation by any element of H with the identity automorphism of G.

Let (X, T, π) denote a flow, where X is a compact topological space metrizable by d, and T is a closed non-trivial subgroup of the reals under addition. T is recurrent if and only if for each and s > 0, there exists t > s such that x ∈ X implies . If T is almost-periodic, then T is both recurrent and distal. In §§ 4 and 5, it is shown that, under more stringent hypotheses, the recurrence of T is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for T to be distal. Let S be a closed non-trivial subgroup of T. It is shown in § 3 that T is recurrent if and only if S is recurrent. From this result, we obtain a solution to a problem posed by Nemyckiĭ (16, p. 492, Problem 6).

In this paper we use a particular kind of weighted Sobolev space and pseudo-differential operators to study H3s propagation of singularities for the solution u ∊ Hs of the equations with second order.

Let $A={{({{a}_{j,k}})}_{j,k\ge 1}}$ be a non-negative matrix. In this paper, we characterize those $A$ for which ${{\left\| A \right\|}_{E,F}}$ are determined by their actions on decreasing sequences, where $E$ and $F$ are suitable normed Riesz spaces of sequences. In particular, our results can apply to the following spaces: ${{\ell }_{p}}$, $d(w,p)$, and ${{\ell }_{p}}(w)$. The results established here generalize ones given by Bennett; Chen, Luor, and Ou; Jameson; and Jameson and Lashkaripour.

A sequence, a1 < a2 < a3 < …, of positive integers is called lacunary if the difference sequence dn = an+l — an tends to infinity as n → ∞.

In several recent papers we have made use of these sequences in analysis and combinatorics. In [6] we show that the class of all sets which are either finite or the range of a lacunary sequence is “full” in the sense that if (tk) is a real sequence and for each then (tk) is an l1 sequence, that is,

In [3] the class of all finite unions of sets of is shown to consist of exactly those sets of integers, A, whose characteristic sequence, χA, is in the well known summability space bs + c0. More recently, in [1], we study lacunary sequences in connection with the conjecture of P.

Throughout the paper, G will denote an additively written, but not always abelian, group of finite order n; and X = (xij) will denote a square matrix of order n with entries from G and whose rows and columns are numbered 0, 1, …, n − 1. We call X a cartesian array (afforded by G) if

By a theorem of Jungnickel (see Theorem 2.2 in [5]), the transpose of a cartesian array is also a cartesian array. We call G a cartesian group if there is a cartesian array X afforded by G. In this case, we also call (G, X) a cartesian pair.

The following paper defines a new type of ordering of higher level on a commutative ring. This definition allows the set of all orderings of level n to be given a topology which we show is consistent with the topology of the real spectrum.

In a recent paper [6], P. Seibt has obtained the following result: Let k be a field of characteristic 0, k[T1, … , Tr] the polynomial ring in r indeterminates over k, and let P be a prime ideal of k[T1, … , Tr]. Then a polynomial F belongs to the n-th symbolic power P(n) of P if and only if all higher derivatives of F from the 0-th up to the (n – l)-st order belong to P.

In this work we shall naturally generalize this result so as to be valid for primes of the polynomial ring over a perfect field k. Actually, we shall get a generalization as a corollary to a theorem which asserts: For regular primes P in a k-algebra R of finite type, a certain differential filtration of R associated with P coincides with the symbolic power filtration (P(n))n≧0.

Danicic [2] obtained an analogous result for the fractional parts of θxk and in 1967 Davenport [4] generalized Heilbronn's result to polynomials of degree with no constant term. The last condition is essential, for if there is a constant term then no analogous result can hold (see Koksma [7, Kap. 6 SatzlO]).
