In the recent paper [8] Phillips has shown that for each prime p there are 2ℵ0 non-isomorphic 2-generatecl p-groups. This same result was obtained independently by S. Jeanes and J. S, Wilson (unpublished) who show that the groups constructed in [1] have 2ℵ0 non-isomorphic images. The groups in both of these proofs all have infinite exponent. In this paper we show that, for large enough primes p, there are 2ℵ0 non-isomorphic 2-generated groups of exponent p2.

Let RG denote the group ring of a group G over a commutative ring R with unity. We recall that a group is said to be an FC-group if all its conjugacy classes are finite.

In [6], S. K. Sehgal and H. Zassenhaus gave necessary and sufficient conditions for U(RG) to be an FC-group when R is either Z, the ring of rational integers, or a field of characteristic 0.

One of the authors considered this problem for group rings over infinite fields of characteristic p ≠ 2 in [5] and G. Cliffs and S. K. Sehgal [1] completed the study for arbitrary fields. Also, group rings of finite groups over commutative rings containing Z(p), a localization of Z over a prime ideal (p) were studied in [4].

A Lie admissible algebra is a non-associative algebra A such that A− is a Lie algebra where A− denotes the anti-commutative algebra with vector space A and with commutation [X, Y] = XY – YX as multiplication; see [1; 2; 5]. Next let L−(X): A− → A−: Y → [X, Y] and H = {L−(X): X ∊ A−}; then, since A− is a Lie algebra, we see that H is contained in the derivation algebra of A− and consequently the direct sum g = A − ⊕ H can be naturally made into a Lie algebra with multiplication [PQ] given by: P = X + L−(U), Q = Y + L−(V) ∊ g, then

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a compact simple Lie algebra of dimension $d$. It is a classical result that the convolution of any $d$ non-trivial, $G$-invariant, orbital measures is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure on $\mathfrak{g}$, and the sum of any $d$ non-trivial orbits has non-empty interior. The number $d$ was later reduced to the rank of the Lie algebra (or rank +1 in the case of type ${{A}_{n}}$). More recently, the minimal integer $k\,=\,k\left( X \right)$ such that the $k$-fold convolution of the orbital measure supported on the orbit generated by $X$ is an absolutely continuous measure was calculated for each $X\,\in \,\mathfrak{g}$.

In this paper $\mathfrak{g}$ is any of the classical, compact, simple Lie algebras. We characterize the tuples $\left( {{X}_{1}},\,.\,.\,.\,,\,{{X}_{L}} \right)$, with ${{X}_{i}}\,\in \,\mathfrak{g}$, which have the property that the convolution of the $L$-orbital measures supported on the orbits generated by the ${{X}_{i}}$ is absolutely continuous, and, equivalently, the sum of their orbits has non-empty interior. The characterization depends on the Lie type of $\mathfrak{g}$ and the structure of the annihilating roots of the ${{X}_{i}}$. Such a characterization was previously known only for type ${{A}_{n}}$.

A basic problem in the theory of partially ordered vector spaces is to characterise those cones on which every order-isomorphism is linear. We show that this is the case for every Archimedean cone that equals the inf-sup hull of the sum of its engaged extreme rays. This condition is milder than existing ones and is satisfied by, for example, the cone of positive operators in the space of bounded self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space. We also give a general form of order-isomorphisms on the inf-sup hull of the sum of all extreme rays of the cone, which extends results of Artstein–Avidan and Slomka to infinite-dimensional partially ordered vector spaces, and prove the linearity of homogeneous order-isomorphisms in a variety of new settings.

Several characterizations of weak cotype 2 and weak Hilbert spaces are given in terms of basis constants and other structural invariants of Banach spaces. For finite-dimensional spaces, characterizations depending on subspaces of fixed proportional dimension are proved.

Let G be a connected amenable locally compact group with left Haar measure λ. In an earlier work Jenkins claimed that exponential boundedness of G is equivalent to each of the following conditions: (a) every open subsemigroup S ⊆ G is amenable; (b) given and a compact K ⊆ G with nonempty interior there exists an integer n such that (c) given a signed measure of compact support and nonnegative nonzero f ∈ L∞(G), the condition v * f ≥ 0 implies v(G) ≥ 0. However, Jenkins‚ proof of this equivalence is not complete. We give a complete proof. The crucial part of the argument relies on the following two results: (1) an open σ-compact subsemigroup S ⊆ G is amenable if and only if there exists an absolutely continuous probability measure μ on S such that lim for every s ∈ S; (2) G is exponentially bounded if and only if for every nonempty open subset U ⊆ G.

We define Schwartz functions, tempered functions, and tempered distributions on (possibly singular) real algebraic varieties. We prove that all classical properties of these spaces, defined previously on affine spaces and on Nash manifolds, also hold in the case of affine real algebraic varieties, and give partial results for the non-affine case.

It is a classical result of mathematics that there is an intimate connection between linear algebra and projective or affine geometry. Thus, many algebraic results can be given a geometric interpretation, and geometric theorems can quite often be proved more easily by algebraic methods. In this paper we apply topological ideas to geometric lattices, structures which provide the framework for the study of abstract linear independence, and obtain affine geometry from the mappings that preserve the closure operator that is associated with these lattices. These mappings are closely connected with semi-linear transformations on a vector space, and thus linear algebra and affine geometry are derived from the study of a certain closure operator and mappings which preserve it, even if the “space” is finite.

This paper expresses the character of certain depth-zero supercuspidal representations of the rank-2 symplectic group as the Fourier transform of a finite linear combination of regular elliptic orbital integrals—an expression which is ideally suited for the study of the stability of those characters. Building on work of F. Murnaghan, our proof involves Lusztig’s Generalised Springer Correspondence in a fundamental way, and also makes use of some results on elliptic orbital integrals proved elsewhere by the author using Moy-Prasad filtrations of $p$-adic Lie algebras. Two applications of the main result are considered toward the end of the paper.

The main result of the paper is a reciprocity law which proves that compatible systems of semisimple, abelian mod $p$ representations (of arbitrary dimension) of absolute Galois groups of number fields, arise from Hecke characters. In the last section analogs for Galois groups of function fields of these results are explored, and a question is raised whose answer seems to require developments in transcendence theory in characteristic $p$.

In (2), Fitzpatrick and Ford defined a class of spaces which they called order totally paracompact. This class of spaces is significant since the order totally paracompact metric spaces constitute the largest known class of spaces for which the small and large inductive dimensions coincide. In this paper we shall consider a class of spaces containing the class of order totally paracompact spaces; we shall call these spaces order paracompact. We shall establish the relationship of this class to the more familiar classes of spaces and obtain an invariance theorem for order paracompact spaces analogous to theorems obtained for various other classes.

In what follows, no separation axioms are assumed unless specifically mentioned. Thus, for example, a Lindelöf space is not taken to be Hausdorff without making the further assumption. Therefore, a Lindelöf space is not necessarily paracompact.

We prove the Gross–Deligne conjecture on CM periods for motives associated with ${{H}^{2}}$ of certain surfaces fibered over the projective line. Then we prove for the same motives a formula which expresses the ${{K}_{1}}$-regulators in terms of hypergeometric functions $_{3}{{F}_{2}}$, and obtain a new example of non-trivial regulators.

Among the variety of integrals which have been devised for integrating vector-valued functions the most widely used is that of Bochner (2), perhaps because of the simplicity of its formulation. Other approaches, including one by Birkhoff (1), have yielded more general integrals yet none of them seems to have supplanted the Bochner integral to a significant extent.

In this paper we consider linear systems of $\mathbb{P}{{}^{2}}$ with all but one of the base points of multiplicity 5. We give an explicit way to evaluate the dimensions of such systems.

Motivated by works on extension sets in standard domains, we introduce a notion of the Carathéodory set that seems better suited for the methods used in proofs of results on characterization of extension sets. A special stress is put on a class of two-dimensional submanifolds in the tridisc that not only turns out to be Carathéodory but also provides examples of two-dimensional domains for which the celebrated Lempert Theorem holds. Additionally, a recently introduced notion of universal sets for the Carathéodory extremal problem is studied and new results on domains admitting (no) finite universal sets are given.

This paper deals with some applications in the results obtained in “Numerical Invariants in Homotopical Algebra” [7]. The applications are mainly concerned with the homotopy theory of modules developed by P. J. Hilton [4]. However we have to restrict the class of rings because we want to obtain a situation where the axioms of Quillen [6] hold good. This paper is organised as follows.

This paper gives another construction of (0, p)-forms on a complex analytic space and of the operator. This construction is independent of the one in [1] and apart from the general result of Section 1 of [1], it can be read independently. As in [1], the hypotheses on S are the following: S has normal singularities, its singular locus X is smooth, the exceptional divisor in a desingularization of S is irreducible.
