Recall the classical criterion for the complete decomposability of exterior vectors: the completely decomposable vectors in ∧pRn, R a field, are precisely the “Plücker vectors,” i.e. those whose coordinates (relative to the standard bases for ∧pRn) satisfy the Plücker equations. For R an arbitrary commutative ring, completely decomposable exterior vectors are still Plücker vectors, but the converse is not generally true. Rings for which the converse is true (for all 1 ≤ p ≤ n) are called Towber rings. Noetherian Towber rings are regular and, in fact, are characterized by the property that every Plücker vector in ∧2R4 is completely decomposable. (See [10] for these two results as well as for the above mentioned facts.) The present note develops a new characterization of Towber rings, combining it with results of Kleiner [9] and Estes-Matijevic [5] in (1) below.

Let Mn be a Riemannian manifold of dimension n ≧ 2 and class C3, (gtj) the symmetric matrix of the positive definite metric of Mn, and (gij) the inverse matrix of (gtj), and denote by and R = gijRij the operator of covariant differentiation with respect to gij, the Riemann tensor, the Ricci tensor and the scalar curvature of Mn respectively.

Let K be a field complete for a proper valuation (absolute value) v. It is classic that a finite-dimensional K-vector space E admits a unique Hausdorff topology making it a topological K-vector space, and that that topology is the “cartesian product topology” in the sense that for any basis c1 …, cn of E, is a topological isomorphism from Kn to E [1, Chap. I, § 2, no. 3; 2, Chap. VI, § 5, no. 2]. It follows readily that any multilinear mapping from Em to a Hausdorff topological K-vector space is continuous. In particular, any multiplication on E making it a K-algebra is continuous in both variables. If for some such multiplication E is a field extension of K, then by valuation theory the unique Hausdorff topology of E is given by a valuation (absolute value) extending v.

Let A be a commutative ring, and let Proj A[t0, ti]. By a vector bundle on X we mean a locally free sheaf of finite rank on X. Set t = t1/to. Then X is made up of two affine pieces U1 = Spec A[t], and U2 = Spec A[t-1]. Let P(R) denote the category of finitely generated projective modules over the ring R. The category of vector bundles on X is equivalent to the category of triples (P1,f1, P2), where P1 ∊ 𝓅 (A[t]), P2 ∊ 𝓅(A[t-1]), and

is an A[t, t-1] -isomorphism. In [2], the category of vector bundles on is denned directly in this manner, without first defining (so that one could work over a non-commutative ring). We prove that if A is a Krull ring (or a Noetherian ring with connected spec) of dimension > 0, then there is an indecomposable vector bundle of rank n on X, for every positive integer n.

We define Schwartz functions, tempered functions, and tempered distributions on (possibly singular) real algebraic varieties. We prove that all classical properties of these spaces, defined previously on affine spaces and on Nash manifolds, also hold in the case of affine real algebraic varieties, and give partial results for the non-affine case.

Among the variety of integrals which have been devised for integrating vector-valued functions the most widely used is that of Bochner (2), perhaps because of the simplicity of its formulation. Other approaches, including one by Birkhoff (1), have yielded more general integrals yet none of them seems to have supplanted the Bochner integral to a significant extent.

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a compact simple Lie algebra of dimension $d$. It is a classical result that the convolution of any $d$ non-trivial, $G$-invariant, orbital measures is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure on $\mathfrak{g}$, and the sum of any $d$ non-trivial orbits has non-empty interior. The number $d$ was later reduced to the rank of the Lie algebra (or rank +1 in the case of type ${{A}_{n}}$). More recently, the minimal integer $k\,=\,k\left( X \right)$ such that the $k$-fold convolution of the orbital measure supported on the orbit generated by $X$ is an absolutely continuous measure was calculated for each $X\,\in \,\mathfrak{g}$.

In this paper $\mathfrak{g}$ is any of the classical, compact, simple Lie algebras. We characterize the tuples $\left( {{X}_{1}},\,.\,.\,.\,,\,{{X}_{L}} \right)$, with ${{X}_{i}}\,\in \,\mathfrak{g}$, which have the property that the convolution of the $L$-orbital measures supported on the orbits generated by the ${{X}_{i}}$ is absolutely continuous, and, equivalently, the sum of their orbits has non-empty interior. The characterization depends on the Lie type of $\mathfrak{g}$ and the structure of the annihilating roots of the ${{X}_{i}}$. Such a characterization was previously known only for type ${{A}_{n}}$.

A Lie admissible algebra is a non-associative algebra A such that A− is a Lie algebra where A− denotes the anti-commutative algebra with vector space A and with commutation [X, Y] = XY – YX as multiplication; see [1; 2; 5]. Next let L−(X): A− → A−: Y → [X, Y] and H = {L−(X): X ∊ A−}; then, since A− is a Lie algebra, we see that H is contained in the derivation algebra of A− and consequently the direct sum g = A − ⊕ H can be naturally made into a Lie algebra with multiplication [PQ] given by: P = X + L−(U), Q = Y + L−(V) ∊ g, then

and note that for any P, [PP] = 0 so that [PQ] = −[QP] and the Jacobi identity for g follows from the fact that A− is Lie.

We consider the stochastic difference equation ${{\eta }_{k}}\,=\,{{\xi }_{k}}\phi \left( {{\eta }_{k-1}} \right),\,\,k\,\in \,\mathbb{Z}$ on a locally compact group $G$, where $\phi $ is an automorphism of $G$, ${{\xi }_{K}}$ are given $G$-valued random variables, and ${{\eta }_{k}}$ are unknown $G$-valued random variables. This equation was considered by Tsirelson and Yor on a one-dimensional torus. We consider the case when ${{\xi }_{K}}$ have a common law $\mu $ and prove that if $G$ is a distal group and $\phi $ is a distal automorphism of $G$ and if the equation has a solution, then extremal solutions of the equation are in one-to-one correspondence with points on the coset space $K\backslash G$ for some compact subgroup $K$ of $G$ such that $\mu $ is supported on $Kz\,=\,z\phi \left( K \right)$ for any $z$ in the support of $\mu $. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of solutions to the equation.

In (2), Fitzpatrick and Ford defined a class of spaces which they called order totally paracompact. This class of spaces is significant since the order totally paracompact metric spaces constitute the largest known class of spaces for which the small and large inductive dimensions coincide. In this paper we shall consider a class of spaces containing the class of order totally paracompact spaces; we shall call these spaces order paracompact. We shall establish the relationship of this class to the more familiar classes of spaces and obtain an invariance theorem for order paracompact spaces analogous to theorems obtained for various other classes.

In what follows, no separation axioms are assumed unless specifically mentioned. Thus, for example, a Lindelöf space is not taken to be Hausdorff without making the further assumption. Therefore, a Lindelöf space is not necessarily paracompact.

This note provides a correct proof of the result claimed by the second author that locally compact normal spaces are collectionwise Hausdorff in certain models obtained by forcing with a coherent Souslin tree. A novel feature of the proof is the use of saturation of the non-stationary ideal on ${{\omega }_{1}}$, as well as of a strong form of Chang's Conjecture. Together with other improvements, this enables the consistent characterization of locally compact hereditarily paracompact spaces as those locally compact, hereditarily normal spaces that do not include a copy of ${{\omega }_{1}}$.

Several characterizations of weak cotype 2 and weak Hilbert spaces are given in terms of basis constants and other structural invariants of Banach spaces. For finite-dimensional spaces, characterizations depending on subspaces of fixed proportional dimension are proved.

Following Radford's proof of Lagrange's theorem for pointed Hopf algebras, we prove Lagrange‘s theorem for Hopf monoids in the category of connected species. As a corollary, we obtain necessary conditions for a given subspecies $\mathbf{k}$ of a Hopf monoid $\mathbf{h}$ to be a Hopf submonoid: the quotient of any one of the generating series of $\mathbf{h}$ by the corresponding generating series of $\mathbf{k}$ must have nonnegative coefficients. Other corollaries include a necessary condition for a sequence of nonnegative integers to be the dimension sequence of a Hopf monoid in the form of certain polynomial inequalities and of a set-theoretic Hopf monoid in the form of certain linear inequalities. The latter express that the binomial transform of the sequence must be nonnegative.

Fontaine described the category of formal groups over the ring of Witt vectors over a finite field of characteristic $p$ with the aid of triples consisting of the module of logarithms, the Dieudonné module, and the morphism from the former to the latter. We propose an explicit construction for the kernels in this category in term of Fontaine's triples. The construction is applied to the formal norm homomorphism in the case of an unramified extension of ${{\mathbb{Q}}_{p}}$ and of a totally ramified extension of degree less or equal than $p$ . A similar consideration applied to a global extension allows us to establish the existence of a strict isomorphism between the formal norm torus and a formal group law coming from $L$ -series.

Generalizing the notion of invariant subspaces on the 2-dimensional torus ${{T}^{2}}$, we study the structure of ${{A}_{\phi }}$-invariant subspaces of ${{L}^{2}}({{T}^{2}})$. A complete description is given of ${{A}_{\phi }}$-invariant subspaces that satisfy conditions similar to those studied by Mandrekar, Nakazi, and Takahashi.

Throughout this paper all rings will have unity and all modules will be unital.

If X ⊂ R, then r(X) (respectively, l(X)) denotes the right (left) annihilator of x.

An element d of R is called right (left) regular if r(d) = 0 (1(d) = 0). An element which is both right and left regular is called regular.

Let RG denote the group ring of a group G over a commutative ring R with unity. We recall that a group is said to be an FC-group if all its conjugacy classes are finite.

In [6], S. K. Sehgal and H. Zassenhaus gave necessary and sufficient conditions for U(RG) to be an FC-group when R is either Z, the ring of rational integers, or a field of characteristic 0.

One of the authors considered this problem for group rings over infinite fields of characteristic p ≠ 2 in [5] and G. Cliffs and S. K. Sehgal [1] completed the study for arbitrary fields. Also, group rings of finite groups over commutative rings containing Z(p), a localization of Z over a prime ideal (p) were studied in [4].

The fact that Rolle's theorem on critical points of a real differentiable function does not hold in general for analytic functions of a complex variable raises a natural question [7, p. 21] as to whether or not it can be generalized to polynomials, the simplest subclass of analytic functions. While attempting to answer this and other related problems in [4, 5, 6], Lucas proved that all the critical points of a nonconstant polynomial f lie in the convex hull of the set of zeros of f (see Theorem (6.1) in [7]). Walsh [12] has shown that Lucas’ theorem is equivalent to the following result [7, Theorem (6.2)], namely: Any convex circular region which contains all the zeros of a polynomial f also contains all the zeros of its derivative f′.

The 8-cage (3) may be defined as the simplest cubic graph having no circuit of fewer than eight edges. To construct it we first observe that it must contain a tree T whose vertices are of degrees 1 and 3 and in which each vertex of degree 1 is separated by an arc of just three edges from a central edge AB. These properties fix the structure of T uniquely.
