Sets on the boundary of a complementary component of a continuum in the plane have been of interest since the early 1920s. Curry and Mayer defined the buried points of a plane continuum to be the points in the continuum which were not on the boundary of any complementary component. Motivated by their investigations of Julia sets, they asked what happens if the set of buried points of a plane continuum is totally disconnected and nonempty. Curry, Mayer, and Tymchatyn showed that in that case the continuum is Suslinian, i.e., it does not contain an uncountable collection of nondegenerate pairwise disjoint subcontinua. In an answer to a question of Curry et al., van Mill and Tuncali constructed a plane continuum whose buried point set was totally disconnected, nonempty, and one-dimensional at each point of a countably infinite set. In this paper, we show that the van Mill–Tuncali example was the best possible in the sense that whenever the buried set is totally disconnected, it is one-dimensional at each of at most countably many points. As a corollary, we find that the buried set cannot be almost zero-dimensional unless it is zero-dimensional. We also construct locally connected van Mill–Tuncali type examples.

We prove that every homeomorphism of a compact manifold with dimension one has zero topological emergence, whereas in dimension greater than one the topological emergence of a $C^0-$generic homeomorphism is maximal, equal to the dimension of the manifold. We also show that the metric emergence of a continuous self-map on compact metric space has the intermediate value property.

We discuss the question of extending homeomorphisms between closed subsets of the Cantor cube $D^{\tau }$. It is established that any homeomorphism between two closed negligible subsets of $D^{\tau }$ can be extended to an autohomeomorphism of $D^{\tau }$.

We compute the generator rank of a subhomogeneous $C^*\!$-algebra in terms of the covering dimension of the pieces of its primitive ideal space corresponding to irreducible representations of a fixed dimension. We deduce that every $\mathcal {Z}$-stable approximately subhomogeneous algebra has generator rank one, which means that a generic element in such an algebra is a generator.

This leads to a strong solution of the generator problem for classifiable, simple, nuclear $C^*\!$-algebras: a generic element in each such algebra is a generator. Examples of Villadsen show that this is not the case for all separable, simple, nuclear $C^*\!$-algebras.

We introduce the point degree spectrum of a represented space as a substructure of the Medvedev degrees, which integrates the notion of Turing degrees, enumeration degrees, continuous degrees and so on. The notion of point degree spectrum creates a connection among various areas of mathematics, including computability theory, descriptive set theory, infinite-dimensional topology and Banach space theory. Through this new connection, for instance, we construct a family of continuum many infinite-dimensional Cantor manifolds with property C whose Borel structures at an arbitrary finite rank are mutually nonisomorphic. This resolves a long-standing question by Jayne and strengthens various theorems in infinite-dimensional topology such as Pol’s solution to Alexandrov’s old problem.

We consider continuous free semigroup actions generated by a family $(g_y)_{y \,\in \, Y}$ of continuous endomorphisms of a compact metric space $(X,d)$ , subject to a random walk $\mathbb P_\nu =\nu ^{\mathbb N}$ defined on a shift space $Y^{\mathbb N}$ , where $(Y, d_Y)$ is a compact metric space with finite upper box dimension and $\nu $ is a Borel probability measure on Y. With the aim of elucidating the impact of the random walk on the metric mean dimension, we prove a variational principle which relates the metric mean dimension of the semigroup action with the corresponding notions for the associated skew product and the shift map $\sigma $ on $Y^{\mathbb {N}}$ , and compare them with the upper box dimension of Y. In particular, we obtain exact formulas whenever $\nu $ is homogeneous and has full support. We also discuss several examples to enlighten the roles of the homogeneity, of the support and of the upper box dimension of the measure $\nu $ , and to test the scope of our results.

We prove that for $C^0$ -generic homeomorphisms, acting on a compact smooth boundaryless manifold with dimension greater than one, the upper metric mean dimension with respect to the smooth metric coincides with the dimension of the manifold. As an application, we show that the upper box dimension of the set of periodic points of a $C^0$ -generic homeomorphism is equal to the dimension of the manifold. In the case of continuous interval maps, we prove that each level set for the metric mean dimension with respect to the Euclidean distance is $C^0$ -dense in the space of continuous endomorphisms of $[0,1]$ with the uniform topology. Moreover, the maximum value is attained at a $C^0$ -generic subset of continuous interval maps and a dense subset of metrics topologically equivalent to the Euclidean distance.

In [12], John Stillwell wrote, ‘finding the exact strength of the Brouwer invariance theorems seems to me one of the most interesting open problems in reverse mathematics.’ In this article, we solve Stillwell’s problem by showing that (some forms of) the Brouwer invariance theorems are equivalent to the weak König’s lemma over the base system ${\sf RCA}_0$ . In particular, there exists an explicit algorithm which, whenever the weak König’s lemma is false, constructs a topological embedding of $\mathbb {R}^4$ into $\mathbb {R}^3$ .

Consider a definably complete uniformly locally o-minimal expansion of the second kind of a densely linearly ordered abelian group. Let $f:X \rightarrow R^n$ be a definable map, where X is a definable set and R is the universe of the structure. We demonstrate the inequality $\dim (f(X)) \leq \dim (X)$ in this paper. As a corollary, we get that the set of the points at which f is discontinuous is of dimension smaller than $\dim (X)$. We also show that the structure is definably Baire in the course of the proof of the inequality.

We investigate C-sets in almost zero-dimensional spaces, showing that closed $\sigma $ C-sets are C-sets. As corollaries, we prove that every rim- $\sigma $ -compact almost zero-dimensional space is zero-dimensional and that each cohesive almost zero-dimensional space is nowhere rational. To show that these results are sharp, we construct a rim-discrete connected set with an explosion point. We also show that every cohesive almost zero-dimensional subspace of $($ Cantor set $)\!\times \mathbb R$ is nowhere dense.

We develop the theory of Krull dimension for S4-algebras and Heyting algebras. This leads to the concept of modal Krull dimension for topological spaces. We compare modal Krull dimension to other well-known dimension functions, and show that it can detect differences between topological spaces that Krull dimension is unable to detect. We prove that for a T1-space to have a finite modal Krull dimension can be described by an appropriate generalization of the well-known concept of a nodec space. This, in turn, can be described by modal formulas zemn which generalize the well-known Zeman formula zem. We show that the modal logic S4.Zn := S4 + zemn is the basic modal logic of T1-spaces of modal Krull dimension ≤ n, and we construct a countable dense-in-itself ω-resolvable Tychonoff space Zn of modal Krull dimension n such that S4.Zn is complete with respect to Zn. This yields a version of the McKinsey-Tarski theorem for S4.Zn. We also show that no logic in the interval [S4n+1S4.Zn) is complete with respect to any class of T1-spaces.

We prove the following result announced by the second and third authors: Any homogeneous, metric $ANR$-continuum is a $V_{G}^{n}$-continuum provided ${{\dim}_{G}}X\,=\,n\,\ge \,1$ and ${{\overset{\vee }{\mathop{H}}\,}^{n}}\left( X;\,G \right)\,\ne \,0$, where $G$ is a principal ideal domain. This implies that any homogeneous $n$-dimensional metric $ANR$-continuum is a ${{V}^{n}}$-continuum in the sense of Alexandroff. We also prove that any finite-dimensional cyclic in dimension $n$ homogeneous metric continuum $X$, satisfying ${{\overset{\vee }{\mathop{H}}\,}^{n}}\left( X;\,G \right)\,\ne \,0$ for some group $G$ and $n\,\ge \,1$, cannot be separated by a compactum $K$ with ${{\overset{\vee }{\mathop{H}}\,}^{n-1}}\left( K;\,G \right)\,=\,0$ and ${{\dim}_{G}}K\,\le \,n\,-\,1$. This provides a partial answer to a question of Kallipoliti–Papasoglu as to whether a two-dimensional homogeneous Peano continuum can be separated by arcs.

Consider the wreath product $H\,\wr \,G$, where $H\,\ne \,1$ is finite and $G$ is finitely generated. We show that the Assouad–Nagata dimension ${{\dim}_{AN}}\left( H\,\wr \,G \right)$ of $H\,\wr \,G$ depends on the growth of $G$ as follows: if the growth of $G$ is not bounded by a linear function, then ${{\dim}_{AN}}\left( H\,\wr \,G \right)\,=\,\infty$; otherwise ${{\dim}_{AN}}\left( H\,\wr \,G \right)\,=\,{{\dim}_{AN}}\left( G \right)\,\le \,1$.

We give sufficient conditions for the following problem: given a topological space $X$, a metric space $Y$, a subspace $Z$ of $Y$, and a continuous map $f$ from $X$ to $Y$, is it possible, by applying to $f$ an arbitrarily small perturbation, to ensure that $f\left( {{X}^{'}} \right)$ does not meet $Z$? We also give a relative variant: if $f\left( X\prime \right)$ does not meet $Z$ for a certain subset ${X}'\subset X$, then we may keep $f$ unchanged on ${X}'$. We also develop a variant for continuous sections of fibrations and discuss some applications to matrix perturbation theory.

In this paper, we investigate a proper $\text{CAT(0)}$ space $(X,\,d)$ that is homeomorphic to ${{\mathbb{R}}^{2}}$ and we show that the asymptotic dimension asdim$(X,\,d)$ is equal to 2.

We characterize maps between $n$-dimensional Nöbeling manifolds that can be approximated by homeomorphisms.

Let $f:X\to Y$ be a $\sigma$-perfect $k$-dimensional surjective map of metrizable spaces such that dim $Y\le m$. It is shown that for every positive integer $p$ with $p\le m+k+1$ there exists a dense ${{G}_{\delta }}-\text{subset}\,\mathcal{H}\left( k,m,p \right)$ of $C\left( X,{{\mathbb{I}}^{k+p}} \right)$ with the source limitation topology such that each fiber of $f\Delta g$, $g\in \mathcal{H}\left( k,m,p \right)$, contains at most $\max \left\{ k+m-p+2,1 \right\}$ points. This result provides a proof the following conjectures of S. Bogatyi, V. Fedorchuk and J. van Mill. Let $f:X\to Y$ be a $k$-dimensional map between compact metric spaces with dim $Y\le m$. Then: (1) there exists a map $h:X\to {{\mathbb{I}}^{m+2k}}$ such that $f\Delta h:\,X\to Y\times {{\mathbb{I}}^{m+2k}}$ is 2-to-one provided $k\ge 1$; (2) there exists a map $h:X\to {{\mathbb{I}}^{m+k+1}}$ such that $f\Delta h:X\to Y\times {{\mathbb{I}}^{m+k+1}}$ is $\left( k+1 \right)$-to-one.

We show that every compactum has cohomological dimension 1 with respect to a finitely generated nilpotent group $G$ whenever it has cohomological dimension 1 with respect to the abelianization of $G$. This is applied to the extension theory to obtain a cohomological dimension theory condition for a finite-dimensional compactum $X$ for extendability of every map from a closed subset of $X$ into a nilpotent $\text{CW}$-complex $M$ with finitely generated homotopy groups over all of $X$.

Applying the Sullivan conjecture we construct compacta of certain cohomological and extensional dimensions.

We study Banach-Mazur compacta Q(n), that is, the sets of all isometry classes of n-dimensional Banach spaces topologized by the Banach-Mazur metric. Our main result is that Q(2) is homeomorphic to the compactification of a Hilbert cube manifold by a point, for we prove that Qg(2) = Q(2) / {Eucl.} is a Hilbert cube manifold. As a corollary it follows that Q(2) is not homogeneous.
