The compositions of fluid inclusions hosted in emerald and quartz (the Maria deposit, Mozambique) were studied using microthermometric and Raman microprobe techniques. The fluid inclusions in the emerald contain fluids within the Na-Ca-Mg-(HCO3)−-(CO3)2−-Cl-H2O system saturated in carbonic acid brines. Nahcolite is a main daughter solid phase within the fluid inclusions. The mean nahcolite and NaCl contents are 25 and 5 wt.%, respectively. Mg-calcite, magnesite, calcite and aragonite are also identified as daughter phases in the fluid inclusions. Many fluid inclusions show necked-down appearance. Groups of nahcolite crystals often make up ∼50 vol.% of necked-down inclusions. It seems that zones of fluid inclusions with numerous birefringent solid phases are distinctive of the Maria emerald deposit. The likely conditions of emerald growth are 400 < T < 500°C and 3 < P < 4 kbar.

The Laytonville Quarry exotic block contains a series of deep-ocean sediments of varying Fe: Mn, Fe:Al and Fe2+ : Fe3+ contents, but all enriched in Fe-Mn carbonates. These sediments have a complex metamorphic history that has involved the early development of aegirine and garnet, followed by various phases of ‘secondary’ mineral growth, all of which required the addition of water to the metamorphic assemblages under high-P, low-T conditions. During the course of an early hydration episode deerite formed within most of the ironstones, and zussmanite in certain Fe-rich, Mn-poor pelites. At a later, and apparently lower pressure period in the metamorphic history, howieite, riebeckite, stilpnomelane, and a more manganous variety of zussmanite (ZU2) have overtaken much of the earlier mineralogy. Subsequent to this, and contemporaneous with the development of the tremolite-talc exotic block rind assemblage, there is a minor development of minnesotaite and ekmanite. During the course of the metamorphism the ironstones have become enriched in K and Na, necessary to form the blueschist meta-ironstone mineralogy. Such rocks therefore have the potential to reveal details of fluid expulsion within the subduction zone.

Amphibolites in the Mesozoic part of the parautochthonous Lower Schieferhülle (LSH), the allochthonous Upper Schieferhülle (USH) and the overlying Austroalpine basement (AA) in and around the western Tauern Window (Eastern Alps) suffered a progressive Alpine deformation. Lineations and foliations L1-S1, L2-S2 defined by preferentially oriented (Na-Ca) amphiboles as well as F3 folds and further foliations Smyl and S4 in the metabasites are structures of successive deformational stages with a constant W-E main extension axis of strain. The (Na-Ca) amphiboles in assemblages with epidote, chlorite, albite/oligoclase and quartz are zoned with similar continuous zonation trends from early actinolite in the cores to magnesio-hornblende and tschermakitic hornblende, and from magnesio-hornblende to late actinolite in the rims in the three lithostratigraphic units. Geothermobarometry involving tremolite-edenite and (pargasite-hastingsite)-tremolite end-member equilibria in amphiboles allowed us to reconstruct prograde-retrograde P-T paths for the Alpine greenschist-amphibolite facies event. The paths passed P/Tmax at 6–7 kbar/600°C. Similar shapes of the paths in AA, USH and Mesozoic LSH indicate a common metamorphic history and a stacking of these units prior to or during the pre-Pmax evolution. Moderate P-T ratios are characteristic for the temperature-dominated compression paths and indicate continental collisional rather than subduction zone metamorphism. The middle to late Alpine greenschist-amphibolite facies event appears as an independent metamorphism along a complete P-T loop which may have followed an earlier and poorly documented high-pressure/low-temperature event.

This study describes the occurrences of sulfate minerals in mines of the Czech part of the Upper Silesian Basin. This mineralization originates from the oxidation of Fe disulfides contained in the coal matrix and enclosing sediments. The oxidation occurs in the presence of formational brines and chemotrophic bacteria. The brines have a pH between 6.3 and 8.5 and total solute content of up to 300 g/l. They are rich in Na, Ca, K, Mg, Ba and Sr and Cl– is the major anion. The minerals of the pickeringite–halotrichite series with coexisting magnesiocopiapite are formed primarily in drier places and areas where the water is only slightly mineralized. In more humid places where the brines are more concentrated, a diverse assemblage of up to 20 different sulfates are found (e.g. natrojarosite, sideronatrite, metasideronatrite, tamarugite, magnesiocopiapite, bílinite, starkeyite, blödite, rozenite and siderotil). These sulfates are accompanied by halite, sulfur, goethite and a number of phases of uncertain identity, such as sulfates containing Sr and REE. This is an example of mineral paragenesis formed by weathering in a saline evaporite environment, which is extremely rare in Europe but is found in arid regions elsewhere (e.g. in the Atacama Desert in Chile).

The structure of julgoldite, , has been determined and refined to an R value of 4·6 % based on 2417 symmetry-independent reflections, of which 765 are unobserved (weighted R = 4·3 %). The cell dimensions are a 8·922(4), b 6·081(3), c 19·432(9) Å, β 97·60(6)°, the space group is A2/m with Z = 4 and Dcalc 3·56 g cm-3. Julgoldite is isostructural with pumpellyite; the Si-O and Ca-O distances of julgoldite are identical, within experimental accuracy, with corresponding distances in pumpellyite; the Fe-O distances of julgoldite are about 0·09 Å longer than the corresponding (Al, Mg)-O distances in pumpellyite. The four hydroxyl groups and the extent of O-for-OH substitution are identified by valence-sum calculations.

The compositions of the groundmass and of the plagioclase and sanidine phenocrysts of a series of over- and under-saturated trachytes indicate that plagioclase will precipitate at some stage in the crystallization interval of all calcium-bearing potassic trachytes. Using this data obtained from natural salic liquids, a concept of crystallization within the system CaA2Si2O8-NaAlSiO4-KAlSiO4-SiO2 may be obtained.

The Cerro Prieto geothermal system provides a unique opportunity for the detailed study of calc-silicate mineral transitions between the diagenetic clay-carbonate and greenschist facies within the terrigenous sediments of the Colorado River delta. In this system, progressive devolatization reactions within carbonate-cemented, quartzofeldspathic sediment have produced a distinct hydrothermal mineral zonation at temperatures between 200–370°C and fluid pressures below 0.3 kbar. Descriptive and compositional data are presented for these minerals which include wairakite, epidote, prehnite, actinolite, clinopyroxene, garnet, sphene, biotite, microcline, and calcite. Partitioning of octahedral Fe, Mg, and Al between coexisting authigenic silicates is comparable with data from higher temperature metamorphic rocks and demonstrates an approach to local equilibrium within this system. Calculated fugacities of oxygen at temperatures above 300°C are (with rare exception) more reducing than that defined by the quartz-fayalite-magnetite buffer, a result consistent with the scarcity of hematite and grandite and the ubiquitous presence of organic material in Cerro Prieto sandstones.

Humite group minerals occur in the marbles of granulite grade at Ambasamudram, southern India. Detailed mineralogical and mineral chemical characterization indicate the mineral is a flourine-rich titanian-poor variety of clinohumite. Average MTi/Si values of 2.22 with typical XRD pattern indicate the mineral to be clinohumite. Petrological constraints on the clinohumite formation shows a high temperature (>700°C) and low aco2 during its formation. The fluorine content of these clinohumites is the highest reported in any environment, with F/(F+OH) ratio reaching a value of 0.70. The high fluorine content reflect the high P-T condition of formation. The OH content of the clinohumites is around 0.59 mole fraction. Preliminary FTIR spectra of the clinohumites show eight sharp absorption peaks between wave numbers 3700 and 3400 cm−1 and a broad absorption band with a peak at 3840 cm−1. The sharp peaks are due to OH in the clinohumite. The high fluorine content of the Ambasamudram clinohumites possibly resulted from the isochemical reactions involving (OH-F) silicates such as amphiboles or phlogopites. The internal fluid buffering is also supported by the stable isotope as well as the petrological studies of the marble assemblages.

The amygdaloidal carbonatite lavas at Qasiarsuk have a primary phenocryst assemblage of calcite, fluor-apatite and magnetite set in a groundmass of calcite, apatite and iron oxides, and minor dolomite. Cathodoluminescence reveals a complex history, both for the major minerals which show zonal growth, and for important Nb and REE accessory phases which include pyrochlore and perovskite. The REE reside in fluor/hydrous-carbonates included exclusively in apatite. These REE minerals are similar to synthetic phases from hydrothermal experiments, but probably crystallised in equilibrium with a late-stage volatile-rich carbonate melt. Apart from low-temperature alteration, the rocks have been little disturbed since their extrusion during the earliest phase of development of the Gardar Alkaline Igneous Province.

Edwardsite, Cu3Cd2(SO4)2(OH)6·4H2O, is a new mineral from the Block 14 Opencut, Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. It occurs as druses of tabular and bladed crystals up to 0.06 mm in size, associated with niedermayrite and christelite. Edwardsite is pale blue, transparent with vitreous lustre and has excellent cleavage parallel to {100}. Density was not measured but the calculated density, from the empirical formula, is 3.53 g cm–3 and the Mohs hardness is ∼3. Optically, it is biaxial negative with α ∼ 1.74, β = 1.762(4), γ ∼ 1.77 and 2Vcalc. ∼ +62°. The optical orientation is X = b, Y ∼ a, Z ∼ c. Electron microprobe analysis gave (wt.%): CdO 32.43, CuO 28.06, ZnO 2.26, FeO 0.08, SO3 20.35, H2Ocalc. (from crystal-structure analysis) 14.14, totalling 99.32. The empirical formula, calculated on the basis of 18 oxygen atoms is Cu2.77Cd1.98Zn0.22Fe0.01(SO4)2.00(OH)5.95·4.06H2O. Edwardsite is monoclinic, space group P21/c, with a = 10.863(2) Å, b = 13.129(3) Å, c = 11.169(2) Å, β = 113.04(3)°, V = 1465.9(5) Å3 (single-crystal data) and Z = 4. The eight strongest lines in the powder diffraction pattern are [d (Å), (I/I0), (hkl)]: 9.991, (90), (100); 5.001, (90), (200, 21); 4.591, (45), (20); 3.332, (60), (300, 032); 3.005, (30), (03); 2.824, (40), (2); 2.769, (55), (20, 042, 10); 2.670, (45), (2). The crystal structure was determined by direct methods and refined to R1 = 3.21% using 1904 observed reflections with Fo > 4σ(Fo) collected using synchrotron X-ray radiation (λ = 0.773418 Å). The structure is based on infinite sheets of edge-sharing Cuϕ6 (ϕ: O2–, OH) octahedra and Cdϕ7 (ϕ: O2–, H2O) polyhedra parallel to (100). The sheets are decorated on both sides by corner-sharing (SO4) tetrahedra, which also corner-link to isolated Cdϕ6 octahedra, thus connecting adjacent sheets. Moderate-strong to weak hydrogen bonding provides additional linkage between sheets.

Three-dimensional counter-diffractometer data and a full-matrix least-squares method have been used to refine the crystal structure of a sub-silicic hastingsite in the space group C2/m. The chemical composition of the amphibole is with ceil parameters a = 9·8659(4), b = 18·0139(8), c = 5·3545(2)Å, and β = 105·082(1)°. Unit weights were used throughout the refinement and the final R-factor for 1263 observed non-equivalent reflections was 4.1%. The mean tetrahcdral bond length for aluminous amphiboles varies linearly with the total amount of tetrahedral A1. Curves are derived relating individual mean bond lengths with A1 occupancy. The positional disorder on the A-site of the aluminous amphiboles appears to be partly related to the amount of substitution of A1 into the T(2) tetrahedron.

Chevkinite/perrierite crystallized from a series of REE-enriched compositions, ranging from basalt through andesite to rhyolite at pressures from 7.5 to 20 kbar and temperatures from 900–1050°C. The Al2O3 content increased with increasing pressure, but no other consistent composition change was observed with pressure and temperature variation in this range. The REE partition pattern consistently favoured light over heavy REE, with a regular decrease in partition coefficients (D) from La through to Lu. D values increase with decreasing temperature and decreasing REE content (i.e. Henry's Law does not apply, as REE are essential structural constituents of chevkinite/perrierite), but appear unaffected by pressure and fo2. Chevkinite/perrierite may be a significant fractionating phase in evolving silicic magmas, or a residual phase from low degrees of partial melting of granulites. In both these circumstances it will exert a major control on the REE content of derivative liquids.

Several silicate-minerals, such as ardennite – Mn2+4MgAl5[Si5(As5+,V5+)O22](OH)6, Z = 2, tiragalloite – Mn2+4[Si3As5+O12(OH)], Z = 4 and medaite – Mn2+6[Si5(V5+,As5+)O18(OH)], Z = 4 possess (V5+,As5+,P5+)O4 tetrahedra. Using electron-microprobe analysis (EMPA) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods, the crystal chemistry of ardennite from Salam-Château, Belgium and the Vernetto mine, Italy, tiragalloite from the Gambatesa mine, Italy, and medaite from the Molinello mine, Italy and the Fianel mine, Switzerland, were studied. Structure refinements converged to R1 values of 2.10–5.67%. According to chemical analysis, the Σ(As+V+P) content increases with decreasing Si content. Thus, Si replaces pentavalent cations in tetrahedral coordination. The (As5+,V5+,P5+,Si4+)O4 tetrahedra are categorized by their connections to SiO4 tetrahedra. The (As5+,V5+,P5+,Si4+)O4 tetrahedron of ardennite is isolated, and those of tiragalloite and medaite terminate a tetrahedral chain. The <T–O> of the isolated (As5+,V5+,P5+,Si4+)O4 tetrahedron shows a positive correlation with the mean ionic radius. For (As5+,V5+,P5+,Si4+)O4 tetrahedra with one T–O–T link, <T–O> and mean ionic radius are also correlated. In addition, the longest bridging T–O bond occurs between (As,V,P,Si)O4 and the adjacent SiO4 tetrahedron. The bridging O atom is over-bonded to satisfy the charge requirement of Σ(As+V+Si).

The collapse of minerals and mineral assemblies under external stress is modelled using a master curve where the stress failure is related to the relative, effective elastic moduli which are in turn related to the porosity of the sample. While a universal description is known not to be possible, we argue that for most porous materials such as shales, silica, cement phases, hydroxyapatite, zircon and also carbonates in corals and agglomerates we can estimate the critical porosity ϕc at which small stresses will lead to the collapse of the sample. For several samples we find ϕc ~0.5 with an almost linear decay of the bulk moduli with porosity at ϕc <0.5. The second scenario involves the persistence of elasticity for porosities until almost 1 whereby the bulk modulus decreases following a power law κ ~ (1–ϕm, m>2, between ϕ = 0.5 and ϕ = 1.

Radioactive particulate matter (identified as hot particles) is present in the effluent discharged by the British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL) uranium reprocessing plant at Sellafield, Cumbria, UK. There is very little information on the abundance or chemical and physical forms of solid matter in the effluent; even less is known of the significance of particulate debris in relation to the uptake of radionuclides for non-occupationally exposed people as a result of transfer along marine foodchains. Some observations on the occurrence and abundance of hot particles in the vicinity of Sellafield are reported, with special reference to those that contain transuranic radionuclides (Pu,Am,Cm). Some of the uncertainties are discussed in an evaluation of the significance of hot particles, albeit aggregates of colloids for the smallest particles, and exposure to man from ionizing radiation. There is no evidence that hot particles derived from BNFL and subsequently dispersed into the marine environment represent a hazard to man. However, further studies are required in order to determine whether or not the pathways followed by the particles are significant, or different to those of other radionuclides through which the radiation exposure of man within this region of Cumbria is assessed.

Screes on high serpentinite sea cliffs in Shetland have been internally cemented by deposits of brucite, hydromagnesite and aragonite since the last glaciation. These minerals have been deposited from solutions originating as rain (often contaminated with salt spray), which fell on the serpentinite screes and dissolved Mg and minor amounts of Ca from the more finely divided and powdery scree components. As the solutions filtered down through the screes they deposited cements in the form of spherulitic layers of brucite and hydromagnesite with minor amounts of aragonite. At sea level the Mg-rich solutions mingled with sea water impregnating the scree and there cementation within the scree took place by the crystallization of plush-type layers of aragonite on the serpentinite fragments.

The new mineral belakovskiite (IMA2013-075), Na7(UO2)(SO4)4(SO3OH)(H2O)3, was found in the Blue Lizard mine, Red Canyon, White Canyon district, San Juan County, Utah, USA, where it occurs as a secondary alteration phase in association with blödite, ferrinatrite, kröhnkite, meisserite and metavoltine. Crystals of belakovskiite are very pale yellowish-green hair-like fibres up to 2 mm long and usually no more than a few mm in diameter. The fibres are elongated on [100] and slightly flattened on {021}. Crystals are transparent with a vitreous lustre. The mineral has a white streak and a probable Mohs hardness of ∼2. Fibres are flexible and elastic, with brittle failure and irregular fracture. No cleavage was observed. The mineral is readily soluble in cold H2O. The calculated density is 2.953 g cm−3. Optically, belakovskiite is biaxial (+) with α = 1.500(1), β = 1.511(1) and γ = 1.523(1) (measured in white light). The measured 2V is 87.1(6)° and the calculated 2V is 88°. The mineral is non-pleochroic. The partially determined optical orientation is X ≈ a. Electron-microprobe analysis provided Na2O 21.67, UO3 30.48, SO3 40.86, H2O 6.45 (structure), total 99.46 wt.% yielding the empirical formula Na6.83(U1.04O2)(SO4)4(S0.99O3OH)(H2O)3 based on 25 O a.p.f.u. Belakovskiite is triclinic, P, with a = 5.4581(3), b = 11.3288(6), c = 18.4163(13) Å, α = 104.786(7)°, β = 90.092(6)°, γ = 96.767(7)°, V = 1092.76(11) Å3 and Z = 2. The eight strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines are [dobs Å(I)(hkl)]: 8.96(35)(002), 8.46(29)(011), 5.19(100)(01,101,10), 4.66(58)(013,02,0,110), 3.568(37)(120,023,005,03), 3.057(59)(06,15,31), 2.930(27)(multiple) and 1.8320(29)(multiple). The structure, refined to R1 = 5.39% for 3163 Fo > 4σF reflections, contains [(UO2)(SO4)4(H2O)]6− polyhedral clusters connected via an extensive network of Na−O bonds and H bonds involving eight Na sites, three other H2O sites and an SO3OH (hydrosulfate) group. The 3-D framework, thus defined, is unique among known uranyl sulfate structures. The mineral is named for Dmitry Ilych Belakovskiy, a prominent Russian mineralogist and Curator of the Fersman Mineralogical Museum.

Banded gneisses and migmatites in the Champira Dome contain assemblages of the biotite-cordierite-almandine subfacies of the granulite facies. The banded gneisses represent a sequence of arkosic sediments metamorphosed to sillimanite-cordierite gneisses. The migmatites were derived from more argillaceous and potassic sediments, with lower oxidation ratios and lower Ba/Rb ratios. They consist of a quartzo-feldspathic leucosome, representing anatectic melt, with schlieren of the refractory minerals sillimanite, garnet, biotite, and oxide minerals. Cordierite developed from garnet and biotite, except in rocks of high FeO/(FeO + MgO) ratio. Both rock types contain assemblages of magnetite + hercynite + corundum + ilmenite + hematite, formed by unmixing of high-temperature solid solutions. Rb-Sr studies of the banded gneisses gave an age of 2327 ± 25 Ma, which is interpreted as the date of metamorphism, and an initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.7064 ± 0.0003. The migmatite samples plot close to this 2327 Ma regression line, but the strontium isotopes were considerably disturbed, though not homogenized on the scale of sampling, 962 ± 34 Ma ago. It is considered that the anatexis in the migmatites was contemporaneous with the metamorphism of the banded gneisses and that the 962 ± 34 Ma event may be correlated with recrystallization of the migmatites accompanying the growth of cordierite.

Some of the illustrative concepts for the disposal of intermediate-level waste in a geological disposal facility in the UK employ a cementitious backfill around the waste packages. The concept for higher strength rocks would use a highly alkaline backfill composed of Portland cement (now known as CEM I), hydrated lime and limestone flour, referred to as Nirex reference vault backfill (NRVB).

This paper reports a study of the extensive leaching of cured NRVB in a range of generic leachant compositions (deionized water, 0.1 M and 1 M NaCl solutions) under flow-through conditions using a flexible wall permeameter. The experiments were designed to run for up to two years and to pass at least 1000 volumes of leachant (defined as the cumulative leachate volume produced/NRVB solid specimen volume) through the NRVB samples. Results for the pH evolution profiles of the leachates and the microstructural analysis of the unleached and leached samples are presented.
