Davidlloydite, ideally Zn3(AsO4)2(H2O)4, is a new supergene mineral from the Tsumeb mine, Otjikoto (Oshikoto) region, Namibia. It occurs as elongated prisms (∼10:1 length-to-width ratio) that are flattened on {010}, and up to 100 × 20 × 10 μm in size. The crystals occur as aggregates (up to 500 μm across) of subparallel to slightly diverging prisms lying partly on and partly embedded in fine-grained calcioandyrobertsite. Crystals are prismatic along [001] and flattened on {010}, and show the forms {010} dominant and {100} subsidiary. Davidlloydite is colourless with a white streak and a vitreous lustre; it does not fluoresce under ultraviolet light. The cleavage is distinct on {010}, and no parting or twinning was observed. The Mohs hardness is 3 – 4. Davidlloydite is brittle with an irregular to hackly fracture. The calculated density is 3.661 g cm–3. Optical properties were measured with a Bloss spindle stage for the wavelength 590 nm using a gel filter. The indices of refraction are α = 1.671, β = 1.687, γ = 1.695, all ±0.002; the calculated birefringence is 0.024; 2Vobs = 65.4(6)°, 2Vcalc = 70°; the dispersion is r < v, weak; pleochroism was not observed. Davidlloydite is triclinic, space group P1, with a = 5.9756(4), b = 7.6002(5), c = 5.4471(4) Å, α = 84.2892(9), β = 90.4920(9), γ = 87.9958(9)°, V = 245.99(5) Å3, Z = 1 and a:b:c = 0.7861:1:0.7167. The seven strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [listed as d (Å), I, (hkl)] are as follows: 4.620, 100, (011, 10); 7.526, 71, (010); 2.974, 49, (200, 01); 3.253, 40, (021, 120); 2.701, 39, (10, 002, 1); 5.409, 37, (001); 2.810, 37, (210). Chemical analysis by electron microprobe gave As2O5 43.03, ZnO 37.95, CuO 5.65, H2O(calc) 13.27, sum 99.90 wt.%. The H2O content and the valence state of As were determined by crystal structure analysis. On the basis of 12 anions with H2O = 4 a.p.f.u., the empirical formula is (Zn2.53Cu0.39)Σ2.92As2.03O8(H2O)4.

The crystal structure of davidlloydite was solved by direct methods and refined to an R1 index of 1.51% based on 1422 unique observed reflections collected on a three-circle rotating-anode (MoKα radiation) diffractometer equipped with multilayer optics and an APEX-II detector. In the structure of davidlloydite, sheets of corner-sharing (As5+O4) and (ZnO4) tetrahedra are linked by ZnO2(H2O)4 octahedra. The structure is related to that of parahopeite.

Accessory tourmaline in metasediments from the Sinai crystalline basement exhibits textural and chemical signatures that relate to the evolution of regional metamorphism and deformation during the Pan-African orogeny and testifies to different P-T path segments. Tourmaline inclusions in various porphyroblasts were formed during the prograde phase of metamorphism; acicular to prismatic crystals in the matrix, oriented sub-parallel to, and enveloped by, the main foliation crystallized syntectonically under prograde and peak metamorphic conditions; tourmaline cross-cutting the main foliation may have formed just after the peak or during the retrograde phase of metamorphism. Some of the cores in tourmaline crystals, showing different colours, are interpreted as former detrital grains. The abundance of tourmaline decreases with increasing peak metamorphic conditions. The tourmaline investigated belongs to the schorl-dravitess group, generally with XMg of 0.42–0.73 and XCa = Ca/(Ca+Na+K+□) of 0.02–0.24, typical of tourmalines in metapelites and metapsammites; whereas detrital cores have been derived from various sources, including former tourmaline-quartz and pre-existing high-metamorphic rocks. Tourmaline of the Sinai metasediments was formed during metamorphism of the sedimentary precursors, essentially in a closed system, where clay minerals and organic matter, together with detrital tourmaline, served as the source of boron. Although a metamorphic facies should be defined by characteristic mineral assemblages present in metamorphic rocks, tourmaline chemistry is a good monitor of P-T conditions in the metapelites and semi-metapelites investigated, showing an increase in XMg with increasing metamorphic grade, where XturMg = 0.60 distinguishes between greenschist and lower-amphibolite facies, while XturMg = 0.65 could distinguish lower- from middle- to upper-amphibolite facies. The results of tourmaline-biotite geothermometry compare well with our former temperature estimates using conventional geothermometry and phase-diagram modelling.

Natural and synthetic scheelite are investigated by time-resolved laser-induced luminescence to detect and ascribe various luminescence lines to a variety of REE. The selectivity of detection is possible by using different time delays after excitation, different gate widths and different excitation wavenumbers and allowed to detect REE in samples where they are hidden by intrinsic luminescence and not visible in the steady-state spectra as well as by cathodoluminescenee. Luminescence of Pr3+, Er3+ and Tm3+ are detected even with low concentrations and in the presence of Tb3+, Dy3+ and Sm3+. Luminescence of Ho3+ and Yb3+ is firstly detected in natural scheelites and luminescence of Eu2+ and Ce3+ is preliminary suggested.

Pollucite is a silicate mineral of the rare element caesium, occurring in granitic pegmatites. Experiments have been carried out at 450, 600, and 750°C, 1.5 kbar, to study the equilibrium between pollucite, albite and the co-existing hydrothermal solution. When pollucite co-exists with albite, the alkaline composition of the solution is buffered. The Cs/Na ratio of the solution has been determined to be 0.11 at 450°C 0.22 at 600°C and 0.23 at 750°C. Pollucite contains about 15 mol.% of sodium, whereas albite is almost purely sodic. In nature, pollucite with more than 82 mol.% caesium has never been found. This can be explained by the absence of solutions in granitic pegmatites having a higher Cs/Na ratio than those determined by us.

Introduction—pyro-electricity has been investigated by various methods. Sir David Brewster heated his crystals and brought them into contact with small, very light, insulating particles: If these adhered, the presence of pyro-electricity in the crystal was inferred. He also used a very delicately suspended brass needle. Being a conductor it was attracted to a charged crystal when this was brought near to it. Hankel placed the crystal under investigation in a small bath of copper or iron filings, which was then put into a hotair oven. The filings did not entirely cover the whole crystal, but one corner, edge, or face, whichever was required, was left exposed. A very small platinum sphere connected to an electrometer was then brought near to the exposed portion. The charge induced on the sphere was taken as a measure of the charge developed at the particular spot on the crystal opposite the platinum sphere.

Shannonite, ideally Pb2OCO3, is a new mineral species that occurs as mm-sized white porcellanous crusts, associated with fluorite, at the Grand Reef mine, Graham County, Arizona, USA. Other associated minerals are plumbojarosite, hematite, Mn-oxides, muscovite-2M1, quartz, litharge, massicot, hydrocerussite, minium, and unnamed PbCO3·2PbO. Shannonite is orthorhombic, space group P21221 or P212121, with unit-cell parameters (refined from X-ray powder data): a 9.294(3), b 9.000(3), c 5.133(2) Å, V 429.3(3) Å3, a:b:c 1.0327:1:0.5703, Z = 4. The strongest five lines in the X-ray powder pattern [d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 4.02(40)(111); 3.215(100)(211); 3.181(90)(121); 2.858(40)(130); 2.564(35)(002). The average of eight electron microprobe analyses is PbO 89.9(5), CO2 (by CHN elemental analyser) 9.70, total 99.60 wt.%. With O = 4, the empirical formula is Pb1.91C1.05O4.00. The calculated density for the empirical formula is 7.31 and for the idealized formula is 7.59 g/cm3. In reflected light, shannonite is colourless-grey to white, with ubiquitous white internal reflections (× 16 objectives), weak anisotropy, barely detectable bireflectance, and no evidence of pleochroism. The calculated refractive index (at 590 nm) is 2.09. Measured reflectance values in air and in oil (× 4 objectives) are tabulated. Transmission electron-microscopy studies reveal that individual crystallites range in size from 10–400 nm, are platy, and are anhedral. Physical properties for cryptocrystalline crusts include: white streak; waxy lustre; opaque; nonfluorescent under both long- and short-wave ultraviolet light; uneven fracture; brittle; VHN100 97 (range 93–100); calculated Mohs’ hardness 3–3½. Shannonite is soluble in concentrated HCl and in dilute HNO3 and H2SO4. The mineral name is for David M. Shannon, who helped collect the samples and who initiated this study.

Chernikovite, (H3O)2(UO2)2(PO4)2, was synthesized and subsequently transformed into metauranocircite II, Ba(UO2)2(PO4)2.6H2O, by ion-exchange experiments. The crystals are lemon-yellow and strongly fluorescent. From solubility data a mean pKs value at 25°C was determined as 51.79 ± 0.21. For a cell volume of 16.31.7 Å3 and Z = 4 the density was calculated as 3.970 g/cm3 whereas the measured density is 3.964 g/cm 3. The X-ray powder pattern shows the following strongest lines: 3.609(60)(114), 3.470(60)(123), 2.9272(90)(132)2.9006(90)(312), 2.6065(80)(116), 2.4581(75)(233), 2.2015(100)(143 ; 143), 2.1869(100) (241 ; 226 ;241).

We present here new data on the low-sulfide mineralisation in the upper endocontact of the Noril'sk 1 intrusion. Twenty four mineral species of platinum-group elements and their solid solutions, as well as numerous unnamed phases, including an Sb analogue of vincentite, As and Sn analogues of mertieite-I and a Sn analogue of mertieite-II have been found. It is shown that the features of the mineral association: (1) the atypical trend of TiO2 and Fe2+ in chromian spinel; (2) the composition of the Pt–Fe alloys with a Fe/Fe + Pt range of 0.26–0.37 (logfO2 ≈ – (9–10); and (3) crystallisation of high-temperature sperrylite from silicate melt (at >800°C and logfS2 < –10.5), which is possible under fO2 of FMQ to FMQ-2 in mafic magma, are due to the reducing conditions of their formation and evolution. Droplet-like inclusions of silicate-oxide minerals in сhromian spinels and sulfides in platinum-group minerals are interpreted to be trapped droplets of co-existing sulfide melt. The captured sulfide melt has evolved in the direction of increasing the fugacity of sulfur: troilite + pentlandite (Fe>Ni) – in sperrylite (paragenesis I) to monoclinic pyrrhotite + pentlandite (Ni≈Fe) + chalcopyrite – in Pt–Fe alloys (paragenesis II). Paragenesis from the sulfide aggregates in the silicate matrix are more fractionated: pyrrhotite + pyrrhotite (Ni>Fe) + chalcopyrite (III) and pyrite + pentlandite (Ni>>Fe) + millerite (IV). Pd arsenides and antimonides crystallised later than sperrylite and isoferroplatinum, as a result of the evolution of a sulfide melt with an increased activity of the element ligands (Te, Sn, Sb and As).

An ultramafic lamprophyre dyke is described from the otherwise tholeiitic Ferrar magmatic province of Antarctica. We report an Ar-Ar age of 183 ± 2.2 Ma for the dyke, indistinguishable from those of the Ferrar tholeiites. However, the dyke has mineralogical and major and trace element compositions, and radiogenic isotopes ratios, very different from the Ferrar tholeiites. The sample consists of olivine and rare clinopyroxene phenocrysts with perovskite and spinel microphenocrysts in a groundmass of amphibole, nepheline and biotite. Carbonatitic globules contain calcite, dolomite, Fe-rich carbonate, nepheline, biotite, orthoclase, pyrite, clinopyroxene, apatite and silicate glass, and were formed by liquid immiscibility. The rock is mildly potassic and classifies as an ouachitite. It is strongly enriched in both moderately and highly incompatible trace elements and is the first high-Ti rock to be described from the Ferrar magmatic province. The rock has similar initial 143Nd/144Nd to OIB, notably Bouvet, Crozet and Réunion, but significantly higher initial 87Sr/86Sr. The lamprophyre magma is interpreted as having been generated by low-degree partial fusion of metasomatized lithospheric mantle as a result of heat conducted from an underlying Jurassic mantle plume. The same mantle plume was probably also responsible for generating one of the world’s largest layered gabbro bodies, the Dufek-Forrestal intrusions.

“Image analysis” refers to the general family of computational techniques which are concerned with the extracting of quantitative information from images captured in digital form. Such techniques have been in use for several years in areas such as biology and metallurgy, but have been slow to find wide use in the microscopic areas of Earth Sciences. Notable exceptions have included applications in the areas of mineral processing and sedimentary petrography.

The impetus for the meeting held jointly by the Applied Mineralogy Group of the Mineralogical Society and the Geological Information Group of the Geological Society of London in September 1993, was an attempt to take stock of the spread of digital image analysis techniques into the domain of the mineralogist and petrologist.

During a study of the petrography and mineral constituents separated from various shales overlying the coal-measures of South Wales, Dr. Alfred Brammall noticed on several hand-specimens from Llandebie a white infilling to fissures or a coating on slickensided surfaces which could be readily detached from the matrix. Chemical examination showed that this coating, unlike the shales themselves, contained more sodium than potassium. The present note gives an account of subsequent chemical, X-ray, and optical work, which confirms Dr. Brammall's suggestion that the white incrustation contains a new sodium-rich mineral allied to mica. It is not, I hope, an unfitting tribute to his work in this field as well as to his interest in recent advances in mineralogy that I have named this mineral brammallite. A short account of its nature and relationship to illite, which is the chief constituent of the shale itself (see preceding paper, p. 297), will now be given.

The formation of crystalline rare earth element (REE) (e.g. La, Ce, Pr, Nd) carbonates from aqueous solutions was examined at ambient temperature using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, combined with X-ray diffraction, high-resolution microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. In all experiments REE-lanthanites (REE2(CO3)3·8H2O) formed via a highly hydrated, nanoparticulate and poorlyordered REE-carbonate precursor. The lifetime of this precursor as well as the kinetics of crystallization of the various REE-lanthanites were dependent on the specific REE3+ ion involved in the reaction. The induction time and the time needed to fully form the crystalline REE-lanthanite end products increase linearly with the ionic potential. The authors show here that the differences in ion size and ionic potential as well as differences in dehydration energy of the REE3+ ions control the lifetime of the poorly ordered precursor and thus also the crystallization kinetics of the REE-lanthanites; furthermore, they also affect the structural characteristics (e.g. unit-cell dimensions and idiomorphism) of the final crystalline lanthanites.

In the Calatrava province of central Spain, numerous Quaternary pyroclastic vents have erupted carbonatite magmas carrying silicate melt fragments, mantle debris and megacrysts. Lava flows are rare. Maar and scoria deposits have carbonate matrices and pass into tuff sheets with carbonate contents >50%, which are spread widely away from the eruptive centres and constitute the most abundant form of effusive carbonate. Immense quantities of mantle debris are present in the erupted material. The tuffs have a distinctive fabric, which consists of a pale matrix carrying black silicate glass clasts that contain globules of immiscible carbonate and carbonate phenocrysts. There is evidence of similar volcanism in the Limagne province of central France and in other intra-continental provinces in Europe and Africa. About 500 vents have been identified in France and Spain: all the vents examined to date have erupted carbonatite magma. Such eruptions are not generally recognized in classical volcanology. As pyroclastic carbonatite was not previously recognized in Spain and France, a detailed examination of other mafic and ultramafic alkaline provinces, where research has traditionally concentrated on lava flows, is vital. For any search to be successful, evidence from the pyroclastic rocks will be required.

We present the results of an inelastic neutron scattering study of a crystalline polymorph of SiO2 (α-quartz), and a number of silicate glasses (pure silica, SiO2, and three glasses in the alkali series (K,Li)2Si2O5). We demonstrate the presence of the Boson peak in the inelastic spectra of the crystalline and amorphous materials and argue that it arises simply from the dispersion characteristics of transverse acoustic modes. Furthermore, we investigate the role of the lower-energy floppy modes in the inelastic spectra, and show that they are controlled by chemical effects.

The review focuses on the evolution of five contiguous peralkaline salic complexes in the south-central Kenya Rift Valley, stressing new developments of general significance to peralkaline magmatism. The complexes have evolved dominantly by combinations of fractional crystallization and magma mixing; volatile-melt interactions, remobilization of plutonic rocks and crystal mushes, and carbonate-silicate liquid immiscibility have been additional petrogenetic processes. Geochemical and experimental studies have shown that pantelleritic magmas can be generated by fractional crystallization of trachyte and high-silica rhyolite. Melts of comenditic composition were also formed by fractionation of trachyte but also locally by partial meltingof syenites. Studies of apparent partition coefficients have provided some of the first data on element distribution between phenocrysts and peralkaline silicic melts. Compositional zonation has been ubiquitous in the complexes, probably a result of the very low viscosity of the magmas.

The gabbro-anorthosite complex of SW Angola and Namibia (Kunene Complex) is dominated by anorthosite-troctolite cumulates. Other broadly gabbroic rock types are subordinate. An-rich plagioclase (max. An85) and Fo-rich olivine (max. Fo79) are common in the western area of the complex with plagioclase becoming gradually less anorthitic (min. An45) and olivine less forsteritic (min. Fo62) toward the east. This cryptic change is more pronounced in the northern half of the complex where rocks are darker, fresh, and the rhythmic layering is also more conspicuous. Within the white 'massive' anorthosite type, which is largely restricted to the southern half of the intrusion, cryptic layering is less pronounced. Textures indicate that rocks cooled very slowly and the co-existing mineral compositions indicate re-equilibration to usually low temperatures.

Melt compositions in equilibrium with peridotite assemblages were determined in the analogue system Na2O–CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–CO2 at 3 GPa with Ca/Ca + Mg = 0.56–0.43 and up to 6 wt.% Na2O. There is a greater compositional range generated isobarically over a larger temperature interval than in a sodium-absent system: increasing sodium content drives liquids to compositions with lower CaO and higher SiO2 concentrations. A positive correlation between silica and Na2O content of liquids produced at constant temperature is due to the depolymerization of silicate tetrahedra in the presence of monovalent cations, as in the volatile-free system. Liquids with Na2O >6 wt.% occur in association with wehrlites as the composition of diopsidic pyroxene expands towards enstatite with addition of Na2O, decreasing the orthopyroxene content of peridotite. The orthopyroxene-out curve intersects an enriched mantle solidus at 3 GPa where near-solidus liquids have Na2O = 7 1.5 wt.%. Sodium partitioning between a metaluminous liquid and clinopyroxene follows the jadeite partitioning models calculated for the dry silicate system but sodium partitions into peralkaline carbonated liquids as both the pyroxene and the carbonate molecules. The peralkaline liquids generated are essentially carbonated silicate melts that are analogous to silica-bearing carbonatites and silicocarbonatites from a range of possible metasomatized mantle sources.

Eleven nepheline-kalsilite crystalline solutions with various proportions of K:Na have been studied from room temperature to 1050/11500C by X-ray powder diffraction. Nepheline expansion is relatively high and little affected by composition, whereas kalsilite expansion is lower but affected to a significant degree by K:Na ratio. The generally higher rate of expansion in nepheline is apparently related to the collapse of the tetrahedral framework around the smaller of its two alkali sites. Occupancy of these sites by the relatively small Na ion fürther extends the potential for thermal vibration before the structure is stretched to the critical degree required for phase transformation. Once the structure changes to that of kalsilite, with its single alkali site, an increase in content of the larger K ion limits the degree to which kalsilite can expand. Crucial to the overall expansion behaviour of these minerals are the specific tetrahedral configurations of nepheline vs. kalsilite, the number and geometry of their alkali sites, the occupancies of those sites, and the flexibility inherent in each structure that allows for adjustment with increasing temperature.

Recent studies on albitite rocks located in the granodiorite complex of Central Sardinia have revealed that epidote has a widespread occurrence as a light rare-earth element (LREE)-bearing accessory common phase. Titanite has been recorded as a heavy rare earth element (HREE)-bearing mineral. The Hercynian granodiorite complex of Central Sardinia is composed chiefly of quartz, Ca-plagioclase, K-feldspar and biotite and of a wide variety of secondary assemblages, mainly allanite, titanite and zircon. Albitic plagioclase and quartz are the main mineral components of the albitites. Additional minerals include, besides allanite and epidote, a more calcic-plagioclase (oligoclase), K-feldspar, chlorite, titanite and more rarely muscovite. The mineral assemblages and REE-bearing minerals of albitites were analysed by wavelength dispersive spectrometry (WDS). Chemical data suggest that there is a near complete solid-solution between epidote and allanite whereas little variations in HREE of titanites were detected. In epidote-group minerals a pronounced zoning in REE was observed while titanite was recorded unzoned. Textural relations were studied by SEM to distinguish primary from secondary epidotes. Chemical criteria to recognize magmatic from alteration epidotes were also applied. The alteration epidotes mainly occur and generally originate from plagioclase alteration and from leaching of magmatic allanite. Comparison of textures using both the SEM technique and EPMA data showed that the characteristic ‘patchy zoning’, observed in epidotes, corresponds with different amounts of REE in these minerals.

The schematic model proposed for the epidote-forming reactions during the metasomatic processes that affected the granodiorites involves: (i) the instability of the anorthitic component of plagioclase; (ii) the simultaneous formation of albite; (iii) the leaching of the magmatic allanite with a redistribution of REE in the epidotes of the albitites.
