For a class of primes p ≡ 1 (mod 20) for which 2 is a quintic nonresidue, unambiguous evaluations of parameters of bidecic Jacobi and Jacobsthal sums (mod p) are presented, in terms of the partition p = a2+5b2+5c2+5d2, ab = d2–c2–cd. Similar results for sums of others orders have been obtained by E. Lehmer and by K. S. Williams.

Let M be an n-dimensional (n = 2m + 1, m ≦ 1) real differentiable manifold. if on M there exist a tensor field , a contravariant vector field ξi and a convariant vector field ηi such that then M is said to have an almost contact structure with the structure tensors (φ,ξ, η) [1], [2]. Further, if a positive definite Riemannian metric g satisfies the conditions then g is called an associated Riemannian metric to the almost contact structure and M is then said to have an almost contact metric structure. On the other hand, M is said to have a contact structure [2], [4] if there exists a 1-form η over M such that η ∧ (dη)m ≠ 0 everywhere over M where dη means the exterior derivation of η and the symbol ∧ means the exterior multiplication. In this case M is said to be a contact manifold with contact form η. It is known [2, Th. 3,1] that if η = ηidxi is a 1-form defining a contact structure, then there exists a positive definite Riemannian metric in gij such that and define an almost contact metric structure with and ηi where the symbol ∂i standing for ∂/∂xi.

A weak but still unsolved version of the first half of Problem 7 in Hanna Neumann's book [5] asks whether the product of a nontrivial join-irreducible variety and an arbitrary variety is necessarily also join-irreducible. One of the results of this paper is a positive answer provided either is abelian or the infiniterank free groups of have no nontrivial abelian verbal subgroups. For a general discussion, see [4]; all unexplained notation is as in [5].

Let A be a class of rings, and let L(A) denote the lower radical class determined by A. In [3] Yu-Lee Lee showed that L(A) may b constructed in the following manner: Let H(A) be the class of all homomorphic images of rings in A.

In this paper we consider the groups G = G(α, n) defined by the presentations . We derive a formula for [G′: ″] and determine the order of G whenever n ≦ 7. We show that G is a finite soluble group if n is odd, but that G can be infinite when n is even, n ≧ 8. We also show that G(6, 10) is a finite insoluble group involving PSU(3, 4), and that the group H with presentation is a finite group of deficiency zero of order at least 114,967,210,176,000.

Let E, F be sequence spaces and A an infinite matrix that maps E to F. Sufficient conditions are given so that the transposed matrix maps Fβ to Eβ.

(Point, closed subset)-separation axioms and closed subsets separation axioms for topological spaces will be uniformly defined. Then it is shown that a subcategory of TOP is bireflective in TOP if and only if Ob consists of all separated spaces for some (point, closed subset)-separation axiom. A characterization theorem on subcategories of all separated spaces for closed subsets separation axioms is also given by using the category SEP of all separation spaces and the embedding functor G: TOP → SEP. As an application we have that a T1-space is normal if and only if it is embedded in a product space of the unit intervals in SEP.

In this paper, we consider a class of strong symmetric distributions, which we refer to as the strong c-symmetric distributions. We provide, as the main result of this paper, conditions satisfied by the recurrence relations of certain polynomials associated with these distributions.

We count the number of lifts of an irreducible π-partial character that lies in a block with a cyclic defect group.

Biles has called a subring A of the ring C(X) a Wallman ring on X whenever Z(A), the zero sets of function belonging to A, forms a normal base on X in the sense of Frink (1964). In the following, we are concerned with the uniform topology of C(X). We formulate and prove some generalizations of the Stone–Weierstrass theorem in this setting.

We study the symplectic leaves of the subvariety of fixed points of an automorphism of a Calogero–Moser space induced by an element of finite order of the normalizer of the associated complex reflection group. We give a parametrization à la Harish-Chandra of its symplectic leaves (generalizing earlier works of Bellamy and Losev). This result is inspired by the mysterious relations between the geometry of Calogero–Moser spaces and unipotent representations of finite reductive groups, which is the theme of another paper, C. Bonnafé [‘Calogero–Moser spaces vs unipotent representations’, Pure Appl. Math. Q., to appear, Preprint, 2021, arXiv:2112.13684].

A Borel measure μ on a compact group G is called Lp-improving if the operator Tμ: L2(G) → L2(G), defined by Tμ(f) = μ * f, maps into Lp(G) for some P > 2. We characterize Lp-improving measures on compact non-abelian groups by the eigenspaces of the operator Tμ if |Tμ|. This result is a generalization of our recent characterization of Lp-improving measures on compact abelian groups.

Two examples of Riesz product-like measures are constructed. In contrast with the abelian case one of these is not Lp-improving, while the other is a non-trivial example of an Lp improving measure.

It is known [Herman Weyl, 1910] that every linear second-order differential expression L (with real coefficients) is such that Ly = λy (im λ ≠ 0) has at least one solution belonging to the class L2 = L2[0, ∞) of functions, the squares of whose moduli are Lebesgue-integrable on [0, ∞). This celebrated result was later proved by E. C. Titchmarsh (1940–1944), using sophisticated analysis of bilinear transformation. The aim of the present note is to prove the same result once again, but using only elementary analysis and school geometry. The power of this method will be appreciated further when one realises the amount of simplifications that can be acheived by this expressions. This part of the note course will be taken up in a subsequent paper.

Let R be a ring with 1 and En (R) be the subgroup of GLn(R) generated by the matrices I + reij, r ∈ R, i ≠ j. We prove that the subgroup of consisting of the matrices of shape , where and , is (2, 3, 7)-generated whenever R is finitely generated and n, are large enough.

Let $G$ be a finite group with $\mathsf{soc}(G)=\text{A}_{c}$ for $c\geq 5$. A characterization of the subgroups with square-free index in $G$ is given. Also, it is shown that a $(G,2)$-arc-transitive graph of square-free order is isomorphic to a complete graph, a complete bipartite graph with a matching deleted or one of $11$ other graphs.

An attempt is made to extend the theory of extensions of partial orders in groups to strict partially ordered N-groups. Necessary and sufficient conditions, for a strict partial order of an N-group to have a strict full extension, and for a strict partial order of an N-group to be an intersection of strict full orders, are obtained when the partially ordered near-ring N and the N-group G satisfy the condition (− x) n = − xn for all elements x in G and positive elements n in N.

We present structural properties of the complex associative algebra generated by the canonical commutation relations in exponential form. In particular, we show it to be a central simple algebra that lacks zero divisors and is not Noetherian on either side; in addition, we determine explicitly its units and its automorphisms.

We exhibit a sequence (un) which is not uniformly distributed modulo one even though for each fixed integer k ≥ 2 the sequence (kun) is u.d. (mod 1). Within the set of all such sequences, we characterize those with a well-behaved asymptotic distribution function. We exhibit a sequence (un) which is u.d. (mod 1) even though no subsequence of the form (ukn + j) is u.d. (mod 1) for any k ≥ 2. We prove that, if the subsequences (ukn) are u.d. (mod 1) for all squarefree k which are products of primes in a fixed set P, then (un) is u.d. (mod I) if the sum of the reciprocals of the primes in P diverges. We show that this result is the best possible of its type.

Let be a space of points x, a σ-field of subsets of a σ-finite measure on . The elements of will be called measurable sets and all the sets considered in this paper are measurable sets. A real-valued point function t(x) on will be said to be measurabl if, for each real α, the set {x: t(x)≦ α} is measurable. Let (S), S C denote the σ-field of all measurable subsets of S. A real-valued function f(·) on will be called a set function.

In this paper we begin with a short, direct proof that the Banach algebra B(l1) is not amenable. We continue by showing that various direct sums of matrix algebras are not amenable either, for example the direct sum of the finite dimensional algebras is no amenable for 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞, p ≠ 2. Our method of proof naturally involves free group algebras, (by which we mean certain subalgebras of B(X) for some space X with symmetric basis—not necessarily X = l2) and we introduce the notion of ‘relative amenability’ of these algebras.
