Using the notion of discrete Morse function introduced by R. Forman for finite cw-complexes, we generalize it to the infinite 2-dimensional case in order to get the corresponding version of the well-known discrete Morse inequalities on a non-compact triangulated 2-manifold without boundary and with finite homology. We also extend them for the more general case of a non-compact triangulated 2-pseudo-manifold with a finite number of critical simplices and finite homology.

We construct a spectral sequence that computes the generalized homology E*(∏ Xα) of a product of spectra. The E2-term of this spectral sequence consists of the right derived functors of product in the category of E*E-comodules, and the spectral sequence always converges when E is the Johnson-Wilson theory E(n) and the Xα are Ln-local. We are able to prove some results about the E2-term of this spectral sequence; in particular, we show that the E(n)-homology of a product of E(n)-module spectra Xα is just the comodule product of the E(n)*Xα. This spectral sequence is relevant to the chromatic splitting conjecture.

In this paper, the authors consider the behavior on BMO() and Campanato spaces for the higher-dimensional Marcinkiewicz integral operator which is defined by where Ω is homogeneous of degree zero, has mean value zero and is integrable on the unit sphere. Under certain weak regularity condition on Ω, the authors prove that if f belongs to BMO() or to a certain Campanato space, then [μΩ(f)]2 is either infinite everywhere or finite almost everywhere, and in the latter case, some kind of boundedness is also obtained. The corresponding Lusin area integral is also considered.

We give new examples of affine sufaces whose rings of coordinates are d-simple and use these examples to construct simple nonholonomic D-modules over these surfaces.

Let X be a Banach function space over a nonatomic probability space. We investigate certain martingale inequalities in X that generalize those studied by A. M. Garsia. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on X for the inequalities to be valid.

In this paper we solve partially an open problem raised by B. Ricceri (Bull. London Math. Soc.33 (2001), 331–340). Infinitely many solutions for a Neumann problem are obtained through a direct variational approach where the nonlinearity has an oscillatory behaviour at infinity.

Except for blocks with a cyclic or Klein four defect group, it is not known in general whether the Morita equivalence class of a block algebra over a field of prime characteristic determines that of the corresponding block algebra over a p-adic ring. We prove this to be the case when the defect group is quaternion of order 8 and the block algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 2 is Morita equivalent to kÃ4. The main ingredients are Erdmann's classification of tame blocks [6] and work of Cabanes and Picaronny [4, 5] on perfect isometries between tame blocks.

Second order nonlinear delay differential equations with positive delays are considered, and sufficient conditions are given that guarantee the existence of positive increasing solutions on the half-line with first order derivatives tending to zero at infinity. The approach is elementary and is essentially based on an old idea which appeared in the author's paper Arch. Math. (Basel)36 (1981), 168–178. The application of the result obtained to second order Emden-Fowler type differential equations with constant delays and, especially, to second order linear differential equations with constant delays, is also presented. Moreover, some (general or specific) examples demonstrating the applicability of the main result are given.

In this paper, we establish some inequalities among the Lp-centroid body, the Lp-polar projection body, the Lp-John ellipsoid and its dual, which are the strengthened version of known results. We also prove inequalities among the polar of the Lp-centroid body, the Lp-polar projection body, the Lp-John ellipsoid and its dual.

In this paper we deal with some boundary value problems related with diffusion processes in the presence of lower and upper solutions. Singularities as well as non local boundary conditions are allowed. We also prove the existence of extremal solutions and the uniqueness of solution for a particular case.

D. Brannan's conjecture says that for 0 <α,β≤1, |x|=1, and n∈N one has |A2n−1(α,β,x)|≤|A2n−1(α,β,1)|, where We prove this for the case α=β, and also prove a differentiated version of the Brannan conjecture. This has applications to estimates for Gegenbauer polynomials and also to coefficient estimates for univalent functions in the unit disk that are ‘starlike with respect to a boundary point’. The latter application has previously been conjectured by H. Silverman and E. Silvia. The proofs make use of various properties of the Gauss hypergeometric function.

We prove a generalisation of an observation of N. Iwahori concerning the coefficients of the extended Dynkin diagram of a complex simple Lie algebra. We relate the combinatorics of these coefficients to the orders of finite groups that act discontinuously on the Riemann sphere and to the Plücker formulae.

Let , let be the quantum function algebra – over – associated to G, and let be the specialisation of the latter at a root of unity ϵ, whose order ℓ is odd. There is a quantum Frobenius morphism that embeds the function algebra of G, in as a central Hopf subalgebra, so that is a module over . When , it is known by [3], [4] that (the complexification of) such a module is free, with rank ℓdim(G). In this note we prove a PBW-like theorem for , and we show that – when G is Matn or GLn – it yields explicit bases of over . As a direct application, we prove that and are free Frobenius extensions over and , thus extending some results of [5].

We study an interesting class of Banach function algebras of infinitely differentiable functions on perfect, compact plane sets. These algebras were introduced by H. G. Dales and A. M. Davie in 1973, called Dales-Davie algebras and denoted by D(X, M), where X is a perfect, compact plane set and M = {M n }∞ n = 0 is a sequence of positive numbers such that M 0 = 1 and (m + n)!/M m+n ≤ (m!/M m )(n!/M n ) for m, n ∈ N. Let d = lim sup(n!/Mn )1/n and Xd = {z ∈ C : dist(z, X) ≤ d}. We show that, under certain conditions on X, every f ∈ D(X, M) has an analytic extension to X d . Let DP [D R ]) be the subalgebra of all f ∈ D(X, M) that can be approximated by the restriction to X of polynomials [rational functions with poles off X]. We show that the maximal ideal space of D P is , the polynomial convex hull of X d , and the maximal ideal space of D R is X d . Using some formulae from combinatorial analysis, we find the maximal ideal space of certain subalgebras of Dales-Davie algebras.

Motivated by the recent work due to Warnaar (2005), two new and elementary proofs are presented for a very useful q-difference equation on eight shifted factorials of infinite order. As the common source of theta function identities, this q-difference equation is systematically explored to review old and establish new identities on Ramanujan's partition functions. Most of the identities obtained can be interpreted in terms of theorems on classical partitions.

In this paper, we give a characterization of Clifford tori and in a unit sphere S n+1 (1). Our results extend the results due to Cheng and Yau [4], and Wang and Xia [11].
