The main theme of this paper can be described as a study of the Drazin inverse for bounded linear operators in a Banach space X when 0 is an isolated spectral point ofthe operator. This inverse is useful for instance in the solution of differential equations formulated in a Banach space X. Since the elements of X rarely enter into our considerations, the exposition seems to gain in clarity when the operators are regarded as elements of the Banach algebra L(X).

A well-known theorem of E. Posner [10] states that if the composition d1d2 of derivations d1d2 of a prime ring A of characteristic not 2 is a derivation, then either d1 = 0 or d2 = 0. A number of authors have generalized this theorem in several ways (see e.g. [1], [2], and [5], where further references can be found). Under stronger assumptions when A is the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Banach space (resp. Hilbert space), Posner's theorem was reproved in [3] (resp. [12]). Recently, M. Mathieu [8] extended Posner's theorem to arbitrary C*-algebras.

In this paper, we show new results on slant submanifolds of an almost contact metric manifold. We study and characterize slant submanifolds of K-contact and Sasakian manifolds. We also study the special class of three-dimensional slant submanifolds. We give several examples of slant submanifolds.

We present a general scheme to derive higher-order members of the Painlevé VI (PVI) hierarchy of ODE's as well as their difference analogues. The derivation is based on a discrete structure that sits on the background of the PVI equation and that consists of a system of partial difference equations on a multidimensional lattice. The connection with the isomonodromic Garnier systems is discussed.

Let A be a noetherian ring. When A is commutative (of finite Krull dimension), A is said to be Gorenstein if its injective dimension is finite. If A has finite global dimension, one says that A is regular. If A is arbitrary, these hypotheses are not sufficient to obtain similar results to those of the commutative case. To remedy this problem, M. Auslander has introduced a supplementary condition. Before stating it, we recall that the grade of a finitely generated (left or right) module is defined by

First we define the notion of k-Ricci curvature of a Riemannian n-manifold. Then we establish sharp relations between the k-Ricci curvature and the shape operator and also between the k-Ricci curvature and the squared mean curvature for a submanifold in a Riemannian space form with arbitrary codimension. Several applications of such relationships are also presented.

In [1], J. M. Howie considered the semigroup of transformations of sets and proved (Theorem 1) that every transformation of a finite set which is not a permutation can be written as a product of idempotents. In view of the analogy between the theories of transformations of finite sets and linear transformations of finite dimensional vector spaces, Howie's theorem suggests a corresponding result for matrices. The purpose of this note is to prove such a result.

A bounded monotonic sequence is convergent. This paper shows that a bounded sequence which is g-monotonic (to be defined) also converges. The proof generalises one attributed to Professor R. A. Rankin by Copson [1]. The theorem requires two definitions: the first axiomatises the notion of “average“ and the second generalises the concept of monotonicity.

Bass [1] proved that if R is a left perfect ring, then R contains no infinite sets of orthogonal idempotents and every nonzero left R-module has a maximal submodule, and asked if this property characterizes left perfect rings ([1], Remark (ii), p. 470). The fact that this is true for commutative rings was proved by Hamsher [12], and that this is not true in general was demonstrated by examples of Cozzens [7] and Koifman [14]. Hamsher's result for commutative rings has been extended to some noncommutative rings. Call a ring left duo if every left ideal is two-sided; Chandran [5] proved that Bass’ conjecture is true for left duo rings. Call a ring R weakly left duo if for every r ε R, there exists a natural number n(r) (depending on r) such that the principal left ideal Rrn(r) is two-sided. Recently, Xue [21] proved that Bass’ conjecture is still true for weakly left duo rings.

The structure of a bisimple inverse semigroup with an identity has been related by Clifford [2] to that of its right unit subsemigroup. In this paper we give an explicit structure theorem for bisimple inverse semigroups in which the idempotents form a simple descending chain

We call such a semigroup a bisimple co-semigroup. The structure of a semigroup of this kind is shown to be determined entirely by its group of units and an endomorphism of its group of units.

so that p(n) is the number of unrestricted partitions of n. Ramanujan [1] conjectured in 1919 that if q = 5, 7, or 11, and 24m ≡ 1 (mod qn), then p(m) ≡ 0 (mod qn). He proved his conecture for n = 1 and 2†, but it was not until 1938 that Watson [4] proved the conjecture for q = 5 and all n, and a suitably modified form for q = 7 and all n. (Chowla [5] had previously observed that the conjecture failed for q = 7 and n = 3.) Watson's method of modular equations, while theoretically available for the case q = 11, does not seem to be so in practice even with the help of present-day computers. Lehner [6, 7] has developed an essentially different method, which, while not as powerful as Watson's in the cases where Γ0(q) has genus zero, is applicable in principle to all primes q without prohibitive calculation. In particular he proved the conjecture for q = 11 and n = 3 in [7]. Here I shall prove the conjecture for q = 11 and all n, following Lehner's approach rather than Watson's. According to the well-known Nash's theorem, every Riemannian n-manifold admits an isometric immersion into the Euclidean space En(n+1)(3n+11)/2. In general, there exist enormously many isometric immersions from a Riemannian manifold into Euclidean spaces if no restriction on the codimension is made. For a submanifold of a Riemannian manifold there are associated several extrinsic invariants beside its intrinsic invariants. Among the extrinsic invariants, the mean curvature function and shape operator are the most fundamental ones.

An associative ring with unity is called clean if every element is the sum of an idempotent and a unit; if this representation is unique for every element, we call the ring uniquely clean. These rings represent a natural generalization of the Boolean rings in that a ring is uniquely clean if and only if it is Boolean modulo the Jacobson radical and idempotents lift uniquely modulo the radical. We also show that every image of a uniquely clean ring is uniquely clean, and construct several noncommutative examples.

An operator T on a Banach space is called ‘semi B-Fredholm’ if for some n \in {\tf="times-b"N} the range R(T\;\!^n) of T\;\!^n is closed and the induced operator T_n on R(T\;\!^n) semi-Fredholm. Semi B-Fredholm operators are stable under finite rank perturbation, and subject to the spectral mapping theorem; on Hilbert spaces they decompose as sums of nilpotent and semi-Fredholm operators. In addition some recent generalizations of the punctured neighborhood theorem turn out to be consequences of Grabiner's theory of ‘topological uniform descent’.

The problem of characterizing the relatively weakly compact subsets of L1(Ω, X) remains open. It is known that for a bounded subset of L1(μ, X) to be relatively weakly compact it is necessary that the set be uniformly integrable; recall that K ⊆ L1, (μ, X) is uniformly integrable whenever given ε >0 there exists δ > 0 such that if μ (E) ≦ δ then ∫E∥f∥ dμ ≦ δ, for all f ∈ K. S. Chatterji has noted that in case X is reflexive this condition is also sufficient [4]. At present unless one assumes that both X and X* have the Radon-Nikodym Property (see [1]), a rather severe restriction which, for purposes of potential applicability, is tantamount to assuming reflexivity, no good sufficient conditions for weak compactness in L1(μ, X) exist. This note puts forth such sufficient conditions; the basic tool is the recent factorization method of W. J. Davis, T. Figiel, W. B. Johnson and A. Pelczynski [3].

In this paper, we introduce an integral operator on the unit ball . The boundedness and compactness of the operator from the Zygmund space to the Bloch-type space or the little Bloch-type space are investigated.

Let $R$ be a ring. An $R$-module $M$ is called a (weak) duo module provided every (direct summand) submodule of $M$ is fully invariant. It is proved that if $R$ is a commutative domain with field of fractions $K$ then a torsion-free uniform $R$-module is a duo module if and only if every element $k$ in $K$ such that $kM$ is contained in $M$ belongs to $R$. Moreover every non-zero finitely generated torsion-free duo $R$-module is uniform. In addition, if $R$ is a Dedekind domain then a torsion $R$-module is a duo module if and only if it is a weak duo module and this occurs precisely when the $P$-primary component of $M$ is uniform for every maximal ideal $P$ of $R$.
