The trace on matrix rings, along with the augmentation map and Kaplansky trace on group rings, are some of the many examples of linear functions on algebras that vanish on all commutators. We generalize and unify these examples by studying traces on (contracted) semigroup rings over commutative rings. We show that every such ring admits a minimal trace (i.e., one that vanishes only on sums of commutators), classify all minimal traces on these rings, and give applications to various classes of semigroup rings and quotients thereof. We then study traces on Leavitt path algebras (which are quotients of contracted semigroup rings), where we describe all linear traces in terms of central maps on graph inverse semigroups and, under mild assumptions, those Leavitt path algebras that admit faithful traces.

We generalise statements known about Springer fibres associated to nilpotents with two Jordan blocks to Spaltenstein varieties. We study the geometry of generalised irreducible components (i.e. Bialynicki-Birula cells) and their pairwise intersections. In particular, we develop a graphical calculus that encodes their structure as iterated fibre bundles with ℂℙ1 as base spaces, and compute their cohomology. At the end, we present a connection with coloured cobordisms generalising the construction of Khovanov (M. Khovanov, A categorification of the Jones polynomial, Duke Math. J. 101(3) (2000), 359–426) and Stroppel (C. Stroppel, Parabolic category O, perverse sheaves on Grassmannians, Springer fibres and Khovanov homology, Compositio Mathematica145(4) (2009), 954–992).

The Arens products are the standard way of extending the product from a Banach algebra to its bidual ″. Ultrapowers provide another method which is more symmetric, but one that in general will only give a bilinear map, which may not be associative. We show that if is Arens regular, then there is at least one way to use an ultrapower to recover the Arens product, a result previously known for C*-algebras. Our main tool is a principle of local reflexivity result for modules and algebras.

We define a subset $\mathcal Z$ of $(1,+\infty)$ with the property that for each $\alpha \in {\mathcal Z}$ there is a nonzero real number $\xi = \xi(\alpha)$ such that the integral parts $[\xi \alpha^n]$ are even for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$. A result of Tijdeman implies that each number greater than or equal to 3 belongs to $\mathcal{Z}$. However, Mahler's question on whether the number 3/2 belongs to $\mathcal{Z}$ or not remains open. We prove that the set ${\mathcal S}:=(1,+\infty) \textbackslash {\mathcal Z}$ is nonempty and find explicitly some numbers in ${\mathcal Z} \cap$ (5/4,3) and in ${\mathcal S} \cap (1,2)$.

Let A be an n × n complex matrix and c = (c1… cn) єℂn. Define the c-numerical range of A to be the set is an orthonormal set in , where * denotes the conjugate transpose. Westwick [8[ proved that if c … cn are collinear, then Wc(A) is convex. (Poon [6] gave another proof.) But in general for n ≧3, Wc(A) may fail to be convex even for normal A (for example, see Marcus [4] or Lemma 3 in this note) though it is star-shaped (Tsing [7]). In the following, we shall assume that A is normal. Let W(A) = {diag UAU*: U is unitary}. Horn [3] proved that if the eigenvalues of A are collinear, then W(A) is convex. Au-Yeung and Sing [2] showed that the converse is also true. Marcus [4] further conjectured (and proved for n = 3) that if Wc(A) is convex for all cєℂn then the eigenvalues of A are collinear. Let λ = (λ1, …, λn єℂn. We denote by the vector λ1, …, λn and by [λ] the diagonal matrix with λ1, …, λn lying on its diagonal. Since, for any unitary matrix U,. Wc(A) = Wc (UAU*), the Marcus conjecture reduces to: if Wc([λ]) is convex for all c єℂn then λ1, … λn are collinear. For the case n = 3, Au-Yeung and Poon [1] gave a complete characterization on the convexity of the set Wc([λ]) in terms of the relative position of the points , where σ є S3 the permutation group of order 3. As an example they showed that if λ1, λ2, λ3 are not collinear, then is not convex (Lemma 3 in this note gives another proof). We shall show that for the case n = 4, is not convex if λ1, λ2. λ3. λ4 are not collinear. Thus for n = 3, 4 the Marcus conjecture is answered and improved.

We investigate the function R(T,σ), which denotes the error term in the asymptotic formula for \int_0^T|\log\zeta(σ + it)|^2dt. It is shown thatR(T,σ) is uniformly bounded for σ \ge 1 and almost periodic in the sense of Bohr for fixed σ \ge 1; hence R(T,σ) = Ω(1) when T \to \infty. In case {1 \over 2}<σ<1 is fixed we can obtain the bound R(T,σ) \ll_ϵ T\,^{(9-2σ)/8+ϵ}.

Motivated by a problem in mathematical economics [4] Gretsky and Ostroy have shown [5] that every positive operator T:L1[0, 1] → c0 is a Dunford-Pettis operator (i.e. T maps weakly convergent sequences to norm convergent ones), and hence that the same is true for every regular operator from L1[0, 1] to c0. In a recent paper [6] we showed the converse also holds, thereby characterizing the D–P operators by this condition. In each case the proof depends (as do so many concerning D–P operators on Ll[0, 1]) on the following well-known result (see, e.g., [2]): If μ is a finite measure, an operator T:L1(μ) → E is a D–P operator is compact, where i:L∞(μ) → L1(μ) is the canonical injection of L∞(μ) into L1(μ). If μ is not a finite measure this characterization of D–P operators is no longer available, and hence results based on its use (e.g. [5], [6]) do not always have straightforward extensions to the case of operators on more general L1(μ) spaces.

Let X be a Banach function space over a nonatomic probability space. We investigate certain martingale inequalities in X that generalize those studied by A. M. Garsia. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on X for the inequalities to be valid.

In this paper we study a seemingly unnoticed property of bases in a Hilbert space that falls in the general area of constructing new bases from old, yet is quite atypical of others in this regard. Namely, if $\{x_n\}$ is any normalized basis for a Hilbert space $ H $ and $ \{\,f_n\}$ the associated basis of coefficient functionals, then the sequence $\{x_n+f_n\} $ is again a basis for $ H $. The unusual aspect of this observation is that the basis $ \{x_n+f_n\} $ obtained in this way from $\{x_n\} $ and $ \{\,f_n\} $ need not be equivalent to either, in contrast to the standard techniques of constructing new bases from given ones by means of an isomorphism on $ H $. In this paper we study bases of this form and their relation to the component bases $ \{x_n\} $ and $ \{\,f_n\}$.

Let us consider a pair (S, H) consisting of a closed Riemann surface S and an Abelian group H of conformal automorphisms of S. We are interested in finding uniformizations of S, via Schottky groups, which reflect the action of the group H. A Schottky uniformization of a closed Riemann surface S is a triple (Ώ, G, π:Ώ→S) where G is a Schottky group with Ώ as its region ofdiscontinuity and π:Ώ→S is a holomorphic covering with G ascovering group. We look for a Schottky uniformization (Ώ, G, π:Ώ→S) of S such that for each transformation h in H there exists an automorphisms t of Ώ satisfying h ∘ π = π ∘ t.

A ring R is called a left APP-ring if the left annihilator lR(Ra) is pure as a left ideal of R for every a ∈ R; R is called (left principally) quasi-Baer if the left annihilator of every (principal) left ideal of R is generated by an idempotent. Let R be a ring and M an ordered monoid. Assume that there is a monoid homomorphism φ: M ⟶ Aut(R). We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the skew monoid ring (induced by φ) to be left APP (left principally quasi-Baer, quasi-Baer, respectively).

Let $G$ be a finite group; there exists a uniquely determined Dirichlet polynomial $P_G(s)$ such that if $t \in \mathbb N$, then $P_G(t)$ gives the probability of generating $G$ with $t$ randomly chosen elements. We show that if $P_G(s)=P_{\text{Alt}(n)}(s)$, then $G/\text{Frat}\, G\cong \text{Alt}(n).$

For each characteristic p, let Fp be the prime field and let Ώp be a fixed universal field which is algebraically closed and of infinite transcendence degree over Fp. When p = 0 we take Ώp = ℂ. Let F be a subfield of Ώp and let R be an integral domain whose quotient field is F. We abbreviate SL(2, R), PGL(2, R), PSL(2, R) to SL(R), PGL(R), PSL(R) respectively, and we cohsider PSL(R) as a group of projective transformations of the projective line ℘(Ώp) and of the “subline” ℘(F) ⊂ ℘(ΏP). The elements of PSL(R) are classified by the number of fixed points they have on ℘(F). If x ∈ PSL(R) has one such fixed point P, then P is the unique fixed point of x on ℘(ΏP) and x is called parabolic. All other x (except the identity E) have two distinct fixed points on ℘(Ώp) and x is called hyperbolic if these are on ℘(F), and elliptic otherwise. We put symbols for operators on the right.

We show that the commutative V*-algebras with relatively weakly compact unit spheres are those that are representable by means of hermitian spectral measures. This provides a more unified approach to the results of [15], and allows us to generalise some of them.

The object of this paper is to evaluate a few infinite integrals involving E-functions by applying the Parseval-Goldstein [1] theorem of Operational Calculus; that, if

The purpose of this paper is to prove a theorem which concerns the normal subgroup of a free product Π generated by a given subset Ω. This theorem was stated in the first paper of this series (Britton [1]) and an application was made to the word problem. The present work is, however, independent.

Lutwak (Adv. Math., vol. 118(2), 1996, pp. 244–294) defined the notion of Lp-geominimal surface area based on Lp-mixed volumes. Recently, Wang and Qi (J. Inequal. Appl., vol. 2011, 2011, pp. 1–10) introduced the concept of Lp-dual geominimal surface area based on Lp-dual mixed volumes. In this paper, based on Lp-dual mixed quermassintegrals, we define the concept of Lp-dual mixed geominimal surface area and establish several inequalities for this new notion.

We construct a calculus of functors in the spirit of orthogonal calculus, which is designed to study ‘functors with reality’ such as the Real classifying space functor, . The calculus produces a Taylor tower, the n-th layer of which is classified by a spectrum with an action of . We further give model categorical considerations, producing a zigzag of Quillen equivalences between spectra with an action of and a model structure on the category of input functors which captures the homotopy theory of the n-th layer of the Taylor tower.
