In this paper we give conditions under which a positive order continuous operator T defined on a Banach function space can be extended, preserving the order continuity in a certain optimal way. The optimal domain for T turns out to be a space of weakly integrable functions with respect to a vector measure (defined on a δ-ring) canonically associated to T. A similar result is obtained when T is σ-order continuous and we want to preserve the σ-order continuity. We apply these results to kernel operators.

In § 2 a number of infinite series of E-functions are summed by expressing the E-functions as Barnes integrals and interchanging the order of summation and integration.

The Barnes integral employed is

where | amp z | < π and the integral is taken up the η;-axis, with loops, if necessary, to ensure that the origin lies to the left of the contour and the points α1, α2,… αp to the right of the contour. Zero and negative integral values of the α's and p's are excluded, and the α's must not differ by integral values. When p < q + 1 the contour is bent to the left at each end.

Stability conditions on triangulated categories were introduced by Bridgeland as a ‘continuous’ generalisation of t-structures. The set of locally-finite stability conditions on a triangulated category is a manifold that has been studied intensively. However, there are mainstream triangulated categories whose stability manifold is the empty set. One example is Dc(k[X]/(X2)), the compact derived category of the dual numbers over an algebraically closed field k. This is one of the motivations in this paper for introducing co-stability conditions as a ‘continuous’ generalisation of co-t-structures. Our main result is that the set of nice co-stability conditions on a triangulated category is a manifold. In particular, we show that the co-stability manifold of Dc(k[X]/(X2)) is ℂ.

All of the above extends naturally to the n x n case.

We determine the rings of invariants $S^G$ where $S$ is the symmetric algebra on the dual of a vector space $V$ over ${\mathbb F}_2$ and $G$ is the orthogonal group preserving a non-singular quadratic form on $V$. The invariant ring is shown to have a presentation in which the difference between the number of generators and the number of relations is equal to the minimum possibility, namely $\dim V$, and it is shown to be a complete intersection. In particular, the rings of invariants computed here are all Gorenstein and hence Cohen-Macaulay.

We show, under some natural restrictions, that orbits of polynomials cannot contain too many elements of small multiplicative order modulo a large prime p. We also show that for all but finitely many initial points either the multiplicative order of this point or the length of the orbit it generates (both modulo a large prime p) is large. The approach is based on the results of Dvornicich and Zannier (Duke Math. J.139 (2007), 527–554) and Ostafe (2017) on roots of unity in polynomial orbits over the algebraic closure of the field of rational numbers.

Except for blocks with a cyclic or Klein four defect group, it is not known in general whether the Morita equivalence class of a block algebra over a field of prime characteristic determines that of the corresponding block algebra over a p-adic ring. We prove this to be the case when the defect group is quaternion of order 8 and the block algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 2 is Morita equivalent to kÃ4. The main ingredients are Erdmann's classification of tame blocks [6] and work of Cabanes and Picaronny [4, 5] on perfect isometries between tame blocks.

We construct a spectral sequence that computes the generalized homology E*(∏ Xα) of a product of spectra. The E2-term of this spectral sequence consists of the right derived functors of product in the category of E*E-comodules, and the spectral sequence always converges when E is the Johnson-Wilson theory E(n) and the Xα are Ln-local. We are able to prove some results about the E2-term of this spectral sequence; in particular, we show that the E(n)-homology of a product of E(n)-module spectra Xα is just the comodule product of the E(n)*Xα. This spectral sequence is relevant to the chromatic splitting conjecture.

The nth order polylogarithm Lin(z) is defined for |z| ≦ 1 by

([4, p. 169], cf. [2, §1. 11 (14) and § 1. 11. 1]). The definition can be extended to all values of zin the z-plane cut along the real axis from 1 to ∝ by the formula

In Section 33 of [2], Bonsall and Duncan define an element t of a Banach algebra to act compactly on if the map a → tat is a compact operator on . In this paper, the arguments and technique of [1] are used to study this question for C*-algebras (see also [10]). We determine the elements b of a C*-algebra for which the maps a→ba, a→ab, a→ab + ba, a→bab are compact (respectively weakly compact), determine the C*-algebras which are compact in the sense of Definition 9, of [2, p. 177] and give a characterization of the *-automorphisms of which are weakly compact perturbations of the identity.

We present an elementary proof of the theorem, usually attributed to Noether, that if L/K is a tame finite Galois extension of local fields, then is a free -module where Γ=Gal(L/K. The attribution to Noether is slightly misleading as she only states and proves the result in the case where the residual characteristic of K does not divide the order of Γ [4]. In this case is a maximal order in KΓ which is not true for general groups Γ. There is an elegant proof in the standard reference [2], but this relies on a difficult result in representation theory due to Swan. Our proof depends on a close examination of the structure of tame local extensions, and uses only elementary facts about local fields. It also gives an explicit construction of a generator element, and the same proof works both for localizations of number fields and of global function fields.

We consider the problem of defining the structure of a smooth manifold on the various spaces of piecewise-smooth loops in a smooth finite-dimensional manifold. We succeed for a particular type of piecewise-smooth loops. We also examine the action of the diffeomorphism group of the circle. It is not a useful action on the manifold that we define. We consider how one might fix this problem and conclude that it can only be done by completing to the space of loops of bounded variation.

This paper deals with the Green ring $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})$ of a finite tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ with finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable objects over an algebraically closed field. The first part of this paper deals with the question of when the Green ring $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})$, or the Green algebra $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})\otimes_{\mathbb {Z}}$K over a field K, is Jacobson semisimple (namely, has zero Jacobson radical). It turns out that $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})\otimes_{\mathbb {Z}}$K is Jacobson semisimple if and only if the Casimir number of $\mathcal{C}$ is not zero in K. For the Green ring $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})$ itself, $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})$ is Jacobson semisimple if and only if the Casimir number of $\mathcal{C}$ is not zero. The second part of this paper focuses on the case where $\mathcal{C}=\text{Rep}(\mathbb {k}G)$ for a cyclic group G of order p over a field $\mathbb {k}$ of characteristic p. In this case, the Casimir number of $\mathcal{C}$ is computable and is shown to be 2p2. This leads to a complete description of the Jacobson radical of the Green algebra $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})\otimes_{\mathbb {Z}}$K over any field K.

In this paper we study fundamental properties of spectra of log-hyponormal operators on a Hilbert space. In particular we show that log-hyponormal operators are normaloid and quasi-similar log-hyponormal operators have the same spectra and essential spectra.

In this paper we study prime and maximal ideals in a polynomial ring R[X], where R is a ring with identity element. It is well-known that to study many questions we may assume Ris prime and consider just R-disjoint ideals. We give a characterizaton for an R-disjoint ideal to be prime. We study conditions under which there exists an R-disjoint ideal which is a maximal ideal and when this is the case how to determine all such maximal ideals. Finally, we prove a theorem giving several equivalent conditions for a maximal ideal to be generated by polynomials of minimal degree.

In this paper we investigate the most general dichotomy concept of evolutionary processes. This dichotomy concept includes many interesting situations, among them we note the nonuniform dichotomy. We characterize the $(a,b)$-dichotomy in terms of the admissibility of the pair $(L^1_a, L^{\infty}_b)$. Also, generalizations of the results of [20], [23] are obtained.

In a recent paper [3], D. W. Lewis proposed the following conjecture. (The notation is the same as that in [2] and [3].)

Conjecture. Let F be a field of characteristic not 2 and let a1, b1…, an, bn ∈ Fx. The tensor product of quaternion algebras

is a division algebra if and only if the quadratic form over F

is anisotropic.

This equivalence indeed holds for n = 1 as is well known [2, Theorem 2.7], and Albert [1] (see also [4, §15.7]) has shown that it also holds for n = 2. The aim of this note is to provide counterexamples to both of the implications for n ≥ 3.

Let $G(o)$ and $G(*)$ be two groups of finite order $n$, and suppose that each of the sets $\{u\in G;\ uo v=u*v$ for all $v\in G\}$ and $\{v\in G;\ uo v=u*v$ for all $u\in G\}$ has $n/2$ elements. Then $G(*)$ can be obtained from $G(o)$ by one of the two general constructions that are discussed in the paper.

We obtain explicit expressions for genus 2 degenerate sigma-function in terms of genus 1 sigma-function and elementary functions as solutions of a system of linear partial differential equations satisfied by the sigma-function. By way of application, we derive a solution for a class of generalized Jacobi inversion problems on elliptic curves, a family of Schrödinger-type operators on a line with common spectrum consisting of a point and two segments, explicit construction of a field of three-periodic meromorphic functions. Generators of rank 3 lattice in ℂ2 are given explicitly.

Let X be an infinite, locally finite, almost transitive graph with polynomial growth. We show that such a graph X is the inverse limit of an infinite sequence of finite graphs satisfying growth conditions which are closely related to growth properties of the infinite graph X.
