The prevailing concept that positive-edge to negative-face attraction accounts for the rheological behavior of montmorillonite suspensions at low electrolyte concentration was investigated. In one experiment, Mg2+ released from Na-montmorillonite was measured at several NaCl concentrations; in a second experiment, the viscosity, η, and the extrapolated shear stress, θ, were measured at several clay concentrations, pHs, and NaCl concentrations; and in a third experiment, the absorbance, A, was measured at two wavelengths (450 and 760 nm) at different clay and electrolyte concentrations. The released Mg2+ decreased with increasing NaCl concentration until it became zero at a NaCl concentration between 0.01 and 0.02 M, depending on pH. Thereafter, it increased with increasing NaCl concentration. Both θ and η were highly correlated with the amount of released Mg2+. Also, A remained constant until the NaCl concentration corresponded to that at the minimum of θ. Thereafter, it increased and became linearly related to θ. These results suggest: (1) positive-edge to negative-face interaction cannot solely account for the rheological properties of montmorillonite at low electrolyte concentration, and (2) the release of octahedral Mg2+ from montmorillonite affects θ, because it reduces the negative charge on the particles and, thereby, the repulsive force between them.

Amorphous derivates prepared by aqueous reaction of various aluminosilicate clay minerals with concentrated KF solution at 80–110°C were studied for their gas adsorption properties. The four clay minerals studied are halloysite, a well-crystallized kaolinite, a poorly crystallized kaolinite, and a montmorillonite. The gases tested are N2, O2, CH4, CO, CO2, and C2H2. The kaolin-group mineral derivatives are characterized by substantial reduction in particle size, high specific surface, and significant selectivity towards CO2 and C2H2 relative to the other gases. The montmorillonite derivative shows no increase in adsorption over the starting material, however, for all the materials high adsorption of CO2 and C2H2 was observed. Levels of gas adsorption and gas adsorption ratios are comparable to pillared clays.

Chemically modified bentonites are being developed with the aim of preserving low hydraulic conductivity in the presence of potentially aggressive permeants in pollutant-containment applications. ‘Multiswellable’ bentonite (MSB) has been obtained by treating standard sodium bentonite with propylene carbonate. Research on the engineering properties of MSB has focused mainly on permeability and chemical compatibility. Solute diffusion and membrane behavior in MSB have not yet been investigated. A combined chemico-osmotic/diffusion test was performed on a MSB specimen using a 5 mM CaCl2 solution. Permeability with distilled water and with the 5 mM CaCl2 solution was measured prior to and after the chemico-osmotic/diffusion tests. The material exhibited time-dependent membrane behavior with a peak osmotic efficiency value (ω) of 0.172 that gradually shifted to zero upon breakthrough of calcium ions. Effective diffusion coefficients of calcium and chloride ions were in the range commonly described for untreated bentonite at similar porosities. After the chemico-osmotic/diffusion stage and permeation with 5 mM CaCl2, the hydraulic conductivity of MSB increased from 1.1 × 10−11 m/s to 7.0 × 10−11 m/s. The MSB was apparently converted into a calcium-exchanged bentonite at the end of the test. Prehydration and subsequent permeation might have contributed to elution of the organic additive from the clay. Further investigation is recommended to clarify the effect of prehydration on the hydraulic performance of MSB in the presence of potentially aggressive permeants.

Intercalation of naphthalene and anthracene into alkyltrimethylammonium (CnH2n+1(CH3)3N+; n = 8, 12, 14, 16, and 18)-montmorillonites was carried out by novel solid-solid reactions at room temperature. Octyltrimethylammonium(C8)-montmorillonite did not form an intercalation compound with either naphthalene or anthracene. Naphthalene was intercalated into both dodecyltrimethylammonium(C12)- and octadecyltrimethylammonium(C18)-montmorillonites to give intercalation compounds. On the other hand, the solid-solid reaction between dodecyltrimethylammonium(C12)- or tetradecyltrimethylammonium(C14)-montmorillonite and anthracene gave only partly intercalated compounds while hexadecyltrimethylammonium(C16)- and octadecyltrimethylammonium(C18)-montmorillonites gave single phase intercalation compounds. The hydrophobic interactions between alkylammonium-montmorillonites and the aromatic compounds are thought to be the driving force for the solid-state intercalation. The extent of the increase in the basal spacing may also be involved in the different reactivity.

Microbial reduction of clay mineral structural Fe(III) decreases the swelling of nontronite gels, most importantly at intermediate oxidation states (40 to 80 cmol Fe(II) kg−1 clay). The purpose of this study was to establish whether microbial reduction of structural Fe(III) decreased the swelling of other Fe-bearing smectites and to discern the influence that organic compounds of microbial origin (bacterial cells, cell fragments and/or exudates) may have on clay swelling and texture. Structural Fe(III) was reduced by incubating smectite suspensions with either a combination of Pseudomonas bacteria or a mixture of anaerobic bacteria. The influence of organics on clay swelling was estimated on smectites suspended in either organic or inorganic media in the absence of bacteria. The gravimetric water content of the reduced clay gels equilibrated at various applied pressures was recorded as a function of Fe oxidation state. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to determine the influence of bacteria and type of media on the texture of reduced smectite gels. Reduction of structural Fe(III) by bacteria decreased the swelling pressure of all Fe-bearing smectites. Increased clay swelling, due to the presence of organics (organic medium, exudates or cell fragments), was correlated to the total Fe content, the extent of structural Fe reduction, as well as the initial swelling characteristics of the Fe-bearing smectites. High structural Fe(II) contents (>50 cmol Fe(II) kg−1) resulted in increased attractive forces between clay platelets that decreased clay swelling, even in organic medium suspensions. Microbial reduction resulted in increased face-face association of individual clay layers, forming larger and more distinct crystallite subunits than in nonreduced clay gels. But, perhaps more importantly, microbial reduction of structural Fe(III) resulted in an increased association between crystallite subunits and, thus, an overall larger particle size and pore size distribution, due to the interaction of bacteria ceils, cell fragments and organic exudates.

Mixed-layer clays composed of randomly interstratified kerolite/stevensite occur as lake and/or spring deposits of probable Pliocene and Pleistocene age in the Amargosa Desert of southern Nevada, U.S.A. The percentage of expandable layers of these clays, determined from computer-simulated X-ray diffractograms, ranges from almost 0 to about 80%. This range in expandabilities most likely results from differences in solution chemistry and/or temperature at the time of formation. An average structural formula for the purest clay (sample P-7), a clay with about 70% expandable layers, is:

The data suggest that talc, kerolite, and stevensite form a continuous structural series based on layer charge.

Ferrihydrite prepared in different manners was kept under relative humidities ranging from 75 to 100% and at temperatures of 45° and 55°C for 180 days. Ferrihydrite transformed to hematite and goethite at relative humidities close to 100%, but at lower relative humidities the transformation was less pronounced and hematite was highly favored over goethite. Increasing temperature also favored hematite over goethite, and Al substitution completely prevented goethite formation. These results suggest that hematite can form in relatively dry, warm soils or sediments, although more slowly than in moister environments.

Intercalates from an ordered halloysite with urea and potassium acetate were studied using Raman microscopy. The urea intercalate showed new Raman bands at 3387, 3410, 3497 and 3598 cm−1 which were attributed to the formation of a urea-Si2O5 complex. New Raman bands were observed at 3585 and 3602 cm−1 for the potassium acetate intercalate with concomitant loss of intensity of the bands at 3635, 3655, 3675 and 3696 cm−1. These new bands were attributed to the hydrogen bonds formed between the acetate and the inner surface hydroxyl groups. Remarkable changes in intensity in the lattice region of the halloysite were observed, the foremost being the reduction of the intensity of the bands at 243, 271 and 336 cm−1. Pronounced changes in the bands at 913 and 143 cm−1 attributed to the Al-OH librations were also observed.

It is proposed that 2 distinct types of intercalation were present, as exemplified by: 1) urea intercalate, where the intercalating molecule hydrogen bonds to the Si-O of the halloysite layers and 2) potassium acetate intercalate, where the molecule is hydrogen-bonded to the inner surface hydroxyls of the halloysite layer and interacts with the tetrahedral sheet of the next adjacent halloysite layer. The Raman spectra of the intercalated halloysite strongly resembled that of an intercalated kaolinite.

Hectorite and saponite are exchanged with [Al13O4(OH)24(H2O)12]7+ and the amount of Al3+ adsorbed and Na+ released are followed as a function of the exchange conditions. On saponite the reaction is a pure ion exchange with 2–2.15 mmol Al3+/g adsorbed and release of 0.80 mmol Na+/g. On hectorite the ion exchange is accompanied by supplementary hydrolysis-polymerization of Al13. When excess Al is offered in the form of Al13, ion exchange is incomplete and is accompanied by precipitation and polymerization of Al13 on the surface of both hectorite and saponite. The typical spacing of 1.8 nm is developed after washing, when at least 1.3–1.4 mmol Al3+/g is adsorbed. Above a loading of 2.2–2.5 mmol/g the 1.8 nm spacing is obtained without washing. Only pillared saponite with a loading of at least 1.9 mmol Al3+/g is thermally stable up to 550°C.

The rapid phase quantification method using X-ray diffraction (XRD) with a position-sensitive detector (PSD), outlined by Cressey and Schofield (1996), has been extended to facilitate mineral phase quantification of clay-bearing samples. In addition, correction factors for differences in matrix absorption effects have been calculated and applied. The method now enables mudrock mineralogy to be quantified rapidly and efficiently. Using this approach overcomes many of the problems hitherto associated with the quantitative analysis of clay minerals, in particular the effects of preferred orientation of crystallites and variable sample-area irradiation, that make the task of quantification extremely difficult by conventional Bragg-Brentano scanning diffractometry.

Modification of the surfaces of montmorillonite (Mnt) by organic molecules is an effective method for improving their affinity toward non-aqueous substances, and has resulted in extensive industrial applications as rheological control agents, drilling fluids, and other functional materials used in applications ranging from environmental remediation to coatings. The present study reviewed recent progress in organo-modification of Mnt, and provides state-of-the-art insights into proposed modification mechanisms and the peculiar functionalities of the resulting organo-montmorillonite (OMnt). Several routes have been employed to modify Mnt, including ion exchange with organic ions, surface adsorption, and grafting of organics. Commonly used organic modifiers include cationic, anionic, zwitterionic, non-ionic, and polymeric species. Organo-modification is driven by multiple interactions: van der Waals forces, cation exchange, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonds, and ion–dipole interaction. OMnt, in general, exhibits synergistic and/or antagonistic effects when used in oil-based drilling fluids, environmental remediation, or layered silicate/polymer nanocomposites. The detailed mechanisms of non-ionic and zwitterionic modification of Mnt remain unclear. This literature survey suggests that future work should emphasize deeper understanding of interactions between the Mnt and the organic modifiers, and meanwhile expand the applications of OMnt into catalysis, drug carriers, and the biomedical field.

The compound Mg2+-Al3+-(Fe(CN)6)4−, with a structure similar to hydrotalcite Mg6Al2(OH)16CO3 ·4H2O, is prepared by a coprecipitation method. Chemical, thermal, and X-ray analysis of the compound lead to the formula: $(M{g}_{0.741}A{l}_{0.259}(OH{)}_2)((F{e}^{II}(CN{)}_6{)}_{0.067}(C{O}_3{)}_{0.002}(H_{2}O{)}_{1.05})$

The compound is dehydrated at 100° to 250°C, and the adsorption of N2, O2, CO2, and H2 on it is measured at −196°C to room temperature by the volumetric method. The water is removed reversibly from 100° to 200°C, and the interstices after dehyration act as sites of adsorption. When dehydration is carried out at 150°C, the adsorptive activity reaches a maximum. Adsorption isotherms of N2 and O2 at −196°C and of CO2 at room temperature are of the Langmuir type, and the saturated amounts of N2, O2, and CO2 adsorbed are 96.3, 65.2, and 91.8 ml (STP)/g, respectively.

Adsorption isotherms of N2 and O2 at room temperature are of the Henry type. The amount of O2 adsorbed is about 67% of that of N2. The isosteric heats of adsorption at room temperature of N2, O2, and CO2 are 5.1, 4.8, and 11.0 kcal/mol, respectively. A dehydrated product of a Mg2+-Al3+-CO32− compound does not permit adsorption of CO2 at room temperature, but permits the adsorption of H2O. Hence, it has a molecular sieve effect. No adsorption of H2 is observed in any of the compounds tested.

The reduction of structural Fe in smectite is mediated either abiotically, by reaction with dithionite, or biotically, by Fe-reducing bacteria. The effects of abiotic reduction on clay-surface chemistry are much better known than the effects of biotic reduction. Since bacteria are probably the principal agent for mediating redox processes in natural soils and sediments, further study is needed to ascertain the differences between biotic and abiotic reduction processes. The purpose of the present study was to compare the effects of dithionite (abiotic) and bacteria (biotic) reduction of structural Fe in smectites on the clay structure as observed by infrared spectroscopy. Three reference smectites, namely, Garfield nontronite, ferruginous smectite (SWa-1), and Upton, Wyoming, montmorillonite, were reduced to similar levels by either Shewanella oneidensis or by pH-buffered sodium dithionite. Each sample was then analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Parallel samples were reoxidized by bubbling O2 gas through the reduced suspension at room temperature prior to FTIR analysis. Redox states were quantified by chemical analysis, using 1, 10-phenanthroline. The reduction level achieved by dithionite was controlled to approximate that of the bacterial reduction treatment so that valid comparisons could be made between the two treatments. Bacterial reduction was achieved by incubating the Na-saturated smectites with S. oneidensis strain MR-1 in a minimal medium including 20 mM lactate. After redox treatment, the clay was washed four times with deoxygenated 5 mM NaCl. The sample was then prepared either as a self-supporting film for OH-stretching and deformation bands or as a deposit on ZnSe windows for Si-O stretching bands and placed inside a controlled atmosphere cell also fitted with ZnSe windows. The spectra from bacteria-treated samples were compared with dithionite-treated samples having a similar Fe(II) content. The changes observed in all three spectral regions (OH stretching, M2-O-H deformation, and Si-O stretching) for bacteria-reduced smectite were similar to results obtained at a comparable level of reduction by dithionite. In general, the shift of the structural OH vibration and the Si-O vibration, and the loss of intensity of OH groups, indicate that the bonding and/or symmetry properties in the octahedral and tetrahedral sheets changes as Fe(III) reduces to Fe(II). Upon reoxidation, peak positions and intensities of the reduced smectites were largely restored to the unaltered condition with some minor exceptions. These observations are interpreted to mean that bacterial reduction of Fe modifies the crystal structures of Fe-bearing smectites, but the overall effects are modest and of about the same extent as dithionite at similar levels of reduction. No extensive changes in clay structure were observed under conditions present in our model system.

The hot spring water discharging from a flank of an active volcano is precipitating unique monomineralic manganese deposits over volcanic terrain. The major and trace element chemistry, XRD mineralogy, DTA, and SEM observations indicate that the deposits consist of 10 Å phyllomanganate (buserite) accommodating inter-layer Ca and Mg with negligible amounts of detrital minerals. Other metallic elements can be accommodated by buserite, but concentrations are negligible ranging less than 10 ppm to 500 ppm. Abundance and pattern of REE (less than 100 ppm in total) are similar to those from hydrothermal manganese deposits. The buserite is enriched in Ca and Mg but depleted in Na in comparison with those in the spring water. The distribution coefficients for Ca, Mg and Na between the buserite and the host water were calculated assuming an ion-exchange equilibrium in the Yuno-Taki Fails, which proved applicable to other manganese deposits from surficial environments on land and oceans.

The sintering of montmorillonites pillared by hydroxy-Al species was investigated by several techniques. The change of the microporosity of the pillared interlayer clay with temperature shows that sintering was mainly due to the loss of microporosity. On calcination of the parent clay at 760°C, the X-ray powder diffraction pattern did not change; the 060 line shifted only slightly from 8.988 to 9.017 Å. The infrared (IR) spectrum suggested some dehydroxylation, but the structure appears to have been preserved. On calcination of the pillared clay at >700°C, the intensity of the 001 line decreased steadily, the 060 line broadened, and the b parameter decreased slightly from 8.988 to 8.928 Å. Fe3+ ions apparently occupied only one site after calcination at 300°C and two sites after calcination at 700°C. Smaller isomer shifts and higher quadrupole splittings in the Mössbauer spectra suggest that calcination produced more covalent bonding of Fe3+ and a highly distorted structure. The IR spectrum was significantly modified by calcination of the sample, and the 935- and 1125-cm−1 bands disappeared and the 1035-cm−1 band broadened. These results suggest that at <700°C the pillars sintered and that the clay progressively decomposed at >750°C. The pillaring-induced decrease of thermal stability of the clay was likely due to the introduction of protons during the first step of the preparation. The thermal stability of these Al-pillared interlayer complexes is comparable to that reported for hydroxy-silicoaluminum montmorillonites and fluorhectorites.

An overlap of bands produced by the O−H stretching vibrations of H2O (O–Hw) and structural OH (O−Hs) in smectite hampers the study by infrared spectroscopy (IR) of both their layer and interlayer structure. The present study re-evaluated the D2O saturation of smectite as a tool to enable separation of the overlapping bands at ambient conditions. Real-time monitoring by Attenuated Total Reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) was employed during in situ sample drying and H2O or D2O saturation at ambient temperature. Six dioctahedral and one trioctahedral pure smectites in Ca2+-, Na+-, and Cs+-cationic forms were studied to explore variability in total layer charge, charge location, and interlayer cation. The IR data showed the interlayer O−Dw signature at 2700–2200 cm−1 as a proxy for the O−Hw signature in the 3700–3000 cm−1 region. In addition to the expected liquid-like bands of D2O in the interlayer, these O−Dw spectra exhibited an additional sharp stretching feature in the 2695–2680 cm−1 range. No significant cation dependence of the sharp band position was observed between pairs of Ca- and Na-smectites for relative humidity (RH) between 60 and 80%, despite the large difference in the ionic potential between these interlayer cations. The intensity of the sharp band was found to be almost insensitive to changes in water content within the range 60–80% RH. The sharp band frequency decreased linearly with increasing total charge of the 2:1 layer (and can be used as a proxy for it), but no effect of charge location could be discerned. In agreement with early studies, this band was attributed to D2O located on the surface of the interlayer, pointing one O−D group toward the siloxane surface. Based on its high frequency, this band was indicative of free O−D oscillators, with very little or no involvement in hydrogen bonding (“dangling OD”). By analogy to the spectra of D2O-smectites, the spectrum of H2O-smectites also involves a sharp O−Hw analog at ~3630 cm−1 overlapping with typical OHs bands (e.g. Al2OH). As a result of this overlap, the sharp 3630 cm−1 O−Hw contribution was often missed or attributed solely to O−Hs.

Sequential cation-exchange capacity (CEC) measurements were obtained from standard clays using a mechanized, variable-rate leaching device. The device consists of a motorized screwjack and as many as 24 leaching tubes coupled to 60-ml plastic syringes. Controlled withdrawal of the syringe plungers produces a vacuum that permits samples in the leaching tubes to be extracted at a uniform rate. A single, 8-hr leaching of clays with 35 ml of salt solution was found to be comparable to multiple saturations or displacements using a centrifuge. CECs consistent with published values were obtained for reference 2:1 clay minerals using both acetate and chloride salts of Na, Ca, and Mg. Potassium-exchange capacities were also successfully measured following in situ thermal treatment of samples in the leaching tubes. Variations in measured CECs for kaolin-group minerals due to salt intercalation were minimized by using chloride rather than acetate salts and by washing with a dilute aqueous solution of the saturating cation following initial saturation. The mechanical extractor significantly reduced the effort required to perform conventional CEC determinations without sacrificing analytical precision.

The crystal chemistry of Fe-Si scales deposited from geothermal brines at Salton Sea, California, was studied by powder X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic techniques including infrared, 57Fe Mössbauer, 27Al and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Fe and Si K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Scales precipitated at near 250°C from dissolved ferrous iron and silicic acid are composed of hisingerite. This phase is shown to possess the same local structure as nontronite and is a poorly-crystallized precursor of the ferric smectite. A clear distinction can be made at the local scale between hisingerite and 2-line ferrihydrite because, even in their most disordered states, the former possesses a two-dimensional and the latter a three-dimensional anionic framework. At temperature near 100°C Fe-Si scales are a mix of Al-containing opal and hydrous ferrous silicate, whose local structure resembles minnesotaite and greenalite. This hydrous ferrous silicate is very well ordered at the local scale with an average Fe coordination about Fe atoms of 6 ± 1. The difference in crystallinity between the ferrous and ferric silicate scales was related to variations of growth rates of clay particles precipitated from ferrous and ferric salt solutions. The low crystallinity of the ferric smectite suggests that the oxidation of ferrous iron occurs before polymerization with silica.

Acrylamide has been polymerized between the layers of kaolinite by heat treatment. Acrylamide monomer was first intercalated by the displacement reaction between a kaolinite-N-methylformamide (NMF) intercalation compound and a 10% acrylamide aqueous solution. The resulting intercalation compound showed a basal spacing of 11.3 Å. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with cross polarization and magic angle spinning (13C CP/MAS-NMR) indicated the replacement of NMF by acrylamide. IR spectroscopy also showed the formation of hydrogen bonds with the hydroxyls of kaolinite. When the kaolinite-acrylamide intercalation compound was heated at 300°C for 1 hr, the basal spacing increased to 11.4 Å, and IR and 13C CP/MAS-NMR showed the disappearance of C=C bonds, indicating the polymerization of acrylamide. The heat-treated kaolinite-acrylamide intercalation compound was resistant to 30 min-washing with water, whereas the untreated kaolinite-acrylamide intercalation compound collapsed after the same treatment, an observation consistent with acrylamide polymerization between the layers of kaolinite. IR spectroscopy revealed that polyacrylamide was hydrogen bonded to kaolinite, but in a manner different from the hydrogen bonding of acrylamide.

Vernadite (MnO2·nH2O) is a mineral with a poorly ordered structure. Its synthetic analogue is designated δ-MnO2. Birnessite and vernadite are independent mineral species and cannot be described further under the same name. They have similar hexagonal unit-cell parameters, a0, but different c0 parameters. Rancieite has a structure similar to that of birnessite. Calcium bearing, 14-Å birnessite occurring in nature was first described by the authors. In addition to the todorokite having the parameters a0 = 9.75 Å, b0 = 2.84 Å, and c0 = 9.59 Å, other species of natural todorokite are known having a0 parameters that are multiples of 4.88 Å equal to 14.6 and 24.40 Å, the b0 and c0 parameters being the same.
