Two clay minerals, a dioctahedral, Na-montmorillonite from Wyoming and a trioctahedral, synthetic Na-laponite, were exchanged by cupric (Cu(II)) ions and subsequently heated at 100 °C intervals up to 500 °C. The resulting materials were analyzed by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), cation exchange capacity (CEC) measurements, combined thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Montmorillonite exhibits a well-known Hoffmann-Klemen effect in that, when heated, cupric (Cu) ions migrate into the lacunae of the octahedral sheet, where they compensate the negative charge deficit of the clay layer. In the case of laponite, CEC measurements and spectroscopic measurements reveal that Cu ions migrate into the octahedral sheet where they replace Li and Mg ions. After heating at 200 °C, approximately half the interlayer Cu ions are exchanged. The exchange appears to be 1 Cu for 1 Li, resulting in a slight decrease of the negative charge of the layer. After heating at 300 °C, the remaining Cu ions are exchanged by either 1 Mg or 2 Li, which does not result in any further charge reduction. At 400 °C, some of the extracted Mg remigrates into the structure and exchanges some Li (1 Mg for 2 Li). The final product at 400 or 500 °C is then a Li-laponite with Cu(II) in the octahedral sheet.

Bentonite, biotite, illite, kaolin, vermiculite and zeolite were treated with 0.1, 1.0 and 5.0 mol. dm−3 HCl or NaOH. Suspensions of Na homoionic forms of the initial and the treated minerals were back titrated with 0.1 mol. dm−3 NaOH. From back-titration data variable surface charge, QV, vs. pH dependencies and apparent surface dissociation constant distribution functions were estimated. Variable charge vs. pH curves were scaled against cation exchange capacity at pH 7.2 to obtain actual charge, QA, vs. pH plots. In general both treatments led to an increase of QV, while the QA value increased and decreased depending on the mineral and the treatment. Products of 5 mol dm−3 NaOH action on zeolite and of 1 and 5 mol. dm−3 NaOH on kaolin apparently developed a positive surface charge below pH ∼3.7 and below ∼4.3, respectively.

The heterogeneity of charge-generating surface groups was observed in natural minerals. During acid treatment, the number of weakly-acidic surface functional groups increased while the number of groups of stronger acidic character decreased. The opposite was found for alkaline treatment: the number of surface groups of intermediate acidity increased and that of low acidity decreased.

A soil of Attica (Greece) has been studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements in order to ascertain the nature and form of iron oxides present in it. The room temperature spectra consist of a paramagnetic doublet and a small magnetic sextet. At liquid nitrogen temperature the magnetic component increases considerably at the cost of the paramagnetic component. This behavior is typical of superparamagnetism exhibited by ultrafine magnetic particles. From the values of hyperfine parameters extracted by computer fits of the spectra, the particles can be identified mainly as α-Fe2O3. The theory of superparamagnetism, in conjunction with Mössbauer and magnetization data, is discussed in detail. Application of this theory to the data for the clay fraction of the soil leads to the conclusion that the oxide particles have a size distribution with a mean particle diameter of 131 Å and a width of 14 Å.

A theoretical model describing the interaction between crystalline swelling and cation exchange selectivity is proposed for expanding 2:1 phyllosilicates. The model is based on the assumption that changes in basal spacing of a clay are phase changes, and that each phase of a clay has a different selectivity constant for a particular cation exchange reaction. Energy barriers stabilize the various phases over a limited range of interlayer ionic composition. These energy barriers cause hysteresis in crystalline swelling, which in turn causes hysteresis in cation exchange. Results are presented for an experiment involving Ba-Mg exchange on a synthetic fiuoro-hectorite. The results demonstrate key aspects of the proposed model, including a correlation between measured selectivity coefficients and basal spacings (R2 = 0.85), an abrupt change in basal spacing that corresponds with an abrupt change in selectivity and corresponding hysteresis in crystalline swelling and cation exchange selectivity. The results also demonstrate increased selectivity for the preferred cation (Ba) at high solution mole fraction of the preferred cation. This trend is opposite of that observed for heterogeneous natural smectites but consistent with predictions of the model for a homogeneous smectite.

Ferrihydrite is a poorly crystalline Fe oxide of which 2-(XRD)line and 6-line varieties are commonly used in experiments, although species with intermediate numbers of peaks have been found in nature. To simulate nature, we synthesized two continuous series of ferrihydrites with between 2 and 6–7 peaks at room temperature in two different ways: (1) by varying the rate of hydrolysis of an Fe(NO3)3 solution (HR series); and (2) by oxidizing an FeCl2 solution containing up to 73 mmol Si/L (Si series), both at pH 7. Mössbauer spectra at 4.2 K showed that the ferrihydrites of the HR series had a constant magnetic hyperfine field (Bhf) at 4.2 K of 48.8 T whereas Bhf in the Si series dropped from 49.4 to 46.7 T as the Si content of the ferrihydrites increased from 0 to 74.7 g/kg of Si. Temperature scans between 4 and 170 K illustrate that the magnetic order breaks down at a temperature which is lower the higher the hydrolysis rate and the Si concentration in the ferrihydrite.

0.5 molal iron(III) chloride solutions were hydrolysed at room temperature by base additions in the range OH/Fe mole ratio 0–2.75. After an ageing period the hydrolysed solutions were used to produce amorphous hydroxide gels from which crystalline products were grown at 65°C, at low pH or high pH. Examination of crystal composition and morphology and comparison with similarly treated nitrate solutions showed that the nucleation of hematite and goethite is inhibited in chloride containing solutions, which allow growth of small rod shaped β-FeOOH to predominate or occur exclusively in gels at pH 1–2. The addition of seed crystals of hematite and goethite allows competitive growth of all three minerals. The transformations β-FeOOH → α-Fe2O3 and β-FeOOH → α-FeOOH at pH 1–2 proceed by dissolution and reprecipitation and are promoted by adding seed crystals.

A field-mapping and crystal-chemical study of two alunite- and halloysite-rich deposits in the Turplu area, situated northwest of Balıkesir on the Biga Peninsula of northwest Turkey reveals a mineralogically diverse and a potentially economic clay deposit. The mineral assemblage along fault zones is dominated by halloysite and sometimes alunite. The alunite is nearly end-member in composition (a = 6.995 Å, c = 17.195 Å) often occurring with a minor Ca phosphate phase. Of the two deposits studied, the more northerly mine contains more alunite relative to halloysite. Geochemical alteration indices suggest that the northern mine has experienced a slightly greater degree of hydrothermal modification. Halloysite is found in both hydrated and dehydrated states and assumes a tubular morphology. Observations by transmission and scanning electron microscopy are consistent with a model of halloysite dehydration, where the shapes transform from an open-hole tubular morphology to a closed-hole unfurled morphology.

Mineral paragenesis includes the effects of initial deposition of volcanic tuffs and andesite on top of karstic terrain. The contact between altered volcanics and underlying limestones is irregular and appears to have provided a mechanism to flush both hydrothermal and meteoric waters through the volcanics. Periods of hydrothermal alteration (hypogene) contemporaneous with extensional and strike-slip faulting have resulted in alunite and halloysite deposits. Hydrothermal alteration is concentrated near the fault zones. Because of subsequent weathering (supergene) away from the fault zones, much of the andesitic volcanic rocks have been altered to a more smectite-rich and kaolinite-bearing assemblage. The deposits continue to be both plastically deformed in the alunite/halloysite regions and to undergo brittle deformation in the saprolitized volcanics. Tectonic deformation has mixed the contacts, such that limestone blocks are entrained into parts of the alteration zones. Gibbsite and gypsum are common weathering products associated with limestone block inclusions. Genetic models for the origins of alunite-halloysite deposits in NW Turkey should consider as possible influencing factors the underlying lithologies, the extent of hydrothermal alteration, and recent weathering by meteoric fluids. In the case of the Turplu deposits, karstic limestones, hydrothermal circulation of sulfate-rich waters, and a post-alteration history of meteoric weathering were all important factors in their formation.

The nature of component layers of mixed-layer illite-smectite and their possible evolution in the course of illitization have been debated since the 1960s. The present study is a new attempt to solve these problems, using samples collected from diverse geological formations around the world. Twenty three purified illite-smectites from bentonites and hydrothermal rocks, covering the complete range of expandability, were analyzed chemically, including ${\text{NH}}_4^{+}$\$\end{document} determination, and their structural formulae were calculated. Analysis of these relations and independent measurements of the total specific surface area (TSSA) indicate that the layer charges of both types do not change in the course of illitization. The smectite layer charge is equal to 0.41 and the illite layer charge is equal to 0.95 per O10(OH)2. N and fs can be used to calculate TSSA, and all three parameters can also be calculated from cation exchange capacity and from X-ray diffraction peak positions, utilizing the regressions established here.

A new method is proposed for applying the chlorite geothermometer using X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. A linear correlation has been found between the (001) basal spacing of chlorite and its “crystallization” temperature. The basal spacing values were corrected for an increase of Al(IV) with Fe enrichment (Fe/Fe + Mg), when the Fe(II) value of chlorite is >2.6 in the formula unit. The regression coefficient of the best fit is r = 0.95. Only 2 Bragg lines need to be measured for application of the proposed technique: the (001) and (060) X-ray spacing. The proposed method is applied to 19 chlorite samples from 4 different geothermal fields. The temperatures of chlorite formation obtained with the present method and those calculated by the expressions formulated by Cathelineau (1988) and Kranidiotis and MacLean (1987) are presented. The method's validity was also tested on geothermal chlorites from the literature, and the results show good agreement with previous experimental trials.

The ability of a high surface-area gibbsite to adsorb Cu2+ was studied using a Cu2+ ion-selective electrode, electron spin resonance, infrared spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. The gibbsite chemi-sorbed small amounts of monomelic Cu2+ (<0.5 mmole/100 g) which was oriented with its z-axis perpendicular to the (001) plane of the mineral. The proposed chemisorption sites are at gibbsite crystal “steps” observed by electron microscopy. Although Cu2+ adsorption on gibbsite as a function of pH was largely reversible, exposure of the chemisorbed Cu2+ to NH3 did not result in desorption from the surface despite the displacement of several OH− or H2O ligands by NH3. The results indicate that at least one Cu-O-Al bond is formed in the process of chemisorption.

At pH > 5, the gibbsite appeared to promote the hydrolysis and polymerization of Cu2+, with further adsorption at the surfaces. Infrared spectroscopy revealed no effect of the adsorption on the (001) surface hydroxyl groups, although the anisotropic diffusion of protons in the gibbsite structure was verified from deuteration studies.

Vermiculite, mixed-layer vermiculite-phlogopite, and smectite are presently forming from igneous and metamorphic bedrock in the alpine zone of the northern Cascades, Washington. In addition, south-facing exposures of quartz-diorites and metadiorites above snow line are weathering to ferruginous bauxite. Calculations indicate that vermiculite is presently forming from phlogopite schists in this environment at a unit area rate that is approximately six times the average estimated rate of clay erosion for North America. The mineralogical data indicate that chemical weathering in this region is a quantitatively significant process, and suggest that in the development of current geomorphic concepts researchers may have generally underestimated the importance of chemical weathering in alpine environments.

Using a simple ionic model, the energy necessary to expand a layer structure by a certain distance can be calculated. This has been done for a series of 15 structures including hydroxides, 2:1 and 1:1 structures of various types. Plots of energy versus separation distance show three major groups which have common bonding properties. For large separations, the group with the strongest interlayer bonds contains the brittle micas, the hydroxides, and the 1:1 structures. Intermediate bonding structures are the normal micas and the weakest bonds occur in the zero layer charge 2:1 structures. The relative energies needed for a given separation are not constant so that for small separations the zero layer charge structures such as talc and pyrophyllite are more strongly bonded than the normal micas. These groupings correlate very well with the expandability of the structures by water and other substances. It is proposed that this approach to the study of the layer structures will provide a simple theory explaining the expansion properties of layer silicates.

The frequency distribution or relative abundance of minerals in soils varies with the five principal classes of factors that govern soil formation. The characteristics of the minerals of the parent material, the time factor, climatic factors, relief factors and biotic factors each can be shown to have important independent effects on clay mineralogy of soils under proper circumstances. The soil parent material exerts a control over the frequency distribution of minerals in soils by introduction of the clay minerals into the soil directly, by controlling the course of chemical weathering in the soil through the relative susceptibility of its minerals to weathering, by furnishing abundant divalent metallic cations, by impediment of drainage, or by acceleration of leaching when highly permeable. The time factor is conspicuous as long times give an advanced degree of weathering even in temperate climates. Climate is important, since highly weathered materials inevitably occur as a result of intense leaching in warm tropical and equatorial climates. Relief is important in concentrating leaching water and metallic cations, in affecting oxidation or reduction. The biotic factor affects minerals conspicuously where an A0 horizon develops and resulting cheluviation moves R2O3 out of the A2 horizon.

Inherited minerals such as illite, quartz, feldspars, ferro-magnesian minerals, carbonates and gypsum are most abundant in clays of little-weathered parent materials and soils of the zonal Desert, Brown, Chestnut and Tundra soils as well as intrazonal Mountain groups and azonal Regosols and Lithosols. Secondary layer silicate minerals such as vermiculite, secondary chlorite, montmorillonite, kaolinite and halloysite are most abundant in clays of moderately weathered parent materials and soils of the zonal Chernozem, Prairie, Gray—Brown Podzolic, Podzol, Red—Yellow Podzolic, and Low Humic Latosol groups as well as intrazonal Planosol, Rendzina, Dark Magnesium soil, and Wiesenboden groups. Secondary sesquioxide minerals such as hematite, goethite, allophane, gibbsite and anatase and residual resistant primary minerals such as ilmenite and magnetite predominate in the more highly weathered parent materials and soils of the zonal Ferruginous Humic Latosols, Hydrol Humic Latosols, Latosolic Brown, and Ando soils and Laterites, as well as the intrazonal Tropical Savannah and Ground Water Podzol ortstein soils.

The effects of chemical reduction of structural Fe3+ in nontronite SWa-1 (ferruginous smectite) on intervalence electron transfer (IT) and magnetic exchange were investigated. Visible absorption spectra in the region 800-400 nm of a chemical reduction series of the SWa-1 nontronite revealed an IT band near 730 nm (13,700 cm−1). Both the intensity and position of this band were affected by the extent of Fe reduction. The intensity increased until the Fe2+ content approached 40% of the total Fe, then decreased slightly with more Fe2+. The position of the band also shifted to lower energy as the extent of reduction increased.

Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that the magnetic exchange in unaltered nontronite is frustrated antiferromagnetic, but ferromagnetic in reduced samples. Magnetic ordering temperatures are in the range 10–50 K, depending on the extent of reduction. The ferromagnetic component in the magnetization curve increased with increasing Fe2+ in the crystal structure. The positive paramagnetic interaction likely is due to electron charge transfer from Fe2+ to Fe3+ through such structural linkages as Fe2+-O-Fe3+ (perhaps following a double exchange mechanism), which is consistent with the visible absorption spectra.

The effects of reduction and reoxidation of octahedral Fe3+ on the exchange of structural hydrogen in nontronite were determined using tritium (3H) as a label element. The uptake of H from the surrounding solution of nontronite suspensions increased as the reduction of structural Fe3+ increased. Similarly, the loss of H from the structure increased as the reduction increased. The results are generally consistent with a reduction mechanism involving the loss of structural OH, leaving the affected Fe sites with less than six-fold coordination. The attenuation of increased negative charge on the clay layer, however, was less than predicted by such a mechanism.

During the reoxidation of reduced nontronite in suspension, about one-third of the H remaining as part of the structure following reduction was lost, whereas twice that amount of H was incorporated into the structure from the surrounding solution. A reoxidation mechanism is proposed whereby H2O from the surrounding solution is incorporated into the mineral structure followed by the elimination of a hydrogen ion, returning the Fe to six-fold coordination. This mechanism implies the reversibility of Fe reduction in nontronite.

The degree of preferred orientation of mineral grains in powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) samples prepared by standard techniques has been evaluated by means of a correction model implemented in the Rietveld program, BGMN. It is demonstrated that neither front- nor side-loading of mineral powders obtained by wet grinding in a McCrone micronizing mill yield powder mounts with randomly oriented particles. Despite fine grinding, the primary sizes and shapes of mineral grains contained in multi-phase samples influence the degree of preferred orientation in XRD powder mounts. Two minerals, both of platy habit, were found to show different degrees of preferred orientation in front- and side-loaded samples. In contrast to these methods of sample preparation, the spray-drying technique yielded perfect randomness of the particles. The experiments on artificial mineral mixtures demonstrate that the model applied can effectively correct for preferred orientation allowing reliable Rietveld quantitative phase analysis of moderately textured samples prepared by standard techniques.

To study the physico-chemical activity of lichens on micaceous components of granitic rocks, samples covered by thalli of Parmelia conspersa (Ehrht) Ach. and Aspicilia intermutans (Nyl.) Arn. were collected and examined with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) equipped with a Back Scattered Electron (BSE) detector and an Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) microanalytical system. The bio-physical activity of both lichen species leads to a deep alteration of biotite, which results in detachment, separation and exfoliation of biotite plates. Chemically, the bioweathering process of biotite in the lichenmineral contact zone involves considerable depletion of potassium (K) from interlayer positions in biotite and removal of several elements, corresponding to a 9.7% loss in matter. The sequence of the loss of elements is: K+ » Fetot > Ti4+ ≅ Mg2+. There are also some gains in the order: Ca2+ > Na+ » Al3+ > Si4+ attributed to dissolution of co-existing Ca and Na rich minerals. Geochemical mass balance results suggest the transformation of K-rich biotite to scarcely altered biotite interstratified with a biotite-vermiculite intermediate phase in the lichen bioweathered contact zones.

Diffuse reflectance spectra of kaolins have been recorded in samples from different environments. They show the systematic presence of Fe-oxides, even in bleached kaolins, with no contribution from the Fe3+ ions substituted in kaolinite. Second derivative spectra of various Fe-phases (hematite, goethite, lepidocrocite, maghemite, akaganeite, ferrihydrite and Fe-polymer) may be differentiated by the position of a diagnostic band corresponding to the 2(6A1) → 2(4T1(4G)) transition. The systematic comparison of diffuse reflectance spectra of unbleached and bleached kaolins has demonstrated the differences between the Fe-oxides occurring as coatings and as occluded phases. The features observed in second derivative spectral curves are consistent with assignments of crystal field transitions to goethite, hematite, akaganeite, and aged hydrous ferric oxides. The optical determination of the Fe-phases associated to kaolins assists in the interpretation of the formation conditions of these minerals.

High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) has been used to examine illite/smectite from the Mancos Shale; rectorite from Garland County, Arkansas; illite from Silver Hill, Montana; Na-smectite from Crook County, Wyoming; corrensite from Packwood, Washington; and diagenetic chlorite from the Tuscaloosa Formation. Thin specimens were prepared by ion milling, ultramicrotome sectioning, and/or grain dispersal on a holey carbon substrate. Some smectite-bearing clays were also examined after intercalation with dodecylamine hydrochloride (DH). Intercalation of smectite with DH proved to be a reliable method for HRTEM imaging of expanded smectite (d (001) = 16 Å) which could then be distinguished from unexpanded illite (d (001) = 10 Å). Lattice fringes of basal spacings of DH-intercalated rectorite and illite/smectite showed a 26-Å periodicity. These data support X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) studies which suggest that these samples are ordered, interstratified varieties of illite and smectite. The ion-thinned, unexpanded corrensite sample showed discrete crystallites containing 10-Å and 14-Å basal spacings corresponding to collapsed smectite and chlorite, respectively. Regions containing disordered layers of chlorite and smectite were also noted. Crystallites containing regular alternations of smectite and chlorite layers were not common. These HRTEM observations of corrensite did not corroborate XRD data. Particle sizes parallel to the c axis ranged widely for each sample studied, and many particles showed basal dimensions equivalent to more than five layers. For all illite, smectite, and illite/ smectite particles examined, crystallite sizes of about 20 Å in the basal dimension were not observed.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) of powdered materials is one of the most common methods used for structural characterization as well as for the quantification of mineral contents in mixtures. The application of the Rietveld method for that purpose requires structure models for each phase. The recursive calculation of structure factors was applied here to the Rietveld refinement of XRD powder patterns of illite-smectite (I-S) minerals. This approach allowed implementation of stacking disorder in structural models. Models for disordered stacking of cis-vacant and trans-vacant dioctahedral 2:1 layers as well as rotational disorder were combined with models for mixed layering of illitic and smectitic layers.

The DIFFaX code was used to simulate non-basal (hk) reflections of illites with different degrees of disorder. Rietveld refinements of these simulated patterns were used to evaluate the application of this new approach. A model describing rotational disorder (n·120° and n·60° rotations) and mixed layering of cis-vacant and trans-vacant dioctahedral layers was tested. Different starting parameters led to identical results within the ranges of standard deviations and confirmed the stability of the automatic refinement procedure. The influence on the refinement result of an incorrect choice of fixed parameters was demonstrated.

The hk model was combined with models describing the basal reflections of disordered I-S and tested on measured data. A glauconitic mineral (Urkut, Hungary), an ordered I-S (ISCz-1, a special clay in the Source Clays Repository of The Clay Minerals Society), and a dioctahedral I-S (F4, Füzérradvány, Hungary) were used as test substances. Parameters describing the mixed layering of illitic and smectitic layers were compared with the results from refinements of oriented mounts and showed good agreement. A pattern of a physical mixture of an I-S mineral and a turbostratically disordered smectite was analyzed in order to test the new approach for application in quantitative phase analysis. The quantitative Rietveld phase analysis results were found to be satisfactory.
