The phenomenon of swelling is associated with the hydration of clay; however, all clays do not swell when hydrated. Steps in the mechanism of hydration and swelling of different types of clays as observed and interpreted by several investigators and some theories proposed as to the cause of hydration and swelling are reviewed.

The concept of clays as colloidal electrolytes that dissociate to a greater or less extent when dispersed in water seems to explain most satisfactorily the significant relation between the degree of swelling on hydration and the composition of the clay minerals. In the kaolinite group, in which there are generally no replacements, the small number of exchangeable cations associated with the clay structure are presumed to be held by broken bonds on the edges of the sheets. Even though kaolinite, as shown by Marshall, is more highly ionized than montmorillonite, this greater ionization, because of the small number of cations present and their location on the edges of the sheets, cannot pry the units apart or leave the sheets sufficiently charged to cause the mineral to exhibit the phenomenon of swelling.

In the montmorillonite structure, on the other hand, isomorphous replacements, most commonly of magnesium and ferrous iron for aluminum in the octahedral layer, and, to a slight degree, replacement of aluminum for silicon in the tetrahedral layer, give the structure a net residual charge of 0.7 to 1.10 milliequivalents, which is neutralized by cations held electrostatically and located, for the most part, between the sheets. On hydration such a structure tends to ionize, the degree of ionization depending on (a) the nature of the exchangeable cation and (b) the kind and extent of isomorphous replacements. The characteristically great swelling of sodium montmorillonite as compared with calcium montmorillonite can be correlated with its much greater ionization. The differences in swelling of different montmorillonites have been correlated with the nature and extent of octahedral substitution and are attributed to the effect of these replacements on the anionic strength of the structural unit and its consequent degree of ionization as influenced by the changes in polarization throughout the structure caused by these replacements.

Hydrous mica, with the same structure as montmorillonite, is characterized by even a greater degree of isomorphous replacements and, consequently, a greater charge. However, a large part of this charge is neutralized by fixed, nonexchangeable and nonionizable potassium, and ionization of the exchangeable cations is unable to overcome the effect of this fixed potassium. It is probable that the greater replacements in the hydrous mica structure, as in the montmorillonite structure, have a depressing effect on ionization. The result is that hydrous micas are characterized by a very low degree of swelling.

The colloidal state (stable, coagulated, or gel-like) and the rheological properties of Na-rich montmorillonite (Wyoming) dispersions are strongly influenced by organic cations. This effect is shown for homologous organic cations: alkyl trimethylammonium ions, paraquat, diquat, alkyl bispyridinium ions, and the triphenylmethane dyes crystal violet, methyl green, and tris (tri-methylammonium phenyl) methane chloride. The critical coagulation concentrations, cK, are small (often < 1 mmol/L) because the cations are enriched in the Stern layer and influence the solvent structure near the surface. The strong adsorption of the counterions at the clay-mineral surface causes cK values to increase with the solid content. Charge reversal (recharging) of the particles was observed with the longer chain alkyl trimethyl-ammonium ions, dodecyl bispyridinium ions, and crystal violet. Other cations reduced the electrophoretic mobility to zero but positive particle charges were not observed.

The plastic viscosity increased sharply at the critical coagulation concentration and showed a minimum slightly below cK, which was caused by the electroviscous effect. Yield values were developed at concentrations above cK. In most cases, yield values reached a plateau where the amount of organic cations was ∼0.5 mmol/g, i.e., about half of the cation-exchange capacity. The cK values decreased with increasing hydrophobicity of homologous compounds, but the yield value showed maxima at intermediate chain lengths. The yield value of several 0.5% dispersions was high, e.g., dodecyl trimethylammonium ions, 71 Pa; paraquat, 100 Pa; diquat, 42 Pa; hexyl bispyridinium ions, 53 Pa (vs. Ca2+, 0.2 Pa; Al3+, 0.7 Pa). The storage modulus as a function of the number of organic cations changed in a similar way as the yield value, and high values were observed (e.g., dodecyl trimethylammonium ions, hexyl bispyridinium ions: 1000 Pa, paraquat: >4000 Pa). Thus, dispersions with high viscosity, yield value, and pronounced viscoelasticity are obtained by coagulating Na-rich montmorillonite dispersions with organic cations.

A montmorillonite exchanged with large hydroxy-Al cations was thermally treated to convert the hydroxy cations to oxide pillars and to generate permanent microporosity in the interlayers. The pillared clay products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and water-sorption measurements to delineate the effect of aging of the pillaring solutions, the methods of drying and concentration of clay-water suspensions, and the temperatures of calcination on micropore volumes. Although samples prepared at different conditions gave d(001) reflections of 17–17.5 Å, at least to 500°C, the concentrations of clay-water suspensions and the temperatures of calcination significantly changed the pore-size distribution and the volume of micropores present in the sample, as calculated from the water-sorption isotherms. A narrow pore-size distribution having little or no macroporosity or external surface condensation was observed in samples prepared by the addition of the pillaring solution directly to the clay (solid) without first making a clay-water suspension and calcining the sample at ≥400°C. About 87% of the total volume was found to be micropores of ≤14–17 Å in the sample calcined at 600°C. Aging the pillaring solution, however, did not influence either the water-sorption isotherms or the XRD patterns significantly under the conditions specified. Essentially the same results were obtained for samples prepared from both hydroxy-Al polymer (OH/Al = 2) and aluminum chlorohydrol (ACH) solutions.

Although alumina-pillared clays exhibited an extreme type-I isotherm (Langmuir type) for nitrogen adsorption, the sorption of water vapor gave an isotherm of unusual shape that fit neither a BET nor a Langmuir equation. This latter behavior has previously been attributed to a unique pore size and hydrophobicity and is apparently common to all pillared montmorillonite materials. The hydrophobicity of the pillared clay apparently developed on calcination by the migration of protons from the interlayers to the octahedral sheets, in which sites of cationic substitution (negative charge) were located. Protons migrated back to the interlayers by treatment with NH3, which subsequently converted to NH4+ in the interlayers. The exchange of the NH4+ by Ca2+ introduced hydrophilicity to the alumina-pillared clay, which was reflected both in the shape of the water isotherm (close to moderate Brunauer type I), the heat of sorption, and the total sorption capacity.

Thermogravimetric analysis combined with mass spectrometry was used to study H2O bound to samples of illite-1M, illite-2M2 and leucophyllite-1M. Samples were heated in a helium atmosphere at different temperatures and after heating at each given temperature were cooled to 35°C. Each cycle in the mass 18 spectrum of each illite sample contains a low-temperature peak at 60–80°C, a medium-temperature peak at 340–360°C, and a high-temperature peak at a temperature that is very close to the maximum temperature of sample heating of a given cycle. Within each heating-cooling cycle, the sample weight at the beginning of cooling is lower than that at the end of the same cooling stage because of H2O resorption. However, the number of H2O molecules released during each medium-temperature heating cycle is equal to the number of H2O molecules resorbed during the corresponding cooling stages.

The weight losses, under medium-temperature heating, of the illite samples are related to dehydration when H2O molecules located in K-free sites of the illite interlayers are removed. The medium-temperature peak is reproducible for each cycle because during each cooling stage the illite interlayers resorb the same number of H2O molecules that were lost during the preceding dehydration.

Two distinct features are characteristic of leucophyllite during heating-cooling treatments. First, the number of H2O molecules resorbed during cooling is significantly greater than the number of H2O molecules lost during dehydration. Second, the medium-temperature peaks in the spectrum appear only in the last five cycles and the maximum-peak temperature is 450–460°C. These data indicate that the heating-cooling treatments are accompanied by partial rehydroxylation. This rehydroxylation occurs during each coolingstage when a small number of resorbed H2O molecules are trapped in the interlayers, although most migrate into the octahedral sheet of the 2:1 layers and reform as OH groups. The crystal chemical factors responsible for the dehydration and rehydration as well as for the rehydroxylation reactions are discussed and speculation about the origin of the low- and medium-temperature H2O losses is presented.

The swelling property of smectite is dominated by the hydration of exchangeable cations in the interlayer spacing (‘interlayer hydration’). By investigating systematically the swelling behavior of various exchangeable cations with different valences and ionic radii, the interlayer hydration of smectite was explored. The swelling behavior of Li+-, K+-, Rb+-, Cs+-, Mg2+-, Sr2+-, Ba2+-, and La3+- montmorillonites in undersaturated conditions was measured precisely over the range 50–150°C by in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The systematic swelling behavior of ten homocationic montmorillonites, the aforementioned eight homoionic montmorillonites, plus Na+ and Ca2+ from a previous study, and the cation hydration energies were analysed by studying the changes occurring in the basal spacing and the 001 peak width. With decreasing cation hydration energy, swelling curves (i.e. plots of basal spacing vs. relative humidity (RH)) change from continuous (Mg2+, La3+, and Ca2+) to stepwise (Sr2+, Li+, Ba2+, and Na+) to one-layer only (K+, Rb+, and Cs+). For the first two groups, the RH at the midpoint between the one- and two-layer hydration states increased as the cation hydration energy decreased. Under low RH, with increasing temperature, the basal spacings of Mg-, La-, Ca-, Sr-, Li-, and Ba-montmorillonites decreased continuously to the zero-layer hydration state, whereas Na-, K-, Rb-, and Cs-montmorillonites swelled from the zero-layer hydration state even at the lowest temperature (50°C). A decrease in the basal spacing at the same RH but at different temperatures suggests the existence of metastable states or that the layer-stacking structure changes with temperature. The systematics of the swelling behavior of various homocationic montmorillonites as functions of RH and temperature (<150°C) at 1 atmare reported here.

The surface microtopography of hematite over the course of dissolution in oxalic and citric acids was examined by in-situ and ex-situ atomic-force microscopy. In-situ imaging of the basal-plane surface of a centimeter-scale natural hematite sample immersed in 2 mM citric acid demonstrated that the basal-plane surface was relatively unreactive; rather, dissolution occurred along step edges and via etch-pit formation. Ex-situ imaging of synthetic hematite particles following batch dissolution in 1 mM oxalic acid showed similar dissolution features on basal-plane surfaces; in addition, etching along particle edges was apparent. The presence of etch features is consistent with a surface-controlled dissolution reaction. The results are in agreement with previous investigations suggesting that the basal-plane surface is relatively unreactive with respect to ligand exchange. Both in-situ and ex-situ imaging of particle surfaces can provide valuable information on the roles of surface structures and microtopographic features in mineral dissolution.

Solutions containing AlCl3 and Si(OH)4 (concentrations ≤ 1.5 mM with molar Si:Al ratios of 1:2, 1:1 and 3:1) and FeCl2 (0, 0.5 and 1.0 mM) were adjusted to pH 8 with Ca(OH)2, and incubated at 23°C and 89°C without exclusion of air in the presence of CaCO3 for 8–12 weeks. The products were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Systems with 3:1 and 1:1 Si:Al ratios without Fe gave hydrous feldspathoids at 23° and 89°C. Systems with 3:1 Si:Al ratios containing Fe gave aluminous nontronites at 89°C and noncrystalline, nontronite-like products at 23°C. Systems with 1:1 Si:Al ratios with added Fe gave Fe(III)-substituted hydrous feldspathoids at 23°C. At 89°C, the system with 1:1 Si:Al ratios and 0.5 mM Fe produced a “protohalloysite,” while that with 1.0 mM Fe gave a poorly ordered nontronite-like layer silicate. In systems with 1:2 Si:Al ratios, the formation of “protoimogolite” at 23°C was little affected by additions of Fe. At 89°C, the “protoimogolite” decomposed to boehmite and poorly-ordered layer silicate phases. Inclusion of 1 mM MgCl2 in the above systems had no effect on the products at 23°C, but at 89°C produced saponites and a mixed layer saponite-chlorite in the 3:1 Si:Al systems, and saponite-like layer structures in the 1:1 and 1:2 Si:Al systems.

High-resolution transmission electron microscope images of dioctahedral mixed-layer clay structures (illite/smectite) having various substitutional and polytypic schemes were modeled using computer simulation methods. Both one- and two-dimensional calculations were performed using parameters characteristic of a typical range of imaging conditions. One-dimensional images formed by imaging only 00/ diffractions show three important results: (1) The 20-Å periodicity resulting from rigorously ordered R1 illite/smectite can be imaged, but unconventional focus conditions may be necessary. (2) For crystals oriented with the electron beam perfectly parallel to the layers, the brightest fringes in the image correspond to either the octahedral sheets or the interlayer sites, depending on focus conditions. Misorientation of the crystal, however, by only 1° or 2° shifts the positions of the fringes by 1 to 3 Å. Furthermore, in tilted specimens, some defocus values produce images suggesting that smectite layers have a 11–13-Å periodicity, despite the uniform 10-Å periodicity present in the model structure. Thus, direct correlations between image and structure generally should not be made. (3) Two-layer polytypes of pure illite or pure smectite can also produce images with a 20-Å periodicity.

Two-dimensional images additionally showed that the cross fringes produced by some hkl diffractions can be imaged. The simulations showed that these cross fringes ideally might permit the determination of both layer stacking and compositional periodicity, but the fringes are lost by misorientations of a few degrees. These image simulations demonstrated, therefore, that mixed layering of illite and smectite theoretically can be directly imaged by transmission electron microscopy of chemically untreated specimens, but ambiguities may exist in the detailed intepretation of the images.

The clay and bulk mineralogy of soil and till from 26 Adirondack watersheds was studied. The materials consist typically of quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, mica, vermiculite, and kaolinite. Talc, smectite, halloysite, and hornblende are present in some samples. The clay fraction of the soils is composed predominantly of vermiculite, likely derived from the transformation of a mica precursor, and kaolinite. The soil vermiculite commonly contains hydroxy-Al interlayers which are especially prevalent in the B-horizon samples. Despite significant variation in the type of bedrock and the composition of heavy mineral assemblages in these watersheds, the clay mineralogy is remarkably uniform. This finding supports earlier suggestions that the occurrence of vermiculite in soils is more dependent on climate than on the nature of the parent material.

Layered metal hydroxides exhibit non-uniform broadening of lines in their X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) patterns, which cannot always be explained on the basis of crystallite size effects. In the case of hexagonal solids such as nickel hydroxide, DIFFaX simulations of the XRPD patterns show that: (1) stacking faults and turbostratic disorder at low (<30%) incidence selectively broaden the h0l reflections; (2) turbostratic disorder at high (>40%) incidence causes asymmetric broadening of the hk0 reflections and a complete extinction of the hkl reflections while leaving 00l unchanged; (3) interstratification selectively broadens the non-hk0 reflections; and (4) cation vacancies reduce the relative intensity of the 100 reflection. In contrast, a reduction in the thickness of the crystallites along the stacking direction of the layers selectively broadens the 00l reflections while a reduction in the disc diameter causes the progressive broadening and extinction of the hk0 reflections. Comparison with experimental data shows that several kinds of disorders have to be invoked to account for the observed broadening. DIFFaX simulations enable the quantification of the different kinds of disorder.

The interactions of clay minerals with organic compounds which give rise to the formation of colored complexes, are discussed. The color reactions of clays can be ascribed to a charge transfer between the mineral and the adsorbed species. The active sites on the clay are aluminums exposed at crystal edges and/or transition metal cations in the higher valency state at planar surfaces both of which can act as electron acceptors. The pH of the system, the nature of the solvent and that of the exchangeable cation, influence the rate of color development and the final intensity and quality of the color produced. Steric factors also play a part in reactions involving bulky organics. Some practical applications based on color reactions of clays with electron-donating organic substances are described.

Smectite formation in alkaline-saline environments has been attributed to direct precipitation from solution and/or transformation from precursor minerals, but these mechanisms are not universally agreed upon in the literature. The objective of this work was to investigate the mineralogy of smectites in the soils surrounding a representative alkaline-saline lake of Nhecolândia, a sub-region of the Pantanal wetland, Brazil, and then to identify the mechanisms of their formation.

Soils were sampled along a toposequence and analyzed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Water was collected along a transect involving the studied toposequence and equilibrium diagrams were calculated using the databases PHREEQC and AQUA.

The fine-clay fraction is dominated by smectite, mica, and kaolinite. Smectites are concentrated at two places in the toposequence: an upper zone, which includes the soil horizons rarely reached by the lake-level variation; and a lower zone, which includes the surface horizon within the area of seasonal lake-level variation. Within the upper zone, the smectite is dioctahedral, rich in Al and Fe, and is classified as ferribeidellite. This phase is interstratified with mica and vermiculite and has an Fe content similar to that of the mica identified. These characteristics suggest that the ferribeidellite originates from transformation of micas and that vermiculite is an intermediate phase in this transformation. Within the lower zone, smectites are dominantly trioctahedral, Mg-rich, and are saponitic and stevensitic minerals. In addition, samples enriched in these minerals have much smaller rare-earth element (REE) contents than other soil samples. The water chemistry shows a geochemical control of Mg and saturation with respect to Mg-smectites in the more saline waters. The REE contents, water chemistry, and the presence of Mg-smectite where maximum evaporation is expected, suggest that saponitic and stevensitic minerals originate by chemical precipitation from the water column of the alkaline-saline lake.

Radium sorption efficiencies as a function of temperature, Ra concentration, and secondary mineral sorbate were determined in a 0.01 M NaCl solution. Radium sorption on a characterized clinoptilolite, montmorillonite, nontronite, opal, silica gel, illite, kaolinite, and glauconite under comparable experimental conditions allowed determination of Ra sorption efficiency curves for each, through use of Freundlich constants, over the same temperature and initial Ra solution concentration range. Similar sorption data for U on the same secondary minerals over the same temperatures allowed comparison of sorption efficiencies for Ra and U. Clinoptilolite, illite, and nontronite were the most efficient Ra sorbents, while opal and silica gel were the poorest Ra sorbents. Generally, Ra sorption on secondary minerals was much greater than U sorption under the same experimental conditions.

The nature of freshly-precipitated and aged hydrated ferric oxides prepared by the addition of ferric chloride to KOH was investigated by the use of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, i.r. absorption, and pH 3·0 ammonium oxalate extraction. The results show the fresh material to be essentially non-crystalline hydrated ferric oxide, which when aged at 60°C C and high pH rapidly crystallizes as goethite, without any indication of coexisting hematite. The various methods were evaluated as indices of crystallinity for aging materials. The acid ammonium oxalate method was shown to extract selectively only the non-crystalline portion of such mixtures. The use of X-ray diffraction analysis for estimating aging stage requires elimination of the preferred orientation of the goethite crystals. While both the oxalate and X-ray methods can detect as little as 2 per cent crystallinity, the oxalate method is probably superior for quantitative determinations as it depends directly on an inherent difference in the solubility of the crystalline and non-crystalline materials, rather than on a technique dependent intensity measurement. The use of the intensity of the O-H bending vibrations of the infrared absorption spectra can also potentially detect as little as 2 per cent crystallinity, but the procedure is probably less useful for quantitative determinations than the oxalate or X-ray methods because of the problem of evaluating the area under the peaks.

A model to compensate the 2:1 layer having excess negative charge owing to the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ by sodium dithionite buffered with citrate-bicarbonate in nontronite, beidellite, and montmorillonite is proposed. This model is based on reassessing published experimental data for Fe-containing smectites and on a recently published structural model for reduced Garfield nontronite. In the reduced state, Fe2+ cations remain six-fold coordinated, and increases of negative charge in the 2:1 layer are compensated by the sorption of Na+ and H+ from solution. Some of the incorporated protons react with structural OH groups to cause dehydroxylation. Also, some protons bond with undersaturated oxygen atoms of the octahedral sheet. The amount of Na+ (p) and H+ (ni) cations incorporated in the structure as a function of the amount of Fe reduction can be described quantitatively by two equations: p = m/(1 + K0mrel) and ni = K0mrel/(1 + K0mrel); with K0 = CEC (9.32 − 1.06mtot + 0.02mtot2), where mtot is the total Fe content in the smectite, m is the Fe2+ content, mrel is the reduction level (m/mtot), CEC is the cation-exchange capacity, and K0 is a constant specific to the smectite. The model can predict, from the chemical composition of a smectite, the modifications of its properties as a function of reduction level. Based on this model, the structural mechanism of Fe3+ reduction in montmorillonite differs from that determined in nontronite and beidellite owing to differences in the distribution of cations over trans- and cis-octahedral sites.

The sorption of U and Ra on finely ground biotite, muscovite, and phlogopite was adequately described by the Freundlich adsorption equation, (x/m) = KCn, at low U and Ra concentrations despite Ra precipitation at the higher temperature. Radium and U sorption-efficiency curves derived from the Freundlich constants generally showed decreased distribution coefficients in response to increasing temperature and increasing Ra or U concentrations. Temperatures investigated were 5°C, 25°C, and 65°C. Solution compositions used were 0.1 M NaCl and 0.01 M NaHCO, for U, and 0.01 M NaCl for Ra. Uranium initial solution concentrations ranged from 1.00 × 10−4 M to 4.00 × 10−7 M; the Ra initial solution concentration range was 6.80 × 10−7 M to 8.60 × 10−9 M.

In 0.01 M NaHCO3 solutions, anionic uranyl carbonate complexes were prevalent, and because they are weakly sorbed relative to free uranyl ion and uranyl hydroxy complexes, the result was a relatively low U sorption efficiency on biotite and phlogopite and excellent sorption efficiency on muscovite. Uranyl carbonate complexes decreased in solubility with increasing temperature, so that U sorption efficiency on biotite increased with increasing temperature. Sorption of uranyl ion and uranyl hydroxy cations on biotite decreased with incresaing temperature.

SEM, TEM, and electron probe studies indicate that the anatase in Georgia kaolins, and probably anatase in general, consists of subspherical particles (TiO2 pellets) 0.05–0.1 µm dia. Some pure anatase aggregates may be pseudomorphic after ilmenite and have a tabular shape, but much of the anatase is formed from Ti that occurs as scattered ions in the octahedral sheets of biotite. When removed from the biotite this material forms TiO2 pellets. These pellets can occur as: single pellets; irregular aggregates; layered aggregates; spherical aggregates; mixed aggregates (with kaolinite); coated aggregates (with kaolinite). Physical energy can be used to break TiO2—kaolinite aggregates, separate single TiO2 pellets from kaolinite plates and remove kaolinite coatings from TiO2 aggregates.

Al and Si are present in all TiO2 aggregates and the Si—Al ratio is lower in the aggregates than in the kaolinite. An amorphous Si—Al compound may be present and act as a cement.

The anatase apparently is formed from Ti that is released from the parent mineral as Ti (OH)4. The Ti (OH)4 precipitates to form an amorphous hydrous oxide gel which dehydrates to form a granular aggregate of small anatase crystals.

The Gourougou volcanic massif (northeastern Morocco) is actively prospected for bentonite deposits. Five bentonites originating from different environments were selected for the present study: hydrothermal alteration of obsidian perlite glass inside the volcanoes themselves (Providencia and Tribia deposits); alteration of pyroclastic flows in a marine shallow water to lagoonal lacustrine environment (Ibourhardayn deposit); ash falls in marine or lacustrine systems (Moulay Rachid and Melg el Ouidan (formerly Camp Berteau) deposits). All of these bentonites were probably formed from volcanic glass originating from a rhyolitic magma at different stages of differentiation as shown by slight variations of REE and incompatible element abundances. The crystal-chemical characteristics of the smectite vary according to alteration conditions: beidellite predominates in hydrothermal systems, whereas montmorillonite predominates in lagoonal and lacustrine environments, and mixed-layer beidellite-montmorillonite in the sea-water-altered pyroclastic flows. All these dioctahedral smectites exhibit a heterogeneous distribution of charge as shown by the presence of partially expandable (1 EG) or non- expandable (0 EG) layers in the K-saturation state. The proportion of the collapsed or partially expandable layers is not related to the average layer charge or to the cation exchange capacity. This militates for an overall heterogeneous charge distribution. Compared to other natural or experimental alteration systems of similar rhyolitic glass, the formation of beidellite or montmorillonite appears to be controlled by the amounts of Mg in the system.

Mineralogical and thermal characteristics of synthetic Al-, Cr-, Mn-, Ni- and Ti-bearing goethites, synthesized via alkaline hydrolysis of metal-ferrihydrite gels, were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. Shifts in unit-cell dimensions were consistent with size of substituent metal ions and confirmed the incorporation of Al3+, Cr3+, Mn3+, Ni2+ and Ti4+ in the goethite structure. A weight loss of 6.2 wt.% for goethite containing 12.2 mol.% Ti, being significantly less than for stoichiometric goethite, is consistent with the replacement of Fe by Ti in the goethite structure coupled with the substitution of O2− ions for OH− (i.e. proton loss). These data provide the first confirmation of the direct replacement of Fe by Ti within goethite. Formation of multiple dehydroxylation endotherms for goethite containing 4.5 mol.% Al, 15.3 mol.% Mn and 12.2 mol.% Ti was not attributed to the decomposition of surface OH groups or related simply to the crystallinity of precursor goethite (‘high-a’ vs. ‘low-a’) as defined by the magnitude of a. Instead, endotherm doublet formation was associated with weight loss due to the dehydroxylation of goethite remaining after initial phase transformation to protohematite and to the evolution of OH− associated with the rapid increase in crystallite size of protohematite directed primarily along the a direction. Development of the first endotherm is due to initial dehydroxylation and transformation to protohematite. With continued heating of well ordered goethite or goethite containing moderate to high levels of substituent cations, domain growth along the a direction is delayed or inhibited to a critical point that provides enough thermal energy to enable goethite transformation to proceed to completion and for proto-hematite domain growth to occur. This results in the formation of a second endotherm. For less well ordered goethite and/or goethite containing only low levels of foreign metal cations, protohematite domain growth is not inhibited and proceeds continuously with heating to give only a single endotherm.

Batch reactor experiments were performed at 150°C, 175°C, and 200°C to determine the effect of high pH NaOH solutions on the mineralogy of the Opalinus shale. In these experiments, the change in solution quench pH at 25°C, solution composition, and mineralogy were monitored as a function of time for up to ≈40 days. Runs were performed in 50 ml titanium hydrothermal reactor vessels. Each reactor was charged with 0.5–5.0 g of the 80–200 mesh size fraction of Opalinus shale, and 25 ml of solution (0.1 and 0.01 M NaOH). The general sequence of reaction products observed under these high pH conditions include first the formation of analcime, followed by vermiculite, and finally Na-rectorite formation.
