We show that the sequence of moments of order less than 1 of averages of i.i.d. positive random variables is log-concave. For moments of order at least 1, we conjecture that the sequence is log-convex and show that this holds eventually for integer moments (after neglecting the first $p^2$ terms of the sequence).

For any prime p, let $y(p)$ denote the smallest integer y such that every reduced residue class (mod p) is represented by the product of some subset of $\{1,\dots ,y\}$ . It is easy to see that $y(p)$ is at least as large as the smallest quadratic nonresidue (mod p); we prove that $y(p) \ll _\varepsilon p^{1/(4 \sqrt e)+\varepsilon }$ , thus strengthening Burgess’ classical result. This result is of intermediate strength between two other results, namely Burthe’s proof that the multiplicative group (mod p) is generated by the integers up to $O_\varepsilon (p^{1/(4 \sqrt e)+\varepsilon })$ , and Munsch and Shparlinski’s result that every reduced residue class (mod p) is represented by the product of some subset of the primes up to $O_\varepsilon (p^{1/(4 \sqrt e)+\varepsilon })$ . Unlike the latter result, our proof is elementary and similar in structure to Burgess’ proof for the least quadratic nonresidue.

We will give a new proof of the existence of hypercylinder expander of the inverse mean curvature flow which is a radially symmetric homothetic soliton of the inverse mean curvature flow in $\mathbb {R}^{n}\times \mathbb {R}$ , $n\ge 2$ , of the form $(r,y(r))$ or $(r(y),y)$ , where $r=|x|$ , $x\in \mathbb {R}^{n}$ , is the radially symmetric coordinate and $y\in \mathbb {R}$ . More precisely, for any $\lambda>\frac {1}{n-1}$ and $\mu>0$ , we will give a new proof of the existence of a unique even solution $r(y)$ of the equation $\frac {r^{\prime \prime }(y)}{1+r^{\prime }(y)^{2}}=\frac {n-1}{r(y)}-\frac {1+r^{\prime }(y)^{2}}{\lambda (r(y)-yr^{\prime }(y))}$ in $\mathbb {R}$ which satisfies $r(0)=\mu $ , $r^{\prime }(0)=0$ and $r(y)>yr^{\prime }(y)>0$ for any $y\in \mathbb {R}$ . We will prove that $\lim _{y\to \infty }r(y)=\infty $ and $a_{1}:=\lim _{y\to \infty }r^{\prime }(y)$ exists with $0\le a_{1}<\infty $ . We will also give a new proof of the existence of a constant $y_{1}>0$ such that $r^{\prime \prime }(y_{1})=0$ , $r^{\prime \prime }(y)>0$ for any $0<y<y_{1}$ , and $r^{\prime \prime }(y)<0$ for any $y>y_{1}$ .

Let A be a semisimple, unital, and complex Banach algebra. It is well known and easy to prove that A is commutative if and only $e^xe^y=e^{x+y}$ for all $x,y\in A$ . Elaborating on the spectral theory of commutativity developed by Aupetit, Zemánek, and Zemánek and Pták, we derive, in this paper, commutativity results via a spectral comparison of $e^xe^y$ and $e^{x+y}$ .

Let $\mathbb {F}_q$ be the finite field of q elements. In this paper, we study the vanishing behavior of multizeta values over $\mathbb {F}_q[t]$ at negative integers. These values are analogs of the classical multizeta values. At negative integers, they are series of products of power sums $S_d(k)$ which are polynomials in t. By studying the t-valuation of $S_d(s)$ for $s < 0$ , we show that multizeta values at negative integers vanish only at trivial zeros. The proof is inspired by the idea of Sheats in the proof of a statement of “greedy element” by Carlitz.

A Grigorchuk–Gupta–Sidki (GGS)-group is a subgroup of the automorphism group of the p-regular rooted tree for an odd prime p, generated by one rooted automorphism and one directed automorphism. Pervova proved that all torsion GGS-groups do not have maximal subgroups of infinite index. Here, we extend the result to nontorsion GGS-groups, which include the weakly regular branch, but not branch, GGS-group.

In response to an open problem raised by S. Rabinowitz, we prove that

We investigate the distribution of the digits of quotients of randomly chosen positive integers taken from the interval $[1,T]$ , improving the previously known error term for the counting function as $T\to +\infty $ . We also resolve some natural variants of the problem concerning points with prime coordinates and points that are visible from the origin.

Let $M(A,n)$ be the Moore space of type $(A,n)$ for an Abelian group A and $n\ge 2$ . We show that the loop space $\Omega (M(A,n))$ is homotopy nilpotent if and only if A is a subgroup of the additive group $\mathbb {Q}$ of the field of rationals. Homotopy nilpotency of loop spaces $\Omega (M(A,1))$ is discussed as well.

In this paper, we give characterizations of the category of finitely generated projective modules having a right rejective chain. By focusing on the characterizations, we give sufficient conditions for right rejective chains to be total right rejective chains. Moreover, we prove that Nakayama algebras with heredity ideals, locally hereditary algebras and algebras of global dimension at most two satisfy the sufficient conditions. As an application, we show that these algebras are right-strongly quasi-hereditary algebras.

Narasihman and Ramanan proved in [Amer. J. Math. 83(1961), 563–572] that an arbitrary connection in a vector bundle over a base space B can be obtained as the pull-back (via a correctly chosen classifying map from B into the appropriate Grassmannian) of the universal connection in the universal bundle over the Grassmannian. The purpose of this paper is to relate geometric properties of the classifying map to geometric properties of the pulled-back connection. More specifically, we describe conditions on the classifying map under which the pulled-back connection: (1) is fat (in the sphere bundle), (2) has a parallel curvature tensor, and (3) induces a connection metric with nonnegative sectional curvature on the vector bundle (or positive sectional curvature on the sphere bundle).

Let G be a finite group and $\psi (G) = \sum _{g \in G} o(g)$ , where $o(g)$ denotes the order of $g \in G$ . There are many results on the influence of this function on the structure of a finite group G.

In this paper, as the main result, we answer a conjecture of Tărnăuceanu. In fact, we prove that if G is a group of order n and $\psi (G)>31\psi (C_n)/77$ , where $C_n$ is the cyclic group of order n, then G is supersolvable. Also, we prove that if G is not a supersolvable group of order n and $\psi (G) = 31\psi (C_n)/77$ , then $G\cong A_4 \times C_m$ , where $(m, 6)=1$ .

Finally, Herzog et al. in (2018, J. Algebra, 511, 215–226) posed the following conjecture: If $H\leq G$ , then $\psi (G) \unicode[stix]{x02A7D} \psi (H) |G:H|^2$ . By an example, we show that this conjecture is not satisfied in general.

The goal of this note is to completely determine the rings for which every nonunit is a product of a nilpotent and an idempotent (in either order).

Bezdek and Kiss showed that existence of origin-symmetric coverings of unit sphere in ${\mathbb {E}}^n$ by at most $2^n$ congruent spherical caps with radius not exceeding $\arccos \sqrt {\frac {n-1}{2n}}$ implies the X-ray conjecture and the illumination conjecture for convex bodies of constant width in ${\mathbb {E}}^n$ , and constructed such coverings for $4\le n\le 6$ . Here, we give such constructions with fewer than $2^n$ caps for $5\le n\le 15$ .

For the illumination number of any convex body of constant width in ${\mathbb {E}}^n$ , Schramm proved an upper estimate with exponential growth of order $(3/2)^{n/2}$ . In particular, that estimate is less than $3\cdot 2^{n-2}$ for $n\ge 16$ , confirming the abovementioned conjectures for the class of convex bodies of constant width. Thus, our result settles the outstanding cases $7\le n\le 15$ .

We also show how to calculate the covering radius of a given discrete point set on the sphere efficiently on a computer.

In 1955, Lehto showed that, for every measurable function $\psi $ on the unit circle $\mathbb T,$ there is a function f holomorphic in the unit disc, having $\psi $ as radial limit a.e. on $\mathbb T.$ We consider an analogous problem for solutions f of homogenous elliptic equations $Pf=0$ and, in particular, for holomorphic functions on Riemann surfaces and harmonic functions on Riemannian manifolds.

We consider Calabi–Yau n-folds X arising from certain hyperplane arrangements. Using Fu–Vial’s theory of distinguished cycles for varieties with motive of abelian type, we show that the subring of the Chow ring of X generated by divisors, Chern classes and intersections of subvarieties of positive codimension injects into cohomology. We also prove Voisin’s conjecture for X, and Voevodsky’s smash-nilpotence conjecture for odd-dimensional X.

This note characterizes, in terms of interpolating Blaschke products, the symbols of Hankel operators essentially commuting with all quasicontinuous Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space of the unit circle. It also shows that such symbols do not contain the complex conjugate of any nonconstant singular inner function.

Let G be a group, and let g be a nontrivial element in G. If some nonempty finite product of conjugates of g equals the identity, then g is called a generalized torsion element. We say that a knot K has generalized torsion if $G(K) = \pi _1(S^3 - K)$ admits such an element. For a $(2, 2q+1)$ -torus knot K, we demonstrate that there are infinitely many unknots $c_n$ in $S^3$ such that p-twisting K about $c_n$ yields a twist family $\{ K_{q, n, p}\}_{p \in \mathbb {Z}}$ in which $K_{q, n, p}$ is a hyperbolic knot with generalized torsion whenever $|p|> 3$ . This gives a new infinite class of hyperbolic knots having generalized torsion. In particular, each class contains knots with arbitrarily high genus. We also show that some twisted torus knots, including the $(-2, 3, 7)$ -pretzel knot, have generalized torsion. Because generalized torsion is an obstruction for having bi-order, these knots have non-bi-orderable knot groups.

For a nondecreasing function $K: [0, \infty)\rightarrow [0, \infty)$ and $0<s<\infty $ , we introduce a Morrey type space of functions analytic in the unit disk $\mathbb {D}$ , denoted by $\mathcal {D}^s_K$ . Some characterizations of $\mathcal {D}^s_K$ are obtained in terms of K-Carleson measures. A relationship between two spaces $\mathcal {D}^{s_1}_K$ and $\mathcal {D}^{s_2}_K$ is given by fractional order derivatives. As an extension of some known results, for a positive Borel measure $\mu $ on $\mathbb {D}$ , we find sufficient or necessary condition for the embedding map $I: \mathcal {D}^{s}_{K}\mapsto \mathcal {T}^s_{K}(\mu)$ to be bounded.

A $k_{\omega }$ -space X is a Hausdorff quotient of a locally compact, $\sigma $ -compact Hausdorff space. A theorem of Morita’s describes the structure of X when the quotient map is closed, but in 2010 a question of Arkhangel’skii’s highlighted the lack of a corresponding theorem for nonclosed quotient maps (even from subsets of $\mathbb {R}^n$ ). Arkhangel’skii’s specific question had in fact been answered by Siwiec in 1976, but a general structure theorem for $k_{\omega }$ -spaces is still lacking. We introduce pure quotient maps, extend Morita’s theorem to these, and use Fell’s topology to show that every quotient map can be “purified” (and thus every $k_{\omega }$ -space is the image of a pure quotient map). This clarifies the structure of arbitrary $k_{\omega }$ -spaces and gives a fuller answer to Arkhangel’skii’s question.
