Motivated by a well-known conjecture of Andrews and Curtis, we consider the question as to how in a given n-generator group G, a given set of n “annihilators” of G, that is, with normal closure all of G, can be transformed by standard moves into a generating n-tuple. The recalcitrance of G is defined to be the least number of elementary standard moves (”elementary M-transformations”) by means of which every annihilating n-tuple of G can be transformed into a generating n-tuple. We show that in the classes of finite and soluble groups, having zero recalcitrance is equivalent to nilpotence, and that a large class of 2-generator soluble groups has recalcitrance at most 3. Some examples and remarks are included.

We express the number of points on the Dwork hypersurface $X_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}^{d}:x_{1}^{d}+x_{2}^{d}+\cdots +x_{d}^{d}=d\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}x_{1}x_{2}\cdots x_{d}$ over a finite field of order $q\not \equiv 1\,(\text{mod}\,d)$ in terms of McCarthy’s $p$-adic hypergeometric function for any odd prime $d$.

Motivated by a question related to the construction of the Baum-Connes analytical assembly map for locally compact groups, we refine a criterion of Godement for amenability: for a unimodular group G, our criterion says that G is amenable if and only if every compactly supported, positive-definite function has non-negative integral over G.

We obtain new inequalities relating the inradius of a planar convex set with interior containing no point of the integral lattice, with the area, perimeter and diameter of the set. By considering a special sublattice of the integral lattice, we also obtain an inequality concerning the inradius and area of a planar convex set with interior containing exactly one point of the integral lattice.

Using a method due to Rieger [‘Remark on a paper of Stux concerning squarefree numbers in non-linear sequences’, Pacific J. Math.78(1) (1978), 241–242], we prove that the Piatetski-Shapiro sequence defined by $\{\lfloor n^c \rfloor : n\in \mathbb {N}\}$ contains infinitely many consecutive square-free integers whenever $1<c<3/2$ .

We introduce a notion of modulated topological vector spaces, that generalises, among others, Banach and modular function spaces. As applications, we prove some results which extend Kirk’s and Browder’s fixed point theorems. The theory of modulated topological vector spaces provides a very minimalist framework, where powerful fixed point theorems are valid under a bare minimum of assumptions.

Let $p$ be an odd prime number and $E$ an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$ with good reduction at every prime of $F$ above $p$. We compute the Euler characteristics of the signed Selmer groups of $E$ over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extension. The novelty of our result is that we allow the elliptic curve to have mixed reduction types for primes above $p$ and mixed signs in the definition of the signed Selmer groups.

In this paper, we show that the ratio of preinvex functions is invex. Hence, we give a positive answer to the open question which was proposed in a paper of Yang, Yang and Teo in (2003).

Let G be a Hausdorff locally compact abelian group. The author has shown (Bull. Austral. Math. Soc. 10 (1974), 59–66) that, given ε > 0 and a certain base {Vi}i∈I of symmetric open neighbourhoods of zero, the algebra L1(G) admits a bounded positive approximate unit {ki}i∈I such that for every p–th integrable function f on G,

where ω(p; f; Vi) denotes the mean modulus of continuity with exponent p of f. The purpose of this paper is to obtain {ki}i∈I (as above) with a simple dependence of supp on {ki}i∈I on Vi; this is achieved for finite products and homomorphic images of groups for which such a simple dependence is known. The results obtained are used to give a simplified proof of the classical Jackson's Theorem for the circle group, and an analogue of this theorem for the a-adic solenoid.

The purpose of this paper is to give some necessary and sufficient conditions for p-nilpotent groups. We extend some results, including the well-known theorems of Burnside and Frobenius as well as some very recent theorems. We also apply our results to determine the structure of some finite groups in terms of formation theory.
