An elementary proof is given for the Lp conjecture, p > 2, which states that for a locally compact group G, Lp (G) (p > 2) is closed under convolution if and only if G is compact.

A necessary and sufficient condition for a continuous function $g$ to be almost periodic on time scales is the existence of an almost periodic function $f$ on $\mathbb{R}$ such that $f$ is an extension of $g$. Our aim is to study this question for pseudo almost periodic functions. We prove the necessity of the condition for pseudo almost periodic functions. An example is given to show that the sufficiency of the condition does not hold for pseudo almost periodic functions. Nevertheless, the sufficiency is valid for uniformly continuous pseudo almost periodic functions. As applications, we give some results on the connection between the pseudo almost periodic (or almost periodic) solutions of dynamic equations on time scales and of the corresponding differential equations.

We calculate the Zulli's matrix of a periodic knot and give some necessary conditions for the Jones polynomial of a periodic knot, which are slightly different from Yokota's result.

In this paper we investigate principal prime ideals in commutative rings. Among other things we characterize the principal prime ideals that are both minimal and maximal and characterize the maximal ideals of a polynomial ring that are principal. Our main result is that if (p) is a principal prime ideal of an atomic ring R, then ht(p)≤1.

Nielsen transformations determine the automorphisms of a free group of rank n, and also of a free abelian group of rank n, and furthermore the generating n-tuples of such groups form a single Nielsen equivalence class. For an arbitrary rank n group, the generating n-tuples may fall into several Nielsen classes. Diaconis and Graham [‘The graph of generating sets of an abelian group’, Colloq. Math.80 (1999), 31–38] determined the Nielsen classes for finite abelian groups. We extend their result to the case of infinite abelian groups.

A simple group G cannot contain a central involution t with CG(t) = 〈t〉 × M, where M is isomorphic to a simple Mathieu group.

Let {En} be the Euler numbers. We give a general congruence modulo 2(m+2)n for E2mk+b, where k,m,n are positive integers and b∈{0,2,4,…}.

We show that if G is a group and G has a graph-product decomposition with finitely generated abelian vertex groups, then G has two canonical decompositions as a graph product of groups: a unique decomposition in which each vertex group is a directly indecomposable cyclic group, and a unique decomposition in which each vertex group is a finitely generated abelian group and the graph satisfies the T0 property. Our results build on results by Droms, Laurence and Radcliffe.

A modified version of the smooth variational principle of Borwein and Preiss is proved. By its help it is shown that in a Banach space with uniformly Gâteaux differentiable norm every continuous function, which is directionally differentiable on a dense Gδ subset of the space, is Gâteaux differentiable on a dense Gδ subset of the space.

For a finite group G, we denote by μ(G) the minimum degree of a faithful permutation representation of G. We prove that if G is a finite p-group with an abelian maximal subgroup, then μ(G/G′)≤μ(G).

We prove a weak form of the mean ergodic theorem for actions of amenable locally compact quantum groups in the von Neumann algebra setting.

We prove the global logarithmic stability of the Cauchy problem for $H^{2}$-solutions of an anisotropic elliptic equation in a Lipschitz domain. The result is based on existing techniques used to establish stability estimates for the Cauchy problem combined with related tools used to study an inverse medium problem.

In this paper we consider the Wośko problem of evaluating, in an infinite-dimensional Banach space X, the infimum of all k ≤ 1 for which there exists a k-ball contractive retraction of the unit ball onto its boundary. We prove that in some classical Banach spaces the best possible value 1 is attained. Moreover we give estimates of the lower H-measure of noncompactness of the retractions we construct.

We derive an explicit piecewise-polynomial closed form for the probability density function of the distance travelled by a uniform random walk in an odd-dimensional space.

We investigate several quantitative properties of entire and meromorphic solutions to some differential-difference equations and generalised delay differential-difference equations. Our results are sharp in a certain sense as illustrated by several examples.

This paper investigates the nonstandard theory of filters on a non-empty meet-semi-lattice of sets and applies this theory to the general study of topological extensions Y for a space X. In particular, we apply this theory to Baire and quasi-H-closed extensions as well as Wallman type compactifications. Whereas these extensions have previously teen obtained and studied as types of ultrafilter extensions, we study them as subsets of an enlargement of X. Since X ⊂ Y ⊂ ◯ and the elements of X and Y - X are of the same set-theoretic type, these extensions appear more natural from the nonstandard viewpoint.

We make some comments on the existence, uniqueness and integrability of the scalar derivatives and approximate scalar derivatives of vector-valued functions. We are particularly interested in the connection between scalar differentiation and the weak Radon–Nikodým property.

For a semigroup S of transformations of an infinite set X let Gs be the group of all the permutations of X that preserve S under conjugation. Fix a permutation group H on X and a transformation f of X, and let 〈f: H〉 = 〈{hfh−1: h ∈ H}〉 be the H-closure of f. We find necessary and sufficient conditions on a one-to-one transformation f and a normal subgroup H of the symmetric group on X to satisfy G〈f:H〉 = H. We also show that if S is a semigroup of one-to-one transformations of X and GS contains the alternating group on X then Aut(S) = Inn(S) ≅ GS.
